    - rebooting from boot log disc I have a Gateway CPU it had windows 98se version installed before I dumpped it. I have misplaced my reboot floppy. I tried to download a boot disc download from my other computer ( XP ) to a disc but that didn't work, The Gateway has a CD-Rom drive. I went to the bios screen but I don't know to much about that screen.     - Large Word files and 98SE Word and Win98SE problems I am currently working with a number of large .DOC files, typically 400 pages, lots of photos and diagrams etc. They are between 5 and 60 Meg in size (I know I'm a glutton for punishment, but I didn't create these files) There are two interesting problems: 1) One 50 Meg file always opens in around 10 secs when it is double clicked. Another file of a similar size takes around three minutes to open. In each case the PC was clean booted from cold. 2) I can copy small files from drive to drive with no problem. With an 8 Meg DOC file it takes a little longer - typically 20 seconds. But with a DOC file greater than about 10 Meg: On copying and pasting: a) Nothing happens for around a minute b) Then a dialog box appears stating 'copying - 3 mins left' c) After about five minutes, still '3 minutes left' d) After about ten minutes either it has completed, or its changed to 62,432(etc) mins left, or the PC has locked up.     - How to get rid of mouse cursor when no mouse installed? I'm writing a demo program for a win98 system. The system has no keyboard or mouse. It boots to the application and just runs. Problem is that if I remove the mouse, I get the dialog box that complains that a mouse was not found. If I click "don't show this again"...some trick with no mouse or keyboard, the message does not appear again, but there's a mouse cursor smack in the middle of the screen. I want to be able to attach a mouse for diagnostic work, but need the mouse cursor GONE when there's no mouse. Hidingit won't work, because there's an on-screen popup keyboard that sees the mouse location on top of it and won't go away. Is there some magic incantation to do this? -- Return address is VALID! Background, the Microtime computer had been running Windows 98SE until the computer started to fail. Presently diagnostic routines are being run through to attempt a recovery. The keyboard is erring out and has been tested by using other keyboards which also fail, and the computer apparently never gets to the POST screen. Suggestion was placed to create a AUTOFLASH boot floppy to attempt to re-flash the BIOS. As you appear to get an initial finding of the peripherals except the keyboard on POST you might try to refresh the BIOS with a BIOS flash for that motherboard. This would be accomplished with a floppy disk created to automatically boot and flash the motherboard. At this point it appears that this may be a potential fix as there have been findings related to successful use of this technique to reset corrupted BIOS due to electrical issues, spikes, etc.. First, if at all possible, remove the CMOS battery for about 10 minutes to completely remove any old settings, re-insert after checking whether it is still good [generally 3+ volts] replace if needed [likely CR2032], and run the floppy flash disk. Remember to re-set any Bios settings if this appears to initially correct the issues. | **** ***** Are you referring to a Startup Diskette created by the OS in place? | The wording 'floppy flash disk' is not familiar to me. Yes, or one from bootdisks.com or some place. An autoflash disk has only the basics [command.com, io.sys, etc.] and you create an autoexec.bat to *auto run* the commandline for the flash program. Make sure the autoexec and config sys contain nothing else, e.g., no drivers, no directions, NOTHING except the command line necessary to flash the BIOS. As you're having difficulty with the keyboard, you will need to make sure the boot block is also refreshed, and is included with the BIOS flash. Check on the MB site for the flash tool, its command line needs, AND the proper flash bin [or whatever it uses]. Most have a support forum so if necessary, ask there if the particular flash contains the boot block and was not indicated on the info for the download. Again, make sure the autoexec then contains the command to refresh/overwrite the boot block as the defaults may NOT include this function, in addition to the standard updates that might be included within the BIOS update.. MAKE SURE that the computer you make this autoflash disk on is NOT configured to boot from the floppy to negate the potential of flashing the wrong computer with the wrong BIOS. After creating the autoflash disk, make sure the target computer IS configured to boot from the floppy and has been reset to defaults [which it will be if you removed the battery], then run the autoflash disk. NOTE: Another suggested command line addition is to save the old BIOS prior to the flash in case of continued issues as some sites will look at these files and attempt to diagnose the issues. A friend gave me an upgrade to W98SE. That, when installed, did not appear to cause any problems, except that I could not get it to accept USB cards. In time, the 10GB HD started acting up and I decided to purchase an larger HD. That was a 40GB Maxtor. The software that came with it caused many problems. I managed to follow instructions and set jumpers and cable connection as specified. The original HD became the Secondary Master. Most of my Data are there. There was no problems with all for long time. It was rather peculiar, however, that, whenever I inserted a Boot-disk to boot up from, the system would place me in Secondary Master. The Primary was nowhere to be found. There was a lengthy Post about this problem that involved many of your expert helpers, a year or two back. Gary, PCR, Harvat, but mainly Blanton, to name a few. Bill concluded that there was an overlay. The outcome was that, in order to boot up successfully, I had to hold the CTRL key during the booting cycle and select Boot from Floppy. That would put me in the Primary Master. *** MEB: 3. What is the size of the C drive that is found [is it the actual drive]? **** BAP: If you are referring to the Microtime, that is the one I just commented on. The Risys was about 4GB. ME is the first operating system to include *Restore Points* and newer access routines. 2. The Microtime hard drive was previously determined to have a boot manager installed upon it. A work-around was apparently used on the Microtime computer] to bypass that manager [see Microtime discussion for reference]. 3. The fromer Microtime hard drive may not be being accessed properly on this VAIO computer and may be causing porblems with other drives. What the discussion still needs: 1. The present drive [apparently 60 gig] is partitioned with C {the primary boot partition} as a 15.5 gig drive, adding another drive would move the second partition presently being seen as the 41.6 gig drive D to drive E. The new hard drive would have to be configured as a slave and the first hard drive as master with their jumpers or errors and potential disk corruption could occur. There could also be a hidden partition involved for SONY specific recovery or other, so it may be larger [an 80 gig drive perhaps, though that won't presently affect what we are discussing], what is the actual model and make of that drive? There MAY potentially be a hard drive conflict if the drives are not compatible. What are the two drive's makes and models? 2. The two drives on the second channel [CD and DVD] will be moved to drive F and G, but only IF the OS has not had its drives limited to only see drives up to drive F: limited by either the driver settings, system settings, or something like TweakUI which modified the registry or an inclusion in the system.ini or config.sys [lastdrive=*]. If this is the case, the lost/un-recognized drive will still cause errors even though it is not listed in Windows, it is still holding memory and CMOS/BIOS addressing which Windows may try to assign to other needs, or may cause conflicting system device issues.. 3. The Iomega drive adds potential issues to the mix if it has been set to always use some specific drive letter or IRQ, and/or if [as sometimes happens] it is incompatible with this older drive you are attempting to access. 4. A drive overlay may be part of the issue, but beyond that, we may also be running across a disk or disks which have had Drive Space or Double Space [or another drive compressor] used. 5. Perhaps its time to do - fdisk /status - [DOS prompt] on the disk(s) to see what that shows [using one of the working computers with the target drive properly configured as master or slave. BAP: **** You must be referring to the most recent Computer, Sony. Currently, the drives shown are: A:, C:, D:, E: CD_ROM, F: DVD and G: external ZIP Drive. All work well, except the DVD. It does not see DVD disks created and finalized by a an RCA DVD Player/Writer. It will see commercial DVD disks, but there appears to be a software glitch and won't play them. I am not too interested, at this point, to get involved with that problem. I can easily disconnect both, the Zip and the DVD disks, if that would make it easier to get the HDs from the failed Computer long enough until my data is recovered. More on this on the New Post titled 'Disk Recovery' (RE: Computer Failure ) which will concentrate on the Sony Computer. The Microtime is not functioning. The oldest, the Risys, might have a chance at accepting the HD(s) of the Microtime, but it does not give me a way to transfer the Data to other Media other than to Floppy Disks.     - batch commands work in Win XP but not 98 Why do the following commands result in garbage stored in tractest.txt for Windows 98, but puts the date and time headings into the file "tracetest.txt" for Windows XP as I want? Can these statements be changed in some way so that the date and time are stored in the file properly? date >> tracetest.txt < nul time >> tracetest.txt < nul I have a batch file that puts the date and time in the header of a section of a file prior to running a test. I need to identify the date and time that the test is run. Each time the test is run, the date and time are placed in the file and the test and the results are stored in the file appended to the results of the last test run.     - 98 errors -VPICD, V86MMGR, 386enhanced Have seen a few errors at different times lately when booting / rebooting after system lock-ups. 'While initializing device VPICD: Windows protection error.' 'While initializing (installing??) V86MMGR: error cannot install 386 enhanced MXSD' Not sure if it said installing or initializing. Not sure I got the MXSD part correctly - MVXD? or some variation. And one about dangerously low resources. Tried a couple of SCANRE /RESTORE dates from prior to errors but still got the VPICD error on this last boot. W98 with 2 drives - First is just Windows and other programs - only 2 out of 6 gigs used Second is just files, fotos, vids - about 80 out of 95 gigs used. Second has been as high as 90 out of 95 without problems. Its usually in the 70-75 out of 90 range Have start up sequence set to display Normal, Safe Mode, Command Promp Only , etc menu with 30 second wait period. Ocasiionaly Normal doesn't load and it goes back to the menu with Safe Mode hilighted but can usually choose Normal again and complete the start-up. Nothing out of the ordinary with SpyBot, Ad-Aware, SpyWare Blaster or AVG scans. Nothing new in Add/Remove Programs list or ALT/CTRL/DEL list Thaught I'd post this first while this rig seems to be working OK and will start searching for solutions / references.     - Changing small letters back to proper Capital letters in .doc HELP!!!! I have a 40 page .doc story document that is all caps. I wish to change it into regular type print, small letters. However, it's easy to use the format change in Word, but how do I change all the letters that should be capitalized back into caps? Letters like I, or proper nouns, or even the first word of every sentence. Don't tell me to manually change everyone.     - Opening Opera web pages on my computer This is sort of a general question in Windows 98, so if this is the wrong group I'm sorry. A while ago I changed the default browser in my Win 98 computer from IE to Opera. At around the same time, I think, all the web pages saved on my computer changed their icon to the Opera icon from the IE icon. But now I see that when I click on one of these saved web pages, it doesn't open the document, it just activates the Opera application. If I hold shift and right click the html document's icon, and choose the Open With dialog box, and choose Opera, the same thing happens: the Opera application gets activated, but the document does not open. However, if I use the Open With dialog and choose IE or Firefox, the document opens normally in IE or Firefox. How can I simply open the web page in Opera?     - Ad-Aware I know that this post does not belong here but I have no choice this is the only place I will get an answer. I have no Ad-aware SE, since December 31, 2007 you can not get definition updates and they tell you to get Ad-Aware 2007, but it seems that it does not support Windows 98, and I have Windows 98.     - Need Help Re-Installing MS Works 4.5 My Packard Bell Win98 came with MS Works 4.5 pre-installed,and for reasons unknown, some of the functions are no longer working. when I attempt to reinstall it with the setup.exe file, located in the MS Works folder, it ask me to insert the MS Works cdrom. The only disk that I have that came with this pc is a Packard Bell Companion CD disk and the Master Recovery Disk. The Companion CD contains the initial Win98 installation files. I upgraded to Win98 SE (have that CD disk also)sometime ago. Which one of these disk would I go about locating the necessary re-installation file(s) and how would I go about it? Are there any "Free" downloads out there that you can suggest in helping me get this thing cleaned up SAFELY. For instance, is Spybot good to run for spyware and is AVAST better than AVG as a Virus protection ?     - Windows 98 updates My parents are still using Windows 98 and their system is at a snails-pace, and often freezes up. I started by checking for updates and realized it's been some time since they did this themselves. It showed 13 Critical Updates and 43 Windows 98 SE updates, I know, WOW.     - Spybot Problem - A Workaround Some of you may be finding that the latest versions of Spybot S&D (1.5.1 and above) won't run on 98, giving the following error: "Exception EAccessViolation in module SPYBOTSD.EXE at 002E 6098. Access violation at address 006E 609B in module 'SPYBOTSD.EXE'. Read of address FFFFFFFF." Someone on the Spybot forums has come up with a workaround, namely that you start Dr Watson first, *then* run Spybot. It seems to work. Safer-Networking claim that the problem is caused by Windows memory management, but I'm not convinced.     - I had planned to tell you about something great Much of this post is written for a win98 audience, but not all of it. I had planned to tell you about something great, about software for win98 that would soon disappear, so you should get it now. But now I'm not sure what to say. I'm talking about free photo arranging and editing software. When developing film, I've been getting a copy put on CD, and this would also apply to digital camera images. I've been getting one roll done at as many different processors as possible. Kodak, Ritz Camera (is that only around here?), Walmart, and any place else that seems to use a different processor, because each processor has its own software on the CD. More about the others later, but the Walmart CD, processing by Fujica, seemed to be maybe the best and certainly the one with the most interesting story. It has a viewer on the CD which worked fine, and had in itself the abiltiy to email photos, complete with photo compression, by a factor of 10, to make uploading and downloading go more quickly**. This is something my email program alone can't do. And I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to be able to burn photos to a CD too, and while one could do that with Nero etc. I think this will turn out to be better integrated with the viewer. I can send the software to anywho wants, but it's probably not necessary as you will see below. When closing the viewer, it then as promised gives one the opportunity to install an editor, called the Photo Manager, which it says has the ability to get out red eye, to adjust contrast, brigntess, color, and something else. Normally I wouldn't bother, but there are occasional pictures that really could use improvement, and if it works well and is easy, maybe even more could. So I do that and the software install gets all the way to the copy files step, and when it is almost done, it stops, the progress bar goes backwards, and it says it couldn't install, it has not left anything in my system (except it turns out 3 files in the temp directory, but that's not much) and to try again. Trying again and again gives the same problem. When the progress bar reverses, in small print very quickly it displays "rolling back actions"! So I called the Walmart Photo Customer service, and they (the woman I talked to asked someone else) didn't know the answers, knew about printing pictures for customers but not about software. So I wrote the email address given, and I think a computer read the email and because I had made one passing reference to the Walmart Photo Center, wrote back about that only. So I wrote again, spelling it Foto Sentre, and this time I got an email that addressed the Photo Manager. But what did it say? "We received your email and we no longer use the photo manager, you can know upload your pictures straight from our site." The misspelling of "now" makes it seem that the email was written by a real person, but otoh, I knew a cook in the WWII army who said that for every 1000 powdered eggs, they would throw in one real egg shell to make the soldiers think they were getting real eggs. I wouldn't put it past corporations to put mistakes in computer-generated letters to make them seem real (although the first email I got had no such errors, and it was even more likely to be computer-generated. But anyhow, they "no longer use the photo manager"!!! This despite the fact that they include the software, separately from the viewer, on the CD I got only 8 days earlier, and they have a win2000/XP version available for download on the Walmart photo webpage!!! It sounds like she's flat out lying to me, but in case she wasn't, I didn't reply to her on this because fore the people with win2000/XP, I want the software to be still available. What they want me to do is to upload any picture I take to their wegsite and to edit them there. A) Sometimes I go to my parents and that's a great opportunity to do things I don't have time to do at home, but they only have dial-up. My laptop isn't even set up for dial-up and it it were, I don't want to spend hours downnloading and uploading so that I can edit from the Walmart server. B) Sometiems I go camping at various places in the woods, or I spend a day at the beach. No internet there at all, but plenty of time to edit pictures on my laptop. It is a self-centered power-grab for Walmart to take away the software that worked on the customers' computers and replace it with what only works from their server. (If they had never offered the better software, I wouldn't know and wouldn't complain, but they did, so I do.) Failing in this course, I tried another: I had noted that when the viewer started up, it said something like "Preclick Powered", so I guessend and went to www.preclick.com and that has some good stuff. The PhotoBackPack for U3 drives (flash drives) looks great, absolutely great, and it might work great to show my pictures to my brother in Dallas, who has XP. I already happen to have a 2 gig U3 drive, (Sandisk, only 20 dollars at Best Buy, more elsewhere), and it came with U3 software on it, but since I only have win98SE, I don't know if I can or how to install it. *I didnt' understand what U3 was for until I looked at this, and at www.u3.com **I would think that the picture compression can be useful. While one picture isn't much (3-500K, sometimes more) even uncompressed, they mount up quickly if you want to send 10 or 30. With just 10, now we're talking about 4 meg so getting it down to 400K total, even with broadband, is helpful. And I sent a copy to myself and the quality looks just as good as the original, at least with the kind of snapshots I was taking. I'm sorry this is so long, but I hope it is helpful.     - Question about Mouse settings My current Computer is a Sony VAIO - Pentium 4 - CPU 1300M. From the settings options, the mouse appears to be set at double click, but whenever I attempt at highlighting/selecting a group of objects (jpeg, .txt or whatever files) and single click on the first of a series, it immediately wants to work with the first object and gives me no time to highlight any other or range of others. Seems similar to the following (see link below) but I don't understand how to see the "illegal operation" messages that are mentioned. All I know is that the installation chokes right after the vip.386 popup is clicked on and then after the reboot the device manager says the network card has been disabled because it caused a problem at startup. Essentially I ended up booting up the machine with no drivers and Windows installed a Default Monitor. I bought something that came with a CD and on it was the owners manual, which was a 9 meg pdf file. Looking for later software, I went to their website and downloaded the manual, which was 2 megs.     - How to read harddrive that was once too big for mobo. How to read harddrive that was once too big for mobo? I have a hard drive that was too big for the mobo that I first used it on. I think it is 800 Meg (but I'll check again if it matters) and when I bought it, I think Western Digital had a remapping program that allowed the drive to pretent to the mobo that its geometry was different from reality. I tried connecting it as a slave, setting the jumpers correctly, and iirc, it wasn't recognized at all. I bought an enclosure and hooked it up to the USB port, and although the computer seees the enclosure and installs or loads the HDUSB stuff, the drive never shows up on any drive list. Conecting it as a master drive has its own problems, which see below, and furthermore, I have another drive from the same persion which was never a master drive and doesn't have an OS on it. So I can't connect it as the master drive. Wot should I do? I have a Promise card that would have iiuc enabled me to run these drives without the remapping software that it uses, but wouldn't the remapping software still run since it is there, regardless of whether it is plugged into the new, powerful mobo, or the Promise card? When I was using this drive as my master drive, when the computer booted up, just after the very beginning of start-up, a white box with blue text, or something, displayed, giving notice that this software was running. Now I have a newer mobo and much bigger hd's, but I want to get some data off of this HD. I tried last October, and iirc I couldn't use it as a slave drive. So I used it as the master and made my primary a slave. It gave all kinds of warnings at the start that convinced me it wouldn't start, but somehow it did, and I got the data I needed then. However after I shut down, and removed the drive, and reset my real drive as Single Drive, it wouldn't start. (I was leaving on a long business trip the next day and had a friend coming in to download my email, so I was really bothered. ) I controlled my panic and booted from a floppy, and sys'ed the HD and bingo, it worked again. How did the old HD un-sys or de-sys or re-sys the newer HD while it was temporarily a slave? How can I avoid this from happening altogether. Thanks a lot. I took out the sound icon (the one you use to open up and adjust the sound
properties and mute things as well) out of startup near the clock and I don't
know how to put it back in there near the clock. I've looked all over and
can't seem to find it at all. Can you please tell where to look and how to do
it and get it back near the clock again.

Start Control Panel, Sound tick box "Place volume icon in the taskbar"

(this is XP, but I don't think it's changed)

In Windows 98 it is:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Multimedia > Audio tab > "Show
Volume Control in Taskbar" check box
