Did MS release a time zone update in the past?
Hello!
I turned on an old Dell machine yesterday, using Windows 2000 SP4. I
noticed that it was an hour behind. Did I miss an update from MS to fix
this time zone issue since I am in pacific time zone? Or did MS never
release one like for XP? It should had changed automatically as of last
Sunday.
Thank you in advance. :)

Manufacturer Description
Professional photographers know what they want in a camera. Above all,
the camera must be dependable -- able to come through in shooting
situations that are far less than ideal... even in harsh environmental
and handling conditions. The camera must be responsive -- reacting
instantly to the photographer's input... able to capture, within a
heartbeat, the image in the mind's eye. It must provide a
sophisticated feature set that makes it versatile and adaptable and,
yet, does not compromise operability. And, of course, it must deliver
image quality beyond reproach -- which, in the digital era, means not
only virtually noise-free detail, richness of color, and depth of
tone, but also sufficient data density to satisfy the widest range of
output applications. Today, there is one digital single-lens-reflex
(DSLR) camera that meets these criteria as no other: the Canon EOS-1D
Mark III. Redesigned and re-engineered from the ground up, Canon's
newest flagship EOS is destined to become the next "must have" DSLR
for professionals.
EOS 1D Mark III Highlights
New 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor Excellence in digital photography
starts at the imaging sensor. Canon's uniquely advanced in-house
sensor design and manufacturing capabilities are a major reason why
EOS Digital SLR cameras consistently deliver state-of-the-art imaging
performance.
The EOS-1D Mark III features a newly developed 10.1 megapixel Canon
CMOS sensor. It fulfills the primary functions of an imaging sensor --
sensitive, accurate, extremely low noise capture of image data -- with
unprecedented competence. Its APS-H size sensor results in a 1.3 lens
conversion factor, a format that EOS-1D series photographers are
familiar with. Moreover, it incorporates Canon's latest CMOS
engineering advances that significantly reduce digital noise --
especially in shadow areas -- and expand the useful ISO range.
Exceptionally wide ISO range Combining the superb image capture
capabilities of the new sensor with advanced Dual DIGIC III Image
Processors, the EOS-1D Mark III offers the widest ISO range of any
digital SLR in the world (as of February 2007). The standard range of
100 - 3200 can be extended to a remarkable 50 - 6400.* More
importantly, the low-noise performance at high ISO settings makes the
entire range usable in real-world shooting situations. * Standard
output sensitivity. Recommended exposure index.
14-bit A/D converters Whereas earlier EOS digital cameras used 12-bit
A/D (Analog-to-Digital) converters, the EOS-1D Mark III employs new 14-
bit converters to process the output of the imaging sensor. This
ensures smoother tonal transitions and more natural gradations. RAW
images are recorded at 14 bits so that the full range of tones
captured by the sensor are available in 16-bit TIFF images Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 563046
PartitionMagic A.K.A. PartitionTragic
I had the very bad idea to install two OS's with the help of
PartitionMagic on my Windows 2000.
I copied my data to a 200GB SATA disk and partitioned the original 80GB
disk SATA 2 x 40GB.
After installing W2000 the nightmare started. I only have one OS
installed (Windows 2000 Professional), however while booting it ask to
select 1. Windows 2000 Professional and 2. Windows 2000 Professional!!
Yes twice! Besides W2000 is terribly slow.
I tried to delete the 80GB partitions and start all over again, but it
doesn´t work. Still the PartitionMagic stuff remains in the disk.
Still asks to select between W2K Pro and W2K Pro and the computer is
slow as hell.
Question: What should I do to delete PartitionMagic for good?

Thinkpad cold boot problem
I have two nearly identical W2k ThinkPad laptops, which display the same
problem. During a cold boot GoBack is unable to initialize (if that is the
correct term for this), and when that happens the boot just hangs. Instead
of proceeding from "Preparing Network Connections" to "Applying Security
Policy", and then to the logon screen, instead it proceeds from "Preparing
Network Connections" to "Applying Computer Settings", and from there into
limbo. I'm sure GoBack is the problem because in a successful boot, by
design the GoBack logo will momentarily flash on the screen once it's
initialized. After this failure, if you immediately reboot from shutdown,
the next boot will be successful, as will a reboot from within Windows.
My desktop does not exhibit this problem.
In general I try to minimize what's included in start-up through MS-config,
but there are some proprietary IBM functions that I don't tamper with. I
very much want to keep GoBack on these machines, so I'm wondering if there
is anything I can do to correct this situation. Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562998

Increasing internet speeds
I use this site, http://internetfrog.com/, to measure my u/l and d/l
speeds. From January 22 to March 5, I made 20 tests. On March 6, I ran a
program that optimized internet setting and recorded 5 tests so far.
The averages (and the highest and lowest values)of those two sets of
tests are:
Jan 22 through Mar 5 Mar 6 through Mar 11
D'load speed: 1.75 Mbps (3.01-1.20) 4.24 Mbps (4.66-3.69)
Upload speed: 411 Kbps (675-189) 530 Kbps (841-204)
Quality of service: 42 Pct (95-13) 80 Pct (88-73)
Round Trip Time: 107 ms (122-89) 98 ms (121-91)
Max pause: 461 ms (1124-76) 108 ms (184-80)
The average d/l speed increased by a factor of 2.4, and the spreads
between the highest and lowest reading are considerably less.
Question: Why do the default W2K (SP4) settings give such dismal
performance? Which are the key parameters that have such powerful effects?
For the record, I used System Mechanic Professional 7, which includes an
Optimize Internet Settings tool. Before concluding that this is a spam
for SM, note that I bought the program because it was virtually free
(after rebate), and I wanted its virus protection. However, it didn't
protect me from a virus that took me almost a week to recover from,
including formatting c: and reinstalling all my programs. So I'm not
recommending it for virus/firewall protection.
Bottom line: anyone experiencing sluggish internet performance should
consider some optimizing program. I'm sure there are lots out there. SM
is the only one I've had experience with. Perhaps others reading this
can suggest other programs.

"Access Is Denied" Error Message Appears, When Permissions Are Cor
Hi All,
We recently upgraded a windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 enterprise
edition server, it was a fresh installation.
We created all the shares which existed and gave permissions, and user
started working on it for the last 2 days, yesterday we gave windows update
and updated the server using express update, so almost everything got updated.
This server is a member server in a AD domain, users are grouped this way.
Two groups H1 and H2 were created in "Tai2d/built" OU and all users were
placed in respective groups according to their privileges. But from today
onwards some users are not able to access some shares.
for eg. user1 and user2 are exactly the same, they both belong to the same
group H1, but user2 can access, but user2 is getting access denied. We have
no idea how this can happen, everything set correctly, but...
Anybody has seen this behavior before, kindly let us know the solution. Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562980
Laptop Keyboard Problem
I'm in the process of setting up a ThinkPad R40 W2k laptop for a friend of
mine. I've created a new administrator level profile for her and in general
things are going OK with the exception of this keyboard problem
Certain letters on the right side of the keyboard have numbers or symbols on
them and it's the numbers and symbols that are being displayed when you
press the keys. For instance <explorer.exe> appears as <ex*36rer.exe>. This
can be corrected by pressing shift/num lock after you log in but she
shouldn't have to do that. It should default to a normal keyboard without
that step. The other profiles on the machine don't have this problem.
I've run into this before, probably on this machine in fact, and I've been
able to solve it, but not this time. Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562973
File extension association doesn't work - workarounds?
I run a program which uses a particular file extension (say *.abc).
Opening files from within the program is perfectly functional.
However, by default, there is no registered file type for *.abc. When
I register the file extension to the relevant executable, and double
click on a data file, nothing happens.
The software vendors cannot help, not even to suggest the workaround
which I eventually stumbled across.
There is a workaround - add the executable to the "Send To" list,
right click on a file and the file opens inside the program as hoped.
The other workaround is to use an automation program, but is rarely
applicable.
I do this hundreds of times a day, so double clicking would be far
preferable.
Does anyone have a tip or a method to help with this?
What I have in mind is to create a New Action for "open" for the
particular file extension. The "Application used to perform action"
would then be the Shell or "Windows Explorer" used with suitable
switches to mimic the action of "Send To".
This may or may not be workable, so any suggestions will be welcomed
with open arms. Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562965

SP4 problems
For years, my W2K with SP4 ran okay. Last week, following a virus
attack, I reformatted c: and reinstalled W2K. To make a very long story
short, without SP4, webpages open fast. With SP4, they are virtually
impossible to open, with either of my browsers, Sea Monkey and IE.
I got the SP4 update right from microsoft. File name is
SP4express_EN.exe, size 589K, version 1.16.120.0, June 20, 2003.
Odd thing: before all my problems started, I distinctly remember that if
I went to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, there were multiple entries
related to SP4; maybe they were later patches to SP4. When I reinstall
SP4 today, and then go to remove it, there is just a single entry.
Am I missing some patches or other SP4 updates that could be causing my
problem?
From googling the problem, I notice that other have had this problem
with SP4; when they returned to SP3, the problem disappeared. The odd
thing is SP4 worked okay in my system until the virus problem.

System time keeps going back 1 day
I have a Windows 2000 server (it's not on a domain) whose system clock

frequently, and is becoming a real problem.
We have a freeware program that's supposed to synchronize it with one

control what time of day it does it, and it doesn't do it early enough
in the day to avoid problems with some scheduled processes that we
have.
I tried turning on the Windows Time service, but it gives an error
saying the time is more than 12 hours out of sync and won't adjust it.
I tried putting a new setting in the registry to increase the amount
of time out of sync it will allow, from information at microsoft.com,
but it didn't work.
I tried a couple other freeware programs that will allow you to sync
the time automatically as often as you want (I was going to set it to
5 minutes), but they only change the time, and not the date.
Is there anything else I can try? I wish I knew what was causing it!

should do that. Any help is greatly appreciated and I will elaborate
if necessary, just let me know.
Thanks,

What haqppends to a file or folder that was deleted remotely
A user in the network accessed the server shares through the run command. He
or she deleted a very important file. My question is where does the file go
when it is deleted? It is not in the recycler on the server or on the
individuals computer nor their recycle bin? Thanks for your time! Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562853
windows 2003 OEM License
Is there anyway on a windows 2003 server you can check the OEM license
through the registry instead of the label on the back of the server. Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562851
Blue screen system halted message on start up
Recently had to replace a failed mobo and do a repair install. All went
well and I've got all the service packs updated. The system runs fine if it
starts but about every 3rd start up attempt (I only use this machine 2 or 3
times a week), as soon as Windows starts to load (after the main screen),
I'll get a blue screen with the message "system halted, contact your
hardware vendor."
I haven't changed any components other than the mobo (an Epox 8KHA+ that was
in my WinXP machine for several years). As noted, if Windows loads, the
sytem runs fine with no indication of a problem. At first I thought my
network card wasn't fully seated but I pulled it out and got the same error.
I have 3 SDRAM sticks (2x256 and 1x512), a Radeon 9250 video card, 1
Seagate 80gig drive, 1 floppy and an HP CDRW.
From my research I assume this is some kind of hardware problem but since
it's intermittant, I don't where to start. All suggestions are welcome. Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562820
Symantec NetDetect scheduled task disabled
I'm running Windows 2000 professional, SP4, with the corporate version of
Symantec AntiVirus, full version 10.0.2.2000. When I log in as administrator, I
see that one of the scheduled tasks is Symantec NetDetect, but it is disabled
and has never run. I haven't found a way to show when the task was created.
Despite it being diabled, Symantec AntiVirus seems to automatically update
anyway. Is this scheduled task simply a hold-over from older versions of
Symantec AntiVirus? Tag: Service Dependencies Tag: 562808
How to change Windows Explorer's default directory?
In Windows Explorer, the Explorer Bar displays Folders.
Every time I launch Explorer, "Local Disk (C:)" is selected and
expanded, which I don't want.
I want some other default location under My Computer to be expanded.
But I can't find any place in the UI to do that.
Where do you specify default directory in Windows Explorer?
Thanks.
