I recently installed W2k on a computer (completely updated) and it seems to
be working fine BUT, maybe once a week when I turn it on it shows the
default (first boot) desktop and any customized settings I have put in have
reverted to the default settings. What am I missing here? How can I get it
to keep my customized settings?

Sounds like profile corruption for one reason or another. Might be the disk
drive has failed.
