On this Microsoft webpage -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239937/kb/239937

It tells me about the availability of "Microsoft Windows 98 Customer
Service Pack". I am assuming that this is a big all-in-one update to
Windows 98, which is what I am after.

In the above-mentioned article, it says -

Windows 98 Customer Service Pack is available for download from the
Windows Update Web site:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

The problem I am having at the moment is that if I go to the above
webpage (using my XP-based PC), I get automatically redirected to -

http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

This appears to be the new Microsoft update service. In the FAQ
section on this webpage, it says that the "Supported versions and
languages" are 2003, XP and 2000 -- no mention of 98.

My question is -- is it possible to download an "all-in-one" (or maybe
just a couple of large bundled updates for instance) Windows 98SE
update pack, using an XP-based PC connected to the internet?

Thanks a lot, best regards, Robert.

I've not seen any 'big package' of 98 updates from MS, BUT if you go to
this web site you'll find LOTS of helpful stuff

Do you have second edition now? It sounds like you have the
retroactively named first edition.

MS never said one could download from their site for free an update
from FE to SE -- there was a an update cd that they sold. I think
they called it an update instead -- but I don't know that you can't
get there some other way. I never knew if there were an essential
difference between the two, or if one could just improve parts. And
it depends why you need the update.

MS had a deal a year or so ago (two years?) that you could sign up for to
have the CD containing all pertinent service updates sent to you. I did,
they did. I don't know if the first site you mentioned has the same thing
or not but perhaps you could try it with a friend's computer that is running
Win98.

You have two major, relatively easy possibilities.

1. First go get IE6SP1 and install it. http://tinyurl.com/6zjbm Then use
Windows Updates to update your machine online.

2. Use a collection provided by someone else to update the system offline. I
offer such a set of CDs that will update Win98, Win98SE and ME more or less
fully. I ask $3 to cover costs. Email me at updates_at_grystmill.com

Thanks!!! I've invested so much time and effort in to attempting to
build from scratch not one but two new '98 boxes, so those CDs will be
incredibly useful, and save me so much extra unnecessary effort - I
really want to do as much offline updating as I possibly can.

Someone here just used that AutoPatcher, and didn't have very good results.
I recommend against. Strongly so. Got stuff in there that I certainly
wouldn't install on any 9x machine. And once you install it, there's no
going back except to flatten and reinstall.

I respect Mr. Terhune's knowledge and willingness to contribute
his worthy, effective assistance here and I'm not normally one to
disagree with him (and I won't do so here, per se), but I will admit
to having used the subject Auto-Patcher and can vouch for what
I feel to be a quite valuable and convenient utility. I had and have
no problems with it whatsoever. I also wanted to mention that it
does allow for multiple options such that only those updates and
installs the user desires can be selected.

Then can you please explain to DL Sayremn how to undo whatever caused his
TCPMID.dll problem. It has all the earmarks of an "unofficial" Update, since
that DLL is mentioned ONLY in context with Win2K/XP/Vista, and never was
intended to be any part of a 9x system. Is there a forum we can send people
to who have problems with Auto-Patcher? Plus, someone else claimed it is
fully uninstallable, whereas I know that the majority of official patches
for Win9x don't come with an uninstall option. I haven't read the most
recent code, but what I did read didn't suggest that the Updates and
HotFixes had been rewritten to allow uninstalling. Can Auto-Patcher
uninstall the Shutdown Supplement, for instance?

Anyway, it boils down to I don't trust the "unofficial" patching involved.
It includes a lot of HotFixes and Microsoft's own opinion of HotFixes is
that they should generally only be applied to machines that need the fix,
and aren't guaranteed not to cause problems in a majority of machines.

Don't trust any of it. That simple. Yes, you suggest an ability to tweak
(somewhat) the settings in so far as what gets installed, etc., but now
we're in the land of the expert, not the casual user, and the casual,
limited-knowledge user is my "client" in these discussions. If you can
answer Mr. Sayremn's problem, or point him to an Auto-Patcher forum where
they can handle it, My opinion might improve slightly. And I will test it
this week and see for myself if I can't find at least some of the answers to
my own questions.

I THINK what is being referred {autopatcher} to is on the MSFN forum, also
where to direct them IF this is what is being referred to.

My limited experience is that, on the whole, using the Microsoft website is
very much influenced by the PC you are using - i. e. it interrogates the PC
in some way, and gives you the downloads it thinks are appropriate to that
machine. There used to be a few parts of the website where you could
download "for use later" - I think some might have let you fetch the
98-specific parts, others made you fetch all the parts, but at least you
could choose which when you actually came to use them (part of the IE update
used to be like that) - but I haven't checked recently.

Of course, it isn't just Microsoft; several websites do this sort of
interrogation. Netscape used to by default, though - though it took some
finding - you could get the older or OS-specific versions (and the full
install, not just an "installer" which is really mainly a
download-manager-and-installer-starter, which Microsoft are _very_ fond of),
but I'm not sure now Netscape is at end of life. Some websites do let you
just get what you want, and there are other, third-party, sites that
actually keep older versions of lots of things (http://www.oldversion.com/
is a good one), though these sites often have to close or at least purge
what they offer because of (sometimes legitimate of course) pressure from
the originators. But I'm getting a bit off-topic from the original
OS-specific question now.

The following link is the forum for AutoPatcher for Win98SE which
follows the progress of the software since its creation in August
2006.
http://www.msfn.org/board/Auto-Patcher-For-Windows-98se-English-t80800.html.

The following link is to the website of the creator of AutoPatcher for
Win98SE.
http://soporific.dsleague.com/main/?page_id=7

As I wrote (before the removal of my contribution from this subject),
I am a non-techie, no nothing about the 98SE update regime, kept 98SE
up to date until July/06, because I still want to use it. I gave an
emphatic "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK" warning to anyone wanting to try
AutoPatcher, backup your "C" drive with Norton Ghost or alternative. I
then "TOOK THE PLUNGE", installing the complete earlier Oct/07 version
of AutoPatcher, then installing the "Essential Components" section of
the most recent version of AutoPatcher (which updates to February/08).
My "non-techie" opinion is that my computer, my Win98SE OS has never
run better. That's all I know, maybe I just got lucky.

I am also using the highly controversial Revolution Pack 7.11 (which
comes as a manual install in the AutoPatcher package) which transforms
the legacy appearance of 98SE into either XP or Vista. I am currently
running a contemporary, quite exciting Vista theme, wallpaper, icons
etc. The installation of RP7.11 carries a "USE WITH EXTREME CAUTION",
MIGHT HAVE TO RE-INSTALL 98SE" warning, can really screw up your
machine. Perhaps I just got lucky again but it works great for me, the
look of Vista + the complete update of 98SE, this naive non-techie
feels like he is enjoying computing again in an exciting new way. JUST
MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN!!

Lying brown-noser of the worst kind.

That last sentence is pure BS, the same BS you dish up month after month,
year after year. True in the individual words, but only in the most
contrived sense of those words, with your artful little habit of leaving out
important details and context.

You're a lawyer, right?
