    - Problems activating monitor I have a monitor that used to be connected to a Windows 98 computer but recently has been used with a Windows Vista PC. I wanted to use it on the Win98 computer. However, everytime I boot, the monitor (an old Dell model m780) just sits there. The light beside its power button just slowly blinks, and the monitor never displays anything. When I switch it back to the Vista machine, it works fine. I tried powering everything down completely and removing power from everything for a few minutes, the reconnecting and booting. No change.     - Which firewall is best for Win98se Which firewall is best for Win98se. I asked this question of the firewall group and the security group and they pointed me to http://www.oldapps.com/. I did not see Kerio there as someone had suggested. I am not sure that it works with windows 98..They also told me to change my OS or get a new P.C. Does anyone have a recommendation?     - Restricred sites zone Use of the Restricted sites zone to protect against some websites that might damage the machine is fairly straight forward. However, what about files and folders that are under study and need to be in a restricted status?     - No Sound All of a Sudden This is for my aunt's computer. She out of nowhere has had her sound stop working in her machine. We have tried to disconnect and reconnect her speakers and you hear the crackle like there is sound, but nothing comes through that should. Of course it has been rebooted.     - IE Running well so far Thank you everyone! I really appreciate you sticking with me through this. Someone sent me the 3 DLL files I was missing. I installed them and was able to run the repair tool for IE6SP1. But that didn't help. I cleaned up my startup items with help from the group. I deleted a lot of unnecessary files. I download IE6sp1 zip from an e-mail and Gary walked my through the overinstall. I follow your advice on just about every post. Forgive me for not answering all but we spent about 24 hours just going through this. This is my third day and we are finally fixed. I think what did it is I removed my firewall.....'Trial of Transgressions'....I think that was the name. and I only use Avast resident protection (virus scanner).....not web protection or e-mail. Spybot tea timer removed, as Gary said. I ran scandisk. I did so many things it's hard to remember them all. When I start my computer any referral to ports, or joysticks, or the soundcard that I never had are gone. A few little quirks remain such as when I try to send this e-mail, I get an error message that the outbox can't be opened. So I will bypass the outbox from now on and send messages right away.     - EMM386: Unrecoverable privileged operation error #I7 Inside Win98SE's "pure DOS", when I run the DOS utility called "nvram120.exe", I see the subject line error on screen, and then I have to reboot. (I wanted to run this utility to see if I could see if a particular ISA card was installed correctly.) My mobo is Supermicro P6SBU revision 1.01, and I have flashed the BIOS to revision 3.1 (latest). The BIOS is called American Megatrends AMIBIOS setup, version 2.5 (c) 1997. When I was setting up the mobo (yesterday), I was encountering the following situations: 1) After installing my PCI cards (one at a time), I noticed that the BIOS appeared to be "forgetting" some of these cards in the POST device listing section. (In other words, some cards were being ommitted from the device listing on reboot.) 2) I also noticed that the "Checking NVRAM..." BIOS POST message kept saying "...Update OK!", even though between some reboots I had installed no additional hardware. 3) I also noticed that sometimes a PCI card would be listed as "Unknown Device", but if I moved the card to a different slot, it would then be correctly identified as (for instance) "Multimedia Device". 4) I have also encountered a BSOD when I installed a Diamond 3dfx card in one particular PCI slot, but then this BSOD would not occur if I moved the card to a different slot. (Also, this "bad slot" in question didn't seem to be a bad slot, as I tested it with another PCI card and it seemed ok.) To address some of the issues above, in Windows98SE I decided to Disable NVRAM/ESCD updates inside Plug and Play BIOS properties inside System/Device Manager. This appeared to fix the perpetual Checking NVRAM...Update OK! message on every reboot, and also appeared to fix one or two other resource conflict problems, but not the subject line problem. Regarding the BIOS (as described at the top of this message), I've never seen so many options you can adjust. I'm sure somewhere buried in these options is a "fix" for every problem I'm likely to stumble in to, but it's a technical minefield, because I've never used this mobo before. I tried loading in the BIOS Fail-Safe options to try and fix the subject line problem, but that didn't work. ATM, I have this hardware (which all seems to work) - 3 ISA slots = all completely empty now. There *was* a legacy SB16 which worked perfectly, but I removed it to test a legacy Gravis UltraSound which didn't work, and so it was removed as well. AGP slot = Matrox graphics card G450 PCI slot 1 (a shared slot with an ISA slot) = empty. (This seemed to be a bit of a problematic slot, so I've left it empty for now.) PCI slot 2 = 3dfx card. Was causing BSOD on install, but now seems fine. PCI slot 3 = Matrox graphics card G200 (for connecting to above 3dfx card). Works fine within a "Win98SE hardware configuration profile" so that I can toggle between this PCI graphics card, and the AGP graphics card listed above. PCI slot 4 = Creative PCIAudio ES1371 sound card. Works fine. Phew, that's it I think. Sorry for the long post! Thanks for any suggestions at all. Best regards, Robert.     - Backup software--like GHOST Good friend of mine got GHOST 9 and then found out it isn't for WIN 98. He got GHOST 2003 with it, that is for 98. But I recall seeing suggested here, other drive imaging and restoring packages that people find preferable to the Norton/ Symantec stuff. Could I have a few suggestions?     - Cannot shut down Windows 98 I have installed Windows 98SE on a Supermicro P6SBU motherboard. When I go to shut down windows, the screen displays the usual "It's now safe to turn off your computer" message (I can't remember the exact wording), but the PC's power remains on. If I then turn off the PSU power button, the PC momentarily makes a squeeking sound as if I have stepped on a small rodent, then all is quiet and the PC finally stops.     - can not get online I have a cable connection to my Dell XPS T450 desktop, windows 98se, 450 ram, Explorer 6.0. My virus scanner ran out of life while I was in the hospital and rehab., so I deleted it and got Avast. It worked fine for a couple of days. I think I pressed a button to have it scan while I was online. This stopped me from going online because every time I press Explorer it tries to connect to 66.135.200.145 (which is Avast) if I remember correctly. I tried to do a 'clean boot', but I remember that after I rebooted and pressed ctl alt del ...Explorer wad running, and in msconfig 'run=' and 'run=' were running (2 of them). I deleted Avast , but I guess I should have stopped the Explorer and The 2 run='s because, although I can get e-mail... I can not run Explorer (6). It just tries to connect to '66.135.200.145' (it shows up at the bottom). Can you help me get rid of the line in my registry that is causing this? Please.     - Please help - Windows 98 SE freeze! Hello, I am trying to fix my dad's computer for him. He is running Windows 98 SE on an IDE WD 80 GB HD. The computer will freeze up on him at all different times. It can be on startup, after running for a short while or after a long while, but does it everyday. Once it starts on that day it does it a lot. Here is what I did so far: Replaced hard drive- my dad's request. Replaced cable for hard drive Replaced cooling fan in power box, original fan made awful noise at startup. Added extra cooling fan; mid tower. After replacing the hard drive I ran the Manufacture's diagnostics software on the old drive, found no errors. I also did a scan disk and defrag with no trouble. So I don't believe the hard drive was the problem. The computer ran for me all night using the old drive with the case open and a fan blowing on it near by. So it could have been a heat problem. I would like to test the following before giving the computer back: RAM All hardware Look for hardware and program conflicts. Can anyone please suggest the best software for doing the above? Any other suggestions would be very much welcomed too. I doubt what I did so far fixed the computer. I don't have a lot of time to spend watching the computer run. He has been dealing with this freezing problem for a long time and has gotten very aggravated over it. He is now dealing with having cancer and going for chemo treatments so I would like to give the computer back to him fixed. Thank you in advance for any and all help!     - Digital Blue QX5 microscope I've just bought one of these, and when trying to load the CD (before connecting the microscope of course), it says I need Media Player 9. If I try to run the setup.exe that's in one of the directories on the disc, it says I need Me/2000/X?pVista. (Both where I got it - thinkgeek - and DigiBlue's own website say the microscope will work with '98.) It also doesn't come with a TWAIN driver, which is all I would really want - after all, it's just a camera as far as the PC is concerned (OK, with two extra lights, but I'd do without those at a pinch). Anyone here got one of these working under '98? FWIW, (a) the software and hardware is fine: I've had it working on an XP system; (b) I'm quite impressed with the build quality and so on - it's clearly meant to be seen as a toy, but I'd say is a good quality one. -- J.     - Windows Registry Checker (I think) causing continuous reboot On a friend's PC, while booting (98), one of the boxes that pops up is headed something like "Windows Registry Checker"; it says it has found a problem (I can't remember the exact words) and needs to do a restart, after which all will be OK; it has an OK button. If pressed, sure enough the PC restarts, but the box comes up again, and we can go round the loop as often as we like. If, however, I Ctrl-Alt-Delete, it appears in the list of running applications (usually as second line), and can be End Tasked; the "not responding" box comes up, so I End Task that, and thereafter, the PC seems to work perfectly happily!     - NetStumbler doesn't work with my Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter I've seen other posts by people who use the Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter with Netstumbler under Windows 98 SE, but I just can't get it to work for me. I currently connect to the internet with another USB adapter, (made in China, with no FCC ID or brand name), combined with a wok, (aka: WokTenna), tethered to the end of a 15' active USB cable, which has enough range to reach the house from our trailer about 300' away. I don't know what signal strength I get from this arrangement, but its slow. About comparable to 150% of what I used to get with dialup. Now, I'd like to be able to use an old laptop that also has Windows 98 SE together with the Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter to reach from the shop to the house where the cable connection and router are located, but it doesn't have quite as much range as my cheapo made in china adapter and the shop is just as far away from the house. Which basically means I'll be looking at building a better antenna using the WG111, but it sure would be nice to be able to use Netstumbler to help me with evaluating my results. The Netgear WG111V2 I have, has the FCC ID PY305400026 and I haven't been able to find pictures of the innards of this device to see where I might be able to connect an external antenna. (If anyone knows where I can find some, please feel free to post a reply.) Also, when I try to use Netstumbler, with either of the USB adapters I have, (I also tried some other WG111's that I have that use the same FCC IDD number, with the same results), Netstumber shows the adapters I have installed, (they are grayed out), but doesn't show any of them as being a "suitable device". I currently have drivers for the 1 made in china adapter and 3 of the WG111's installed and can unplug one and plug in another without any problems at all, (apart from the WG111's poorer range). I think Windows treats each of the WG111's as a separate entity because they use different MAC addresses, but I'm just guessing on that. Anyway, if anyone knows how to get Netstumbler to work on my computers with Win98SE, or has some info on pics of the internal antenna connections and maybe setting these up with a double biquad and maybe a 36" round satellite dish, (I just happen to have one kicking around), for some serious range, I'd appreciate the help.     - Uninstalling AVG Anti-Virus I have been a long term user of AVG Anti-Virus. However, with version 7.5 about to expire and 8.0 not available to W98, I decided to uninstall it and replace it with Avast. However, having run the uninstall, I was left with various folders (Program Files\Grisoft and Windows\All Users\Application Data\ Grisoft & AVG) which I have since moved off the machine. Understanding what these certificates are may help you protect your privacy. What are web site certificates? If an organization wants to have a secure web site that uses encryption, it needs to obtain a site, or host, certificate. Some steps you can take to help determine if a site uses encryption are to look for a closed padlock in the status bar at the bottom of your browser window and to look for "https:" rather than "http:" in the URL (see Protecting Your Privacy for more information). By making sure a web site encrypts your information and has a valid certificate, you can help protect yourself against attackers who create malicious sites to gather your information. You want to make sure you know where your information is going before you submit anything (see Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks for more information). If a web site has a valid certificate, it means that a certificate authority has taken steps to verify that the web address actually belongs to that organization. The level of trust you put in a certificate is connected to how much you trust the organization and the certificate authority. If the web address matches the address on the certificate, the certificate is signed by a trusted certificate authority, and the date is valid, you can be more confident that the site you want to visit is actually the site that you are visiting. However, unless you personally verify that certificate's unique fingerprint by calling the organization directly, there is no way to be absolutely sure. When you trust a certificate, you are essentially trusting the certificate authority to verify the organization's identity for you. However, it is important to realize that certificate authorities vary in how strict they are about validating all of the information in the requests and about making sure that their data is secure. By default, your browser contains a list of more than 100 trusted certificate authorities. That means that, by extension, you are trusting all of those certificate authorities to properly verify and validate the information. Before submitting any personal information, you may want to look at the certificate. How do you check a certificate? There are two ways to verify a web site's certificate in Internet Explorer or Mozilla. One option is to click on the padlock in the status bar of your browser window. However, your browser may not display the status bar by default. Also, attackers may be able to create malicious web sites that fake a padlock icon and display a false dialog window if you click that icon. A more secure way to find information about the certificate is to look for the certificate feature in the menu options. This information may be under the file properties or the security option within the page information. You will get a dialog box with information about the certificate, including the following: * who issued the certificate - You should make sure that the issuer is a legitimate, trusted certificate authority (you may see names like VeriSign, thawte, or Entrust). Do not trust the certificate if the name on the certificate does not match the name of the organization or person you expect. * expiration date - Most certificates are issued for one or two years. One exception is the certificate for the certificate authority itself, which, because of the amount of involvement necessary to distribute the information to all of the organizations who hold its certificates, may be ten years. Be wary of organizations with certificates that are valid for longer than two years or with certificates that have expired. When visiting a web site, you may have been presented with a dialog box that claims that there is an error with the site certificate. This may happen if the name the certificate is registered to does not match the site name, you have chosen not to trust the company who issued the certificate, or the certificate has expired. You will usually be presented with the option to examine the certificate, after which you can accept the certificate forever, accept it only for that particular visit, or choose not to accept it. The confusion is sometimes easy to resolve (perhaps the certificate was issued to a particular department within the organization rather than the name on file). I am with AOL and as I switch the PC if I click on explorer it goes
online BEFORE I connect manually on AOL. if I launch AOL it appears
to be off and I have to click connect to get AOL online.

Anyone could tell me what is going on? I do not like the idea of the
PC being online without my specific command.

While it is difficult to totally decipher what you're saying, try this: Open
Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu, then Internet Options, then the
Connection tab. It should say, "Never Dial a Connection". If it doesn't,
make it so. If it already says that, change it to some other option, click
Apply, then change it back and click OK.

Does that fix it?
