Question about Mouse settings
My current Computer is a Sony VAIO - Pentium 4 - CPU 1300M.
From the settings options, the mouse appears to be set at double click, but
whenever I attempt at highlighting/selecting a group of objects (jpeg, .txt
or whatever files) and single click on the first of a series, it immediately
wants to work with the first object and gives me no time to highlight any
other or range of others. I tried to slow down the click speed but it does
not seem to make a difference.
It does appear that every thing is executed by a single click, but I do not
see other options about the mouse movement.
Am I missing something? Tag: Today is your day, your mountain is waiting, so get on your way. Tag: 878522
Bluetooth software?
Been looking for BT software for 98se but have not found anything. Would
like to get a Logitech V470 BT mouse to work with it.
Logitech's installation CD only works with Xp & Vista.
Anyone know where I can D/L some BT software for 98 which will recognize
the mouse?

Writing An Online Dating Service Profile? 3 Mistakes You Must
Well, after 4 years of reading far in excess of 10,000 profiles of men
and women searching for a partner through online dating services, I've
laughed at my fair share of poorly written introductions...
Of those 10,000 online dating service profiles, no more than a dozen
captured our attention enough to make the first move. I'm sure that
you wish to get lots of reactions to your online dating service
advertisement, otherwise why would you bother joining a site, and
paying a fee to meet new people?
If that is the case, then make sure you avoid the following 3 mistakes
at all costs:
1. "I May Be the one you're Seeking For"
This may be the case. However, by employing this combination of words
anywhere for your online dating service profile, you aren't telling
me, or your potential suitor, anything new...
What this line does say to someone checking you out is that the online
dating service profiler didn't do a lot of thinking about how they
wanted to present themselves. Tell people what gets your eyes
twinkling or even what REALLY gets you up in the morning - and don't
say it's your alarm clock, either. Now is the time to let your
passions really shine through...
2. "I'm the one Your Mother Warned You About"
This is, from my research in any case, virtually the most overused
phrase in an opening line for online dating service profiles. True,
it's the generic option of some of the larger sites (such as Lavalife
or even True) - if your profile is awaiting approval, this tag line
will show up while waiting for the a-okay...
To avoid this, come up with something a bit more unique and original.
But what if

Computer Failure
For some time I have been using a Machine that has suddenly started having
problems and is, currently, not functioning. It had a primary and a secondary
Hard Disks with a lot of Data that I would like to retrieve from them. The
prinmary has the Operating System (W98SE), along with other good stored Data.
The Secondary Disk has a lot of saved information and many family photos.
Is there an easy way for me to install these disks on another machine and
get the info that I would like to save?
Yes, I will back all up on CD's, once the job is done!

A camera or an USB stick can act as an USB mass storage device.
Is it possible to run a driver or program on a win98 machine so that

So that for example a XP machine sees the hard disk of the win98

network card install and vip.386
Tried to install a network card with no success. Seems similar to the

the installation chokes right after the vip.386 popup is clicked on
and then after the reboot the device manager says the network card has
been disabled because it caused a problem at startup. Network card
hardware is known good. I don't know if the vip.386 file is relevant
to this problem or not. Any ideas? Thanks.

Very OT, size of PDF files.
Don't know where else to discuss this, because afaik there id no adobe
or pdf newsgroup.
I bought something that came with a CD and on it was the owners
manual, which was a 9 meg pdf file.
Looking for later software, I went to their website and downloaded the
manual, which was 2 megs.
Strangely, they look identical, each 68 pages, and when I alt-tab from
one to the other in Acrobat, I can't see any difference in quality.
Anyone have experience with this.

FAT32 size issues, _just_ about size?
Is the issue with FAT32 and Win9x, if I've understood the problem
correctly, simply about the size of one directory, or is it also an
issue of the size of the entire hdd. My reason for concern is, other
hardware issues aside first, could we run Win9x on a large 200gig

How to read harddrive that was once too big for mobo.
How to read harddrive that was once too big for mobo?
I have a hard drive that was too big for the mobo that I first used it
on. I think it is 800 Meg (but I'll check again if it matters) and
when I bought it, I think Western Digital had a remapping program that
allowed the drive to pretent to the mobo that its geometry was
different from reality.
I tried connecting it as a slave, setting the jumpers correctly, and
iirc, it wasn't recognized at all. I bought an enclosure and hooked
it up to the USB port, and although the computer seees the enclosure
and installs or loads the HDUSB stuff, the drive never shows up on any
drive list.
Conecting it as a master drive has its own problems, which see below,
and furthermore, I have another drive from the same persion which was
never a master drive and doesn't have an OS on it. So I can't connect
it as the master drive. Wot should I do?
I have a Promise card that would have iiuc enabled me to run these
drives without the remapping software that it uses, but wouldn't the
remapping software still run since it is there, regardless of whether
it is plugged into the new, powerful mobo, or the Promise card?
When I was using this drive as my master drive, when the computer
booted up, just after the very beginning of start-up, a white box with
blue text, or something, displayed, giving notice that this software
was running.
Now I have a newer mobo and much bigger hd's, but I want to get some
data off of this HD. I tried last October, and iirc I couldn't use it
as a slave drive. So I used it as the master and made my primary a
slave. It gave all kinds of warnings at the start that convinced me
it wouldn't start, but somehow it did, and I got the data I needed
then. However after I shut down, and removed the drive, and reset my
real drive as Single Drive, it wouldn't start. (I was leaving on a
long business trip the next day and had a friend coming in to download
my email, so I was really bothered. ) I controlled my panic and booted
from a floppy, and sys'ed the HD and bingo, it worked again.
How did the old HD un-sys or de-sys or re-sys the newer HD while it
was temporarily a slave? How can I avoid this from happening
altogether.
Thanks a lot.

RE: SPYWARE (FREE DOWNLOAD)
Margie,
On 13 Feb 08, I downloaded SpyBot 1.5.1.12 with latest detection update
2/13/2008 to my Windows 98 SE and it seems to work fine. The day before I
had downloaded update 2/06/2008, ran it and removed a lot of "stuff" I
didn't want. This seems to be their web site:
http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html . My son put SpyBot on my computer a
few years ago and I just 'update' it without plugging in their web site to
get the updates; however, I just went to their web site to get the info for
you. Here is the web site of a columnist (Betty Champagne) who offers free
advice and refers us to many 'free" programs http://www.bitsnpcs.info .
Many of her articles are archived on the site.
Good luck!

Folder Options!!!
Hello, is there anybody out there!!! win98se OS
I have a dilemma. I was setting up separate Profiles for the different Users
in Passwords on this machine along with ICS in a study of NAT capabilities
of a SS4100 modem. *_ I noticed that some of the Desktop folders for another
user that were not the correct folder type as oem boot like on My Desktop,
in particular the systems folders. So I went into Folder Options and clicked
reset all folders...*_ This "little" move erased all the very important
program files that were in a folder(s) or shortcut folder(s) that I had on
My Desktop and all the other desktops. This is a disaster. Luckily, I can
find some of these programs with Find File and Folders but the path is the
same as the shortcut folder or the my New folders i.e. folders that I
created that are now "empty". Also, My Docs seem unaffected by the reset.
WTF did I do to deserve this bug? Any thoughts here would be helpful.

* Microsoft Office
* Microsoft Visual Basic
* Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS)
Overview
Microsoft has released updates that address critical vulnerabilities
in Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, Visual Basic and
Internet Information Services (IIS). Exploitation of these
vulnerabilities could allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to
execute arbitrary code, gain elevated privileges, or crash a
vulnerable system.
I. Description
Microsoft has released updates to address vulnerabilities that affect
Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, Visual Basic and
Internet Information Services (IIS) as part of the Microsoft Security
Bulletin Summary for February 2008. The most severe vulnerabilities
could allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary
code. For more information, see the US-CERT Vulnerability Notes
Database.
II. Impact
A remote, unauthenticated attacker could execute arbitrary code, gain
elevated privileges, or cause a denial of service.
III. Solution
Apply updates from Microsoft
Microsoft has provided updates for these vulnerabilities in the
February 2008 security bulletins. The security bulletins describe any
known issues related to the updates. Administrators are encouraged to
note these issues and test for any potentially adverse effects.
Administrators should consider using an automated update distribution

Adobe Reader and Acrobat Vulnerabilities
Original release date: February 12, 2008
Last revised: --
Source: US-CERT
Systems Affected
* Adobe Reader version 8.1.1 and earlier
* Adobe Acrobat Professional, 3D, and Standard versions 8.1.1 and
earlier
Overview
Adobe has released Security advisory APSA08-01 to address multiple
vulnerabilities affecting Adobe Reader and Acrobat. The most severe of
these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute
arbitrary code.
I. Description
Adobe Security advisory APSA08-01 addresses a number of
vulnerabilities affecting the Adobe Acrobat family of products,
including Adobe Reader. Acrobat versions 8.1.1 and earlier are
affected. Further details are available in the US-CERT Vulnerability
Notes Database.
An attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing a user
to load a specially crafted Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file.
Acrobat integrates with popular web browsers, and visiting a web site
is usually sufficient to cause Acrobat to load PDF content.
At least one of these vulnerabilities is being actively exploited. The
SANS Internet Storm Center Handler's Diary contains more information.
II. Impact
The impacts of these vulnerabilities vary. The most severe of these
vulnerabilities allows a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code.
III. Solution
Upgrade
Upgrade Adobe Reader or Acrobat to version 8.1.2 according to the
information in Adobe Security advisory APSA08-01.
Disable web browser display for PDF documents
Preventing PDF documents from opening inside a web browser may
mitigate this vulnerability. Applying the following workaround in
conjunction with upgrading may prevent similar vulnerabilities from
being automatically exploited.
To prevent PDF documents from automatically being opened in a web
browser with Acrobat or Reader:
1. Open Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
2. Open the Edit menu.
3. Choose the Preferences option.
4. Choose the Internet section.
5. De-select the "Display PDF in browser" check box.
Disable automatic opening of PDF documents in Microsoft Internet Explorer
To disable automatic opening of PDF files in Microsoft Internet
Explorer (IE), a second step is required. To configure IE to prompt
before opening a PDF file, disable the "Display PDF in browser"
feature (as described above) and then make the following changes to
the Windows registry:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AcroExch.Document.7]
"EditFlags"=hex:00,00,00,00
Disable JavaScript in Adobe Reader and Acrobat
Disabling JavaScript in Adobe Reader and Acrobat may prevent this
vulnerability from being exploited. In Acrobat Reader, JavaScript can
be disabled in the General preferences dialog (Edit --> Preferences
--> JavaScript, de-select Enable Acrobat JavaScript).

Windows98SE/OE6
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion
Cable does not come this far out in the suburbs where I live; so, I only
have dial-up connection to the internet. I recently downloaded and
installed all the Windows 98 SE critical updates. Prior to that when I was
already online in Internet Explorer or Outlook Express, in Outlook Express
I could select Send/Recv and send/check my mail while
already online. Now when I'm already online I select Send/Recv and try to
check mail or send mail my modem connection is disconnected and I have to
dial-up again. I can then send/check mail; however, If I click to check
mail again, it disconnects me and I have to go through the connect/dial up
process again. Is there an update I need to uninstall or settings I need to
change? Thanks!

Video Card for an older Dell - Should I install a new one?
Hi,
My video card was working great until a crash required my reloading Windows
98. From then on I never was able to make it work correctly, despite lots of
help here and originally from Dell before the Windows 98 support went off.
(The sound is not working, either, but it is the picture quality I need
fixed) Since this is an old obsession, I have to revisit the situation.
I would like to know if starting over by replacing the video card for a new
one with its new software would likely solve my problem. I feel there is no
sense in going through all the steps to repair again and again, as I did
before. Also, are video cards specific to the computer and operating system,
as I think they are?
My reason to do this is that I have many 3 1/2 discs with family photos and
they are all compacted using a Windows 98 DOS program that does not work on
Windows XP, my current laptop OS. The photographs come up so bad on the
screen that I cannot even see if they are worthwhile to save. I know how to
do the save and use them on the laptop, although it is not easy and I do not
want to bother with a bunch of pictures of no use.
I'll give the computer away as soon as I know there is are no further use
for it.

Mouse pointer static on desktop
My daughter uses Win98 (Not sure) at work and the mouse pointer is
static on the desktop. The mouse and another mouse, which works, has
been tried in the PS2 port and the USB port, but without success. The
keyboard is working OK. I have advised her to look at 'Mouse' in Device
Manager to see if 'This device is working properly' and to make
absolutely sure that the mouse is properly connected, but she is not at
work until Tuesday. Any other ideas please?
Thanks,

cd not reading in win98 1st edition
hello, I've been trying to get an old PB 910 to read the cd with no luck (
the PB group has been trying to help me solve this also). It is win 98 and
the cd flashes as power up starts and displays itself on the initial boot
screen. The cd is connected to its own 40 pin ribbon and is listed as
secondary master in the boot up window. The HD is on it own 40 pin ribbon as
well. In the bios the Primary and Secondary master are set to auto.
When in windows any cd inserted always results in cd not ready window
(abort, retry, fail). I have also put in a different cd (2004 toshiba) with
the same results. This MB also has usb ports (if this makes any difference?)
which work quite well. I only wish usb were a boot option in the bios. Any
suggestions to make this cd work...?

e machine ???
Recently a local store has afew e machine 36?? no monitor and running XP
(XP OK for me). It appears that none wants the machines just because
the OS is XP. What I wonder about is how reliable are these e
machines...looking at the box it was made in China but I did not find
a company name or e mail address. Does this mean once you buy it that's
it. ???.

OT: general email query.
Using OE I always have receipt of emails sent,
I was curious to know if it possible to somehow
have a copy of an email one sends to a site dedicated email link.
If I respond to Bloggs and Co, with an email, using their site
I don't seem to get any indication I have responded or sent them
an email, any workarounds?

scanreg.exe switch syntax ?
Hello,
An old friend recently presented me with an "old" W98 based standalone PC !
:-) ...built 20th-May-2000 !
After a long fight, (Asus P5A? AMD K6/2-500), and it hanging on a black
screen, (after bios post and the "Windows 98 screen" with the
"scrolling/rotating" line at the bottom of it), I fought and uninstalled
Norton Internet Security, which I suspected was causing the black screen
hang,
....and indeed after removing Norton - it will boot up in Windows Normal GUI
mode.
So ! before things start going backwards I'd like to scanreg /backup
...and label it. Do I have to use the quotes "??? ??? ???"
....and is it possible that 98's scanreg.exe is mistakenly detecting the
Maxtor Drive ovlerlay / as being a bad sector, or would that not happen ?
In any event, I now have Spinrite 6 running.
TIA

Hi everyone
Starting preparations for all analogue TV going off the air in one year.
Being I use 98 MOST of the time and watch most TV on the PC (old ATI
All-In-Wonder video card, has built-in TV), I'm wanting to find a video
card which has *digital* TV and drivers for Win98SE.
Anyone know of such a card?

What's the difference between FAT32 and Extended FAT File System ?
Extended FAT File System:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa914353.aspx
Vista now has eFAT (or exFAT) compatibility with SP1.
Not sure about XP.
So what are the key technical differences between eFAT and FAT32?
According to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT
- theoretical max file size 2^64 bytes (16 Exabytes) vs 4 Gb (2^32)
- cluster size of up to 2^255 bytes vs 32 mb
(that seems wrong - a cluster can be larger than max file size?)
(FAT32 spec is 32 kb, not 32 mb)
- support for more than 1000 files in a single directory
(what are they comparing it to? FAT32's limit is more than 1000)
- support for access control lists
- support for Transaction-Safe FAT File System (TFAT)
eFAT seems to be Micro$oft's preferred propriatary solution for
portable and fixed storage beyond 4 or 8 gb. Most likely because
FAT32's propriatary status is murky and they don't want it to be
adopted industry-wide as portable storage and devices transitions to
higher capacities (where the currently used but public domain FAT-16
is not able to go).
Does this mean that Vista can be installed and run from an eFAT
drive? Why else would Vista need eFAT compatibility? A slaved drive
or device would most likely be connected via USB so it's not clear why
the file system of the device or drive is relavent. Tag: Today is your day, your mountain is waiting, so get on your way. Tag: 878142

Which Video Card?
I have a used Gateway E3200 450MHZ with 384 MB RAM, running Win98
First Edition. With the Rage 128 AR AGP1X, AGP2x, 8.0M memory video
card that came with it, videos are often choppy. I have a Radeon
WBUC070 video card with AGP 32MB, SVGA video card available to replace
this card. It looks like the model is 7000 A70L. I have another card
...an ATI Radeon 9200SE Stealth video card with 128MB DDR, DVI Out,
PCI version. I assume that either of these cards would be an upgrade.
This computer has a Samsung 173P LCD monitor. The computer is used
for basic email and internet, which occasionally involves streaming
video. There's no gaming done on this system, and no DVD's are played.
The Samsung monitor accepts DVI. With the Radeon 9200SE's DVI output,
would the improvement in image quality be noticeable?
Which of these video cards would be the best upgrade, without going
overboard?
Thanks!

"Error loading KERNEL" message
Hopefully this won't get too longwinded, but as a bit of background, I
recently upgraded my hardware and wanted to keep all the software as
before. I installed a new M.B. and CPU to go from a 600MHz Pentium 3
unit to a 2.6 GHz Celeron unit. Also I cloned over the multiboot
OS's from drive 1 to another HD, since the older one was showing signs
of failing. The program used for cloning was Acronis True Image.
There were 3 OS's on Drive 1, and they also are now on the newly
installed HDD. The heart of the multiboot system is Powerquest's Boot
Magic, that has worked wonderfully for years. The 3 OS's are DOS 6.22
(rarely used anymore), Windows 98SE (most heavily used) and Windows
2000 Pro (used somewhat).
The problem developed subsequent to several days of allowing the new
M.B. and CPU to install all its drivers, etc.
Essentially, I cannot boot up (on the NEW Hard Disk 1) into Win98SE in
Normal mode - I get an error message that says "Error loading KERNEL.
You must reinstall Windows". BUT - much to my annoyance, it WILL
boot up fully in SAFE mode. Nothing that I've tried has cleared up
this anomaly. I've followed the procedure found on MS's web site
which tells me to "extract Kernel32.dll" from my installation CD and
copy it to the folder Windows\System\, all to no avail, after multiple
efforts. In addition, I've copied it over from the presumed "failing"
hard drive, again with no success. I'm about ready to throw in the
towel - hopefully, someone can give me an out. Before someone asks,
there is NO problem booting up in Win2000 on this drive.
Finally, as a further frustating fact, I can still do the multiboot if
I swap out the new HD 1 to the old failing one. But I don't trust it
lasting much longer.
I'm admittedly out of ideas - and if it should be a problem with the
MBR, then I don't know how to repair it.
Sorry it got this long - and it may not have all the useful info
someone might think would lead to a clue. If so, please tell me what
to check.
Thanks, Olin McDaniel
