    - Unable to add a win-xp (sp-2) client machine to the domain (i.e. win-2003) I am getting an error message "NETWORK PATH NOT FOUND "when I am tryin to add a win-xp (sp-2) client machine to the domain (i.e. win-2003). Here is my network setup ISP---->ADSL/Modem---->Router---->Switch----->DNS Servers/SAP-Server Client Machines DNS Server IP-Address (192.168.10.2) Default Gateway (192.168.10.6) Pref DNS (192.168.10.2) Alt DNS (192.168.10.6) CLIENT Machines The ip-address range as-per our DNS is (192.168.10.1 -to 192.168.10.151) The Default Gateway of the client Machine is (192.168.10.6) Preffered DNS (192.168.10.2) Alternate DNS(192.168.10.6) Here is the scenario which I am facing :- the client machines are abl to access Internet,they are also able to access the SAP Application from the SAP-Server and do the programming stuffs & Users are able t login into their Network Login Area(i.e Roaming Profile) on any of th client machines which was created on DNS-Server ,but client machine are not able to ping the DNS-Server and they are not able to ping th SAP-Server. From the Client Machines we are able to do Remote Desktop Logon o SAP-Server (192.168.10.7),but we are unable to ping it and also th DNS(192.168.10.2). And I am unable to add any new client in the DNS,I am getting erro message "Network Path Not Found" WINS is enabled on the DNS File and Printer Sharing is enabled nslookup is giving me error- "Default Server Unknown" Please Help Me........     - Increasing size of task bar Windows 2000 SP4. I drag the upper edge of the taskbar up so that it occupies two rows. I was thinking that my tasks on the taskbar would occupy two rows so that each one is wider, and I can see the full filename. Nada, doesn't happen. The quick launch buttons occupy an entire row of the two rows. I'm (figuratively) smacking my forehead against the display. I have to increase the height of taskbar to three rows in order to get two rows for my tasks. Is there anyway to prevent the quick launch buttons from hogging and wasing an entire row of space?     - CD writer always hangs when i use it Hi I have a Dell Optiplex with Win2k Pro. The CDRW is TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-H653A. Everytime I drag and drop a file to the drive, it hangs (the file is copied but I am not able to eject the CD). I need to disable the drive at Device Manager, eject the CD, and re-enable it again.     - Replacing hard drives and resizing I have a HP DL360 G3 with 2 * drives in a raid 1 config on a 2003 server. There is little space left and I want to upgrade the drives. The raid is handled by the built in smart array 5i controller Is it be possible to remove 1 drive and replace with larger drive and once the raid has rebuilt remove the second drive with a larger drive and again raid rebuilt.     - Print Processor problem, HPXPP4wm, We are having trouble with some HP LJ 4250s printers that are networked,They're using a PCL 6 driver. The print server is a Win2k server. The printers, Print Processor are set to "HPZPP4wm", by default. But over the last 2 months, users printing multi page jobs are having them come out last page first and they canâ??t print using legal paper from any tray. If I switch printerâ??s Print Processor to â??WinPrintâ?? everything works fine. The problem is after several weeks the â??Print Processorâ?? resets back to "HPZPP4wm" and weâ??re back to square one.     - Changing Windows 2000 member computer's name... Hello, I have a Windows 2000 sever, that is a NT 4 Domain member. I have to change the computer name by using the minimum amount of administrative effort and trying to maintain the group/user id's information. I was told that renaming a NT domain member requires you to create a new computer account and also to leave the domain, restart, rejoin the domain and restart again. I'm concerned that any domain id's/groups that were in local groups may be lost, even though we're adding the server back into the same domain. I'm also thinking about file/web permissions from the domain. Is there a way to retain the SID information ? Do we really need to remove the server from the domain before changing the name?     - Changing motherboards, now Win2000 CD won't boot for installation I've switched from a real old, Asus P2B, motherboard to a slightly newer one, Asus P4PE. My Win2000 CD, which has worked many times in the past, now when I try to boot up to install Win2000, will go through the first screen that lists all the components and then stop with these words: Boot from Atapi CD-ROM: no emulation. I can boot up in DOS using the Hirens CD. And I've tried to install Win2000 via DOS, and I can get partway through the installation, but when the installation starts copying all the files onto the hard drive...some of them won't copy and so I can't get a good installation. I've checked this Win2000 CD on my other computer and it will go through the installation without this bad files problem.     - corrupt files in W2K system I'm having issues with a Win2000Pro SP4 installation (workstation). I had some files corrupt on the hard drive and ended up running a repair - chkdsk /f and getting the hard drive to read correctly now. Win2KPro wouldn't boot. The drive is still ok - I'm dual booting into other OS's just fine. However, it appears the corruption was in/on a section of the drive that had the 2KPro system files. It starts to boot into 2K and goes to the black screen with the white boxes across the bottom and hangs on the second little box. That part appears to be past bootldr and etc. I tried to do an inplace upgrade-repair of the partition and got a parallel install into the WINNT directory. The original is in the WINDOWS directory (since it was an upgrade from Win98SE). My question is - what file(s) can I copy to replace the bad file in the WINDOWS directory so that installation of Win2K can boot up? There's a lot of programs/settings/etc I really want to save and possibly upgrade into WinXPPro without doing a clean install? Thanks so much, in advance!     - Isn't 003 Router the Gateway not the DHCP ip's 1. Isn't '003 Router' the Gateway not the DHCP internal ip nic? 2. Do you know of any issues if I use more of the scopes options? 3.     - Problem with a script execution for stopping services. Hi, I have a problem with a little script that stops four services. When I test the script in a command line, the script runs correctly, and it stops the services. The problem is when I schedule the script with the at command, the scheduler have an error, and the services don't stopped. Any idea?     - disabling device per HW profile, but option greyed out ! I need to disable certain devices in a particular HW profile. In a normal situation this is a no-brainer, Device Manager has a 3- way scroll-box with options to enable/disable/enable in this HW profile for each device. However, that option has been deactivated (is greyed-out, and the scroll-box non functional) for some of the devices which I want to disable :=( The only possibility apparently remaining would be to remove the device(s) completely from system, which is /not/ what I want !!! Please tell how to reenable the choice - I assume it's a flag to reset somewhere in the registration information for the affected device(s). Alternately, may I use "devcon" to permanently disable a device from the current HW profile /only/ ? Or, could I find and nuke the appropriate bit(s) in the devices' .inf installer file(s) ? Please help ! I know what I'm doing disabling these devices, in fact I have done it previously but, the greyed-out status is new, probably post device driver updates.     - Best NTFS Cluster Size for boot drive? My Windows 2000 Pro laptop has a c: partition and a separate D: partition.for data. I've been searching for a reference on the best cluster size for a Win2K partition, but can't find anything. The C: partition is a 12G NTFS partition with a 512 byte cluster size.     - Cannot copy file_name: Access is Denied I have a user that tries copying files into a shared folder and she gets: "Cannot copy <file_name): Access is Denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." I've tried taking ownership, which allows ME to move the files. I give her ownership and she still can't complete the above task. The disk is not full or write protected and the user has the appropriate share/ntfs perms. Any suggestions? There have only been a handful of errors but I like to know what everything is and what everything means in my event logs!     - lousy dvd read speed I have TWO windows 2000 machines, an old p4 and a new amd 5600 with sata. The problem is that the speed reading a dvd on the new machine is about 3 times longer than the speed reading the same dvd (using the SAME DVD READER) with the old p4 system. Both systems have dma if available ticked, and the newer system has sata and the IDE DVD READER ONLY (no other IDE Devices). The lights on the old machine are flickering very fast, but, the lights on the new machine drag on. I searched through control panel/hardware/devices on both systems and I don't see ANY difference. If I connect an IDE harddrive to the new machine, and transfer data between the sata and the IDE harddrive, the speed is lighting fast.     - persistent "ghost" USB device? I made the mistake a few days ago of shutting down my windows 2000 PC with a USB harddrive still connected and powered up. After the PC shut down, I disconnected the USB h/d and powered it off. Now, everytime I boot up the PC, windows 2000 informs me that it "found new hardware" "USB device", and then "error installing device" and I get a yellow question mark in the control panel/system/hardware/ device Now, I tried booting up with the USB h/d connected and powered up, and it recognizes it OK, but, it still tries to install that darn "ghost" USB device also and reports the failure. So how do completely remove whatever it is that is causing windows 2000 to think there is a USB device it needs to install. I am sure it is a "ghost" device somewhere, because, even when I disconnect ALL usb devices and boot up, it still tries to install a USB device and fails. Where is windows 2000 getting this from?     - Diagnosing Blue Screens & Re-boots Hi Folks; I have an old Compaq DL380 G2 server that I'm using as my firewall. All it has on it is Windows 2000 Advanced Server & ISA Server 2004. It's worked well for years - never an issue. I manage it remotely via Terminal Services. Recently the server has been re-starting itself about once a week or so. This is done by the server management software (auto recovery). It checks the machine to ensure it's responding and if it doesn't get a reply for 5 minutes it forces a re-start of the system. Because this is a rack mount server I'm never in front of it to see it happen.     - Getting Wrong Profile We have one old Windows 2000 Pro (that we use once a quarter to run a database routine that we haven't yet moved to a WinXP computer). When I login (as JohnDoe), it doesn't give me my normal desktop/etc. When I look in c:\documents and setting, there are two folders. One is "JohnDoe" (which has all the correct stuff in it), the other is "JohnDoe.Computer05" (which is the one it's loading when I log in as JohnDoe).     - After update KB944338, ASP server fails After installing the latest Windows Update, KB944338, my local development server is no longer functioning. I am running Personal Web Manager on Windows 2000. I am just a lowly front-end web developer still doing all my server-side coding in classic ASP/VBScript. (If it ain't broke...) Anyway, I've never had a problem before, but after installing the lastest vbscript.dll-related update, I now get this error whenever I try to access any page on my local server: Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0201' Invalid Default Script Language The default script language specified for this application is invalid. And absolutely nothing I have tried has worked thus far. I tried uninstalling the update, but while that removes the new vbscript.dll from system32 and replaces it with the old one, it hasn't fixed the problem. I know it's not related to the default script language setting; that still is set to VBSCRIPT, just like it's always been. Even if it wasn't, all my pages start with <% @LANGUAGE="VBSCRIPT" %>. I also tried re-registering vbscript.dll, but it didn't help. I am really not well-versed in IIS or DLLs or anything, so please be gentle, but if anyone can help me here, I would be most appreciative. I tried every route with Microsoft directly, but they keep telling me that since I'm still using Windows 2000, they can't offer support or advice without charging me lots and lots of money. Help!     - Defrag strategy to extend disk life I looked into defragging utilities in order to minimize the wear on my hard drive. This differs from most people's main motivation, which is to improve the speed of data acquisition from the hard drive. For me, that is a beneficial side effectg. So far, I've found that freeware doesn't cut it. The short story is that they don't use the proper security privilege so as to be able to access and derag all files, regardless of the account to which they below. I ended up trialing Diskeeper, which seems quite awesome in that it defrags all the files that the freeware could not. It also defrags in the background, making use of otherwise lull times in CPU usage. In addition, the premier pro version supposedly has some intelligence which figures out which files you access most, and optimizes the access to them. Unfortunately, the background defragger seems to go against my reason for defragging, which is to minimize disk wear rather than speeding up file access. The background defragging seems to keep the hard drive perpetually spinning, even in the absence of activity that would cause defragmentation. So basically, I'm going to forgo that feature and possibly continue comparing commercial defraggers. Are there any considerations that I may be overlooking in this decision? In the absence of background defragging, would once a week be frequent enough for defragging? I don't use the machine for video, audio, or any kind of media. Just plain old surfing and email.     - scheduled task can not access shared drive This is actually on a Windows 2003 server but I didn't see it among the options. I've created a batch file on server A to generate a report and copy it to a shared drive on server B. When I log onto server A and run the batch file it works; when I use the task scheduler to run the batch it fails. A coworker suggested using the unc path rather than the mapped drive letter designation but that didn't help - all that did was generate a "CMD does not support UNC paths as current directories" error message. I have a hunch that the problem is because the shared drive is not recognized unless the user physically logs onto the box. Is that the case and is there a way to work around this?
