    - windows 98 outlook express email Hi, this discussion group is great. My email , outlook express explorer 6 , i cannot delete none of the emails. I try to press the delete button and nothing happens. Its there , but nothing. My emails keep coming and i cannot delete one of them. I even tryed to delete all of them under tools but that is not highlited or i can not use. I am not sure what to do. I have reloaded outlook twice now , but still the same.     - custom order of Desktop icons messed up, would restoring registry I had just changed my screen resolution on my older win98 computer before starting a movie to play it full screen without slowdowns when the computer promptly crashed by locking up on the BSOD. After hitting the reset button, when the computer booted up again, the screen resolution was far lower than I thought possible. It was at least as low as 320x240, if not lower. It looked like magnifier was in use, except that the whole screen was repesented in this reduced space. With some difficulity because the option I needed was off the screen, I was able to adjust the display settings to fix things, but this messed up the custom order of my desktop icons to a seemingly random order. I've spent a lot of time optimizing them. It has persisted after a reboot. Would restoring one of the automatic registry backups fix this? I haven't done anything that would make any significant changes to the registry in at least a month (aside from this problem), and figuring I turn the computer off every night, restoring the registry shouldn't hurt anything, or so I hope.     - Windows protection error I have Windows 98 Second edition. I made no changes to my computer in the recent past. All of the sudden, when I boot up I get this message "Windows Protection Error."     - Lexar "FireFly" USB Flash Drive for Windows 98se Hi, I have been using a 1GB Lexar "Jump Drive" USB flash drive ("thumb drive") for a couple years on my Windows 98se computer without any problems. Recently, I decided to buy another Lexar !GB, but nobody sells a Windows 98 version anymore. I don't want a used one so I took a chance on a Lexar "FireFly" 1GB (WinXP/Vista/Mac) and I hope that somehow, I can get it to "work" on my Win98 computer. There are no drivers for "FireFly" at Lexar's web site. I searched the web for about 1/2 hr, and I didn't find a source. Do you know a technique, or a source where I can download the driver, even if it's a Windows XP driver?     - Quirks in Scandisk, Chkdsk, Fixmbr, Fixboot I recently had to repair file system corruption for two XP users, one with a FAT32 partition, the other with NTFS. Unfortunately I have little experience with XP so I struggled quite a bit. Anyway I discovered that Microsoft's disc repair tools were flawed in several ways. Case #1 ------- The PC with the NTFS partition had an inaccessible registry file, c:\windows\system32\config\system. It couldn't be deleted, copied, or renamed, so the procedure in this MSKB article could not be applied: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 I attempted to run CHKDSK from the repair console of a bootable XP CD, but the file system was deemed to have unrecoverable errors. I then installed the drive into an external USB enclosure, attached it to a working XP system, and ran CHKDSK from within a CMD window. CHKDSK found many problems, including an MFT issue, all of which were fixed. Prior to running CHKDSK, I tried to repair the drive from within the GUI via Tools > Properties, but this also produced an "unrecoverable" message. Case #2 ------- The PC with the FAT32 partition could not boot. It produced a "missing NTLDR" error. This suggested that the MBR and boot sector were probably OK, and that the error was somewhere in the FATs or directory structure. I booted into the repair console of an XP CD and tried a DIR command. This produced a "could not be enumerated" error. DISKPART was able to see the full partition (38GB), so the partition table and MBR were apparently OK. CHKDSK deemed that the drive was "unrecoverable". In desperation I tried the FIXBOOT command and that's when things became extremely bizarre. A DIR command was now able to see the C: drive, but there were no files! The partition size was reported as 10MB (or was it 10GB?). I reconfirmed with DISKPART that the partition table was still intact, but in desperation I now tried FIXMBR. This command warned me that the MBR contained unknown or damaged code, so I went ahead and allowed it to refresh the code. It reported success but when I ran FIXMBR a second time, it still complained of unknown or damaged code. Now I'd had enough, so I installed the drive into an external USB enclosure and attached it to a working XP system. I used DEBUG from with a CMD window to view the drive's boot sector and was horrified to see a FAT12 signature. For some inexplicable reason, FIXBOOT had replaced a FAT32 HD boot sector with a FAT12 floppy boot sector! CHKDSK was unable to repair this problem, and My Computer showed the drive as having a capacity of 10MB (or 10GB?). I then used DEBUG to zero the contents of the boot sector, thinking that now CHKDSK would have a better chance to repair it, but CHKDSK now complained that it would not operate on a RAW volume. Attempting to repair the drive from within the GUI using Tools > Options produced no response. Now I was getting desperate. I took the USB drive to my Windows 98SE box and to my surprise Explorer was able to see the entire drive with all the original files apparently still intact! SCANDISK determined that the first copy of the FAT was corrupt, but it didn't tell me that the boot sector was missing. It just used the backup copy of the boot sector (logical sector 6) and behaved as if all was well. With some trepidation I allowed Scandisk to repair the FAT, and to fix the misreported file sizes for SYSTEM.LOG and SOFTWARE.LOG. However, Scandisk did not replace the damaged boot sector. I had to do this manually via DEBUG in a DOS box, by copying the contents of sector 6 to sector 0. After doing this, I was able to see the all the files in a working XP system (in the USB enclosure), and CHKDSK reported that all was fine. However, I was still unable to boot from the drive when I reinstalled it in the original XP box. So what was wrong? I looked closely at the boot sector again and found that it was a Win9x boot sector, ie there were references to IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and WINBOOT.SYS, but no reference to NTLDR. WTF! I decided to load XP onto a spare HD that had been FDISKed and FORMATted by Windows 98SE and sure enough XP replaced the boot sector with its own FAT32 code, but it did not touch the backup boot sector. So XP had created a file system that had an XP boot sector and a Win9X backup. So what to do now? I decided to make a hybrid boot sector by using the tail end of an XP FAT32 boot sector for the code, and the beginning of the Win9X boot sector for the data. After restoring this patched boot sector to sector 0, the drive booted in the original machine and all was well. BTW, boot sector templates can also be extracted from AUTOCHK.EXE. As a final check, I used MBRtool to make a copy of the MBR code. I then compared this with an MBR template that I found inside DISKPART.EXE. There was no difference.     - 98SE/ME NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset Driver I am running a triple boot system, 98SE / ME / XP Pro. I have just upgraded with a new motherboard with an NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset. Does anyone know of a 98SE / ME driver for this chipset or maybe a work around in order to get these two FAT systems up and running? I am not looking to use any of the special features of this chipset like RAID or SATA, I just want these systems to operate the way they were originally designed with the new motherboard? I am able to boot the systems but the Desktop looks like a Safe Mode display and there are no Hard Drives or CD drives listed in Device Manager or My Computer, only a Floppy Drive. I can access the two FAT partitions with no problem as they are listed in My Computer as C & D drives. The systems run in MSDOS Compatibility Mode and I am unable to do a registry repair deleting the NOIDE value as there is none listed. Any help in solving the problem would be most appreciated. Anyways, I found an app that required it I don't know what the base version is on Windows98SE (assuming there is one, and that its even installed).     - BIOS upgrades - reflashing the BIOS Just spent an "interesting" (to put it mildly!) weekend on this project to enable a microprocessor upgrade. I wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted, suffice it to say, or you might end up with a paperweight. :-) You know, it wouldn't be quite so bad, except that in some cases, there is no reverse path available (i..e, it's a one way trip) - which seems unforgiveable, on their part! My question is: why do these BIOS manufacturers sometimes make it so damn difficult to upgrade/downgrade or go back to a previous version (especially when going from one manufacturer to one its subsidiaries, or vice versa (like Dell and Intel)? And not only that, but even block certain upgrades with certain chips, just out of self-centered arrogance on their part (and not due to real chip limitations)? Instead, I downloaded Fire Fox and used that browser. Now I can see my balance, etc. Why I didn't get any kind of warning with Netscape, is a mystery.     - Thing that flash by at startup are not always the same? How come with a number of windows 98 machines I have no two have the same thing coming up during the startup process? One just starts with a windows cloud picture windows then goes black then returns before finally I see the desktop. Another one has some screens of text on black mixed in sequence with the windows 98 cloud picture screen. And I also noticed that after months of a certain text on the screen one day it had some different information in text coming up for a few days then I guess it went back to the way it had been. Greetings, Today, my 98 pc crashed and when I restarted it, it came up in the mode where you get 5 or so choices, normal, safe mode,etc. The #5 "command prompt only" was highlighted and I couldn't choose another, and all I see is the C:\> . What command do I put in to get it started again. I put in the # 5 and "command prompt only" and got "bad command" on both. It also said to run scanreg when it gets started.     - PCMCIA card reader with SRAM card I just installed a PCI adapter to use PCMCIA SRAM cards in my win98 desktop computer. Windows recognized both the adapter and the memory card and installed new drivers. I rebooted. Control panel->System reports the devices are there and working properly. The problem is that the drive has not been assigned a drive letter and doesn't show up in My Computer or Windows File Manager so I can't transfer files to or from the card. There is no icon for it that I can see other than one in the Task Bar that allows you to stop the drive for card removal. It works. What am I missing?     - Connecting USB to Ethernet adaptor Hi- I am trying to attach a USB to Ethernet adaptor to get broadband on my W98SE (this works using a normal USB-B to USB-A connection, but I need a 10m cable, hence ethernet...). I load the adaptors driver disk (does not do much, ie. install- but this installed automatically on my XP). The new hardware wizard proceeds; Unknown device-Search for the best driver-after I specify D:\Windows 98 through browse and click next it says windows is unable to locate a driver for this device. I have tried updaing the driver through the Device Manager (Other devices-Unknown Device) and through installing one of the attachments through Windows Explorer (D:\Windows 98). Does anyone have a suggestion? Is this a W98SE problem as I installed it successfully on XP (as a test). The adaptor is compatible with W98SE.     - Available memory after start-up Not really a problem, but an observation. I run TClock which apart from the date and time in the system tray has been configured to show 'available RAM' For a couple of years I've noticed big variations in the amount of free memory available immediately after boot-up. Hence I've just disabled every thing except TClock via MSCONFIG I have 448 Meg of physical RAM. If I clean boot the PC say ten times in a row, then after start-up, approximately: On about six occasions I have 304 Meg of free memory available On about three occasions I have 264 Meg of free memory On one occasion I have 230 Meg of free memory This is 'repeatable', but it seems random as to which figure I get on startup. I may get two 230s in a row, but will then probably get plenty of 304s before the odd 264 kicks in. Just curious as to where 40 or 70 Meg can occasionally disappear to ? With all the usual stuff (virus checker, firewall, USB monitors etc) loaded, each of these figures drops by some 25 Meg, hence losing 40 or 70 for apparently nothing is peculiar. Running 98SE with 'all available updates' I have noticed on past occasions that some legitimate things seem to get loaded even though there's no call to the EXE anywhere in the registry. Post, the Microtime Computer, that I have been using for several years, has failed and I find it rather difficult to get it operational, again. There is a Primary Master and a Secondary Master HDâ??s installed in it. There are folders in both that have Data that I would like to recover. A more recent Computer, a Sony VAIO, that I am currently using, appears to have all that I would need to connect those HDâ??s and recover the desired Data and back up the same, if desired, on CDâ??s or Iomega Zip 250 MB Disks. The only obstacle is of possible compatibility issues. Some of what follows has been mentioned in various replies in the prior Post. Some new information has been added, since. The storage HD from the failed Computer has similar layout, but the only jumper is at the last top 2 pins closest to the power cable. Again, I assume that it might be OK to connect this HD on the freed up connector of the Sony. As mentioned, the HD, referred by me as Storage HD, had been configured as a Primary Slave in the Computer that had failed. I allowed my curiosity to see if, by connecting the existing Primary Master HD to the end connector of the cable, I might cause any problem. All went well. I was further tempted to connect the storage HD from the failed Computer, but I did not, hoping to first get your ideas about doing so.     - rebooting from boot log disc I have a Gateway CPU it had windows 98se version installed before I dumpped it. I have misplaced my reboot floppy.     - Large Word files and 98SE Word and Win98SE problems I am currently working with a number of large .DOC files, typically 400 pages, lots of photos and diagrams etc. They are between 5 and 60 Meg in size (I know I'm a glutton for punishment, but I didn't create these files) There are two interesting problems: 1) One 50 Meg file always opens in around 10 secs when it is double clicked. Another file of a similar size takes around three minutes to open. In each case the PC was clean booted from cold. 2) I can copy small files from drive to drive with no problem. With an 8 Meg DOC file it takes a little longer - typically 20 seconds. But with a DOC file greater than about 10 Meg: On copying and pasting: a) Nothing happens for around a minute b) Then a dialog box appears stating 'copying - 3 mins left' c) After about five minutes, still '3 minutes left' d) After about ten minutes either it has completed, or its changed to 62,432(etc) mins left, or the PC has locked up. Now if I rename the big file to a .TMP it copies in seconds. Any ideas welcome.     - How to get rid of mouse cursor when no mouse installed? I'm writing a demo program for a win98 system. The system has no keyboard or mouse. It boots to the application and just runs. Problem is that if I remove the mouse, I get the dialog box that complains that a mouse was not found. If I click "don't show this again"...some trick with no mouse or keyboard, the message does not appear again, but there's a mouse cursor smack in the middle of the screen. I want to be able to attach a mouse for diagnostic work, but need the mouse cursor GONE when there's no mouse. As you appear to get an initial finding of the peripherals except the keyboard on POST you might try to refresh the BIOS with a BIOS flash for that motherboard. This would be accomplished with a floppy disk created to automatically boot and flash the motherboard. At this point it appears that this may be a potential fix as there have been findings related to successful use of this technique to reset corrupted BIOS due to electrical issues, spikes, etc.. First, if at all possible, remove the CMOS battery for about 10 minutes to completely remove any old settings, re-insert after checking whether it is still good [generally 3+ volts] replace if needed [likely CR2032], and run the floppy flash disk. Remember to re-set any Bios settings if this appears to initially correct the issues. | **** ***** Are you referring to a Startup Diskette created by the OS in place? | The wording 'floppy flash disk' is not familiar to me. Yes, or one from bootdisks.com or some place. An autoflash disk has only the basics [command.com, io.sys, etc.] and you create an autoexec.bat to *auto run* the commandline for the flash program. Make sure the autoexec and config sys contain nothing else, e.g., no drivers, no directions, NOTHING except the command line necessary to flash the BIOS. As you're having difficulty with the keyboard, you will need to make sure the boot block is also refreshed, and is included with the BIOS flash. Check on the MB site for the flash tool, its command line needs, AND the proper flash bin [or whatever it uses]. Most have a support forum so if necessary, ask there if the particular flash contains the boot block and was not indicated on the info for the download. Again, make sure the autoexec then contains the command to refresh/overwrite the boot block as the defaults may NOT include this function, in addition to the standard updates that might be included within the BIOS update.. MAKE SURE that the computer you make this autoflash disk on is NOT configured to boot from the floppy to negate the potential of flashing the wrong computer with the wrong BIOS. After creating the autoflash disk, make sure the target computer IS configured to boot from the floppy and has been reset to defaults [which it will be if you removed the battery], then run the autoflash disk. I managed to follow instructions and set jumpers and cable connection as specified. The original HD became the Secondary Master. Most of my Data are there. There was no problems with all for long time. It was rather peculiar, however, that, whenever I inserted a Boot-disk to boot up from, the system would place me in Secondary Master. The Primary was nowhere to be found. There was a lengthy Post about this problem that involved many of your expert helpers, a year or two back. Gary, PCR, Harvat, but mainly Blanton, to name a few. Bill concluded that there was an overlay. The outcome was that, in order to boot up successfully, I had to hold the CTRL key during the booting cycle and select Boot from Floppy. That would put me in the Primary Master. *** MEB: 3. There MAY potentially be a hard drive conflict if the drives are not compatible. What are the two drive's makes and models? 2. The two drives on the second channel [CD and DVD] will be moved to drive F and G, but only IF the OS has not had its drives limited to only see drives up to drive F: limited by either the driver settings, system settings, or something like TweakUI which modified the registry or an inclusion in the system.ini or config.sys [lastdrive=*]. If this is the case, the lost/un-recognized drive will still cause errors even though it is not listed in Windows, it is still holding memory and CMOS/BIOS addressing which Windows may try to assign to other needs, or may cause conflicting system device issues.. 3. The Iomega drive adds potential issues to the mix if it has been set to always use some specific drive letter or IRQ, and/or if [as sometimes happens] it is incompatible with this older drive you are attempting to access. 4. A drive overlay may be part of the issue, but beyond that, we may also be running across a disk or disks which have had Drive Space or Double Space [or another drive compressor] used. 5. Perhaps its time to do - fdisk /status - [DOS prompt] on the disk(s) to see what that shows [using one of the working computers with the target drive properly configured as master or slave. BAP: **** You must be referring to the most recent Computer, Sony. Currently, the drives shown are: A:, C:, D:, E: CD_ROM, F: DVD and G: external ZIP Drive. All work well, except the DVD. It does not see DVD disks created and finalized by a an RCA DVD Player/Writer. It will see commercial DVD disks, but there appears to be a software glitch and won't play them. I am not too interested, at this point, to get involved with that problem. I can easily disconnect both, the Zip and the DVD disks, if that would make it easier to get the HDs from the failed Computer long enough until my data is recovered. More on this on the New Post titled 'Disk Recovery' (RE: Computer Failure ) which will concentrate on the Sony Computer. The Microtime is not functioning. The oldest, the Risys, might have a chance at accepting the HD(s) of the Microtime, but it does not give me a way to transfer the Data to other Media other than to Floppy Disks. Not sure I got the MXSD part correctly - MVXD? or some variation. And one about dangerously low resources. Tried a couple of SCANRE /RESTORE dates from prior to errors but still got the VPICD error on this last boot. W98 with 2 drives - First is just Windows and other programs - only 2 out of 6 gigs used Second is just files, fotos, vids - about 80 out of 95 gigs used. Second has been as high as 90 out of 95 without problems. Its usually in the 70-75 out of 90 range Have start up sequence set to display Normal, Safe Mode, Command Promp Only , etc menu with 30 second wait period. Ocasiionaly Normal doesn't load and it goes back to the menu with Safe Mode hilighted but can usually choose Normal again and complete the start-up. Nothing out of the ordinary with SpyBot, Ad-Aware, SpyWare Blaster or AVG scans. Nothing new in Add/Remove Programs list or ALT/CTRL/DEL list Thaught I'd post this first while this rig seems to be working OK and will start searching for solutions / references.     - Opening Opera web pages on my computer This is sort of a general question in Windows 98, so if this is the wrong group I'm sorry. A while ago I changed the default browser in my Win 98 computer from IE to Opera. At around the same time, I think, all the web pages saved on my computer changed their icon to the Opera icon from the IE icon. But now I see that when I click on one of these saved web pages, it doesn't open the document, it just activates the Opera application. If I hold shift and right click the html document's icon, and choose the Open With dialog box, and choose Opera, the same thing happens: the Opera application gets activated, but the document does not open. However, if I use the Open With dialog and choose IE or Firefox, the document opens normally in IE or Firefox. How can I simply open the web page in Opera? Alternatively, can I assign the html file type to open in IE or Firefox, even while leaving Opera as my default browser? Thanks. I have no Ad-aware SE, since December 31, 2007 you can not get definition updates and they tell you to get Ad-Aware 2007, but it seems that it does not support Windows 98, and I have Windows 98. Well what has happened was my computer was bought with windows xp
professional edition...my friend had my computer for a while and he screwed
my whole computer up by installing windows 98....So what I did was I tried to
go back to the windows xp pro edition but it did not work so I got a windows
xp home edition cd and installed it...now every time I start up my computer
it gives me an option to pick an operating system...windows xp home and
windows 98.....can some one please help me remove the windows 98 so I only
have one operating system.......

I already tried to format the drives but that doesnt work or im not doing it
correctly...the windows 98 seems to be in the C:drive and the xp seems to be
in the E:drive.......PLEASE HELP ME

Start, run===> msconfig

now go to the boot.ini tab and have it check all install paths

assuming win98 is gone, you can have it automatically remove that entry.

if win98 is still there, you can just delete the win98 option

WinXP prefers the NTFS hard drive format
