    - boot disk Hello again....... I wrote on Sunday with regards to being unable to get my computer started up. I can't get past the DELL LOGO screen and then it goes to a black screen with the cursor blinking on the left top. I tried the F8, the control key, F5 key............... so far, NIX! And so someone asked if I had a boot disk. YES, I do....but before I put it in and start trying........could someone tell me what the procedure is and how I should respond to hopefully get my old girl up and running.     - Inbox contents simply vanished In OE 6, Windows 98, the entire contents of the Inbox just vanished after restarting computer. There were about 4 weeks of e-mail in there. Other folders do not seem to be affected. I looked in the Outlook Express folder on my hard drive, and the Inbox file at this address: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{9226D728-E116-11DA-8D61-00045A5FABE0}\Microsoft\Outlook Express was down to something like 130 KB, containing just a lot of unreadable code. I normally move Inbox contents to other folders regularly to keep Inbox from getting too large. I've never seen anything like this. The contents of a huge file simply vanishing.     - BIG Problem I installed the Unofficial Windows 98 patches. Now the computer does not go into Windows, not normal nor Safe Mode. I get a fatal exception error at 0187 (or (0167):BFF9E0BF. I can also sometimes see an error in VXD VWIN32(05). Can someone help me get the computer to work again? I couldn't reinstall Windows 98 from a CD either.     - Accessing identical hard drive Background: Promise 133 controller card, 2 WDC 80GB hard drives on removable trays. Promise bios shows identical drives. First master (alone), second master w/slave (DVD burner). Unable to access 2nd hard drive. Have tried: Simple boot floppy with ME dos on it, and same with 98SE dos on it at boot time. DriveImage 2002 with 98SE dos on it. XP w/SP2. WinME window environment. 98SE environment. Swapping drives in trays and using the unaccessible drive by itself. Swapping tray insertable locations. Jumpers adjusted accordingly. During floppy boot (both 98SE and ME), have observed the access LED on the tray indicating access to that hard drive. PC locks up everytime. Similar in XP boot, ME and 98SE when I open windows explorer to investigate My Computer. WDC diagnostic tool on bootable floppy similar results. -- Dave How about a tax to support any military conflict/police action over 3 months old?     - computer won't start up Hello. Yesterday I started up my computer quite normally. When I opened OE it froze. This happened a number of times and so I restarted in SAFE MODE. From there I did a number of things like VIRUS CHECK, SPYBOT and did a delete and clean up of files. Scan disk, defrag, etc. Later I went into normal mode and tried again.......another freeze up. Did a restart and then disabled NORTON Internet Security and ANTIVIRUS. Then OE opened fine and I was able to do a little more work online. Shut down normally. Today I pushed the start button......did NOT notice any peculiar sounds or something out of the ordinary....the screen went just past the DELL COMPUTER SCREEN and then to a cursor on the top left, it made its usual starting noise and it stops there.     - My mouse gets the jitters I ran for virus and adware. Nothing. Periodically, the mouse starts to jump about erratically. Like the PC is really busy even though it shouldn't be. This gets worse until it is not usable. Continues even after all applications are closed. Symptoms are gone after reboot. I never had this on my old PC running at 450MHz on win 98. With "Secure II Plus" plugged in, I launched USBVIEW and I was able to see the VID (OX05DC) and PID (OXA702). I added that information to "JDUSBMS.INF" file, but it was unable to install a driver on my Windows 98se computer when I plugged in "Secure II Plus". I will seek Maximus Decim's NUSB and see if I have better luck with that.     - Fresh install rebooting issue I have an 80GB HDD on which I treid to install Win98. I copied the files to the HDD and ran the setup from that directory. After all of the files loaded, the PC rebooted and said it was running windows for the first time. It then rebooted in the middle of the splash screen.     - destorying the hard drive My daughter has an old Gateway computer running Windows 98. She says no one wants it because it is slow and obsolete and she wants to turn it into the local recycling place. She is worried about (personal) data on the hard drive. I wonder if reformatting the HD will destroy all the data? My old W95 computer, I took the HD out and smashed it with a sledge hammer, but she doesn't want to do that.     - 98SE Runs in MSDOS Compatibility Mode I have just upgraded my system with a new motherboard (Biostar NF4 Ultra A9A) that has an NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset. Does anyone know how to get the 98SE operating system up and running with this motherboard or maybe a work around? I am able to boot the system but the Desktop looks like a Safe Mode display and the Hard Drive or CD drive is not listed in Device Manager only a Floppy Drive. I can access the FAT partition with no problem as it is listed in My Computer as C drive. The system runs in MSDOS Compatibility Mode. I tried to do a registry repair deleting the NOIDE value but there isnâ??t one listed. What could be causing the problem? Can anyone help me in rectifying the situation?     - locked out after running utility to clear disk space I got a message that my hard drive was full and a popup asking if I wanted to run a utility to clear space. I ran the utility and immediately couldn't get into any MS programs. If I selected a program, e.g. Word, I got a message like unable to access word.inl (not sure about extension). Also, the icons for the MS programs looked like document rather than program icons. I restarted my computer and the system now wants me to reinstall Windows98. I have no idea where the disks are, and it seems like I may have just deleted one key module. Can anyone recommend a way to see if it is still on my computer (I assume I can start up in DOS, although the Windows 98 install wizard starts automatically) or download it ?     - help = can't edit hosts file because it won't let me pick a program. I've just had something weird pop up. I tried to edit my hosts file, but instead of being asked what program I want to use to open it with, I got a dialog box telling me "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View and then clicking Folder Options".     - scanreg I recently discovered that my daily scanreg was not occurring. When I opened in MSDOS mode and did a scanreg /restore I found that the five backups were several weeks old. I made a registry change by adding /autorun after scanreg.exe and moving the scanreg.exe file to C:\Windows and got it to work again but now I have two new problems: (1) Every time I re-boot, scanreg runs so that if I re-boot 5 or more times in one 24 hour period, I have 5 identical files. Previously scanreg only ran the first boot of each day. The also are all identified as not having been started where as in the past, the older ones were sometimes labeled as having "started". (2) Every time I boot, during the boot sequence, a black box MSDOS window appears showing that scanreg and scanregW have been initiated. This box NEVER appeared before I made the changes above. While scanreg is now working, I have somehow screwed up the sequence so that the above problems have occurred. My questions: Where should the scanreg.exe file reside. Is /autorun after the scanreg entry in the registry appropriate/necessary. It wasn't there before. How do I suppress the MSDOS scanreg box from displaying during boot How can I get back to a single scanreg action at initial daily boot and not every time I boot.     - custom order of Desktop icons messed up, would restoring registry I had just changed my screen resolution on my older win98 computer before starting a movie to play it full screen without slowdowns when the computer promptly crashed by locking up on the BSOD. After hitting the reset button, when the computer booted up again, the screen resolution was far lower than I thought possible. It was at least as low as 320x240, if not lower. It looked like magnifier was in use, except that the whole screen was repesented in this reduced space. With some difficulity because the option I needed was off the screen, I was able to adjust the display settings to fix things, but this messed up the custom order of my desktop icons to a seemingly random order. I've spent a lot of time optimizing them. It has persisted after a reboot. Would restoring one of the automatic registry backups fix this? I haven't done anything that would make any significant changes to the registry in at least a month (aside from this problem), and figuring I turn the computer off every night, restoring the registry shouldn't hurt anything, or so I hope.     - Quirks in Scandisk, Chkdsk, Fixmbr, Fixboot I recently had to repair file system corruption for two XP users, one with a FAT32 partition, the other with NTFS. Unfortunately I have little experience with XP so I struggled quite a bit. Anyway I discovered that Microsoft's disc repair tools were flawed in several ways. Case #1 ------- The PC with the NTFS partition had an inaccessible registry file, c:\windows\system32\config\system. It couldn't be deleted, copied, or renamed, so the procedure in this MSKB article could not be applied: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I attempted to run CHKDSK from the repair console of a bootable XP CD, but the file system was deemed to have unrecoverable errors. I then installed the drive into an external USB enclosure, attached it to a working XP system, and ran CHKDSK from within a CMD window. CHKDSK found many problems, including an MFT issue, all of which were fixed. Prior to running CHKDSK, I tried to repair the drive from within the GUI via Tools > Properties, but this also produced an "unrecoverable" message. Case #2 ------- The PC with the FAT32 partition could not boot. It produced a "missing NTLDR" error. This suggested that the MBR and boot sector were probably OK, and that the error was somewhere in the FATs or directory structure. I booted into the repair console of an XP CD and tried a DIR command. This produced a "could not be enumerated" error. DISKPART was able to see the full partition (38GB), so the partition table and MBR were apparently OK. CHKDSK deemed that the drive was "unrecoverable". In desperation I tried the FIXBOOT command and that's when things became extremely bizarre. A DIR command was now able to see the C: drive, but there were no files! The partition size was reported as 10MB (or was it 10GB?). I reconfirmed with DISKPART that the partition table was still intact, but in desperation I now tried FIXMBR. This command warned me that the MBR contained unknown or damaged code, so I went ahead and allowed it to refresh the code. It reported success but when I ran FIXMBR a second time, it still complained of unknown or damaged code. Now I'd had enough, so I installed the drive into an external USB enclosure and attached it to a working XP system. I used DEBUG from with a CMD window to view the drive's boot sector and was horrified to see a FAT12 signature. For some inexplicable reason, FIXBOOT had replaced a FAT32 HD boot sector with a FAT12 floppy boot sector! CHKDSK was unable to repair this problem, and My Computer showed the drive as having a capacity of 10MB (or 10GB?). I then used DEBUG to zero the contents of the boot sector, thinking that now CHKDSK would have a better chance to repair it, but CHKDSK now complained that it would not operate on a RAW volume. Attempting to repair the drive from within the GUI using Tools > Options produced no response. Now I was getting desperate. I took the USB drive to my Windows 98SE box and to my surprise Explorer was able to see the entire drive with all the original files apparently still intact! SCANDISK determined that the first copy of the FAT was corrupt, but it didn't tell me that the boot sector was missing. It just used the backup copy of the boot sector (logical sector 6) and behaved as if all was well. With some trepidation I allowed Scandisk to repair the FAT, and to fix the misreported file sizes for SYSTEM.LOG and SOFTWARE.LOG. However, Scandisk did not replace the damaged boot sector. I had to do this manually via DEBUG in a DOS box, by copying the contents of sector 6 to sector 0. After doing this, I was able to see the all the files in a working XP system (in the USB enclosure), and CHKDSK reported that all was fine. However, I was still unable to boot from the drive when I reinstalled it in the original XP box. So what was wrong? I looked closely at the boot sector again and found that it was a Win9x boot sector, ie there were references to IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and WINBOOT.SYS, but no reference to NTLDR. WTF! I decided to load XP onto a spare HD that had been FDISKed and FORMATted by Windows 98SE and sure enough XP replaced the boot sector with its own FAT32 code, but it did not touch the backup boot sector. So XP had created a file system that had an XP boot sector and a Win9X backup. So what to do now? I decided to make a hybrid boot sector by using the tail end of an XP FAT32 boot sector for the code, and the beginning of the Win9X boot sector for the data. After restoring this patched boot sector to sector 0, the drive booted in the original machine and all was well. BTW, boot sector templates can also be extracted from AUTOCHK.EXE. As a final check, I used MBRtool to make a copy of the MBR code. I then compared this with an MBR template that I found inside DISKPART.EXE. There was no difference.     - 98SE/ME NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset Driver I am running a triple boot system, 98SE / ME / XP Pro. I have just upgraded with a new motherboard with an NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset. Does anyone know of a 98SE / ME driver for this chipset or maybe a work around in order to get these two FAT systems up and running? I am not looking to use any of the special features of this chipset like RAID or SATA, I just want these systems to operate the way they were originally designed with the new motherboard? I am able to boot the systems but the Desktop looks like a Safe Mode display and there are no Hard Drives or CD drives listed in Device Manager or My Computer, only a Floppy Drive. I can access the two FAT partitions with no problem as they are listed in My Computer as C & D drives. The systems run in MSDOS Compatibility Mode and I am unable to do a registry repair deleting the NOIDE value as there is none listed. Any help in solving the problem would be most appreciated.     - BIOS upgrades - reflashing the BIOS Just spent an "interesting" (to put it mildly!) weekend on this project to enable a microprocessor upgrade. I wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted, suffice it to say, or you might end up with a paperweight. :-) You know, it wouldn't be quite so bad, except that in some cases, there is no reverse path available (i..e, it's a one way trip) - which seems unforgiveable, on their part! My question is: why do these BIOS manufacturers sometimes make it so damn difficult to upgrade/downgrade or go back to a previous version (especially when going from one manufacturer to one its subsidiaries, or vice versa (like Dell and Intel)? And not only that, but even block certain upgrades with certain chips, just out of self-centered arrogance on their part (and not due to real chip limitations)? Instead, I downloaded Fire Fox and used that browser. Now I can see my balance, etc. Why I didn't get any kind of warning with Netscape, is a mystery. Does Windows 98 se have a problem with a 1 gig stick of memory? I have
two PCs and both are dual boot with 98 and XP. Both motherboards support
up two two 1 gig sticks of memory. When I tried to use one niether would
boot up in 98, With 1.5 gig of memory it says there is insufficient
memory to start windows. The memory is compatible with the boards
according to the web sites. Even XP, which did boot up, was noticably
slower with 1.5 gig of memory than with 768 meg. Why would this be?

Thanks for the link Fan, I have been looking for a solution for my dual boot
computer with 2 gigs, I found out how to boot to 1 gig and suspected 98
couldn't use 2 gigs. Thanks now I can boot into 98 without having to remove a
gig of RAM every time.
