    - Letter from Windows Live Mail team Did not want to join the other post on this. I got a letter from the above stating that if I was using Outlook Express to access my Windows Live Hotmail account that it would no longer work later this year. According to Qwest my ISP, I have a Windows Live Premium account as part of my broadband package. If what I am reading is correct then, because I have the premium account, I will not have to worry about using OE to send and download my Hotmail. Is that correct?     - CD PLAYER PROBLEM The CD drive in my Inspiron 7000 reads and opens things like pdf files, but will not play commercial or burned CDs. WinMediaPlayer message says it cannot handle this type file (.cda) Sometimes another message says, "Unable to find file".     - Dead Laptop comes back to "Life" Mystery Hi, I have a Compaq Presario 1200XL110 laptop (bought 2nd hand) with bad display (display "wires" disconnected). I used an external Monitor. I kept the laptop plugged into AC all the time and the battery installed. I had no problems the first few days. Note: the laptop was on from 7:30AM until around 5PM every day. Then one morning, I tried to turn it on, but absolutely nothing happened. The only indicator that was lit, which is always lit, is the plugged into AC indicator. Note: I am a TV, etc. (not computer) serviceman. I won't go into details of the tests I performed, which included testing the power switch. . I removed a dead (!!) RTC/CMOS battery. Note: When the laptop "worked", there was no sign (loss of time/date) that the RTC/CMOS battery was going bad. I put this laptop in a box (main battery removed). About 5 days later, I hooked it up to AC, but left the main battery out (RTC/CMOS battery removed). When I tried to turn it on, absolutely nothing happened so I put it back in the box (main battery removed). Over a month later, I hooked up the laptop (main battery removed & no RTC battery). When I pressed the power button, it booted up!!!!!!! I repeated shut down and power up. It boots up every time, although I see a warning message caused by no RTC/CMOS battery. I installed a new RTC/CMOS battery. I now use it on AC without the main battery installed. When I shut it down for the day, I remove AC power via the switch on the power strip. Is there any simple test to eliminate one of those possibilities (for a completely dead computer - no lights, no fans, no hard disk activity, nothing)? I have read that it is possible to check the power supply by temporarily shorting two pins together, but I don't know which two pins, and I don't know if that will work without any load on the power supply.     - Successful AWE64 ISA PnP installation! Recently, I posted a message to this newsgroup, the subject was - ISA Plug and Play not working (clean install) I am very pleased to say that I have fixed the problem: I am now able to insert an AWE64 ISA PnP sound card inside the Win98SE PC, and the PC correctly identifies it, and everything appears to be working great. Summary of fixed problem: I think that the Value AWE64 card that I was using (before a 2nd AWE64 *gold* card arrived this morning for me to test) may have been faulty. Carefully examining one the only configurable jumper, which allows the user to disable midi functionality (I think), it looked damaged. Also, perhaps the "ISA slot pins" were dirty, I'm not too sure, maybe it also needed cleaning? I'd really like to thank everyone on this newsgroup forum who took the time to help me out with this problem, I'm so grateful for all the really excellent advice I received.     - Windows Protection Error Again! I posted this problem a few weeks ago and got it resolved, but it has resurfaced. A few facts are different this time. SAME AS THE LAST TIME: I have Windows 98 Second edition. I made no changes to my computer in the recent past. All of the sudden, when I boot up I get this message "Windows Protection Error." It suggests that I open in safe mode. I am able to do that. What do I have to do to get rid of this problem and start using my computer in the normal mode?     - Acronis Disk Director has caused a serious problem on my PC I thought I'd install Acronis Disk Director (version 10) on to my new Windows 98SE PC. I wanted to make a backup of my HDD by copying the whole C:\ partition. When Disk Director rebooted to perform this operation, I get a Windows Protection Fault, and the only way I can now use my computer is if I boot into safe mode. Please can someone tell me how to remove Disk Director so that I can boot-up my PC normally, without needing to go into safe mode? I am assuming that this is a big all-in-one update to Windows 98, which is what I am after. In the FAQ section on this webpage, it says that the "Supported versions and languages" are 2003, XP and 2000 -- no mention of 98.     - Life after Windows 98SE For several years I have been dreading the day when my old 300 MHz P11 Windows 98 machine could no longer cut it. That happened recently with the failure of my master hard drive. Fortunately, my slave was a bootable clone of the master so with a jumper change, I got back up and running. But the handwriting was on the wall so I started looking for a new machine. After much personal research, and advice from knowledgeable friends (all of whom said, "avoid Vista like the plague"), I was able to get an Intel-based, dual core Dell XP model that met my relatively modest needs for a bit over $500, less display. Surprisingly, It worked fine out of the box. I was able to use my existing 19" flat panel display and my "natural" angled keyboard with the help of a $15, PS2-to-USB adaptor. Since my scanner and printer were ancient ten-year-olds, I found a middle grade, all-in-one Canon unit for $130. I love it. To my delight, I found that by configuring XP in the "classical" mode, I was able to emulate the look and feel of Windows 98SE. As I am the only user, I avoided the cmos administrator and user passwords so that when I press the "on" button, it boots right up ready for use in about half the time of my old machine. I also opted out of all the MS "protection", staying with my comfortable old freebies, Avast!, ZoneAlarm, AdAware, Host file, SpywareBlaster and SpyBot S&D. The end result is that the main differences I see between my reliable, but slooow old 98SE machine and my new one is the lightning speed with which everything happens and the smooth video renditions that were so jerky and out-of-sync with the old dog. Also, I should add that I haven't had a crash in the 3 weeks I have been using it. At the suggestion of several on this board, I have kept the old machine handy so that with a quick change of the display, internet connection and keyboard, I can be back in business with it. I did that several times during the first week or so but I am finding that the speed of the new machine is so addictive that I probably won't be reverting very often. So, the message for you Windows 98SE guys, who like me, just couldn't bear the thought of moving out of your comfort zone, is that you may be surprised at how little you lose and how much you can benefit by moving up to an XP-based dual core machine. The cost is surprisingly low and the result is a machine with the look and feel of a very fast 98SE PC. A word about XP availability. Dell seems to be the only ready- made PC supplier who still offers XP. You can still go to the customs guys for it but MS plans to quit selling it by the end of this year AFAIK. The driver installation software (autorun.exe), from a third party download, won't run at all on the PC. There is no apparent opening of the program and no error messages are produced.     - ISA Plug and Play not working (clean install) Are there are any noteworthy BIOS or Windows 98 settings I need to be aware of to get Win98 successfully installed on a QDI Advance 9 or 10 mobo? (VIA chipset). The reason I ask is that I am having a problem with Win98's ISA Plug and Play mechanism. Win98 is unable to detect any PnP ISA cards. Please note this occurs with the CMOS settings cleared and a clean Win98 install, plus I'm just using a basic VGA graphics card only, or occasionally this graphics card with a Soundblaster AWE64 (PnP ISA). For either hardware configuration mentioned above, inside Device Manager there appears to be some kind of resource problem with this System resource: "IO read data port for ISA Plug and Play enumerator" Looking at the configuration details, there's a conflict with both the Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo) and also with VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller. I've tried changing the above-mentioned "ISA PnP enumerator's" resources to fix the conflict, but my changes don't appear to make an effect. Also, I don't seem to be able to adjust either of the two conflicting Controller's IRQ values, although I'm not too sure if that would help. I went to the chipset maker (VIA) website and downloaded a "4-in-1" chipset driver package and installed it, but unfortunately it didn't fix the problem. The Lessons generated need to run on school computers from Windows 98 through Windows XP. These Lessons also need to exchange information with remote servers using XMLHTTP. I have 32-bit DLLs that can do the data exchange using XMLHTTP tested out OK. I need to be able to exchange integer values, strings and status between the 16-bit Lessons and the 32-bit DLLs. The Legacy 16-bit Lessons can link with 16-bit DLLs. I have tested this and it works OK. But the 16-bit Lessons are not able to link to 32-bit DLLs directly. The plan is to build 16-bit DLLs that link with the 16-bit Lessons and then use flat thunks between the 16-bit DLLs and 32-bit DLLs to get the communication functions that are needed. I am using the methods described in KB154093 "How To Call 32-bit Code from 16-bit Code Under Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition" in building the 16-bit DLLs, thunking script and 32-bit DLLs. Quite a bit of information is missing. There does not seem to be any documentation on thunk.exe, the thunking compiler. There does not seem to be any documentation on the thunking script language. The formats for the integer and other variable types changed between the 16-bit and 32-bit DLLs. I am not sure what data format the thunk script is using in its declarations. I am using VC++ 1.52 to build the 16-bit DLLs. I am using VC++ 6.0 to build the 32-bit DLLs. I am using thunk.exe, rc.exe and ml.exe found in the Win98 DDK to build the flat thunk as instructed. I have scraped up enough information on the web to build the DLLs and the flat thunk. It compiles and links OK but any information received by the 16 bit DLL from the 32 bit DLL appears to be corrupted by the flat thunk. I can not send constants as int, WORD, DWORD, LONG or LPSTR from the 32 bit DLL to the 16 bit DLL. ALL values from the 32 bit DLL seem to be corrupted no matter the data type. I am not yet able to test data from the 16-bit DLL to the 32-bit DLL until I can get the correct data returned. I am trying very simple and straight forward tests. I am building and running these components on a Windows XP Professional system for testing. Does anyone know why this method described in the KB article does not work? An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing a user to visit a website that hosts a specially crafted SWF file. The Adobe Flash browser plugin is available for multiple web browsers and operating systems, any of which could be affected. II. Impact The impacts of these vulnerabilities vary. The most severe of these vulnerabilities allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or conduct cross-site scripting attacks. III.     - Stop the system from changing focus to another program As one might expect here, I have windows 98SE. My email program used to grab the focus of the system sometimes when new email came in. Lately, it grabs it every time, I think. And Eudora is on top, when I'm trying to look at something else. My browser, FireFox2, also grabs the focus when a page is loading. It can do it 3 times for just one screen, at different stages. It's driving me crazy. CAn I turn off the switching of focus to the program that has retrieved new files, or whatever the rule is here? Can I just turn it off altogether so that I am the sole decisor of what program is on top? Thanks.     - installation problems Okay, so now that I've got my hardware drivers all in place (or most of them), I'm installing a couple of applications, but I've run into a bit of trouble. When trying to install "Mavis Beakon Teaches Typing Deluxe, v. 16", about a third of the way through the installation I get the message "Cannot update uninstaller log file. Current File: *.*" I had this app running on this PC before reinstalling Windows, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I tried installing an earlier version I had around (v. 12.01), but about two-thirds of the way through I got an error that simple read "Current File: *.*" In both cases, after clicking OK, the installation shut down. Because I got a similar error in both cases, I'm assuming the problem isn't with the software CD (both of which I've used on my other PCs), right? Any idea? Also, I was wondering what I should do in the way of antivirus/spyware removal/etc. This PC's never really been connected to the net before, so it didn't have much of a need for it.     - Installing my monitor (first, sorry for not answering the questions addressed to me last time I asked a question like this; I didn't realize there were new responses to my question!) I've recently reinstalled Windows 98 on an old PC; I completely wiped the drive and started over. Now, I'm looking for drivers for my monitor--a Samsung Syncmaster 753df--as I can't set the resolution any higher 640 x 480 (before the reinstall, I had it at at least 1024 x 786). I've searched all over the net (especially driversguide.com) but haven't succeeded in finding anything that works. I've tried using the installation disk that came with the monitor, but when I try to run the executable on it (which works fine on another old win98 laptop), I get This program has perfomed an illegal operation and will be shut down Details: MONSETUP caused an invalid page fault in module DIRAPI.DLL at 015f:68085667 The number at the end is the same each time I try this.     - Application program only runs in Win98 "Safe Mode" I am trying to run the drawing program AutoSketch V2.1 in Win98 SE "Normal Mode". It always returns the error message: Illegal operation - Sketch caused a general protection fault in module SKETCH.EXE at 0090:000007703. The program will shut down. Also, the mouse operates strangely until I close AutoSketch down. AutoSketch runs OK if I run it under Win98 SE "Safe Mode". What does this suggest and what can I do about it?
