    - WinSxS, functional under 2k ? Using windows 2000 Pro SP4. After a reinstall and some cleaning, I noticed I "caught" a winsxs folder, which some research shows to be for use with Windows XP and later side-by-side DLL storage. Was this function somehow retro-fit to Windows 2000 by a Windows update (which I doubt... but safer to ask the experts) ? Am I free to simply delete the contents of the winsxs folder ?     - Sharing Printers from another computer Hi all. I have a computer running Windows Vista Home Premimum. I have an HP All in One Printer shared on the vista computer. I would like a user who is running a laptop with Windows 2000 Professional to be able to send documents to my HP Printer. However I install the printer and type in the user name and password to connect to the Vista Machine and I can then send something to print. Then when I shutdown the windows 2000 machine and restart it and go into printers, it says Access Denied, Unable to connect. I am assuming its because it is not saving the username and password.     - Migration from Server 2000 w/IIS 5 to Server 2003 w/IIS6.0 ISAPI f I installed an ISAPI filters (Oracle SSO) on a Windows Server 2000 system wih IIS 5, which serves classic ASP from an ASP application. This configuration functioned without fault. After an upgrade to new hardware and Windows 2003 SE SP2 with IIS 6.0 the old ASP application was copied to this new server. After installing the ISAPI filter (Oracle SSO), numerous worker process errors have started to appear. This is a major annoyance and often results in an IIS 6.0 crash.     - Remote Shutdown Another awkward question - sorry. Trying to shut down remotely a Win2 server. Using shutdown.exe from command line "shutdown -s -m \\server /-t10" for 10 second delay. Shuts down server but does NOT shut down the PC, leaving the old fashioned "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message. Shutdown.exe is 5.1.2600.2180 HOW can I also get it to turn off the computer? This is needed as I want to shutdown from other side of the world and as only file server without AD can only access a desktop on another machine through pcanywhere.     - User's can't change password This is strange. Starting yesterday, we've had users whose passwords have expired try to change their passwords, but they can't. We have a password complexity requirement and when the users try to change their password, the change fails and the complexity requirement dialog box is displayed. I've verified that the complexity issue has indeed been met. We have a test user and I've verified that I cannot change the password. This user's password was NOT close to expiring. On our FSMO role holder, I've run NETDIAG and DCDIAG and both run clean with no errors. EventViewer looks clean too. No replication problems (replmon).....No Group Policy problems (no errors in logs). We have had problems for a while with user accounts getting locked out several times a day and have been unable to pinpoint the cause. It was random and effected different users for a period of time, then 'moved on' to different users.     - Audio notifications I wondered why I wasn't getting audio notification of new email, so I went to Start->Settings->ControlPanel->SoundsAndMultimediaProperties- >Sounds->SoundEvents. I clicked on NewMailNotification and Exclamation. I got the messages chime.wav and chord.wav cannot be found, then the speaker icons disappeared from beside those two items. I wanted to avoid making any more speaker icons disappear, so I didn't click on any more items. I also searched C-drive for those wav files, but they could not be found. I have since found that new mail does indeed sound a beep, due to options set in outlook. So I probably just didn't hear it before. However, appointment and meeting reminders pop up silently. This is not ideal, since I could be reading, and hence not looking at the screen. Does the NewMailNotification do nothing? It seems that this option is controlled from Outlook. 1. I assume that the wav files are defaults -- is this true? If so, is it abnormal for them to be absent? 2. The Exclamation item sounds important, like Windows warning you that you did something dumb.     - MrxSmb - 8034 - (c0000017) warning Hello people. I have the notorious "MrxSmb" "8034" warning in most (if not all.. Windows 2000 installations in the network of my work. Searching in the net i found a lot of suggestions but none of the seems to match exactly my case. The problem is that i find "c0000017" as the last DWORD parameter whic means "STATUS_NO_MEMORY". We have installed two domain controllers (Win2k). This warning (along with some other similar warnings) appears in othe client too but rarely. It wouldn't mind at all if this thing didn't cause a halt in procedure of a specific client (Win2k) that collects statistics fro other clients in the network and pass them to Oracle 9.1 installed.Thi thing happens some times in a monthly scale so the only solution yet i restarting.     - "Error-Handler" process shows up periodically in task manager -> what is This question pertains to a win-NT4 server system, but I'm posting here because (a) I don't see too many microsoft NT4 news groups, and (b) I would guess that this issue would have the same answer as win-2K. Basically, this is a system running NT4 server. It runs in a basement machine room, and can run for weeks without anyone checking on it. I noticed last night that it was performing periodic heavy disk access - about 1 minute of continuous disk access every 5 minutes. During the 1 minute of disk access, I see this process in the task manager: Image Name: Error-Handler PID: 282, 290, (I guess this is not important) CPU: 90% + memory usage: 2 to 6 Mb (seems to fluctuate) When disk access stops, that process goes away. When I look at the various logs in the event viewer, I see no entries related to an error condition. How can I track down what error or condition is causing this process?     - How to make Explorer show files in Details view After I set one directory to the Details view, I go to Tools/Folder Options/View and click on the Like Current Folder. Problem is that it doesn't force Details as the default view for all folders the next time I open Explorer. The directories I manually set to Details remember that view, but the others remain in the default Large Icons view. Suggestions? From the Client Machines we are able to do Remote Desktop Logon o SAP-Server (192.168.10.7),but we are unable to ping it and also th DNS(192.168.10.2). And I am unable to add any new client in the DNS,I am getting erro message "Network Path Not Found" WINS is enabled on the DNS File and Printer Sharing is enabled nslookup is giving me error- "Default Server Unknown" Please Help Me........     - Increasing size of task bar Windows 2000 SP4. I drag the upper edge of the taskbar up so that it occupies two rows. I was thinking that my tasks on the taskbar would occupy two rows so that each one is wider, and I can see the full filename. Nada, doesn't happen. The quick launch buttons occupy an entire row of the two rows. I'm (figuratively) smacking my forehead against the display. I have to increase the height of taskbar to three rows in order to get two rows for my tasks. Is there anyway to prevent the quick launch buttons from hogging and wasing an entire row of space? Everytime I drag and drop a file to the drive, it hangs (the file is copied but I am not able to eject the CD). I need to disable the drive at Device Manager, eject the CD, and re-enable it again.     - Replacing hard drives and resizing I have a HP DL360 G3 with 2 * drives in a raid 1 config on a 2003 server. There is little space left and I want to upgrade the drives. The raid is handled by the built in smart array 5i controller Is it be possible to remove 1 drive and replace with larger drive and once the raid has rebuilt remove the second drive with a larger drive and again raid rebuilt.     - Print Processor problem, HPXPP4wm, We are having trouble with some HP LJ 4250s printers that are networked,They're using a PCL 6 driver. The print server is a Win2k server. The printers, Print Processor are set to "HPZPP4wm", by default. But over the last 2 months, users printing multi page jobs are having them come out last page first and they canâ??t print using legal paper from any tray. If I switch printerâ??s Print Processor to â??WinPrintâ?? everything works fine. The problem is after several weeks the â??Print Processorâ?? resets back to "HPZPP4wm" and weâ??re back to square one.     - Changing Windows 2000 member computer's name... Hello, I have a Windows 2000 sever, that is a NT 4 Domain member. I have to change the computer name by using the minimum amount of administrative effort and trying to maintain the group/user id's information. I was told that renaming a NT domain member requires you to create a new computer account and also to leave the domain, restart, rejoin the domain and restart again. I'm concerned that any domain id's/groups that were in local groups may be lost, even though we're adding the server back into the same domain. I'm also thinking about file/web permissions from the domain. Is there a way to retain the SID information ? Do we really need to remove the server from the domain before changing the name?     - Changing motherboards, now Win2000 CD won't boot for installation I've switched from a real old, Asus P2B, motherboard to a slightly newer one, Asus P4PE. My Win2000 CD, which has worked many times in the past, now when I try to boot up to install Win2000, will go through the first screen that lists all the components and then stop with these words: Boot from Atapi CD-ROM: no emulation. I can boot up in DOS using the Hirens CD. And I've tried to install Win2000 via DOS, and I can get partway through the installation, but when the installation starts copying all the files onto the hard drive...some of them won't copy and so I can't get a good installation. I've checked this Win2000 CD on my other computer and it will go through the installation without this bad files problem.     - corrupt files in W2K system I'm having issues with a Win2000Pro SP4 installation (workstation). I had some files corrupt on the hard drive and ended up running a repair - chkdsk /f and getting the hard drive to read correctly now. Win2KPro wouldn't boot. The drive is still ok - I'm dual booting into other OS's just fine. However, it appears the corruption was in/on a section of the drive that had the 2KPro system files. It starts to boot into 2K and goes to the black screen with the white boxes across the bottom and hangs on the second little box. That part appears to be past bootldr and etc. I tried to do an inplace upgrade-repair of the partition and got a parallel install into the WINNT directory. The original is in the WINDOWS directory (since it was an upgrade from Win98SE). My question is - what file(s) can I copy to replace the bad file in the WINDOWS directory so that installation of Win2K can boot up? There's a lot of programs/settings/etc I really want to save and possibly upgrade into WinXPPro without doing a clean install? Thanks so much, in advance!     - disabling device per HW profile, but option greyed out ! I need to disable certain devices in a particular HW profile. In a normal situation this is a no-brainer, Device Manager has a 3- way scroll-box with options to enable/disable/enable in this HW profile for each device. However, that option has been deactivated (is greyed-out, and the scroll-box non functional) for some of the devices which I want to disable :=( The only possibility apparently remaining would be to remove the device(s) completely from system, which is /not/ what I want !!! Please tell how to reenable the choice - I assume it's a flag to reset somewhere in the registration information for the affected device(s). Alternately, may I use "devcon" to permanently disable a device from the current HW profile /only/ ? Or, could I find and nuke the appropriate bit(s) in the devices' .inf installer file(s) ? Please help ! I know what I'm doing disabling these devices, in fact I have done it previously but, the greyed-out status is new, probably post device driver updates.
