    - Windows suddently won't start I just swapped mobos and did a repair install on Windows 2000. After than finished I applied SP4, loaded the nVidia drivers and the ATI video driver. Everything seemed to be running fine. From the desktop I changed the color depth from 16 to 32 bpp and it hung on a blank screen after I said OK to make the change. Before restarting, I pulled the power plug to the floppy drive (I had never connected the ribbon cable), plugged in the case fan and closed up the case. Now Windows won't start at all. It hangs on the splash screen at about 3/4 of the blocks in the progress bar in a normal startup. Tried to start the last good configuration and in safe mode and it won't start there either. Hangs on the "starting Windows" screen. It seems unlikely to me that any of the above changes could have caused this problem. I am stumped and need some expert help. Thanks.     - Opening and saving files In the good old days (up until about three weeks ago), when I went to open or save a file, the dialog box would display the existing folders in alphabetical order, followed by files in alphabetical order. Now, with some programs, the dialog box shows the files and folders (in the list view) in what appears to be in random order. While the dialog box is in view, if I click on View Menu, choose Details, then click on the Name column, the folders will appear first in alpha order, followed by the files in alpha order, just as I want. But the next time I try opening or saving a file, the dialog box doesn't remember my last settings, but reverts to showing files and folders in random order. None of the Office programs (Word, Excel, Access) have this problem. But my audio editing program, Cool Edit Pro, and my picture viewer, Irfan, both have the problem. FWIW, I use a program called System Mechanic, and one of its tools compacts the registry. I really can't correlate the problem to when I last compacted the registry. But since I wasn't anticipating the problem and thus not looking for it, SM may have caused it. Any suggestions for curing it?     - Open Flash USB folder like XP? There's only one feature from XP that I wish Windows 2000 had - and that is automatically opening up a folder view of a newly inserted USB flash drive.     - Electonic Microscope Hardware: Celestron 44300 Source: http://www.celestron.com/c2/product.php?CatID=31&ProdID=451 Lost Scanners and Cameras in Control Panel after 30 days after BSOD and now the box can't find New Hardware, the camera. SFC no joy. Installed on second box camera worked okay, but received BSOD after an hour. Did not lose Scanners and Cameras, but setup an I386 folder in %systemroot% and changed the registry to run it w/o the CD.     - Win 2K workstation recovery Hi, could someone suggest the best way of recovering a dying 2k workstation. The pc currently boots up, but hangs on the windows screen. It does go into safe mode though. It looks like symantec applications are causing the issue, but i cannot uninstall them, as the installer service is not running and will not start. I could really use the config from this box as it is used for a bespoke application, The pc has a unique setup, which my predecessor did not document the build of!! Currently i have no win 2k media, however i may be able to lay my hands on some. Woulkd the best option be to try and recover the current install??     - creating a bootable USB flash drive I recently purchased a nifty 8 gig USB flash drive, and cloned it from a minimal windows 2000 h/d so as to make it what I *thought* would be a bootable USB drive. My PC allows for this option, and I did set it to do that. I used the following command to create the USB drive: xcopy e:\*.* f:\*.* /s/e/c/h/o/y, where E: is my H/D that has a minimal windows 2000 on it, and F: is the 8 gig USB flash drive. The copy took a while but finished OK, and I inspected it windows explorer and it looks A-OK. But when I try to boot from it, even before anything happens, I get a black screen with a message saying something about a pariion table and no boot sequence - what is wrong here? I can follow the same procedure (xcopy ...) where my target is a brand new, but formatted h/ d, and it creates me a nice BOOTABLE h/d, cloned from my minimal win2k h/d.     - shutdown, restart, logoff shutdown, restart and logoff do not work if following this path: START - SHUTDOWN - REASTART, SHUTDOWN, LOGOFF CURRENT USER. It will shut down manually in about 2 seconds, but I know repeated "hard shutdowns" are not good for my PC. Installed is WIN2000 SP4 O.S. I was told it was prolly a setup in my BIOS , but I went through that yesterday and could not find a place for shutdown or restart. Any info will be helpful, the more detailed the better.     - CD's missing Sorry about the prior post - please ignore A moment of madness or was it just the onset of something worse made me look at errorsmart which promised to speed up my computer something drastic - yes it showed that there was more than 1000 errors which could be corrected if I paid the dues - Well I did and promptly my favourite video editor was not available and I could not reinstall it. The makers of the editor and I went into a lenghty email session with no end result. Other things on my computer bothered me. Help came in the way of a 10GB image of the OS partition dated before the purchase of the magic program mentioned above. Hi presto - trouble cured. I installed the update of the editor and all was thought to be well - however Roxio 7.0 seemed to have been damaged. Not to worry, reinstalled and 'hp'; my beautiful 700 GB SATA raid array was missing as was also the CD's. Even the Disk Manager showed no signs of anything else but my 2x 200 GB disks. Saved the registry and looked for any instance of errorsmart. Also uninstalled Roxio and did a similar deed to that in the registry. I also cleaned out any occurence of Roxio in my folders and partitions. That cleared up the trouble only to recur on a subsequent installation of Roxio, this time the CD' were missing but the raid array had reappeared. Finally installed W2K from disk, that would have cleared any trouble in registry, hitched the Image to that which worked fine. Updated bits in Document and Settings from a newer Image and back to normal, I thought. Installed Roxio and again I had lost the CD's. I have roxio 10 but it will not work on W2K - so what might you do. Buy and install XP Pro (remember Roxio 7 did work on this computer) or do you have some powerful magic to help me, please.     - Temporarily Disable Power Management I'm in the process of updating the BIOS and Embedded Controller programs on a ThinkPad (required in this case as part of a miniPCI wireless upgrade). The BIOS upgrade went fine, but I aborted the embedded controller upgrade when the final message before the actual flash came up: "Exit now if Power Management is enabled." I take it this means ACPI. To figure out how to disable it, I checked both device manager and the BIOS settings. Device manager shows various subcomponents whose drivers can be uninstalled. The BIOS has a "Power" category, with subcomponents where it looks like you can only make adjustments to their operating peramemters. I could find no reference to it in Services under Administrative tools. Is there a "non-segmentized" listing for this and is there a way to just temporarily disable it?     - HELP Urgent: Update Rollup 1, Win2K SP4 MSDTC Error After installing the above on our exchange 2003 server, I am receiving event 4099 as follows: The run-time environment was unable to initialize for transactions rquired to support transactional components. Make sure that MSDTC is running (DtcGetTransactionManagerEx(): hr=0x8004d01b. I am also receiving a few event 4156 MSDTC errors. String message: Session idle timeout over, tearing down the session. I have searched for error 4099 and everything I have found relates to clusters. This is a standalone server. I understand this roll-up include MS04-012 a cumulate update for RPC/DCOM which seems to be the issue. Can anyone help resolve this issue or should I uninstall the update roll-up?     - can not log in I changed the local security policy on windows 2000 and the next day when I went to log in as the Administrator I got this message saying "the local security policy of this computer does not allow you to log in interactivly." I have tried logging in under safe mode and the guest account but the guest account was disabled and the safe mode didn't work either. Now I can't log in to my computer at all.     - Missing Administrator Level Account I recently received a used laptop with a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro, and no applications. I'm having a problem with it in that there is no Administrator account set up (I thought this was supposed to happen automatically during installation of the OS). Since I can only access the machine with User level privileges, I can't figure out how to create one, since the option to do this under Users and Passwords is grayed out. How do I fix this?     - Windows update in windows 2000 not working? I have two servers in my network that I am having a problem patching. I run windows update on them, and it comes up with the list of patches that need to be applied. I say go ahead and it fails on all of them and says it needs a restart, so I restart and the same thing happens. NOTES: 1, the "download size" of the patches is 0kb so apperently during one attempt or another they were downloaded? If so to where and how can I delete the information that they downloaded and get those again? 2, On one of the servers I decided to manually download and install the patches, and that worked except for 4 patches KB941693, KB944338, KB945553, KB948590. On these 4 patches the patch runs, hits and error that says access is denied (access to what I do not know) and then it displays a text box saying it is cleaning up the patch, then it closes, and then it reboots my server, which is really annoying that it doesn't give any sort of warning it is going to do that.     - ftp throught windows 2003 firewall I have a win 2003 SP2 server with IIS, FTP installed. I have unchecked the "Anonymous" authentication for FTP so users will be required to enter their id/pwd. This works fine without the firwall running. But as soon as I turn the firewall on, the user will be prompted for thier id/pwd and after a few seconds, it errors with: 425: Can't open data connection I have allowed exceptions on the firewall for ports 20 and 21.     - No desktop/explorer.exe in restricted accounts, OK in Administrator Hi, I have read many post there was no desktop/explorer.exe after login at all, but no similar to my case. I have W2KPRO SP4 with all updates. I can login and work with Administrator account as usual, nothing wrong, But if I am logged in into my usual restricted account, only clear screen, no icons, no start menu, only CtrlAltDel works. According task manager no explorer.exe running. Explorer is set as a shell, shdocvw.dll is in system32 folder, all accounts have at least read access to winnt tree, so does everyone. The same occured when I created as a test fresh new restricted ( power user ) account. I can run programs by Runas / profile /user:username "command line", using profile of affected account. Well, except Iexplore or Maxthon 1.5 as IE frontend. the former does not launch at all, the latter crashes soon. FF or Opera works fine. All other programs by runas seem to work fine too.     - (OT) Laptop Driver Installation I have inexplicably convinced myself that I can successfully install a miniPCI wireless card in my Thinkpad laptop. I think I've researched the problem enough so that I know what the pitfalls are and what needs to be installed (certain other driver and BIOS upgrades must be in place), but, recalling the installation of the Linksys PCI adapter in the desktop I'm using now, the instructions insisted on installing the driver first before inserting the card. Lenovo gives no such advice one way or the other, so I'm wondering if it makes a difference. The immediate question relates to the wireless card, but perhaps I can broaden the question to ask whether, as a general rule, drivers for newly added hardware components in PCs are supposed to be installed prior to a new hardware component, or if it depends on the particular type of hardware, or whether a minimally compatible driver is already installed, or if in fact it varies on a case by case basis. Dunno what the heck is wrong. Last time it was okay. Even when I downloaded ISO images (over 700MB sizes) it was okay. Now ... every browser gives me the "stop and wait, wait, wait" thing. Is there something to do with registry or TCPIP setting? I haven't do anything about those two, but can't guarantee if there's any trogan/ virus that has altered the settings. How to check? QUICKTIME... etc... Along with every single MP3 file on my hard drive. Not very helpful.     - DHCP Redundant Configuration Question Hello folks, We've got a domain that has about 120 DHCP clients. We've got two Win2K DCs. Until recently, all of our DHCP was handled by the second domain controller. I modified the setup to provide some DHCP redundancy and have some questions. Here is the current setup: DC1 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.157 - 10.1.5.254 DC2 Scope: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.254 Exclusions: 10.1.5.60 - 10.1.5.156 The overlapping scopes and mutually exclusive exclusion lists were set up based on a recommendation in TechNet DHCP best practices. This basically leaves half of range on each DHCP server. With the current setup, each DHCP server has 97 available addresses to hand out which, I know, is not enough for the 120 DHCP clients. The hope is that it would be enough to get us through a crunch if one of the servers went down. Until I can get additional IP space allocated, I will have to live with that setup. I do have some questions about this setup that some of you may be able to answer: - Is there a chance a client will not be able to get an address under normal operations? For example, if the scope on one server fills up and the client happens to hit that server, will it get denied and give up? - Is there any better way of setting this up without changing the IP range?     - Strange Mouse Problem I'm been using with great success for many years a Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 optical mouse, with the receiver plugged into a PS2 port (via a USB/PB2 adapter) on the rear of the computer. (Don't ask why I didn't use a spare USB connection back there, because I don't remember.) Recently, after using the computer an hour or so, the mouse stops working, like its batteries were weak, but they aren't. I've use Control Panel to uninstall and reinstall it. It will work for a while, then the pointer motion gets "sticky," and finally stop working. The really strange part is that if I plug a corded mouse into a USB port, the wireless Microsoft one starts working. Any suggestions, other than leaving the corded one plugged in? I am experimenting with plugging the receiver into the USB port, but it's puzzling why things that had been working right for so long no longer do.     - Strange mouse problem I'm been using with great success for many years a Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 optical mouse, with the receiver plugged into a PS2 port (via a USB/PB2 adapter) on the rear of the computer. (Don't ask why I didn't use a spare USB connection back there, because I don't remember.) Recently, after using the computer an hour or so, the mouse stops working, like its batteries were weak, but they aren't. I've use Control Panel to unstall and reinstall it. It will work for a while, then get sticky, and finally stop working. The really strange part is that if I plug a corded mouse into a USB port, the wireless Microsoft one starts working.     - Older PC slows down with USB 2.0 printer Hello, I added a USB 2.0 PCI card to an older PC to accomodate a new Canon USB 2.0 inkjet printer. The card installed fine and is working, but here's the problem. All it takes is for the printer to be turned on, and the PC becomes very slugginsh. Running HDtach shows about 40mbps (on an Ultra66 Promise controller) while it runs at 58mbps when the printer is turned off. Why would the USB device cripple the PC? I've been in the BIOS to see if there's anything, but for now all I did is disable the legacy (onboard) 1.1 USB controller. Any thoughts appreciated.     - Thumbnail View capability missing from Win 2000 Explorer. I have two PCs, both running W2K Build 2195 (i.e. SP4 or whatever). On one PC, Win Explorer behaves fine: - Menu item "View" lists Large Icons, Small Icons, List, Details, and Thumbnails. - Selecting Thumbnail works just fine: thumbs.db gets created and .JPG file entries display TNs. - IE 5.5 is installed. On the other PC, thumbnail capability is completely absent: - "View" has only Large Icons, Small Icons, List, and Details. - Newsnet experts say to R-click on a folder, and on the context menu's General tab, activate a "Thumbnail checkbox". There is NO such checkbox. The only checkboxes are Read-Only and Hidden. - I also tried Run-ning that install-THUMBVW.DLL thing and Restart-ed the system. No dice. - IE 6 is installed. (TweakUI is installed on both systems--altho' its UI has no About, so don't know what version it is.) So what's the problem? Some difference in IE 6 vs.5.5?     - Copying a print file to a network computer. I've been sending a print file (.prn) to a local, parallel-port printer by simply copying the file to LPT1 via a batch file. I now want to send the same file to a printer which is attached to the network via a print server. How can I do that in a batch file? I have Windows 2000 SP4 and over the weekend my application screens and user
areas have all lost thier font. It now displays symbols (like in the system
information area) instead of the standard english. All of my icons are still
in english and can read them with out a problem but it is all of the other
areas that have changed. Even when booting the "Starting Windows display
that states please wait is in symbol form.

Has anyone ever seen this before? How can I correct it without formating
and reloading the drive?
