    - NetStumbler doesn't work with my Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter I've seen other posts by people who use the Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter with Netstumbler under Windows 98 SE, but I just can't get it to work for me. I currently connect to the internet with another USB adapter, (made in China, with no FCC ID or brand name), combined with a wok, (aka: WokTenna), tethered to the end of a 15' active USB cable, which has enough range to reach the house from our trailer about 300' away. I don't know what signal strength I get from this arrangement, but its slow. About comparable to 150% of what I used to get with dialup. Now, I'd like to be able to use an old laptop that also has Windows 98 SE together with the Netgear WG111V2 USB adapter to reach from the shop to the house where the cable connection and router are located, but it doesn't have quite as much range as my cheapo made in china adapter and the shop is just as far away from the house. Which basically means I'll be looking at building a better antenna using the WG111, but it sure would be nice to be able to use Netstumbler to help me with evaluating my results. The Netgear WG111V2 I have, has the FCC ID PY305400026 and I haven't been able to find pictures of the innards of this device to see where I might be able to connect an external antenna. (If anyone knows where I can find some, please feel free to post a reply.) Also, when I try to use Netstumbler, with either of the USB adapters I have, (I also tried some other WG111's that I have that use the same FCC IDD number, with the same results), Netstumber shows the adapters I have installed, (they are grayed out), but doesn't show any of them as being a "suitable device". I currently have drivers for the 1 made in china adapter and 3 of the WG111's installed and can unplug one and plug in another without any problems at all, (apart from the WG111's poorer range). I think Windows treats each of the WG111's as a separate entity because they use different MAC addresses, but I'm just guessing on that. Anyway, if anyone knows how to get Netstumbler to work on my computers with Win98SE, or has some info on pics of the internal antenna connections and maybe setting these up with a double biquad and maybe a 36" round satellite dish, (I just happen to have one kicking around), for some serious range, I'd appreciate the help.     - Uninstalling AVG Anti-Virus I have been a long term user of AVG Anti-Virus. However, with version 7.5 about to expire and 8.0 not available to W98, I decided to uninstall it and replace it with Avast. However, having run the uninstall, I was left with various folders (Program Files\Grisoft and Windows\All Users\Application Data\ Grisoft & AVG) which I have since moved off the machine. Now, during the boot up process, I get the message that the registry or System.ini file refers to device files which no longer exist. These are:- C:\PROGRA'1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE'1\AVG7CORE.VXD C:\PROGRA'1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE'1\AVG7RS.VXD C:\PROGRA'1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE'1\AVG7DI.VXD I cannot see any reference to these in the system.ini file, so I would be very grateful for any help in sorting this out. Understanding what these certificates are may help you protect your privacy. What are web site certificates? If an organization wants to have a secure web site that uses encryption, it needs to obtain a site, or host, certificate. Some steps you can take to help determine if a site uses encryption are to look for a closed padlock in the status bar at the bottom of your browser window and to look for "https:" rather than "http:" in the URL (see Protecting Your Privacy for more information). By making sure a web site encrypts your information and has a valid certificate, you can help protect yourself against attackers who create malicious sites to gather your information. You want to make sure you know where your information is going before you submit anything (see Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks for more information). If a web site has a valid certificate, it means that a certificate authority has taken steps to verify that the web address actually belongs to that organization. When you type a URL or follow a link to a secure web site, your browser will check the certificate for the following characteristics: 1. the web site address matches the address on the certificate 2. the certificate is signed by a certificate authority that the browser recognizes as a "trusted" authority Can you trust a certificate? The level of trust you put in a certificate is connected to how much you trust the organization and the certificate authority. If the web address matches the address on the certificate, the certificate is signed by a trusted certificate authority, and the date is valid, you can be more confident that the site you want to visit is actually the site that you are visiting. However, unless you personally verify that certificate's unique fingerprint by calling the organization directly, there is no way to be absolutely sure. When you trust a certificate, you are essentially trusting the certificate authority to verify the organization's identity for you. However, it is important to realize that certificate authorities vary in how strict they are about validating all of the information in the requests and about making sure that their data is secure. By default, your browser contains a list of more than 100 trusted certificate authorities. That means that, by extension, you are trusting all of those certificate authorities to properly verify and validate the information. Before submitting any personal information, you may want to look at the certificate. How do you check a certificate? There are two ways to verify a web site's certificate in Internet Explorer or Mozilla. One option is to click on the padlock in the status bar of your browser window. However, your browser may not display the status bar by default. Also, attackers may be able to create malicious web sites that fake a padlock icon and display a false dialog window if you click that icon. A more secure way to find information about the certificate is to look for the certificate feature in the menu options. This information may be under the file properties or the security option within the page information. You will get a dialog box with information about the certificate, including the following: * who issued the certificate - You should make sure that the issuer is a legitimate, trusted certificate authority (you may see names like VeriSign, thawte, or Entrust). Some organizations also have their own certificate authorities that they use to issue certificates to internal sites such as intranets. * who the certificate is issued to - The certificate should be issued to the organization who owns the web site. Do not trust the certificate if the name on the certificate does not match the name of the organization or person you expect. * expiration date - Most certificates are issued for one or two years. One exception is the certificate for the certificate authority itself, which, because of the amount of involvement necessary to distribute the information to all of the organizations who hold its certificates, may be ten years. Be wary of organizations with certificates that are valid for longer than two years or with certificates that have expired. When visiting a web site, you may have been presented with a dialog box that claims that there is an error with the site certificate. This may happen if the name the certificate is registered to does not match the site name, you have chosen not to trust the company who issued the certificate, or the certificate has expired. You will usually be presented with the option to examine the certificate, after which you can accept the certificate forever, accept it only for that particular visit, or choose not to accept it. The confusion is sometimes easy to resolve (perhaps the certificate was issued to a particular department within the organization rather than the name on file). If you are unsure whether the certificate is valid or question the security of the site, do not submit personal information.     - Gateway PC fires up and then doesn't fire up I got this PC to finally get going when I plugged everything back in. I didn't even use the power button, I just plugged the power cord back into the back panel and whammo! It started, but nothing came up on the monitor screen and the power supply fan didn't turn, and yes I did plug the little 3 pin connector back up to the mobo. I bet if I change the tower case everything will be ok. Ok, yes it is me. And if you don't want to answer anymore questions, then let it be. There are enough professional people here that can answer questions and not make a big deal about it. Another thing is I tried to post another thread and I don't see it. I just bought a video card from Dell. It's a GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card. I bought it when I was upset and now I think I need a new motherboard to use it.     - New Antivirus Program I currently dual-boot with 98 Second Edition and Windows XP Professional. I use AVG and I have discovered that AVG 8 will not support Windows 98 SE and support for AVG 7.5 is currently slated to end at the end of May.     - win98 se startup issues Every time I try to boot my computer, I get the message that it's "preparing to run windows for the first time". I go through that process and let it detect devices and install drivers, but when I restart I get the same message again and must repeat the detection process. I remember from a while back that setup makes some changes to some boot files to reflect that it is first boot, but I can't recall which files. Can anyone help with this issue?     - recycle bin: delete confirmation dialog hi, i want to set up my recycle bin to just delete a file, without storing it. i just want to select any file, choose delete from the context menu and the file just disappear for good. i know that selecting properties and checking the box for 'remove files immediately', removes the files permanently, but i do not want the system to ask me if i am sure or not, with the confirmation dialog. on this properties applet, the checkbox for "display delete confirmation dialog box" is already unchecked and greyed out, after ive also checked the remove files immediately box. how do i make it so the system doesnt ask me if i am sure? ive already told it here, on this options applet, to not ask me, so why is it still asking me anyway? on this properties page, i have the radio bullet selecting to use one setting for all drives. below that, the box for 'display delete confirmation box' is unchecked, then, i have the checkbox ticked for 'do not move files to recycle bin. remove files immediately when deleted.' once that box is checked, the area below for displaying the confirmation, greys out, and the box for that remains unchecked. so, all that i have selected here, should really not be displaying any confirmation. but it still does. why??     - Reformatting Hard Drive Win98SE I recently acquired a Compaq presario 1255 laptop that is nine years old with Windows 98SE OS. I was told that the hard drive was cleaned. However, I find leftovers of old un-installed programs such as McAfee from 2003. The problem is that about every third boot up, I get an error message that a McAffee file no longer exists. I found a file labeled exactly as the error message in configsys/startup. I obviously unchecked it in confifsys/startup, but still get the same error message on startup. I have all the original RESTORE disks that accompanied the purchase of the laptop. Would I be better to reformat the hard drive with the FULL FACTORY RESTORE FROM CD or the try and work around these leftovers. I only intend on using this computer for printing database invoices that I will create in the Works program that came on it--that is it. It will never be used for internet, etc. Will I need updates for Win98 (knowing they are now unavailable) if I do a full restore, even though I am only using minimal applications? In some case, entire thread segments are duplicated. My inclination is to reset the NG. But I must go now-- no time to even investigate! The posts are identical, but their Properties are different.     - PC not firing up I'm thinking now, to buy a new mobo/CPU combo from newegg.com. I think I can get one for under 60 bucks. It looks like I might have messed up this old mobo with ESD. I do have the wrist strap to prevent ESD, but usually I just touch the power supply every so often when I'm working on a PC. This time I didn't though. Why not get a new mobo/CPU combo. The old mobo and CPU are a Pentium III and mobo is -- an Intel, because I can see Intel written all over the little RAM sticks on the board. There is one RAM patch that says SMSC American Megatrends. Like I said all the other RAM patches say Intel. Under the SMSC are numbers and letters. In this order: 1st SMSC, then under that is LPC47M102, then under that is A0008-B7462, then under that is 8H18957-7. The part number on the the board is E139761.     - Starting your PC without the front panel power button I'd like to know how to start up my PC without the front panel power button assembly because my PC won't start or fire up. Nothing happens when I hit the power button. The power supply works, so I figure it might be the power button assembly that's the problem. I'm using a process of elimination to do this and the power button assembly is next on the process of elimination. So basically every time you decide to add or remove software or upgrade hardware, those relevant entries in the registry will change.This causes it to become "clogged up" and will eventually lead to problems with functionality of programs and general performances. It would be great if computers would constantly function as if they were new, but unfortunately as time passes the average pc user will install and remove various software from their pc causing problems. We all know what a pain it can be when a computer starts acting sluggish and won't respond to certain actions we give and this can be sorted out by using registry cleaners. There are quite a few of these software programs available for download on the internet of which some will perform better than others. Started to do the traditional 'cleanup' of an install and found the 'My Bluetooth Places' icon on the desktop will not allow me to delete it. Tweakui does not show it on the 'desktop' tab for icons. If I attempt to open (right click/Open) or double click, nothing happens. However, if I right click/explore, it operates normally and the explore window opens displaying the contents. I have win98 and xp,, win98 being on the c: drive, and xp on the d drive. I switched to xp today after a reboot, all seemed okay as it went through the normal motions, then it produced a screen as if xp had been installed for the first time;; then just ceased up. I havent used xp a great deal, and it doesnt have access to the internet. When I open win' explorer, (via booting back to win98) it shows my D: drive with all of the things that are loaded into xp, including all new folders and stuff that I created last time I was there. (oh, xp was loaded on using fat32, and has been that way for over a year without a problem.) So, one of my main concerns right now is the fact that xp is the boot manager for the dual-boot, and I sure as heck dont want to lose the ability to boot into win98. I have heard that there is a repair tool on my xp disc, and was wondering whether I should try to use that? I also dont have my product key anymore. I downloaded 'magicjellybean' product key finder, and saved it to a file in win98, then from there created a folder on xp (d: drive) and copied it into there,, but realised that I was still in a 98 environment and hence couldnt fire it up to find xp's product number..... still, I dont even know if I need that at this stage because I have the original disc anyway. Can anyone advise on what I should do, or better still, what any of you here would do in the same situation? Basically, I havent really tried anything yet, thought I would come here first. Have run all the obvious antivirus and malaware programs, comes up clean for win98. Thank you for input.     - Did I have a virus? Windows 98SE PC was working fine. I had been downloading some files, e.g. RealPlayer. No apparent problems. Powered down. Later on, started it up again. There was some kind of error message at the DOS level where it said Abort, Retry, Fail. I said Abort. Then: Invalid System Disk etc etc. Drive C buggered. However, I booted up to DOS from a floppy and most (95%) of the folders and files on C appeared intact. But here's the important thing, certain key parts of the OS were gone! The VMM32 folder in Windows\System no longer existed, neither IOSUBSYS. Also, no MSDOS.SYS in drive C. But I had a very recent TrueImage image, so I just restored it. Since then I have been running virus checkers like there's no tomorrow on both PCs, but all come up clean. What could totally trash those folders, yet leave most of the hard drive files intact? To improve the sluggishness of WinXP I bought an AMD Athlon dual core machine with 2 Gb RAM and 512 Mb video and wanted to install a 98SE/XP dual boot system. 1th disappointment: swapping drives C and D isn't offered by the Award BIOS anymore, so I'll need a boot manager (I thought). But soon a new obstacle appeared: with 2048 Mb of RAM, the 98SE installer pertains there isn't enough memory to properly setup the O/S and suggests that I first remove the resident software to free some space!     - Printing from messages received here I was having problems printing because the print was too small. Well, I just figured out how to get big prints from these messages that we are receiving here. Use selection , then right click on the selected area, choose print preview, then choose, as selected on screen. Then on page fit choose whatever you think is right, in my case I the biggest I could fit was 125% on one page. So, now I figured out how to get prints that are big enough that you don't have to use a magnify glass on it to read it. See, I find out something that will help out someone and I print it out for them. No probs. Maybe I'll get good luck on Monday playing the stock market. I'm a day trader so that's why I can be upset easier than most. Most day traders on the stock exchange need a vacation or to stop trading for a few days. Thank god for week-ends. Do you have Norton Internet Security? Try turning off Ad-Blocking, or better
yet, get rid of Norton and use something more Windows friendly, like Avast!

Otherwise, have you tried emptying the cache? You don't say what browser
you're using, but if it's Internet Explorer, you go to Tools>Internet
Options>Delete Files button.
