Ad-Aware, etc...

So Ad-Aware no longer works. What are Win98 security tools are people
now using? I installed Avast recently but I can't get them to send me
a registration number. Do they dislike Hotmail accounts? Thanks.

Ad-Aware SE will still work but you'll have to update manually. See

Spybot is still supported in Win9x:

Those posts and procedures are a year old now though.
There are no more definition updates for W98 Ad-Aware SE v1.06r

If you try to update v1.06r manually with a newer update it will
corrupt itself.

There should be no difficulty obtaining your number via hotmail from my
experience.. You might want to check though for your settings for the
filtering [if you have done that] in the HotMail account.

As mentioned, SB&D performs the same basic function as AdAware, also
install SpyWare Blaster for additional static protections.
Its generally not recommended to use inoculate, tea timer/auto in SpyBot
Search & Destroy.

There are several other available tools which is support 98.

Everything I have read here is great, right on the money information.
Here is a link to the last known working def for Ad Aware from May 13:

That's nice, but when an app like AdAware stops getting updates, it's time
to consider other options. Yes, it wouldn't hurt to have it on hand and to
scan, even with old defs, but then you have to remember to not check for
updates. I'd find that to be an annoyance, because I'd be certain to
absentmindedly click OK when prompted, and then I'd have to go dig up the
D/L you provided (probably store it in the AdAware program folder), and
replace the screwed up ones. As the defs get older and older and more likely
to also be covered by other apps like SuperAntiSpyware.

The update button no longer works, all people who have tried to update
lately have had to do a manual install of the update as downloaded in
zip format from Lavasoft or a mirror. The updates posted after 5/13
have all given error messages when the program loads. I use all of
the other programs posted, but still think it not a bad idea to keep a
copy of AA on hand just in case it catches something the other might
miss. If you are starved for disk space, then I would consider
removing it for something that is kept current.

Thanks for posting the link to that last working ref's though, the def's
do work fine in W98/2K/XP.

On Win98SE the updates button wont work you're right, but on XP it does
connect online, however you're prompted that this SE version is no longer
supported.

It's best if one gets a good AV instead like my favorite NOD32 or one of
the other great ones mentioned around here, and as far as AA goes my
analogy is that it's just a mosquito catcher and basic MRU pointer anyway,
but for free it was worthy.
