    - Starting your PC without the front panel power button I'd like to know how to start up my PC without the front panel power button assembly because my PC won't start or fire up. Nothing happens when I hit the power button. The power supply works, so I figure it might be the power button assembly that's the problem.     - I bet you can't fix my DVD drive problem I recently got a DVD/CD drive that worked perfectly fine... for a while. I used it for some time and then one night we rented a movie (Finding Neverland) and watched it on our TV's DVD player. After watching it my sister came home and wanted to see it so my mom stuck it in again, but this time it didn't work. The player said that there was not even a DVD in the player. I decided then to take the DVD and let her see it on my computer (trying to be nice) and when I stuck the DVD in my drive, it too said no disk was in it. From that night on both the player and my drive didn't work. I could and can play CD's in it just fine, but no DVD works. The strangest and most anoying part of it all is that the other day the TV's DVD player just started working again out of the blue.     - Starting up your PC I'm having problems starting up my PC at all. I think a wire is loose on the power button assembly. The power supply works, because I tried on another PC and it booted up. Isn't there a way to start your PC by touching 2 points on the motherboard? I took a PC class a while back and my teacher often started his PC by touching 2 points on his motherboard with a screwdriver? If there is a way to do that please tell me.     - Dual Boot worry Hello,,, I am pasting a post here that I made in xp general..... (I have never cross posted in my life, and dont wish to start now, so will copy/paste as the problem I have relates to both win98 and xp.) "I have developed a problem with my dual boot system. I have win98 and xp,, win98 being on the c: drive, and xp on the d drive. I switched to xp today after a reboot, all seemed okay as it went through the normal motions, then it produced a screen as if xp had been installed for the first time;; then just ceased up. I havent used xp a great deal, and it doesnt have access to the internet. When I open win' explorer, (via booting back to win98) it shows my D: drive with all of the things that are loaded into xp, including all new folders and stuff that I created last time I was there. (oh, xp was loaded on using fat32, and has been that way for over a year without a problem.) So, one of my main concerns right now is the fact that xp is the boot manager for the dual-boot, and I sure as heck dont want to lose the ability to boot into win98. I have heard that there is a repair tool on my xp disc, and was wondering whether I should try to use that? I also dont have my product key anymore. I downloaded 'magicjellybean' product key finder, and saved it to a file in win98, then from there created a folder on xp (d: drive) and copied it into there,, but realised that I was still in a 98 environment and hence couldnt fire it up to find xp's product number..... still, I dont even know if I need that at this stage because I have the original disc anyway. Can anyone advise on what I should do, or better still, what any of you here would do in the same situation? Basically, I havent really tried anything yet, thought I would come here first. Have run all the obvious antivirus and malaware programs, comes up clean for win98. Thank you for input.     - Missing prgs- files -updates Pentium 3. win98se. Prgs, data files, Win 98 & 98se updates, just dissappeared from my hard drive. Ran scandisk, all ok, no bad sectors, nothing.     - Folder double-click or Open doesn't do anything Some of the folders have this odd behavior while others are working normally. If I attempt to open (right click/Open) or double click, nothing happens. However, if I right click/explore, it operates normally and the explore window opens displaying the contents.     - WAV files needed I'm looking for a complete set of the system sound files that came with Windows 98 (startup, shutdown, etc.) I know this a tall order, but would anyone mind emailing these WAV files to me? It's easy enough to do. The files can be found in the control panel >sounds. Just copy and paste them to a new folder, then zip....and send! If I can return the favor, let me know.     - Did I have a virus? Windows 98SE PC was working fine. I had been downloading some files, e.g. RealPlayer. No apparent problems. Powered down. Later on, started it up again. There was some kind of error message at the DOS level where it said Abort, Retry, Fail. I said Abort. Then: Invalid System Disk etc etc. Drive C buggered. However, I booted up to DOS from a floppy and most (95%) of the folders and files on C appeared intact. But here's the important thing, certain key parts of the OS were gone! The VMM32 folder in Windows\System no longer existed, neither IOSUBSYS. Also, no MSDOS.SYS in drive C. But I had a very recent TrueImage image, so I just restored it. Since then I have been running virus checkers like there's no tomorrow on both PCs, but all come up clean. What could totally trash those folders, yet leave most of the hard drive files intact?     - formatting hard drive I formatted my slave hard drive and did a quick format (erase), instead of a complete format. I wanted to put another operating system on the hard drive and now I'm having problems loading it up. It says: Invalid system disk, replace the disk and press any key. I tried to get into BIOS but this message comes up. When I put Windows ME OS disk into it then it says: Boot from CD-ROM or boot from hard drive. When I chose CD-ROM and ran the operating system it got to the point where it says something to this nature: make sure to remove any floppy diskette and press any key to restart your computer. That's as far as I get. Maybe I should've done a complete format? Does a quick format leave the operating system on the disk? I want to erase the whole disk and have it completely clean.     - Ping: thanatoid <portions snipped for brevity> I had run on too long and my message had appeared, then dropped off the server. Since it was over 12k... I thought maybe there was a 10 k limit. I broke it down into parts...but only the second portion posted... so I had to re-post the first part second. Of course...the original post which had dropped off the server came back. Then happened one more time...so I started a new thread to observe the behavior of my news server I like to do nice things for people, BION, but generally speaking I am totally useless. It's a long sad story. I /can/ fix a lamp :-) I assure you that if you can fix a lamp... you can fix a computer. Though I go way back and took my first course in FORTRAN IV at Milwaukee School of Engineering back in 1968. I was *shocked* that punch cards were being used. I still used them in the late 70's when I worked (summer job, I never went ANYWHERE) in the registrar's office of my college. The closest we got to computers at the time, until 1980 IIRC, was an IBM Selectric with a tiny memory for mass "customized" mailings etc.. That was pretty damn snazzy I thought! But you still had to type in every address manually! Though I prefer my old manual typewriter I have at least one Selectric up in my attic. I also have one of IBM's original electric typewriters. The museum in my city has one on display. My favorite thing is the dial where you can set the keyboard pressure for the number of carbon copies you are making. The dial goes up to 10 ! If I set the dial to "ten copies" but just put a single sheet of paper in the machine...if you hit the "0" it will punch a hole in the paper!!!! It seemed absurd! Eleven years later when I went back to school to get additional education for my job, I was mortified that we were still using punch cards! It seemed insane. After constructing a 68000 based machine for one of my advanced courses...in May 1982 or so...I eventually grew to HATE computers so much that I swore I would never touch one again. Was it such an awful experience? I don't know if there are any folks who hang out here who are my age or older...but I can assure you that it you had to write programs, then submit them on punch cards... it was a good reason to hate computers. If you made as much as one typo even the omission of a non-ambiguous parenthese... the program would be "spit out" and you'd not only have to wait in line to get at a punch card machine, you'd need to wait in line to re-submit you program...then wait for others to submit...as they were run in batches. I am not kidding you...it took an entire week to get one program up and running. Today, you could do that work in a few minutes if you are smart...but even a programming dummy like I am could still get something running within a few hours. Yes. I hated computers !!!! <snip> Wow. I was pretty clueless at the time and my college was an art school... The closest I got to a computer was a basic video editying system and a video synthesizer - but that was analog to begin with, and really not much of a computer. I remember watching short analog computer graphics films (conisdered valuable works of art) which the Whitney brothers (and others) made at /great/ pains and then seeing almost EXACTLY the same things in screen savers... Great that you went to an art school. Though I do mostly photography now...I've done quite a bit of art in the past. The GF is a full time artist and is the executive director of the gallery she runs within the auspices of the NPO where I do my volunteer work. Even the Kadaitcha man..who is the biggest insulter on all of Usenet is a rank amateur with his insults <G> The highlight of my poetic career was in 1995... when I was invited to the Peace Museum in Chicago to read two of my poems at the commemoration of the ending of WW-II with the bombing of Nagasaki. The poem was deeply inspired by stories my father told me...as he was among the first US troops to go into the city after the bombing. Wow. That must have been quite an experience for him. I am haunted by the stories to this day. My father was such an excellent story teller that I feel like I have walked the streets of Nagasaki and have personally seen the destruction. He brought home a jack knife he found on the streets and I often thought about the person who owned it. I later realized that the person who owned the knife had been instantly vaporized...and the knife was all that was left. One day my father discarded all his WW-II mementos... stating : "Bad memories." But I have the entire jack knife memorized and still see the broken blade, reground...and the cork screw used to open bottles of Saki. I feel that I am forever linked to the departed soul. Anyway...Colleen was the one who got me interested in computers when she gave me her old Packard Bell back in 1999. I was with her when she bought it new in 1995 for $1600. I thought she was nuts! The price was , if anything on the low side... even for the time...I doubt it was top of the line. It only had an 850 meg drive and 8 megs of RAM In 1995 better machines were available. Though Packard Bell was often maligned... I am partial to them even to this day. I had completely upgraded that machine as far as it could go... and only retired it a few years ago. I restored it back to how it was originally, and put it back into the original cardboard carton That does sound a little expensive, even for those days. I guesss it must have been that top-of-the line brand name!!! Since the machine was a freebie...I took it home and figured..might as well see what all this computer stuff is about. Then I go hooked. When she owned the machine I would never go near it, and if she ever wanted to show me something... I literally ran out of the room screaming. I would have liked to see that /laughs/. I *really* was afraid of it! <snipo> It's horrible how these things have invisible yet SO powerful tentacles, huh? Yep! <snap> I had never even /heard/ of Linux then. The day MAY be approaching though... I started out with Red Hat 5.2 Sheesh, I did not even know what a partition was when I started... from the time I got the CD...until the time I actually had Linux installed and configured...was six months. The X-server...which runs the GUI had to be manually configured. It was a lot of work! Today, with Linux...you just boot off the cd and away you go... many distros are even easier to install than Windows. <more trimming> I will NEVER get that far. My father used to write computer programs for the huge boxes at universities they used in the 60's and 70's (does the word mainframe apply to those?) to do his psychological statistics calculations, but the closest I ever came to programming was making an IBM PC (the one with 2 5¼ flopppies) draw a circle on the screen. It /was/ very satisfying. Yep back in those days...they would have been main frames all right. At the original company I worked for, our programmer was a guy who had started out back in 1952. They transferred data (on punch cards) between cities, using a pickup truck! Every time I repair a machine...I look at it as a new opportunity to learn something. To me, it's a cheap education...way better than any college course I had ever taken. I went to school for more years than I'd care to admit...but learned much more on my own. Same here. <snp> You are much more inquisitive than I am... I tend to get really nervous and sweaty when things get really hairy and prefer to just start clean. And I have never "worked" with computers - except when I did DTP and general office boy crap at my last job, I /somehow/ quickly turned into the person who had to show everyone how to use their computers. Yet I remained the lowest paid person in the company. Even then I never built one, I was just fairly good at software - I actually READ entire manuals just on principle! The only actual "fixing" experience I've had is with my 3 machines (the 3rd is an HP Vectra 486/66 which I can't even remember last firing up - but it is built like a tank!) and a few friends' machines - but that just leads to very unpleasant "misunderstandings". I have sworn to myself to NEVER help any friend again. If you work on old junk,there is nothing to get nervous about... but if it's for a friend...that's a whole different story. I have one friend who is a professional photographer and I build and maintain all his machines. His work is so amazing that he keeps me on a retainer. Though I deeply respect the guy, I have to treat him like a kid when it comes to telling him to *always* back up the data. One afternoon, he lost a 200 gig HD (This was back when a 200 gig drive was the largest one could get.) It was not detected in the bios... so he brought the entire machine over to my shop. He was worried sick. The drive contained thousands of images. Though they were all scanned from 35mm film and he had the film stored properly...He had about a years worth of Photoshop work on that drive... cleaning up the images etc...and only a partial backup. I sent the guy home and tried everything I could possible think of...and still, though the drive would spin up... it was not detected in the bios, no matter what I did and I tried it in other machines. By two in the morning...I went over the electronics with a bright light and magnifying lens...and *thought* I found the problem. One of those tiny surface mount capacitors had a seemingly bad solder joint...and one end seemed to have bee lifted slightly. I grabbed the smallest soldering iron I had... but the tip look enormous. I was fatigued...so in a flash of good judgment ( something I rarely have) I decided NOT to work on it that night...but instead tried to go to sleep. But had horrible nightmares and woke up every hour in a cold sweat. The next day I got the drive up and running. then tackled a second drive that *merely* had a read/write error... and the data recovery for that drive only took me about two more days of continuous work <G> !!! Sheesh, did my friend ever get a nice lecture...and today I think he owns more HD's than Maxtor! <more snip> I simply load a light Linux distro onto those. Generally, Damn Small Linux (heck I can put that on a 100 meg drive and have plenty of room to spare)... then offer the machines on Craig's list. I never heard of that distro. Perhaps it is not as beginning- user friendly as it is small? Damn Small Linux is great. It's just a 50 meg download so even folks with a dial up connection can get it, no hassle. You just boot from the cd and it's a live distribution. You can run it right from the CD..and the machine does not even need a HD. There is a hard drive install option and it's quite quick and easy to to. For older machines that can't boot from a cd they also have a floppy available...which will access the cd and start the installation. <snip> Good for you. I am guessing me you are a conscientious and hard worker, but that a lot of your time is spent in just sitting and watching things and making sure nothing screws up - /then/ you spring into action like WonderWoman! (I hope you don't mind the comparison.) So you spend a fair amt. of time on the Usenet so you won't go crazy from boredom. Or am I totally off? When my mind is set to it...I am the hardest worker on the planet. (or so it seems) Once I start a job, even if it takes all day... i just go, go , go. Don't talk or eat until it's done. The biggest job I was on was in a nuclear power plant. I did need to take a few breaks there. Not only did we have all the engineers and technicians from my office in there...we had to hired a bunch of temps too. We worked 16 or 17 hours a day, six days a week for six weeks continuously! That was one hell of a big job. The project was way behind schedule...but the fault was not on our end... We were paid a premium I assure you...but If I had to do it all over again...they could keep the money. The best part of the entire job was the fact that I had a higher security clearance than the owner of the company I worked for. (I was cleared to work unsupervised...as I was in fact one of the supervisors. )When the owner of my company came in to see the job progress, I was required to keep him in my sight at ALL times... even when he had to go to the bathroom! That was quite humiliating for him I assure you!!! However. In addition the being such a hard worker... I am also the laziest bum on the planet... I went for something like 15 years on my job working 20 to 30 hour weeks...until one day...someone mentioned to me kindly: aaah, we do pay you you for 40 hours you know. Of course, how could I tell them that I do about two hours worth of work for every hour I am on the job?     - Re-Install Win98SE ? I was given a Yr 2000 HP desktop PIII 866 w/ 384 Mb ram, running Win98SE. It has more capability than my older 1998 HP. I'm having two problems which I can't resolve. I'm connected to the Internet via ethernet cable> DLink SuperG router>cable modem. The older machine (Celeron500 256Mb) was connected to the net via a USB connection as the installer couldnt get (he tried) a 10/100 hard card to function (Port conflicts he said). Given that, the connection was reasonably fast but the machine did have 'falling offline" problems, especially if left alone/inactive for a while. During D/L though (say 25 parts x 309 Mb .WMV files) it was fast and smooth..1 0f 25, 2 of 25, 3 of 25 etc right up to 25, On the PIII, I installed a new (er) PCI 10/100 card [pitched the original ISA one]and got it running pretty well but it does "hang" from time to time during downloads. Where this is most evident is trying to Update my NEWSGROUP list of some 60,000 groups..it will usually hang at 140 groups..if I keep hitting reset, on occasion it will grab up to 6500 groups but then hangs again. Trying to D/L the same 25 part (309Mb X 25 .WMV files) may get one or two parts then it just hangs..I have to hit STOP and start again. It is nearly impossible to D/L even one part intact w/o it hanging. It also shows up when my AVG is updating..it hangs for probably 25 seconds or more during the D/L, then finishes uinlike my other P4Laptop D/L of larger files such as JPGs stalls & stutters as well...about 1/10th the D/L spd of my P4 laptop on the same network So, what I'm wondering is, can I reinstall Win98SE off the disk I have without LOSING the drivers etc for other hardware (such as the PCI 10/100card- I left the disks for that in Az and I'm 1600 miles away now) and other software/drivers 'onboard' which I can't replace ? Are there "sections" of the Win98 I should leave alone and others I should replace ? The other problem, I ve posted here [DKabppls.exe] deals with FREEZING on shutdown and 2 UNTITLED windows appearing "..stopped responding" WAIT/END TASK ? both resulting on an extended freeze and finally a POWER DOWN shut down.     - DKabppls.exe This file in Windows/system (312KB) opens on startup (Win98 6.0). Strangely, I can't find any mention of it on GOOGLE or Microsoft Help. Is it a 'legit' program ? Do I need it ? Do I need it to run on startup ? The reason I'm asking is there are 2 'windows' that hang up this computer on shutdown and I get the warning window: "..stopped responding...WAIT ? END TASK?" but both have NO NAME at the top so I don't know what they are, where, or why they're running and often WAIT or END TASK won't get it done. Neither will CTL ALT DEL X2.. Then I have to power down to shut down which is not a good thing.. I ve pulled the list of Running Programs from CTL/ALT/DEL and this one is the 'most suspect" ? Any ideas ? Aside from churning out new OS revisions, some profit might be had from looking at current examples of old systems that, in spite of the status quo, have somehow managed to survive, in daily practical use, and without the benefits of a re-install. After all, with penicillin growing on stale bread, who knows what accidental benefits can be created by continually recovering from random errors over a length of time.......... This was always an informative aspect of hardware product development - getting some ancient and field returns that had been ridden hard and put away wet, to pore over (usually in your spare time, though, I'll admit).     - Upgrading a Slow CPU to a Faster CPU Hi, I bought an old Packard Bell "Multimedia C115" desktop computer from a friend of mine for $20.00. While he had it, he did a some upgrades (128M ram, USB ports, etc.). It has Windows 98SE. The Pentium processor speed is a 120Mhz. I would like to upgrade that to at least 200Mhz. Besides changing the CPU, what other changes would I have to make?     - Help Re-Activating Windows XP Media Center I recently had my HP computer restored and my hard-drive replaced. Some software was just added to the PC and now I get a pop up message that I need to activate Windows to log into my pc. There is no way around this so I am unable to use it. When I try to input the activation numbers and hit ok, it will not accept it and says i have entered an incorrect activation number. Can someone assist me here or explain what happened to cause this? When I run ICW I get the following error message. "Internet connection wizard is unable to continue because password caching has been disabled. Contact your system administrator to have this setting enabled, then restart Internet connection wizard." How the heck do I enable this password caching? I don t recall ever disabling it in the first place, but I suppose this is something my ISP had me do, one of the last times they screwed up my settings. Please advise me how to change this setting.     - I can not get my modem to connect I'm on a dialup connection. I have a USR external 56K modem. I am running Win98se. Last week I connected to the internet with no problems. I was gone for the weekend. When I got back yesterday, I could only connect at 24K. Normally I always connect at 44K and occasionally a little faster. I called my ISP and as usual they told me there is something wrong with my computer. (which I thought was bullshit since it worked fine before the weekend). I should have known better than to listen to the idiot who began by saying he was not too familiar with win98, He had me go to CONTROL PANEL / MODEMS. There were 4 entries for the same modem listed and he had me remove all but one of them. Then he had me run the ADD/REMOVE and run the REPAIR for IE6. (even after I told him I only use Firefox). Then he had me go to CONTROL PANEL / NETWORK, and told me that was wrong. I had the following TCP/IP > Dial-up Adaptor TCP/IP > Dial-up Adaptor #2 (VPN Support) TCP/IP > Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Desktop Connection He told me to remove TCP/IP > Dial-up Adaptor #2 (VPN Support) and leave the others. After I got off the phone, I tried to dial. I cant even access the modem now. I restored TCP/IP > Dial-up Adaptor #2 (VPN Support) I also removed and reinstalled all the modems (using the same drivers). No matter what I do, I can not connect. In fact nothing will access the modem. Even the PHONE DIALER (built into Windows) can not find the modem. I have tried everything and have no idea what else to do to fix it. I called back to my ISP and they told me my computer needs to be taken in for repair (after they fucked it up), and told me that Win98 does not connect properly anyhow and I should install XP). [I felt like telling the asshole to shove XP up his ass. since I have used Win98 for years to connect and I hate XP] After spending 6 hours trying to fix this, I have run out of ideas. Running INTERNET CONNECTION WIZARD keeps searching for a modem and it tells me to manually find a driver and never goes past that point Everytime I try to run it, that is as far as it goes. **** HOWEVER I am using that same modem and same computer right now. I have a barebones installation of Win98se on another small hard drive. I unplugged my regular harddrive and plugged in this one. I could dial right away without any problems. But, I am still only getting 24K again. Can anyone please tell me what to do to fix this. I have no idea what else to do. Needless to say, I am going to begin looking for another ISP.     - Continous problem w/Adobe Reader........... Problem: Each time I download documents,etc...in PDF format, when I try to print said doc(s), a rectangle pops up stating "Unable to begin print job.     - system freeze as Youtube web page loads Over the last three days, I've tried to access two separate youtube links on two separate occasions to find the W98 system freezes as the page is initially displayed. No keybd/mouse response. Required a hardware reboot to recover. I don't normally access youtube, but had done so in the previous week without problems. First link was: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZM779jJJFo The first time the problem occurred, I did a quick disk check - lost clusters found (and repaired). I retried the same link with number crunching background activity disabled - with the same result. Repeated disk check and then attempted to run defrag - incomplete after hitting a bad sector. This was repaired by running a complete disk check, including the surface test, after which the defrag would complete. Retried the link a third time with number crunching disabled - with the same result. Disk checked again without errors. The failed attempt to reach a differing Youtube link today (same system freeze), suggests that the problem wasn't going away by itself. The browser used is still the older Mozilla 1.7.11 - no changes here in over a year, and none expected in the future (without migrating to firefox or seamonkey). Trying for the same link using IE6 (rarely used but as up to date as MS permits) I got a blue screen that would not recover but that allowed a keybd ctrl/alt/del to reboot. Repeating this (if only to note down the OE exception number) produced normal performance.....? Repeating the attempt using default Mozilla then also produced normal performance. MS Explorer on Win 98 system collects cookies like crazy even with MV Host file installed.. Ok. As a test I cleared out all temp and cookies, to BLANK. Cleared out Recycle Bin. Rebooted. Went to a SINGLE website to view a a tour for a home. And VOILA! Thousands [well it seemed like thousands] of cookies with inappropriate URL addresses insinuated themselves right back again. These are cookies not even associated with the tour. How is that possible? As part of this experiment, I didn't go to any of the old URL's but somehow their cookies pop right back the minute I got back on line. Is there someway to stop this in the future? Please don't tell me to delete the HISTORY files in Explorer. I really need most of that. There should be some way to alleviate this collecting of cookies.     - Internet Explorer Downloads When connecting to Int. Explorer, I receive an offer to upgrade to 7.0. I can't use this version with Win 98. However, I can't get rid of this screen offering the upgrade. It appeared last week and there is no delete option.     - Successful AWE64 ISA PnP installation! Recently, I posted a message to this newsgroup, the subject was - ISA Plug and Play not working (clean install) I am very pleased to say that I have fixed the problem: I am now able to insert an AWE64 ISA PnP sound card inside the Win98SE PC, and the PC correctly identifies it, and everything appears to be working great. Summary of fixed problem: I think that the Value AWE64 card that I was using (before a 2nd AWE64 *gold* card arrived this morning for me to test) may have been faulty. Carefully examining one the only configurable jumper, which allows the user to disable midi functionality (I think), it looked damaged. Also, perhaps the "ISA slot pins" were dirty, I'm not too sure, maybe it also needed cleaning? I'd really like to thank everyone on this newsgroup forum who took the time to help me out with this problem, I'm so grateful for all the really excellent advice I received.     - Windows Protection Error Again! I posted this problem a few weeks ago and got it resolved, but it has resurfaced. A few facts are different this time. Started to do the traditional 'cleanup' of an install and found the 'My
Bluetooth Places' icon on the desktop will not allow me to delete it.
Tweakui does not show it on the 'desktop' tab for icons. I figure it must be
a registry entry that needs removing but not sure. Can anyone help with some
info. on how to delete this thing?

It may be a NameSpace item.
If so remove it from the Registry using Regedit.
It should appear under the key: (along with the Recycle Bin, Inbox
etc.)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace

It is good practice to export any key before deletion in case of
error.

Don't delete this one. It is the Recycle Bin.
