    - SP4 problems For years, my W2K with SP4 ran okay. Last week, following a virus attack, I reformatted c: and reinstalled W2K. To make a very long story short, without SP4, webpages open fast. With SP4, they are virtually impossible to open, with either of my browsers, Sea Monkey and IE. I got the SP4 update right from microsoft. File name is SP4express_EN.exe, size 589K, version 1.16.120.0, June 20, 2003. Odd thing: before all my problems started, I distinctly remember that if I went to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, there were multiple entries related to SP4; maybe they were later patches to SP4. When I reinstall SP4 today, and then go to remove it, there is just a single entry. Am I missing some patches or other SP4 updates that could be causing my problem? From googling the problem, I notice that other have had this problem with SP4; when they returned to SP3, the problem disappeared.     - EventID 7023 Microfost Search Service I am getting a persistent error: EventID 7023 every time I reboot my Windows 2000 server. The details are: ------------------------------------------------------- Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Computer: WIN2000_SERVER Description: The Microsoft Search service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. ----------------------------------------------- It is not a 'timing' issue as I can't manually start the Search Service after bootup has completed either.     - HD formatting problem I have purchased a Samsung SATA 160GB HD to be added to an existing windows 2000 having one SATA 80 GB partitioned disk (2x40GB NTFS). I have partitioned the new HD in 2x80 NTFS but I can only format one partition. The other one refuses to be formatted. Then I created a single partition (1x160) but it refuses the format process too. I have used Paragon Hard Disk Manager 8.0 and also the Windows Format command. The funny thing is that Format starts formatting but ends with the "unable to complete the format" error message after what seems to be a normal formatting time. Any idea on what´s wrong?     - Blue Screen problem I received two blue screen messages this week, while the system was sitting idle. I have been running Windows 2000 with SP4 for quite some time, with no major problems. I ran extensive memory checks producing no errors. I did several virus scans with nothing found. I did several chkdsk's with no errors found. At the recommendation of the text on the blue screen, I disabled the cache memory in my BIOS settings. However, doing that caused the startup screen to stall out and I had to reset the cache memory. The error on the blue screen was: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR I have added no new hardware, and all things appear to operate fine. Any ideas on how to proceed from here?     - System time keeps going back 1 day I have a Windows 2000 server (it's not on a domain) whose system clock periodically goes back by one day. It's started happening more frequently, and is becoming a real problem. We have a freeware program that's supposed to synchronize it with one of the online time servers on a daily basis, but it won't let you control what time of day it does it, and it doesn't do it early enough in the day to avoid problems with some scheduled processes that we have. I tried turning on the Windows Time service, but it gives an error saying the time is more than 12 hours out of sync and won't adjust it. I tried putting a new setting in the registry to increase the amount of time out of sync it will allow, from information at microsoft.com, but it didn't work. I tried a couple other freeware programs that will allow you to sync the time automatically as often as you want (I was going to set it to 5 minutes), but they only change the time, and not the date.     - Error Code 31 - PLEASE HELP Hi. We had to rebuild Windows 2000 Server and then do a restore of system state from the most recent backup. That went great. but now we cannot get the CD rom to work. it sees it, but Error code 31 will not allow us to use it. I've tried the registry fix they keep saying but it WILL NOT WORK.     - Dial-up connections with multiple users I setup a pc with a dial-up connection to the internet and all worked fine. Then I setup multiple user accounts and ensured the dial-up shortcut displayed on the desktop for all users - but now the connection doesn't work.     - Domain Controller Issues - Urgent Help Due to some issues with a failed domain controller upgrade to new hardware, I am having an issue with my domain controllers. I demoted one of my DCs after this upgrade and had many issues. I restored the DC from backup, however now that DC does not appear in the Domain Controllers group under AD Users and Computers. My question is, can I just run DCPROMO again to make it a domain controller again. I have another DC that is functioning and is authenticating users and allowing for Exchange mail delivery just fine. The only issue I have is that when our users change their passwords, through Netware, and try to sync them with windows, their Windows accounts keep getting locked out. Can anyone offer any suggestions here. When I did my restore more then a week ago, I did not do an Authoritative Restore as I did not know I should do that.     - Blue screen system halted message on start up Recently had to replace a failed mobo and do a repair install. All went well and I've got all the service packs updated. The system runs fine if it starts but about every 3rd start up attempt (I only use this machine 2 or 3 times a week), as soon as Windows starts to load (after the main screen), I'll get a blue screen with the message "system halted, contact your hardware vendor." I haven't changed any components other than the mobo (an Epox 8KHA+ that was in my WinXP machine for several years). As noted, if Windows loads, the sytem runs fine with no indication of a problem. At first I thought my network card wasn't fully seated but I pulled it out and got the same error. I have 3 SDRAM sticks (2x256 and 1x512), a Radeon 9250 video card, 1 Seagate 80gig drive, 1 floppy and an HP CDRW.     - Symantec NetDetect scheduled task disabled I'm running Windows 2000 professional, SP4, with the corporate version of Symantec AntiVirus, full version 10.0.2.2000. When I log in as administrator, I see that one of the scheduled tasks is Symantec NetDetect, but it is disabled and has never run. I haven't found a way to show when the task was created.     - How to change Windows Explorer's default directory? In Windows Explorer, the Explorer Bar displays Folders. Every time I launch Explorer, "Local Disk (C:)" is selected and expanded, which I don't want. I want some other default location under My Computer to be expanded.     - Start Menu app is told to launch Maximized, but it launches Normal. I have had this problem sporadically for untold years in seemingly all versions of Windows. I have an app in my Start menu. If I right-click on it and look at its Properties, the Run field says "Maximized". Yet it launches in a Normal (Restored) window. If Windows is designed properly, this should be irrelevant, but I'll say it anyway, just in case: The thing I'm launching is ncpa.cpl (Network and Dial-Up Connections).     - Explorer hangs when adding scheduled task I am using Windows 2000 Professional, SP4. As a power user, I tried to add a scheduled task using the Scheduled Task Wizard. After the clicking Next on the 1st step, the Wizard hangs, and explorer.exe takes up 99% of the CPU. The only information I've found on the WWW and usenet is for Windows XP: 1) A general referral to generic troubleshooting for scheduled tasks. It doesn't seem to address the inability to create a scheduled task. http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-519894.php 2) A vague description of the problem at Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841846 The solution in (2) is related to hotfixes. Since Microsoft no longer supports Windows 2000, I don't expect any more hotfixes (correct me if I'm wrong). Hence, I need to understand the problem in detail, hope that the same cause applies to Windows 2000, and fix it myself. According to (2), the cause in XP is that I am logged in as a member of the local users group (not quite true, since the account a power user) and/or (not sure which!) the NTFS ACL permissions for the Users and Everyone groups have been removed for All Users' Start Menu. The article doesn't say *which* permissions. However, the permissions for All Users' Start Menu are as follows (best viewed in fixed width text): Everyone: Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read Power Users: Modify, Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read Users: Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read I'm not too keen on changing permissions, since they are set for a reason. As well, since I'm a power user, I'm not entirely sure that it is even the problem. Has anyone else run into this problem with Windows 2000 Pro SP4? How did you solve it?     - W2K SP4 dual boot problems I've been nursing along a W98 2ed (on C:) W2K SP4 ( on D:) dual boot system since Y2K. My back-up method involved ternary rotation of hard drive sets. This produces a working hard drive for C and D, a most recent individual back up for each, and a previous back-up of each. Backing up involves cloning the current drive's contents onto the oldest back-up drives, installing the recent clones into operation, and retiring the working drives to most recent back-up position. Every time I do this, I get some kind of problem. Usually this involves an inaccessible W2K or W98 OS. Repair usually involves using W2K setup disc set, to fixmbr (default) from the command console, then sys C: from W98 boot disk. I'm uncomfortable with DOS, so my ability to manipulate files is limited. Recently I found myself unable to produce a dual boot start-up screen. The Functional default was a direct boot into W98 without a boot option. With the assistance of a floppy loaded on boot with NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, BOOT.INI and BOOTSECT.DOS on it, I could generate a start-up menu with a valid W2K option, but an invalid W98 or Command Console option. This disk was created two years ago, when I had the same situation temporarily. I don't recall how the disk was created or how I dug myself out of the hole. I let it ride, booting daily for specific tasks only into W2K, until today when the W2K floppy boot disk displayed a disk read error. Simply loading the same files, with the same datestamps onto a floppy doesn't recreate a working floppy. (invalid system disk) Can anyone suggest how to fix the floppy 've been using as a crutch? I'm pissed off that the W2K disks can't be used as a simple boot disk, as my crutch did. I effectively have no access to the W2K OS or drive partition. Better still, can anyone suggest how to restore the dual boot? Should I use the W2K set-up to fixmbr of a specific hard drive, rather than a default? The BOOT.INI in non-functional setting reads as it always did in a functional set-up. My last W98 back-up still allows normal dual boot function when installed as C:. Direct file transfers (same datestamps) doesn't improve anything. Disk D W2k SP4 is NTSF, with two FAT32 data partitions. Disk C: W98 2ed is FAT32. RL Tag: Stack Overflow Tag: 562784

(Note the apostrophe following Fonts\; it's the folder name, not a typo on my part.) Yet when I tried navigating to that folder using Explorer, I couldn't find any subfolders of Fonts. I have Folder Options/View set to "Show hidden files and folders" and do NOT have the "Hide protected operating system files" box checked.     - Replacing the c: drive Due to the various problems described in my post of a few minutes ago, I'm ready to replace my c: drive. My system consists of a primary master drive partitioned as C, E and F, and a primary slave drive partitioned as D and G. My plan is to remove both these drives and install a new primary master, again partitioned as C, E, and F. Once I reinstall w2k and sp4, I'll put the old C/E/F drive in the primary slave position and copy the data from the E and F partitions onto the new E and F partitions. (There are no programs on the E and F partitions; just data I've created.) Then I'll reinstall all my programs on the new C drive and wherever possible copy their various settings from the corresponding folder locations on the old drive to the new one. (I realize that with the old drive moved to the slave position, the old C partition will become D, the old E will become G, and the old F will become H.) Once I'm done with this, I'll remove the old C/E/F drive and replace it with the old primary slave D and G. As an alternative, I could disconnect one of the two cd burners in the secondary channel and put the old C/E/F drive there; that way I don't have to remove the D/G drive from its primary slave position.     - Major Startup Problems Probably due to the win32.agent.cmn virus that got me earlier today, despite using several programs to remove it, including SpyBot, I can't boot properly, Once I get past the splash screen, I see the desktop and all the icons. But once all the startup items are loaded, I see a series of newly opening dialog boxes that say c:\WINNT\Syustem32\command.com. After dozens open within about 45 seconds, I get an Program Error dialog box that says "explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You need to restart the program." Hitting Cancel closes this box, but I'm left with original dozens of boxes. If I use Task Manager to try to close them, I eventually can (after about 5 minutes), but then I'm left with a blank, blue screen. No desktop icons and nothing along the bottom (Start, clock, quick launch, etc.). If I then press the Reset switch, after getting to a normal desktop the screen goes blank, as above. I don't know why all those command.com boxes don't open again. If I try starting in the Safe Mode, I'll get to a point where the screen is black, with the words Safe Mode in the four corners, and in the middle is a box that says "Please wait, windows is starting up..." That message remains for about four minutes, then disappears and just the black, blank screen remains. (No start button or desktop icons.) If I wait long enough the icons and task bar appear, along with a message that windows is in the safe mode. If I do nothing the message disappears and I'm back to the black screen with nothing along the bottom. Task Manager show that explorer.exe is not running. If I go to File/New Task (run) and type explorer.exe in the box, the desktop icon reappear for 8 seconds, then I get a Desktop dialog box saying that Windows is in the Safe Mode. If I click on OK, I see the desktop icons for 8 seconds until the Desktop dialog box reappears. This 8-second cycling back and forth will continue as long as I keep clicking on OK. If I don't, explorer.exe shuts down on its own and I'm again left with the blank screen. I've probably aggrevated the condition by first trying to repair W2k with the original installation disc. When that failed, out of desperation I tried a fresh reinstall; obviously without success. I'm about ready to take the drastic step of replacing the hard drive, because the problems seem so overwhelming. I discuss my plan in the post following this one.     - Unable to Copy and Paste We have a windows 2000 server with SP4 and all the latest patches running Citrix Metaframe XP. The problem is rather odd, here is a scenario: I had a zip file I wanted to extract and move to the Desktop. I created a folder named tools. I extracted the files to a directory where I wanted to keep them for future use. I then tried to copy the files from that folder to the tools folder on the desktop. When I try to move the files I get no error it just doesn't happen. I could however extract the files from WinZip to that same folder instead of moving them there through explorer. Now for the odd part. I can go to another server and access the hidden share \\computername\C$. From another computers explorer I can move any files I want to without any problems. I can also open a command prompt and copy or move files with no problem. I tried renaming the Explorer.exe to Explorer.old then extracted the Explorer.ex_ from the 2000 Server installation CD. I then Rebooted the server, but still have the same problems If anyone could help with this it would be greatly appreciated. Tag: Stack Overflow Tag: 562752

    - Start up error message regarding NET Framework Just had to do a repair install due to a hardware failure. Now I get a message at the end of the Windows 2000 start up that says "Please set registry key HKLM/software/microsoft/NETFramework/installRoot to point to .NET Framework install location."     - No pop-up description in Windows Explorer From the Windows Explorer menu bar, I select Tools/Folder Options.../View Tab/Advanced settings: and see that the check box labeled "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items" is CHECKED. It always has been since I installed Windows 2000. Nonetheless, I do not get pop-ups when I hover my cursor over any type of file in Windows Explorer or on my Desktop(CPU usage ~5%, hover time can be minutes). I have the desktop toolbar on my taskbar. If I progress to a file via the desktop toolbar and hover my cursor over that file, I DO get a pop-up description.     - How to I remotely schedule backups on network PCs I need to schedule backups to run once on approximately 30 PCs on the network. Most of the PCs already use task scheduler and ntbackup to backup files to a server. But I need to run a seperate one time backup of particular folders on each of the PCs. I'd like to schedule the one time backups to run at scattered times over this weekend. I'm hoping to avoid physically sitting down at each workstation to schedule the task. I'd like to simply create a batch file and then somehow add a scheduled task without going to each PC. My biggest problem is how to schedule the tasks remotely.     - Performance Issues What is the difference between "CPU Load" and "Total Memory Used" ? Our system is a file processing system which reads input file and processes it based on different conditions and writes an output file. These are several application windows services do different jobs during the processing. So far we have run only large file of 300,000 lines. We had some performance issues but finally processed it successfully. Now the target is to run files having 500,000 or even 1,000,000 lines/records. I was asked to look for any performance issues. Here I am going to brief you what the system does. 1. We receive these files via FTP. There will be a folder watcher service that keep monitoring the FTP folder and as soon as it receives one file, then it will make the file entry into database (typically inser a new record) 2. Then there is another service FTP the input file to UNIX box in which we have our Database sitting and It will create an external table with all the file data. Writes each line of input as a record in external table. 3. There will be another service reads this table and picks each record and performs different checks and writes into an output table. After reading all the records It will write the output records into output file. 4. There are other services for reports and for other jobs. My question is: How would I know the reason for the slow performance when we run a huge files say 500,000 or 1,000,000 lines? I have notices the CPU Load never was 100% but It went upto 70% When we ran 300,000 lines file. What do I have to do in order to maintain CPU Load level? What is Percent Memory Used? I have see throughout we are maintaining process memory of 17% and some times it went upto 35%. How can I check if there is any IO issue between file transfers from our server to UNIX etc. Our server RAM is 5GB and OS is Windows 2003. I appreciate your responses.     - How to create a .prn file? I'm trying to create a print file from a word document that I can send to a printer from the command line. I went to <Start> <Settings> <Printers>, opened the properties for the printer involved and set the printer port to "Print to a File". I then went through the print dialogue from Winword, gave it a filename and apparently created a print file. Unfortunately, whenever I do this I get a zero byte file. Am I missing something. (The reason I'm trying to do this is that I have a long-standing problem with inkjet printers in that, because my usage is relatively infrequent, when I do come to need the inkjet it's invariably got a dried-up nozzle that I have to spend time, paper and ink cleaning. I felt that I could avoid this by creating a short, simple, multicoloured text string in word and sending it to the printer perhaps every day or two to exercise it without wasting too much ink. However, I'd like to do this automatically and the only way I can think of is by sending the document via a command line in a startup .bat file.     - Moving from W2k to XP with a Big HD Back in August I had some concerns about installing W2K on a modern motherboard and a large SATA hardrive (HD). After getting some help here, I summarized the process as below. However, I just left the HD size as W2K had set it, and did not use any tool to increase the size to it's full size. I'm now going to move the OS up to XP. Will it do this for me? Aug. 18, 2007 I've learned a bit more about this, and it's reflected in this revision post. [Start of an Aside on How This Got Started] Learned from various sources including the thread I started here, "Can W2K Be Installed on SATA Drives?" Let me start with an explanation of "the Hard Way". I have a P5NSLI ASUS motherboard that supports both IDE and SATA controllers. The key word is "both". I wanted to install W2K on the STATA HD, a 320G WS SATA drive. I had some fun trying to get to a point where the OS install asked how I wanted to partition the drive. I was stumped by this window that came up in the install: ============================== 76294 MB Dis 0k on bus 0 on atapi C:NIFS(Drv1_main) 76003MB<6360MB Free D:FAT32(Drv1_extra) 290MB<237MB Free 131070MB Disk 0 at at 0? on? bus 0 on atapi (I didn't copy the ? legibly) Unpartitioned space 131069MB =============================== What puzzled me is that the disk was showing about 76G of space, but yet I had 320G. In my sometimes dizzying attempt to get this far, I asked ASUS tech, the techs at the store I bought the MB at, and others what's this all about. Just continue on they all said. When you apply SP4, it'll take care of the discrepancy. Wrong! That was my IDE 80G HD from my previous system. I had mounted it safely, I thought, on the IDE controller thinking an install would choose the SATA master. Not so. Let me say, charitably, the contents of the 80G HD are no longer with me. (80/76 vs 320--Get it?) Instead it contains only W2K. I probably won't miss the data too much, since over the years I've moved the important stuff to my PC in the den. The world has changed in the four years since I last completely built a PC, etc. :-) I had a long discussion with the ASUS tech on how to get this right. Basically, and what seems the simplest way, is to pull the 80G drive. That will force the install to to the SATA drive. Then I'll clean (reformat) the 80G HD later (after hooking it up again). [End of the Aside] Here's the step by step procedure. Make sure you've taken care of IDE/SATA issues as above. Make sure you are booting from CD as first choice. Make adjustment as required. Most of this should be good for any MB. 1. Fire up the PC 2. Place their driver CD in the drive 3. Wait for the initial ASUS screen to appear, and finally a prompt to boot from the CD. Press a key to start the boot. (Of course, you need to set BIOS to know to start the boot from a CD before trying a HD or other device. 4. Wait for a prompt to choose 32-bit, 64-bit or DOS prompt 5. I selected 32-bit. Wait for a prompt for a floppy 6. Place a 3.5" (fresh) floppy disk in drive-A. Wait for 8 files to be copied to the CD Continuing with the install of W2K 1. Insert the W2K CD 2. Press the boot button when asked 3. Hit F6 soon 4. A prompt for the floppy appears. 5. Put the floppy in and continue 6. Select the "required" sources. In my case there were two. Select one, then loop around to select the second. 6. Press F8 to continue the install 7. Continue on until you get to the partitioning. Make sure you don't fumble the ball like I did. 8. Continue to the end of set up. Change boot priority in BIOS to first boot from HD (see HD selection in BIOS too) before you examine that it works. *You're not finished yet. See next paragraph.* Here's what to do after you get W2K installed (From Patrick above). I haven't tried this, but it looks sound. Be sure to apply SP4 (A) and these two below (B and C) to your new install before connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast) A. Issued 11/11/2003 Use Microsoft Windows 2000, Service Pack 2, Service Pack 3, Service Pack 4 -- Download the update <http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-049.mspx> Then D: Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (Critical security updates rolled into one convenient package) Validate by pressing Continue button (Validation Required), then on next page run the validation tool (in step 1, press Continue) on the W2K machine to get a validation code. Press validate after entering the code, in step 2. Proceed to download. <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;displaylang=en&familyid=B54730CF-8850-4531-B52B-BF28B324C662&displaylang=en> Finally, E: For systems with a HD with more than 137G capacity <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305098> Also see <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322755> on backing up the registry. You may need to add space to the size of the partition if it only took up 137G of a larger HD. Partition Magic is probably the ticket here. I'm about to look into it as I continue past E. I may revise the end of this procedure if necessary, but the above is sound. If you are installing on a new PC and motherboard (MB), install all the drivers from the MB mfger's CD before going to far.     - NTP question on Windows2003 Network I hav configured my primary domain controller to sync time with an external time server by editing the Registry as noted in the microsoft article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042 I have another domain controller which is no longer my primary domain controller that also gets time from an external time source. ( I think I did this via net time /setsntp:nameofserver) Questions: 1. Is there any difference in using net time /setsntp vs editing the registry manually? How do I set my domain controller that is no longer my primary domain controller to obtain time from the primary domain controller (default settings) instead of the external time source. Should I edit the registry settings or just do a net time /setsntp:nameofmynewprimarydomaincontroller?? For this answer I would like to know what the registry settings should for the default setting on the server. Example: Do I change HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type\NTP back to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\Type\NT5DS Delete this key (for some reason the nptserver entry wasn't in my primary domain server so I had to enter it)HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer etc etc. 3. How do I check my other domain servers and member servers to ensure they are getting time from the primary domain server? When I do a net time /querysntp, I get The current SNTP value is: time.windows.com, 0x1. I thought the default setting was that the other servers synched time with the PDC. Thanks.     - STOP error on Win2000 after migrating to Virtual PC I've been fiddling around with moving a Win2000 box to a Virtual PC, and I could use some advice about a STOP error I'm getting. Basically, I created a vhd of the original Windows 2000 drive and attempted to boot from it using Virtual PC 2007. The STOP error I get occurs just after the Windows logo appears, and starts with "a device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught...". At this point, I know I should just start over with a fresh installation, but now I'm curious if it's possible to figure out which driver is causing the problem. I am able to boot into Safe Mode, so I ran msconfig and selected the "Diganostic Mode" option. However, I still get the same STOP error. I also replaced the contents of the system32/drivers folder with drivers from a fresh Windows 2000 installation (also in Virtual PC). Again, same STOP error. What other locations should I be concerned about if trying to eliminate a problematic driver? Is it enough to simply remove suspect files, or is there a better way to tell Windows not to load a driver? Now I need to move all these profiles from the default location c:\documents and settings to the D:\ drive. I've been networking and using Windows 2000 since release, etc... I want to make this as simple as possible, and I'm sure anyone would understand. i have a BIOS drive C: first channel IDE that is divided into two partitions. C: (primary) and E: (extended data) ... the total is 8GB for the drive C: is a system partition of only 1GB and the E: is the rest of 8GB. C: contains my system files ( NT 2000 Workstation) . This workstation is my life's blood. Please imagine how important this process will be. I need to recombine the C: and E: partitions to make one whole 8GB drive. ALL BOOT partitions are on other IDE channels and drives. I have SO many ideas for doing this, and I know this entire thing may be an old question, but what is the fundamental "easiest" procedure for restoring NT 2000 Workstation after recombining the two partitions?     - WMI Service - Stops/Starts Multiple Timees per Day I support a number of Windows 2000 servers in an enterprise enviroment (as well as Server 2003). I'm having issues with a number of the 2K machines. The WMI service will terminate unexpectedly and then (per the recovery options) restart. The service works as it is supposed to after the restart, but since we monitor the environment with MOM, this is sending a large number of alerts which I would like to eliminate. Does this repeated restart indicate a problem with the WMI service or should I look elsewhere for the root cause? I have not seen the issue on any of the 2003 servers, but am not familiar enough with the construction of the services to know if there is an architectural difference in WMI on those different OS versions. In order for this to be less of an enigma, you need to supply
much more information, e.g.
- At what stage of the boot process does it happen?
- Do you get to the logon prompt?
- Can you logon?
- Can you boot into Safe Mode?
- What is the recent history of the machine?

Remember - we can't see your machine!
