    - MSDOS Prompt problem Getting the dreaded "There is not enough memory to run this program" error message when I try to go to a DOS Prompt. I have a number of programs that only run in DOS.. I have MaxPhysPage=40000 and MaxFileCache=512000 All I did was move this win98se hard drive to a different computer. Previous comp had 2GB RAM. Removed the Enum key in registry before running on new computer. It started up fine and found all the new equipment okay.     - Printin Problems Previously in microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser, I wrote: I´m having printing problems specifically with IE6, so I decided to re-install it from scratch hoping to the problem solved. When I try to re-install IE, I get this message (my system is in Brazilian Portuguese so I´ll try to translate):The install process can´t download missing files using a not mapped UNC path with drive letters...     - Follow-up Here's prior post: Background: Promise 133 controller card, 2 WDC 80GB hard drives on removable trays. Promise bios shows identical drives. First master (alone), second master w/slave (DVD burner). Unable to access 2nd hard drive. Have tried: Simple boot floppy with ME dos on it, and same with 98SE dos on it at boot time. DriveImage 2002 with 98SE dos on it. XP w/SP2. WinME window environment. 98SE environment. Swapping drives in trays and using the unaccessible drive by itself. Swapping tray insertable locations. Jumpers adjusted accordingly. During floppy boot (both 98SE and ME), have observed the access LED on the tray indicating access to that hard drive. PC locks up everytime. Similar in XP boot, ME and 98SE when I open windows explorer to investigate My Computer. WDC diagnostic tool on bootable floppy similar results. ------------------------------------------------------ For those who want more precise info the one I'm having trouble with is IDE2 drive. I tried onboard ide with same result both attempting to boot with it, and booting from floppy and CD with WD diagnostics on it. Using a firewire enclosure with the problem drive, XP SP2 disk manager remains attempting to make contact with logical disk manager for 10 minutes. I stopped it at that point. Attempting to populate, error message said that the partition(s) may be of Windows 2000 nature. I don't own Windows 2000 and the drive has never seen such. -- Dave How about a tax to support any military conflict/police action over 3 months old?     - Renaming files. Say I have 10,000 files sitting in dedicated folders that accomodate 30 files, one for each day. The curly bit, is they have brevity in their current name and are only identified by their "modified Date" for example 2104.zip will be recognised 12 times one for each year since 1996 that is 2104.zip modified say 22nd april 1998 2104.zip modified say 24th april 2001 etc. How may I rename them, so that the zip will still activate yet I can fit them in 1 file (so that 2104.zip 1998 does not get overwritten by 2104.zip 2001) Tag: how to clean cashe Tag: 879813

    - Operating sys disk as an Ext drive? I am in a screaming hurry, I have an old W98 comp that gives me 3 "beeps" when I power on. then blank screen. I need to search the HDD for some old files I need to give my programmer. Can I simply hoik out the HDD, plug it into an ext HDD case and search for the files with my XP?     - screensaver password reverting to old password intermittently Any idea why my Win98SE screen saver password every few weeks reverts to the old password? The new one fails after it worked fine for days. The screen saver is native to the OS. The network password remains what it should be. I change the screensaver password and everything's okay until some weeks later. No one else uses the machine and it's not on the Internet. I use profiles as if for multiple users (I forgot what apparently worked better that way), but mine's been the only login all this time. I'm not going to a previous state with registry and startup files, and if Win is doing that without telling me it's not telling me, but whether the reversion only happened after a cold reset I don't recall. Nothing useful in <SYSTEM.INI>. Wasn't a problem before the last time I changed the screensaver password, which is also after the *.pwl file was last modified (I changed my login password then, too). I don't know where the screensaver password is stored, but "Underwater (high color).theme", Underwater.scr, & Underwater.dll were last modified in 1999, as are all of "C:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes\Underwater*.*", which should eliminate them; and it's not in the registry (unless encrypted). According to Find for the whole computer, the only files modified the same recent day I last changed my password were C:\WINDOWS\TEMP \~DFE6E9.TMP, ...\~DF5F4C.TMP, ...\~DF52A4.TMP, & ...\~DF60EA.TMP (each 3,584 bytes); they respectively contain the following plain English per Notepad: ~DFE6E9.TMP has "R o o t E n t r y", ~DF5F4C.TMP has "R o o t E n t r y", DF52A4.TMP has "R o o t E n t r y", & ~DF60EA.TMP has "R o o t E n t r y", "SCANDSKW", "SETUP", "W8=C7" (unknown if relevant to platform being Win98SE), "SETUP", "SETUP", "SETUP", "SETUP1", "SOFFICE", "SOUNDMAN" (I don't know what I have in the bought-as-barebones machine that's about Soundman or in the homebuilt that used to house the HDD w/ same OS), "SPOOL32", "ST6UNST", "START", "STPSUP", "SUCATREG", "SYSINFO ?", "SYSMON", & "SYSTRAY". As an experiment, I changed the password recently to the normal password twice via each of two methods (via Display and Passwords applets), i.e., 4 times total. Every time it said it had successfully been changed, which means it can't tell the difference if there's no real change. I tested the password correction; it works now. One hunch: The old password was 8 characters long, all different. The new password is the same minus the rightmost character. (I know that kind of change is weak security, but that's a different subject. I should tighten that after I solve this problem.) Could the similarity mean Win is sometimes remembering the old one?     - cannot copy to a cd Just got my computer started back up again after some ails (norton). I wanted to copy some files from MRY DOCUMENTS (photos) to a CD. Put in a blank CD. Readied it up. Selected SEND TO. And get this response: ERROR COPYING FILE Cannot create or replace (name of file). Access is denied.     - Need Advice Well, it looks like I've finally reached the end-of-life with my P11, 300 MHz Win98se machine. My master hard drive went belly-up but I have managed to limp along by replacing it with my properly re- jumpered slave drive. Fortunately it was a clone of the master so it was able to boot-up okay. The dilemma: What to replace my computer it with. I have a good friend who is a well respected local Computer (since 1994) technician who strongly recommends Dell, ONLY because they are the only ones who still sell XP machines. His strong opinion is that Vista is very buggy and doesn't look like it is going to be cleaned up in the near future. Also he says the unique "features" of Vista are mostly troublesome eye candy and messy security items, and that XP will survive for at least the next 5+ years. My question: Should I limit my choices to Dell because of the XP/Vista consideration or should I bite the bullet and go for the best machine for my kilobuck without regard for the operating system.     - Changing motherboard Win98SE Hi All, I managed to turn up a used computer for $20 which contained a suitable 800MHz Celeron board, which I could use to replace my dud motherboard. I've never replaced a motherboard before, so just doing it was of interest to me. I wanted to boot up the original hard drive with all applications installed and get it to work with the the new motherboard. I put an old installation hard drive into the $20 computer so I could experiment - I got some good stuff off the internet of "how-to" do it. I had Acronis True Image at the ready too, with existing backups of the system. I did alright on the motherboard, graphics, in the transfer to the new motherboard etc, but the audio just plain refused to work. I eventually made the drive un-bootable trying to fix this audio sound card problem. I had to True Image recover the drive. The method I finally found worked best was to: (1) Do a repair-install of Win98SE. This got most of the motherboard right including rather crucially the CDROM. Probably the best first step with any OS if you can do this. (2) Install the motherboard chipset drivers and get them right. (3) Install the Graphics Driver. (4) Un-install any audio sound card stuff in Add/Remove Programs. (5) Go into Safe mode and delete anything to do with the old sound card in Device Manager. (6) Install the sound card drivers.     - Running program from flash drive means lock.exe doesn't work I have an Adata USB flashdrive running a p2p program that also stores downloaded files on it. I left it running for a few hours. When I came back, it was no longer running the program. All the data is secure so I have to run lock.exe, together with a password to access it. But when i run lock.exe from the installation disk, it says "No Flash device attached!". When i run lock.exe fro the flash device, it says "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down". So now I can't even access the program and data that was in the security area. Does anyone have an idea as to what has happened because it looks as if I'll have to reformat it, which seems pointless if the same problem is going to occur. Regards, Larry.     - Black screen (no logo) before desktop shows How can I display the Windows 98 logo (with the changing color bar at the bottom) before the desktop loads, instead of just see a black screen for 1 minute? When the machine starts, the Windows logo displays, then the screen goes black for about one minute, then the desktop loads. The machine is running fine. msdos.sys does have the line "Logo=1" I tried just putting 'logo.sys' in the C: directory. No joy.     - Win 98SE and 1 gig of memory Does Windows 98 se have a problem with a 1 gig stick of memory? I have two PCs and both are dual boot with 98 and XP. Both motherboards support up two two 1 gig sticks of memory. When I tried to use one niether would boot up in 98, With 1.5 gig of memory it says there is insufficient memory to start windows. The memory is compatible with the boards according to the web sites. Even XP, which did boot up, was noticably slower with 1.5 gig of memory than with 768 meg. Why would this be?     - boot disk Hello again....... I wrote on Sunday with regards to being unable to get my computer started up. I can't get past the DELL LOGO screen and then it goes to a black screen with the cursor blinking on the left top. I tried the F8, the control key, F5 key............... so far, NIX! And so someone asked if I had a boot disk.     - Inbox contents simply vanished In OE 6, Windows 98, the entire contents of the Inbox just vanished after restarting computer. There were about 4 weeks of e-mail in there. Other folders do not seem to be affected. I looked in the Outlook Express folder on my hard drive, and the Inbox file at this address: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{9226D728-E116-11DA-8D61-00045A5FABE0}\Microsoft\Outlook Express was down to something like 130 KB, containing just a lot of unreadable code. I normally move Inbox contents to other folders regularly to keep Inbox from getting too large. I've never seen anything like this. The contents of a huge file simply vanishing.     - computer won't start up Hello. Yesterday I started up my computer quite normally. When I opened OE it froze. This happened a number of times and so I restarted in SAFE MODE. From there I did a number of things like VIRUS CHECK, SPYBOT and did a delete and clean up of files. Scan disk, defrag, etc. Later I went into normal mode and tried again.......another freeze up. Did a restart and then disabled NORTON Internet Security and ANTIVIRUS. Then OE opened fine and I was able to do a little more work online. Shut down normally. Today I pushed the start button......did NOT notice any peculiar sounds or something out of the ordinary....the screen went just past the DELL COMPUTER SCREEN and then to a cursor on the top left, it made its usual starting noise and it stops there.     - 98SE Runs in MSDOS Compatibility Mode I have just upgraded my system with a new motherboard (Biostar NF4 Ultra A9A) that has an NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra Chipset.     - scanreg I recently discovered that my daily scanreg was not occurring. When I opened in MSDOS mode and did a scanreg /restore I found that the five backups were several weeks old. I made a registry change by adding /autorun after scanreg.exe and moving the scanreg.exe file to C:\Windows and got it to work again but now I have two new problems: (1) Every time I re-boot, scanreg runs so that if I re-boot 5 or more times in one 24 hour period, I have 5 identical files. (2) Every time I boot, during the boot sequence, a black box MSDOS window appears showing that scanreg and scanregW have been initiated. This box NEVER appeared before I made the changes above. While scanreg is now working, I have somehow screwed up the sequence so that the above problems have occurred. My questions: Where should the scanreg.exe file reside. Is /autorun after the scanreg entry in the registry appropriate/necessary. It wasn't there before. There are a few ways to clean the cache/temporary files.

One is manually through various ways including:
1. In IE go to Tools/Internet Options > Clear History and > Delete Cookies,
then set Advanced > *check* Empty Temporary Internet Files When Closed.
Also SET the days to keep History to a low setting {this removes files
according to date of last access] such as After 2 Days.

2. Either manually, or via a batch or script, delete the temporary folders
and files in the Temporary Files folders {c:\windows\Temporary Internet
Files and/or whatever you have as the temporary store for files {e.g.,
c:\temp] in your autoexec.bat [c:\autoexec.bat *see* Path and Temp
{Temp=c:\temp} <> or Tmp statements.

3. Obtain one of the third party {such as Windows Washer - WebRoot
Software - http://www.webroot.com/} which do these things automatically.
