Letter from Windows Live Mail team

Did not want to join the other post on this. I got a letter from the
above stating that if I was using Outlook Express to access my Windows
Live Hotmail account that it would no longer work later this year.

According to Qwest my ISP, I have a Windows Live Premium account as
part of my broadband package. If what I am reading is correct then,
because I have the premium account, I will not have to worry about
using OE to send and download my Hotmail.

Is that correct?

No. Microsoft is stopping to support the protocol OE uses to communicate
with the hotmail servers. So you can only use webmail, or you'll have to
migrate to another mailclient.

No, that's incorrect from what we know at this point. Unless you're
currently accessing or able to access the MSN/Hotmail account in OE via
POP3, this change will affect you. See Qualifying Accounts and Exclusions

The Windows Live Mail team is currently monitoring a few English-language
newsgroups in order to field questions about this change. These newsgroups
include microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general,
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general, and microsoft.public.internet.mail.

Are you saying that OE can't use pop3 to access the hotmail servers?

Unless you're a Hotmail Plus subscriber and have configured the account for
POP3 access, no.

How will this affect the various ISP's that have contracted out their
e-mail hosting to hotmail?

I'm thinking of Sympatico, which has been actively migrating (forcing)
many of it's subscribers still using the Sympatico pop3 servers to
start using the MSN/Hotmail/Sympatico co-branded product.

AFAIK, such MSN Partner accounts can only be accessed via WebDAV (see
Exclusions section of
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!171.entry);
hence such accounts will no longer be accessible in OE after 30 June 2008
unless (1) the account holder is a Hotmail Plus subscriber *and* (2) the
account is accessible via POP3. (Personally, I wouldn't wait until July 1st
to find out.)

Good luck getting anything helpful out of Bell Sympatico about this.
Chances are, they'll tell you to contact MSN/Hotmail (who will then probably
tell you to contact Bell Sympatico).
