I have been having problem with Desktop icons when using the arrange icons
menu selection. The icons become misaligned on left side of the screen even
though the name, type, size and date are in order the icons themselves are
in disarray. There are two users with personalized desktop settings.

If I set the display properties dialogue on the effects tab with large icons
checked, this will straighten out the misaligned icons. If I switch back to
small icons the correction will continue to this setting up to the point
that I use the arrange icon or line up icon on the application menu. This
becomes tiresome when working.

Any idea as to what is wrong with this feature?

It was programmed by Microsoft.

Get Wintidy. SHOULD fix it, although as far as I can follow,
your problem is a little more bizarre than the usual "icons
won't stay where I put them!"

A few things:

Are you using the logoff {user} function rather than a restart>logon?

Did you try deleting the Icon cache and letting it rebuild after placing
the Icons in the order you wish?

Have you installed any programs which *protect* the registry and/or other
Windows areas?

Are you sure you don't have other Icons below [or on top off] the ones you
are moving/arranging?

There are several tools available that can save specific Icon placements
[generally {e.g., 1024x768} or by named desktop].

If you would like to try one out, look for WinTidy.

In response to your questions.
1. logon/logoff user and at end of day shutdown. The restart/reboot only
when needed or requested.
2. I don't know where the icon cache is located. I have used disk
cleanup utility and ccleaner and manually in msiev.6 browser.
3. yes; spysweeper and avast and ccleaner does a registry scan also.
4. no; this is not the problem.
5. desktop is set at 1024x768
I am not looking for a quick fix program. This is a result of not having
some check in password/user profile enabled or a display properties
quirk/bug. Also, this is only happening on my desktop, the other user is not
having this problem. Both are set the same privileges though.

| In response to your questions.

Those were preliminary questions, to help define potentials.

| 2. I don't know where the icon cache is located. I have used disk

The Icon cache is located in the main Windows directory. It is named
ShellIconCache, though you must have set your viewing to allow system, and
hidden files to be viewed. Between this, and several individual settings
including .hht, swap file, registry entries, and various programs you may
have installed, can potentially produce the effect you are encountering.

| 3. yes; spysweeper and avast and ccleaner does a registry scan also.
| 4. no; this is not the problem.

It may be that your personal desktop settings, saved in the registry {and
hht files if View as Web Page is enabled}, are NOT being properly updated,
hence my questions related to registry protection/monitoring tools. Some
Anti-Virus, anti-SpyWare, tweaking, and other like tools/programs now
include protection scemes for HOSTS, system files, the registry, and other
attempts to avoid potential corruption issues. These may interfer with user
adjusted settings, particularly if these changes are made without a complete
shutdown allowing the registry to refresh and memory and swap to
clear/reset.

You bring a good potential point, which deals with individual USER
settings. Check the Control Panel > USERS, and ensure that users have the
ability to save personal settings.

The program I suggested isn't a quickfix. It provides additional ability to
ensure the Icon/desktop settings can be immediately defined and saved, and
either automatically reset upon misadjustment, or manually. Desktop
corruption has always been an issue in Win9X when dealing with multiple
users and desktop resolution changes {games, desktop windowing, image
manipulation, etc.}, hence the programs that were produced to take care of
this issue.

Also:
It might be advisable to check the size of the registry files, you MAY be
having issues with parsing. Additionally, the particular video card/chip
settings may need adjustment or refreshing.

I searched for ShellIconCache with the "show all" setting and did not find
this file/folder. Could this have another name?

The personal settings are: Password>user profiles; radio button> users can
customize... and check box> desktop icons and network... [ I did not have
desktop icon and net...checked] I do now. And Users>change settings>check
desktop and doc and radio button>create copies. [ I did not have the check
box for desktop and doc menu checked] I do now, this may have been the
problem. I think the reason I did not have these checked was there were
additional shortcuts added to one desktop and a need for this on the other
users desktop. A bit confusing, I guess it was the lowest level of
personalized settings tweakable.

Spysweeper does have a hostfile protect enabled.

I am not certain where to check the registry settings for the parsing
question on size.

*Another problem I have noted recently is that when switching users at log
on/off, the widows explorer navigation bar sometimes loses the icons in the
tree and the quick launch tool bar also loses the icons. A reboot of the
system usually recovers this back to the normal.

Instead of relying on the Find command, did you look for it in windows
explorer directly?

I think its located in the c:\windows folder (or maybe it was
c:\windows\system, but I don't think so)

Normally that file gets rebuilt if deleted, although it may take a couple of
reboots (or better yet, turn the computer off, and then on again), to do it.

No, that is its name, and it is located where I indicated, in the main
Windows folder/directory. Please re-read the suggestions.

IF as you indicate, you changed the USER settings, that will help to keep
your own settings. However, as previously indicated, this issue may crop up
in the future, so get one of the tools and negate the issue.

Registry parsing/registry size is found by looking at the sizes of USER.DAT
and SYSTEM.DAT in the main Windows folder via Explorer. But you MUST have
Hide file extensions for known file types [unchecked], Show All Files,
{Hidden files} [checked] properly set to view all the files. Might also want
to check Show Attributes so you can see what the files are, e.g.,
hidden/system/read only/archive.

You don't do anything with it (nor open it). It's supposed to be there.
(unless you think its corrupted, or giving you some weird desktop icon
problems, in which case you can delete it, and it will be rebuilt, as I
mentioned in the other post)

Why are you trying to open it in the first place? You shouldn't be.
It's a windows data file for the cache.
