    - WMI Access to MountPoints on Windows 2000 Hello, i've got a question. On Windows 2003 there are the WMI-Classes 'Win32_Volume' and 'Win32_MountPoint' to get Information about MountPoints. On Windows 2000 and Windows XP, these two classes don't exit. Are there any other classes which include the same information on Windows 2000 and Windows XP??? -- Nur wer denkt, irrt auch!!!     - Need Help with QBasic Commands I have QBasic Version 1.1 which, as you know, doesn't have a functioning "Help" Menu.     - W2k - failure to load SP4 because of no Web access Hi I have downloaded SP4 and am trying to install it on a laptop that does not have web access (yet!). The process stops with a setup error telling me to go to the W2k Service Pack Web site and select the 'Problems Downloading the Service Pack'. Apparently, I can get information about downloading a version of the service pack that does not need a Web connection. I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE SP WEB SITE!!! Can anyone help an aging newbie please?     - can I delete hotfixes? Hi to all, I have 100 hotfixes installed on my system and would like to uninstall them - will this wreak havoc? my problem is very slow response time on my computer, and I have tried to speed it up by uninstalling old stuff and disabling other things with no change in speed.     - Have to log off twice... On my Windows 2000 Server for some reason I have to log off twice. the first attemtp to log off, shut down or restart does not do anything! When we unshare the folder, we got the error message "An error occurred while trying to delete share speech. The share must be removed from Distributed File System before it can be deleted".     - mouse pointer - double speed? Is there a way to get my logitech mouse (marble mouse trackball) to go at double speed? Even the "fast" box is much slower than the same option under windows 98se. Logitech doesn't respond, so, maybe someone here knows of an aftermarket program that will just double the motion speed of the mouse - ok?     - Reboot? I have an odd situation that may (or may not) be related to my Win2K configuration. I run AVG antivirus on 4 machines all with Win2K. AVG is set to update automatically each day. Recently, on one machine only, the update software is demanding a machine reboot to complete the update. It didn't used to do this and none of the other machines do it and they are all receiving the same updates. This leads me to believe it's a difference in OS configuration which is necessitating this reboot. It's a minor nuisance but does anyone have any idea what might affect this?     - Reinstalling RAID Drivers Hi all, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2500 server, which has a PERC 3Di RAID controller in it, attached to two 36G drives, which are mirrored, running Windows 2000 SBS. We have been having problems lately, where one drive has been going offline - so the other day, we tried to install some of Tools from the Dell website, for diagnosis - unfortunately, one of them, it would appear, has somehow deleted or replaced the correct driver - after restarting (to complete an install of one of the tools), we now get a STOP Error: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. The drives are online at the moment, the array is intact and the data seems to be on the disk (I've used a boot CD to get in and check the data) - so I'm thinking this must be a driver issue - especially given the nature of the stuff we were installing at the time. So my question: How do I get the correct driver installed if I can't get into Windows? I have the 2000 SBS install media, so I can run Recovery Console. I also have a valid, full, NTBACKUP backup of the system, again if that's any good (I was going to restore System State - but again, I can't get into Restore Mode because it won't boot). HELP!     - dueal boot - blue and white screen On ASUS notebook with Windows XP Home attempted to make it dual boot to install W2K. Before dong any changes I copied original ntldr (245K) and ntdetect.com(47K). With Partition Magic created an NTFS primary partition and installed W2K Pro which went smoothly, and W2K was running OK XP Home would not start at all because, as I seem to remember, ntldr(211K) and ntdetect.com(34K) generated by W2K would not load XP, -so I replaced them with the those of XP Home I copied earlier. Now after selecting XPHome it produces the screen suggesting several modes of loading XP Home, but whatever mode I select it just restarts the computer. I replaced ntldr and ntdetect.com with ntldr(230K) and ntdetect.com(47K) from my working desktop. The first - booting into XP gave the same result, i.e. list of loading optioons and restarting the computer. But now W2K would not start. After shortly flashing that screen of starting W2K, it produced a blue_and_white screen of some gobbledegook among which there are english patterns like STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00000002, 0x8907DE88,0x88FB23ó8,0x00000001) ASPI BIOS "readme.txt" http://www.hardware-update.com <F&> (I guess the remaining gobbledegook represent Cyrilics as the computer is localised for Russia) I placed the screenshot here: www.pifpaf.front.ru/blue_white_screen.jpg What might be the problem and the remedy?     - cannot delete empty folders, cannot W-update, cannot inplace upgrade After giving up on the problem deleting recently emptied folders, I tried to update the W2K installation. This failed with a fairly common error message EOX..... the details of which I do not have access to for reasons explained below. None of the MS site suggestions allowed the windows update to begin. Assuming the W2K SP4 installation to be corrupt, I attempted to perform an in-place upgrade, booting from the installation CD with the correct raid drivers available during start-up. After failing to read spxcoins.dl_ off the installation disk, or off a subsequent floppy copy, the inplace upgrade stopped midway during final registry of devices. The spxcoins.dl_ is present on the install disk. The installation program does not display the files name's '.dl_' type, when 'browsing' for the 'missing' file. This is repeated for any subsequent attempt to complete the upgrade. As this is an ntfs installation on a raid device, I have no other operating systems or hardware to retrieve data off the drive, and no access to the second boot option WXP on the second raid hard drive, while the first is non-compos mentis. When I tried to install a temporary W2K OS in a drive mounted in an IDE position, I got the same errors. The correct raid drivers are loaded when booting from the installation CD, via floppy. Booting up into W2K, I get the message that the install did not complete and a run through of the same loop of missing .dl_file and stopped device registry. Any advice on: 1) completing the in-place upgrade 2) retreiving data 3) getting the temporary functional W2K OS installed on an IDE drive. ?     - Users & Groups Win 2000 Server. I want to ad a user to the "Administrators" group who is now a member of the "domain user" group. Should I just add them to the Administrator and also leave them as a member of the domain user group, or remove them from the domain user group.     - Windows 2000 Server StandardEdition /PAE Question Hi. I have a Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition, with 4GB of RAM installed. I also have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition installed on the same server. I'd like Windows to 'see' all $GB of RAM and I've read articles on /PAE, but unfortunately some of these articles imply that Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition cannot use /PAE. So I have a couple of questions that I hope the group can answer: 1) Does Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition only support 2GB of RAM out of the box? 2) Can /PAE be enabled on 2000 Server Standard Edition to allow it to utilize all 4GB? The NTP host supports MD5 authentication and, ideally, I'd like the Windows 2000 client to use this when requesting from the NTP server.     - User Profiles In a previous posting, I described a problem whereby my computer is booting to what I believe appears to be a different user profile than I have been using for the past year. I am now convinced that this is the problem. Under Documents & Settings (Windows Explorer), an old user profile (call it User#2, removed a year ago) suddenly appeared today. (There was a sudden power outage yesterday for a very brief period, although I use a surge protector.) It is this profile to which the computer is booting. For example, when I first booted up, the desktop was dramatically altered. The icons for this changed desktop are shown in the Desktop folder under User#2. If I open Internet Explorer, there are no Favorites in the Favorites folder, because this folder is empty for User#2. However, if one goes to the Control Panel, Users and Passwords, this profile, User#2, does not appear. My question is: how do I get rid of this profile, if the computer does not show it to exist? When I boot up the computer, the former user profile name that I have used is shown in the boot-up window, but the computer does not boot up to this profile. I suppose that I could try to trick the computer by copying all of the files and folders, shown under the former profile name, into the User#2 profile. However, is there a risk if I delete the old profile name from the system after doing that? If the User#2 profile does not show up now under Users and Passwords, might not the computer boot up at all (except possibly to the Administrator profile)? Fun and games...     - CDO.dll version 6.0.6603.0 I am having an issue with my Blackberry users. When they enter an appointment in their BB, it shows up in Outlook with the Start Time an hour later than what they created and what shows on the BB. I successfully installed all the DST2007 patches back in March 2007 and had no issues. However, I had an issue with my Exchange 2000 server 3 weeks ago, and it was solved by applying the latest Exchange SP3 update rollup, KB870540, which set my cdo.dll at version 6.0.6603.0. I applied this patch to my BB server too, since it had the Exchange System Manager. This seems to be when users started noticing the issue of the calendar appointments with mismatched start times. RIM support, which exhaustively checked my BES server and found it in perfect working order, tells me that the cdo.dll version I now have somehow does not "include" the DST patch, and must be repaired! However, when I check my registry on the Exchange and BES servers (both Windows server 2000 SP4, I know I know, get it updated), it shows the DynamicDST subkey under the TimeZone Key, which I'm told is the definitive test of whether the DST patch has been applied.Also, my servers have always shown the correct time, and still do now. So my question is, does the KB870540 update somehow disable the DST patch? Is there an established procedure for reapplying the DST after applying the KB870540 update? Thanks.     - winsxs folder? Re: W2K Pro (SP4) - can I delete the winsxs folder My WINNT folder tree contains a 'winsxs' folder that's 8.8MB & created Sept. 2007. I found it doing some cleanup. Some Google searches indicate that winsxs has some relevance to WinXP and Vista functions only - & as a dll file backup. Other Google hits refer to developmental project functions. Many Google hits represent inquiries like this one but no threads seem to offer solutions. Most references to winsxs seem too technical to be intended for the average home user regardless of such user's expertise. I found no relevant references on the Microsoft Knowledge base. I am very curious how this apparent deadwood folder got installed on my W2K PC (my guess would be by a Windows update) but I'm more concerned about how to safely get rid of it.     - Original version of Windows 2000 Pro has re-appeared When I booted up my computer this am, the original version of Windows 2000 Pro appeared (without any of the updates religiously made over the years). There was no internet connection, but all of the My Documents/Program Files folders were intact. I have a backup copy of my hard drive.     - Win 2K Pro Partition Size What size partition should I make on an 80 Gig HDD for Win 2K pro operating system? I'm thinking about 25 gig for the OS & the rest for data. I want to keep the os partition a small as possible without interfering with the os. Also how big should the page file be? Enter Partition OK Format OK Copying files OK After Setup copied w2k files Initialize Windows OK Setup reboots then again "Press any key to boot from CD....." Didn't press any key. Computer hangs.     - PartitionMagic A.K.A. PartitionTragic I had the very bad idea to install two OS's with the help of PartitionMagic on my Windows 2000. I copied my data to a 200GB SATA disk and partitioned the original 80GB disk SATA 2 x 40GB. After installing W2000 the nightmare started. I only have one OS installed (Windows 2000 Professional), however while booting it ask to select 1. Windows 2000 Professional and 2. Windows 2000 Professional!! Yes twice! Besides W2000 is terribly slow. I tried to delete the 80GB partitions and start all over again, but it doesn´t work. Still the PartitionMagic stuff remains in the disk. Still asks to select between W2K Pro and W2K Pro and the computer is slow as hell. Question: What should I do to delete PartitionMagic for good?     - Workgroup is not accessible: Can't see my other computer on my WLAN I'm running a WIN 2000 PC with a wireless connection to Internet via a private wireless WLAN router and an ADSL modem. To the same WLAN is connected a MS Vista LapTop as well. Until recently, I was able to see the Vista LapTop computer name under My Computer - Computers Near Me and My Network Places - Entire Network - Microsoft Windows Network - Workgroup but now, all I get is an error window message showing : "Workgroup is not accessible. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently avialable." What can I do to in order to be able to access the other computer via the WLAN ? (The other way around, my Win 2000 PC is also not visible from the Vista LapTop. This was also funtioning until recently).     - copy large file to USB drive hangs When I copy large files to my USB drive, it hangs. I've done some checking and found there is a problem with Win2k that is fixed in SP2.     - Missing "Mailto" Always awkward questions I am afraid - last two had no answers so must be difficult! In my constant twiddling (no rebukes please) I have managed to stop email links in web pages opening up a mail client and starting a new email. Browser is Firefox2.. and mail is Thunderbird. Checked prefs on those - all ok. Registry shows mailto entry as pointing to Thunderbird but there seems to be fields missing.     - Thinkpad cold boot problem I have two nearly identical W2k ThinkPad laptops, which display the same problem. During a cold boot GoBack is unable to initialize (if that is the correct term for this), and when that happens the boot just hangs. Instead of proceeding from "Preparing Network Connections" to "Applying Security Policy", and then to the logon screen, instead it proceeds from "Preparing Network Connections" to "Applying Computer Settings", and from there into limbo. I'm sure GoBack is the problem because in a successful boot, by design the GoBack logo will momentarily flash on the screen once it's initialized. After this failure, if you immediately reboot from shutdown, the next boot will be successful, as will a reboot from within Windows. My desktop does not exhibit this problem. In general I try to minimize what's included in start-up through MS-config, but there are some proprietary IBM functions that I don't tamper with.     - Increasing internet speeds I use this site, http://internetfrog.com/, to measure my u/l and d/l speeds. From January 22 to March 5, I made 20 tests. On March 6, I ran a program that optimized internet setting and recorded 5 tests so far. The averages (and the highest and lowest values)of those two sets of tests are: Jan 22 through Mar 5 Mar 6 through Mar 11 D'load speed: 1.75 Mbps (3.01-1.20) 4.24 Mbps (4.66-3.69) Upload speed: 411 Kbps (675-189) 530 Kbps (841-204) Quality of service: 42 Pct (95-13) 80 Pct (88-73) Round Trip Time: 107 ms (122-89) 98 ms (121-91) Max pause: 461 ms (1124-76) 108 ms (184-80) The average d/l speed increased by a factor of 2.4, and the spreads between the highest and lowest reading are considerably less. Question: Why do the default W2K (SP4) settings give such dismal performance? Which are the key parameters that have such powerful effects? For the record, I used System Mechanic Professional 7, which includes an Optimize Internet Settings tool. Before concluding that this is a spam for SM, note that I bought the program because it was virtually free (after rebate), and I wanted its virus protection. However, it didn't protect me from a virus that took me almost a week to recover from, including formatting c: and reinstalling all my programs. So I'm not recommending it for virus/firewall protection. Bottom line: anyone experiencing sluggish internet performance should consider some optimizing program. I'm sure there are lots out there. We created all the shares which existed and gave permissions, and user started working on it for the last 2 days, yesterday we gave windows update and updated the server using express update, so almost everything got updated. This server is a member server in a AD domain, users are grouped this way. Two groups H1 and H2 were created in "Tai2d/built" OU and all users were placed in respective groups according to their privileges. But from today onwards some users are not able to access some shares. for eg. user1 and user2 are exactly the same, they both belong to the same group H1, but user2 can access, but user2 is getting access denied. We have no idea how this can happen, everything set correctly, but... Anybody has seen this behavior before, kindly let us know the solution.     - Laptop Keyboard Problem I'm in the process of setting up a ThinkPad R40 W2k laptop for a friend of mine. I've created a new administrator level profile for her and in general things are going OK with the exception of this keyboard problem Certain letters on the right side of the keyboard have numbers or symbols on them and it's the numbers and symbols that are being displayed when you press the keys. For instance <explorer.exe> appears as <ex*36rer.exe>. This can be corrected by pressing shift/num lock after you log in but she shouldn't have to do that. It should default to a normal keyboard without that step. The other profiles on the machine don't have this problem.     - File extension association doesn't work - workarounds? I run a program which uses a particular file extension (say *.abc). Opening files from within the program is perfectly functional. However, by default, there is no registered file type for *.abc. When I register the file extension to the relevant executable, and double click on a data file, nothing happens. The software vendors cannot help, not even to suggest the workaround which I eventually stumbled across. There is a workaround - add the executable to the "Send To" list, right click on a file and the file opens inside the program as hoped. The other workaround is to use an automation program, but is rarely applicable. I do this hundreds of times a day, so double clicking would be far preferable. Does anyone have a tip or a method to help with this? What I have in mind is to create a New Action for "open" for the particular file extension. The "Application used to perform action" would then be the Shell or "Windows Explorer" used with suitable switches to mimic the action of "Send To".     - Registry Woes Courtesy of Adobe Morning: I recently allowed the adobe updater to upgrade my reader... It didn't uninstall the Reader 9.0b.ocx file properly before loading the new version and now the registry is looking for that OCX file... I tried deleting the key that refers to it but Win 2K won't let me delete the invalid registry key...
