Executables are shown as File Folders.
Hi Everyone,
I have a pc running windows xp sp2. However this is the strage behaviour I
am observing. When I click on
Start => Run and type msconfig, I expect the system configuration utility
to open up.
However it is opening the msconfig in the notepad and showing all the
executable code.
So I went to the \windows\system32 folder and saw the executables. What I
noticed is that all the applications (including msconfig.exe) are shown as
File Folder instead of applications. I dont know what is going on. Is there
any setting which might have caused this?
Can some one help me out on this issue. Because of this, I am not able to
run any utilities /executables.
Help is immediately requested.
Thanks. Tag: Im so tired of my information being tampered with Tag: 206448

Drive mapping for multiple users
Hi
We are an ASP.Net development dept that until recently used Win2k dev PCs,
and have now moved to XP (yes a bit behind the times, but we are a goverment
office).
A quick history before the problem: In our production servers the apps write
log files to a G: drive, however our dev PCs don't have a physical G: drive.
Under Win2k we simulated the G: drive to avoid reconfiguring the log file
path when an app was moved from dev to production. We did this by creating a
folder on our C: drive (e.g. "C:\GDrive"), sharing it, then mapping the G:
drive to it (i.e. \\mycomputername\GDrive\).
Unfortunately this doesn't work with XP. I read somewhere that the above
only worked through sheer luck, because there was a "loophole" in Win2k that
allowed a user (e.g. the ASPNET user that the app runs under) to access
mapped drives that other users (i.e. the currently logged in user) had
created on that PC.
Does anyone know of another way to get this working? The issue does appear
to be one of not "seeing" the G: drive at all ("path not found"), rather than
access/security (access denied). I've tried adding just about every user
(ASPNet, IUSR_machinename, Everyone, etc) to the drive and the share, and
giving them full control, without it making a difference.
(And we can't have a physical G: drive as our PCs all follow the
(restrictive) corporate image).
Thanks in advance

Computer Administrator has no permission.
The PC user is set a scomputer administrator but cannot execue any program.
The message says no permission. Explorer lets me see the program on the C:
drive, but it will not execute. The message is that windows cannot run.
I've done a full spyware and virus check but found nothing. In Safe mode,
Administrator can execute. Creating a new user with admin privileges, then
reboot in normal mode, that user cannot execute any program either.

Problem with cached credentials
Hello All,
I am having an interesting problem with cached credentials on a laptop, and
was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the issue.
We have created two Exchange-enabled AD user objects for the firm's managing
partner and his wife. Both want to check their email using Outlook RPC/HTTP
while at their weekend home. A laptop has been set up as a member of the AD
domain. Each user has logged into the laptop and had their Outlook profile
configured/tested while the computer was connected to the office network.
Both users are using local, not roaming, profiles. Each user is supposed to
be able to log into the laptop with their cached domain username and
password, check their mail as indicated, then log out of Windows.
Here's what happens: User 1 logs in, checks his mail, logs out. User 2
logs in, checks her mail, logs out. User 1 tries to log in again, but gets
a "domain controller cannot be found" error. It's like the cached
credentials for User 1 went completely out the window after User 2 logged
in. Is this normal ? Please reply to group and email.
Thanks,

Computer shuts down & comes back by itself
The problem I am having started approximately 1 1/2 years ago. The computer
would just do a normal shut down and boot back up with no prompting from me.
Like it had a mind of it own.
I worked with the computer techs for the brand of computer, and other
computer techs, and proceeded to change the power supply, hard drive, mother
board, CPU, and upgraded to Windows XP Pro. I pretty much changed out the
guts of the computer except for the original hard drive, DVD & CD drives. I
actually pulled my original hard drive when I purchased the new one but
eventually the problem returned. I have reformatted several times, repaired
Windows several times. Normally I can get a few months out of it before it
decides to turn off and on by itself.
The one thing I have been noticing is that it looks like Windows Auto Update
service crashes and the computer looses its mind. I have tried several
things but nothing is working now. I have disabled Windows Update everywhere
I can find it.
My lastest session did not fix the problem. I did the Windows reinstall
repair (which usually works for a while), but not this time. I have been
trying to run the McAfee Stinger but the computer starts its little on and
off thing about half way through the scan.
Help.

Pointsec protected partition lost after install ubuntu
I used to have one Windos XP partition and it's protected by pointsec.
I created a new partition with help of partition magic and installed

Pulling My Hair Out
I am trying to change the way uses login using the
user accounts control panel.
After I check the box to use the welcome screen and exit the screen
then go back the check is gone and I if I restart I still do not see the

I have turned off enable offline files and disabled
the requirement to press ctrl-alt-delete to log on.
I have looked through the various policies in the management
console but have not found anything that is getting in the way.
I suspect there is some registry setting getting in the way but
so far I have not found anything that will allow me to set it.
Any ideas would help.

Cannot access temporary files
It seems that e-mail attachments are copied, say by MS Outlook 2007 or IE7 to
a temporary folder prior to being opened for viewing.
The files, however, cannot be accessed, after they have been copied; the

The caption reads the following path:

The Temporary Internet Files does not exist within the path c:\documents and

command.com New in Startup folder
August 16th I installed eleven (11) updates from Microsoft Windows Update

New EFS tool available - EFS Certificate Configuration Updater
Following on the heels of the recent release of the EFS Assistant
shared-source tool, I am proud to announce the release of another tool
to smooth the path for reliable recovery of EFS'd files:
EFS Certificate Configuration Updater (http://www.codeplex.com/
EFSCertUpdater/)
__Why should you care?__
- You'll be interested if you're using EFS, and
- You've tried to make sure that you (or your users) are using the EFS
certificate that was archived (with its private key) in your Microsoft
Certificate Server.
__What difference will it make?__
- When users need to recover access to *ALL* their EFS'd files, and
- When you want to make the process as fast and painless for the users
as possible
- The copy of the user's archived EFS keys that you extract from your
Certificate Server should be (almost) guaranteed to decrypt all the
user's encrypted files.
There are a number of my customers who expressed concerns that even if
they did everything right - enabling Autoenrollment policy, creating
"version 2" certificate templates for use with EFS, automatically
archiving the user's EFS keypair at enrollment time - there's still no
guarantee that the user's PCs were actually *using* those archived EFS
keys to encrypt files.
Most of the time it works fine, but they told me they'd seen cases
where:
- users had once tried using EFS, and abandoned it later, but the new
EFS certificate didn't replace the pre-existing (non-archived) EFS
certificate, so all files continued to be encrypted with an
unrecoverable key
- users had encrypted files before the PKI was in place, then upgraded
their certificate, but their existing encrypted files weren't updated
to be encrypted with the new keys
No, I'm not trying to panic anyone - like I said, this affects a small
fraction of the user population in most wide-scale EFS deployments.
However, it's an issue I've heard over and over again, and this tool
should help folks get on with their deployments.
__How does it work?__
- The tool works strictly at the command line - it presents no UI
- It searches through all the EFS certificates the user has in their
personal certificate store (aka the "MY store")
- It keeps searching until it finds a certificate that (a) is still
valid, (b) is not self-signed, (c) has an associated private key, and
(d) has the EFS EKU
- Once it identifies a suitable certificate, it checks whether that is
the currently-configured certificate; if not, then it updates the
CertificateHash registry setting and quits
- Oh, and it generates a log file of its activity
__What does it require?__
- .NET 2.0
- XP or Vista (only been tested on XP so far)
- it doesn't require Admin rights, but I bet it'd barf if it ran under
DropMyRights
__How often would I have to use this tool?__
- In theory, once
- All you really need is to get the user *off* their self-signed
certificate, and encrypting with the v2 certificate
- From there, Autoenrollment should be able to keep renewing EFS
certificates with no failures - unless the user's PC is off the
company network for months at a time
__What's next for the EFS Cert Updater?__
- Do some further robustness testing to see if there are any
circumstances under which non-v2 EFS certs could be selected
- Add a command-line parameter to specify an exact Certificate
Template from which the selected EFS cert must be enrolled
- Enable a capability to archive (i.e. hide) all other EFS
certificates except the selected one
- Add capability to write to the Application Event Log
- Enable a capability to select the "best" EFS certificate if multiple
are found
Please browse the web site, leave some feedback or questions, and give
it a spin. All assistance is greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Mike Smith-Lonergan

Activation Problem after Update
Installed XP Home 2 years ago, no problems. Just received 10 automatic

prevent me from doing anything? How do I reset the activation and clear this

Could anybody give me any ideas why when I run IFMEMBER /LIST I get results
which are incorrect? When a user logs into a workstation, a script runs
which gives the user access to programs that they are given permission too in

given the user an icon for something that they are not added to in the

User accounts disappearing - how?
We run about 25 XP workstations in a W2k3 AD-integrated domain, protected by
Cisco firewall, Microsoft Update (including Malware Remover), and McAfee
anti-virus (workstations updated every 48 hours).
So that anyone can work effectively at any workstation, an AD security group
should be designated as a Power User on each workstation.
I have a suspicion that this account, and maybe others, have been
disappearing from workstations.
Just this morning, one of my colleagues had to log in an employee as a
Domain Admin so he could finish an urgent job. When he finished, I checked
the PC - the only authorised account on the machine was Local Administrator
(to which Domain Administrator can log in)!
What can be removing these accounts?
What should I check apart from:
1) Malware
2) Dis-functional Group Policy
Are there any batch commands or tools which can list user accounts?
TIA

system password expired = Web passwords gone
Hi,
I work on an XP Pro system that belongs to a domain but my user account is a
local one. I got a message that my password is about to expire so I changed
it. After I logged in, the system forgot all my identification credentials,
not just passwords, but login identifiers as well! Not that I cannot recover
them, it just seems odd. Why is that so?

Secedit.sdb corruption
I am creating Remote Install images. I can configure a PC, suck the image up
to the server and then apply it to a PC, however.....when a domain user logs
onto a newly imaged PC the secedit.sdb gets corrupted and group policy
processing doesn't happen. There is supposedly a fix for this (MSKB
884018).....I have tried applying this fix to an image before it gets sucked
up to the server, but when the image is applied to a PC, secedit.sdb gets
corrupted again. I have now spent nearly a month on this, and if I wan't
already bald I would be by now!! What have I done wrong with this image to
cause the constant secedit.sdb corruption? By the way, I know secedit.sdb
isn't corrupted BEFORE I suck the image up to the RIS server because there
are no extra files in the %windir%\security database. Once secedit.sdb starts
showing signs of curruption it seems that a bunch of *.log and edb.chk files
appear in the security directory....and this only happens once a domain user
logs onto the PC. Tag: Im so tired of my information being tampered with Tag: 206299
Adding Security Group to Windows XP administrators
I have just installed a new Windows 2003 Small Business Server and set up a
domain on it. I have added two XP machines as domain members, however I want
to add a domain security group to the local administrators group. When I go
to Manage, Local Users & Group, Administrators and click on add, all I see
for a location is the local machine name. What have I done wrong. I can
browse the network for all devices, remove and readd machines to the domain,
and still I can't see the domain as a valid location on the XP machines. Any
ideas. Tag: Im so tired of my information being tampered with Tag: 206293
Print Spooler keeps failing
We switched our print server (migrated the printers off one server to another
one...) from a Windows 2000 Server to a Windows 2003 Server. Now
periodically we are getting users (they are all on the XP Pro OS) that are
having spooler issues on their LOCAL computers. The Spooler service is
shutting down on a few of them for some reason, no idea why...

How do I block ability to change Themes?
Is there a local policy or any other way to keep users from accessing the
Themes tab or from changing Themes? By the way, most end users are power
users.
Thanks so much! Tag: Im so tired of my information being tampered with Tag: 206287

Set the permissions such that only you can access the file. Attempts to
access the
file by others will show up in the security event file.
Another way would be to place the sensitive data on a removable disk. Then
put
the disk where it is protected by lock and key.

Do you control the storage area for said information?
