    - DHCP Redundant Configuration Question Hello folks, We've got a domain that has about 120 DHCP clients. We've got two Win2K DCs. Until recently, all of our DHCP was handled by the second domain controller. I modified the setup to provide some DHCP redundancy and have some questions. Here is the current setup: DC1 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.157 - 10.1.5.254 DC2 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.156 The overlapping scopes and mutually exclusive exclusion lists were set up based on a recommendation in TechNet DHCP best practices. This basically leaves half of range on each DHCP server. With the current setup, each DHCP server has 97 available addresses to hand out which, I know, is not enough for the 120 DHCP clients. The hope is that it would be enough to get us through a crunch if one of the servers went down. Until I can get additional IP space allocated, I will have to live with that setup. I do have some questions about this setup that some of you may be able to answer: - Is there a chance a client will not be able to get an address under normal operations? For example, if the scope on one server fills up and the client happens to hit that server, will it get denied and give up? - Is there any better way of setting this up without changing the IP range?     - Task scheduler Hello, I have a task scheduled to run a on a Win2k Pro machine. It is setup to run at 3:15AM and for some reason it is executed twice. Once at 2:15 AM and then at 3:15AM.     - Strange Mouse Problem I'm been using with great success for many years a Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 optical mouse, with the receiver plugged into a PS2 port (via a USB/PB2 adapter) on the rear of the computer. (Don't ask why I didn't use a spare USB connection back there, because I don't remember.) Recently, after using the computer an hour or so, the mouse stops working, like its batteries were weak, but they aren't. I've use Control Panel to uninstall and reinstall it. It will work for a while, then the pointer motion gets "sticky," and finally stop working. The really strange part is that if I plug a corded mouse into a USB port, the wireless Microsoft one starts working. Any suggestions, other than leaving the corded one plugged in? I am experimenting with plugging the receiver into the USB port, but it's puzzling why things that had been working right for so long no longer do.     - Older PC slows down with USB 2.0 printer Hello, I added a USB 2.0 PCI card to an older PC to accomodate a new Canon USB 2.0 inkjet printer. The card installed fine and is working, but here's the problem. All it takes is for the printer to be turned on, and the PC becomes very slugginsh. Running HDtach shows about 40mbps (on an Ultra66 Promise controller) while it runs at 58mbps when the printer is turned off. Why would the USB device cripple the PC?     - Thumbnail View capability missing from Win 2000 Explorer. I have two PCs, both running W2K Build 2195 (i.e. SP4 or whatever). On one PC, Win Explorer behaves fine: - Menu item "View" lists Large Icons, Small Icons, List, Details, and Thumbnails. - Selecting Thumbnail works just fine: thumbs.db gets created and .JPG file entries display TNs. - IE 5.5 is installed. On the other PC, thumbnail capability is completely absent: - "View" has only Large Icons, Small Icons, List, and Details. - Newsnet experts say to R-click on a folder, and on the context menu's General tab, activate a "Thumbnail checkbox". There is NO such checkbox. The only checkboxes are Read-Only and Hidden. - I also tried Run-ning that install-THUMBVW.DLL thing and Restart-ed the system. No dice. - IE 6 is installed. (TweakUI is installed on both systems--altho' its UI has no About, so don't know what version it is.) So what's the problem? Some difference in IE 6 vs.5.5?     - Copying a print file to a network computer. I've been sending a print file (.prn) to a local, parallel-port printer by simply copying the file to LPT1 via a batch file. I now want to send the same file to a printer which is attached to the network via a print server. How can I do that in a batch file?     - Is there a way to install the WIA service in Windows 2000? My company uses our own application to scan docments through a "Plustek Mobile Office D28 Corporate" scanner, but our application freezes periodically. The only fix we have found is to use a WIA driver that uses the WIA windows service. I see the WIA service is in later Window's O/S' like XP, but I need it in Windows 2000.     - How to stop connections to Microsoft I disabled the automatic updates because it was setting off the firewall too often (I haven't found enough details to make the proper firewall rules). There are still attempts to connect to microsoft IP addresses. What else can be causing these connection attempts?     - Hard Drive Running Constantly - Win2K-Pro This is a new (clean) installation and it seems as if the hard drive is running all the time. I checked the Windows Task Manager and there is one process, svchost.exe running in multiple instances and has a high CPU usage at times.     - Need IE6 for Win2k-pro - SP4 I just finished installing Win2k w/SP4 (clean install on its own drive) and I cannot find IE6 on the Microsoft site. I tried to install TaxCut and it will not work with IE5 (for whatever reason) - and it directs me to get IE6 from Microsoft. Except, I cannot find it. Does anyone know if IE6 is still available?     - Running batch files before Windows loads Another odd question from Somerset! Having trolled the various resources I still can not find the answer, so here goes! I have a duel boot with Win98/dos and win2k. I have a batch file that I wish to run BEFORE windows loads that deletes all the index.dat files plus many more, including emptying the temp folder. The batch file works fine from win98 dos. Runs as command promt (but obviously can not delete protected files). I know can call it from the registry startup commands, but how do I run it before windows even loads, preferably before the boot menu comes up?     - hardware eject causes computer crash When I ejected a USB external drive, the computer crashed and when restarting, the User Name is the same, but all the things associated with the user are as if I was a brand new user and have to set up internet and e-mail accounts from the beginning. I can see the newly created user (Name.computername) in windows explorer and the original user as well (Name). Is there a way to get the 'original user' back?     - Repost: Popup during Copy/Move SP 4 In Windows Explorer Tools/Folder Options/View/Advanced settings: the check box labeled "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items" is UNCHECKED.     - file corruption and other problems I'm using Windows 2000 with DOS v5 and have one serious problem and a couple of small ones. I had about 500 jpgs which I transferred from my old machine, mostly of album covers and musicians etc. Almost all of them have somehow become corrupted and unreadable. Worse than t hat, some save under different names; I don't know how this came about, and am extremely worried about this. The last time I had a problem like this was with WordStar restoring from floppies donkeys years ago. I am also unable to get long file names onmy machine, and video sites such as Youtube and other media play too fast. Can anyone offer any advice on this?     - can't boot windows 2000, stop error 0x0000006B Hello-- I have never had any real problems with my windows 2000 machine (I actually prefer it to my work machine, which runs XP), until I tried to burn a video CD with Nero the other day. The machine completely locked up, was totally unresponsive to CTRL ALT DEL, and it wouldn't even respond to the power button. I disconnected the power supply, and now when I try to reboot it gets a few seconds into the Windows 2000 Professional screen, then it flips to a blue screen with the following: *** STOP: 0x0000006B (0xC0000033,0x00000002,0x00000000,0x00000000) PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED ...followed by instructions to reboot the machine in Safe Mode, but it can't even do that. I have not installed any new hardware in months and months (the last hardware installed was a CD burner that has burned hundreds of audio CDs--with the same Nero software that I used to burn a video CD when the machine locked up--over the past 2 years or so since I installed it; I did install a KVM switch to go between this win2000 machine and my work machine, but that has been in regular constant use for 6-8 months with no problems), but this error seems to have been related to the video CD creation function in the Nero program. Any ideas how I can at least salvage the data on that machine?     - My computer sometimes freezes coming out of standby (attempt #2). I first posted the following message here 6 days ago, but to my surprise, this received no responses at all. The problem my message describes continues to recur, so I'll try posting this again to bring it back to the "top of the stack". Any clues anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated. ~~~~~~~ begin original message ~~~~~~~ Greetings, group. I've been experiencing an annoying problem with my Windows 2000: I usually put my computer in "Standby" mode at night to kill fan and disk noise without wiping out contents of RAM. I prefer standby over shut-down because the computer can be shut-down and re-started MUCH faster that way. (About 2 seconds to shut down and 10 seconds to start up, as opposed to several minutes for each if I use shut-down.) The problem is, sometimes (about 20% of the time) when I push the "On" button to come out of standby mode, the computer freezes. The video doesn't come on (the monitor pilot light stays orange instead of going green), and the system doesn't respond to the keyboard. I have to push the Reset button and re-boot. When I check the event logs, there is nothing there for the initial attempt to come out of standby. It shows various services starting up after pushing Reset and rebooting, but it's as if the initial restart attempt never happened.     - No defrag on files that admin hasn't permissions to I'm running Windows 2000 Professional, SP4, and almost always use a power user account. I mostly operate within a Unix environment provided by Cygwin. In accordance with a common Unix practice, all my power user files are set to be accessible by only the user. However, this prevents those files from being defragged. After much searching and experimentation, I found in JkDefrag's documentation that the account under which defragging is run should have "full control" over files being defragged. I've tried the Win2K's built-in defragger, JkDefrag, and Ultra Defragmenter (UD). For JkDefrag and UD, I also tried boot-time defragging. UD requires specification of a comma-separated list of file patterns, to which I added an asterisk (without quotes). None of these help. I confirmed that the fragmented files could be defragged after using the Unix Bash command line interpeter in Cygwin to open up file access to everyone ("go+rwx" in Unix lingo). Other people, however, haven't needed to do this, including people who have finangled file access permissions even more un-Windows-ily than I have. So I'm not sure what could be the cause of the problem. 1. What other likely causes could there be? 2. Is there a defragger that is known to circumvent these file access permissions problems? Freeware is preferrable, since this is an ancient laptop for which investment is questionable. It might be better to simply run it into the ground (or until my patience is exhausted), then get a new laptop with twice the drive capacity I need so that I can ghost the drive between two partitions instead of this troublesome and nonideal defragging. On the current laptop, ghosting might be problematic because it only has USB1 (haven't researched yet whether the CD burner is on IDE). 3.     - 98SE upgrade to 2000 I have several machines that have 98SE on them. One in particular didn't get heavy use, but now the 14 yr. old is doing his best to give it a workout (ASUS A7V600X-E Sempron2400 w/ 512 PC3200DDR). I have a copy of 2000 Pro Upgrade here that I was going to use quite a few years back, but never did (went with XP for that machine) and I was considering putting it on his machine for a number of reasons (like I want to add NAS to my wired router and I want to buy Office 2007 Student to put on there for him and etc.) I am aware that a clean install is always best, but in this instance I do not have the time to invest in starting him over from scratch so I may do an upgrade as the next best thing. His C drive is 13G and he currently uses about 8.5G for windows and programs... his graphics files and such are on D. How much further will 2000 gobble up his C drive as an Upgrade? How about space needed to put Office Student 07 over 97Pro? Will it install to a FAT (was 98SE FAT32?) drive? I would like to keep all the machines in the house using the same file format and so my XP machines are also FAT. Does 2000 have the same Restore Points as XP Home? Anything else I'm not thinking of?     - Need Help Recovering Deleted Files I have done and add/remove of a program from my Win 2000 Pro computer. After I did this I was told in there are a set of user config files in the c:\program files\(app)\(app subfolder)\(user config files) that I need. There is nothing in the recycle bin.     - Group Policy Not Working for just one user... We have a group policy configured on our network that includes a folder redirection policy. Basically it redirects everyone's My Documents folder to a central folder under their name on our server. This makes sure everything gets backed up. We've had this folder redirection in place for the past 7 years and it's worked fine. We discovered today however that one of our users My Documents folders has never been redirected. We only found this out after we formatted this particular user's computer and they ended up with no documents. Their my documents folder on the server was basically empty. Whilst we can't retrieve the data and this is no major problem I'm concerned as to why the folder redirection for this particular user has failed. The user account has been in use for I'd say the last 5 years and many users have been created since and everyone elses account redirects fine. Locally the user is a member of the Power Users group, as is everyone else. All the other group policy settings are working fine - standard desktop icons, standard start menu, standard wallpaper etc. Can anyone suggest some reasons for the issue with the my documents redirection?     - Slow boot, but only in safe mode This is the opposite of what one would expect. That is, if one is experiencing a slow boot, going to safe mode would be relatively quicker. I'm experiencing the opposite. I boot up in the normal amount of time (which is never fast enough, but that's a different issue). It is only when I boot up in safe mode that I actually fall asleep waiting for it to boot up. The task manager shows a sparse list of processes, as one expects of safe mode.     - Popup comment during dragging files Yesterday I restored an earlier registry using ERNDT, from 4 days ago. Have done this before, never had a problem. But since yesterday, it seems to have caused a minor problem. Had this problem a long ago in W98 but forgot the solution.     - OffLine Synch question User was getting a message that some files could not synchronize. Tech did some troubleshooting. In the course of events the Tech turned off (unchecked ) "Enable Offline Files" Files are now gone. User is quite upset since the unsychronized files are now gone. Which of these icons can I remove 'without' removing the entire program. I still want to access them through 'Programs, Start' and the desktop tray but not on the desktop screen. Cheers.     - Terminal Services sessions timeout? I used to remotely administrate a Windows 2000 server with TightVNC. With TightVNC, I could log onto the server and start processes that run in DOS windows, lock the server and disconnect. I could then reconnect later on to the same session. Since the server was rebuilt, I am having to use Remote Desktop from a Windows XP client to administer the server. The problem with this is that it appears that these Remote Desktop sessions are timing out. I say this because when I remotely connect to the server I find no evidence that the processes that run in DOS windows are still running. The DOS windows have disappeared, and when I start the processes they begin a catch-up process that would not be necessary had they been running continuously. I have tried reinstalling TightVNC as a system service, but when I reboot the server and attempt a connection, I am informed that the server does not have a password set and until one is set I won't be able to connect to it. This is spite of having set the password! Any thoughts on the solution to either the Remote Desktop or TightVNC problem would be most gratefully received!     - RECOVER DLL FROM ORIGINAL DISK When I start add/remove programs from control panel, I get the error: object does not support this property or method, res.//sp3res/default.hta, line 82. I was told to check validity of mshtml.dll. Mine has a date time stamp of 12/10/0712:38 pm and a size of 2,642 KB. I run version 5 build 2195 service pack 4. Is this correct?     - XP & 2K on same machine What size for each partition should I make on an 80 Gig HDD for both Win2K pro & XP operating systems? I'm thinking about 15 gig for each with extended partitions for data of equal sizes for each. I would like to keep the os partitions a small as possible. I have a Packard-Bell Easynote Laptop F0336-V-089 with Intel Celeron MCU 440 @ 1.86 GHZ processor with 2 gig of memory. I loaded Win2K but ran into driver problems so I guess I will have to load XP. I would like to still use my old HP flatbed scanner that won't run with XP so I guess I will need to load Win2K also. Any suggestions to achieve this will be appreciated.     - My computer sometimes freezes coming out of standby. Greetings, group. I've been experiencing an annoying problem with my Windows 2000: I usually put my computer in "Standby" mode at night to kill fan and disk noise without wiping out contents of RAM. I prefer standby over shut-down because the computer can be shut-down and re-started MUCH faster that way. (About 2 seconds to shut down and 10 seconds to start up, as opposed to several minutes for each if I use shut-down.) The problem is, sometimes (about 20% of the time) when I push the "On" button to come out of standby mode, the computer freezes. The video doesn't come on (the monitor pilot light stays orange instead of going green), and the system doesn't respond to the keyboard. I have to push the Reset button and re-boot. When I check the event logs, there is nothing there for the initial attempt to come out of standby. It shows various services starting up after pushing Reset and rebooting, but it's as if the initial restart attempt never happened. When Windows 2000 Server Support ends in 2010, we don't expect any security
patch/fix for it.. right?

Can we still request Microsoft for Patch/fix for Windows 2000 and pay for it?

When support ends I would expect that patch/fix would also end just like
with Windows NT but ask them here.
