    - XP Updates- The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000 This morning my XP Pro computer received notification of MS security updates... I installed them with no issue and an optional MS update... with no issues. I then went to my second XP Pro computer, which is not on auto-update and then downloaded and installed the same updates. After rebooting, NO Application will run... The error message is: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142), Click on OK to terminate the application.     - Anonymous access to shares Hello, Is it possible to allow anonymous access to shares without having to enable the Guest account. I've tried setting Sharing and NTFS permissions and modify the Local GPO to allow the built in ANONYMOUS LOGON account. No luck. I can't access the share without getting a prompt for the user name password. Everything out on the web says to enable the Guest account. I know this will work but it is not the way i want to go.     - Activation Problem after Update Installed XP Home 2 years ago, no problems. Just received 10 automatic updates, now when XP Home starts (and before login), message appears to activate within 7 days. However, when I select "yes to activate", replies "Already Activated". I see where people's systems lock up and prevent them from doing anything because their activation period ends. Is my system going to freeze and prevent me from doing anything? How do I reset the activation and clear this problem? I see where there are hundreds, probably thousands of problems people have. Maybe with the BILLIONS of dollars microsoft makes, they can fix their stuff to work right. Regular people shouldn't have to take a junior college class to have a simple home computer system and have to dig in the internal guts of their XP product to keep it running !!!     - no administerative privaleges? Hi, I have a dell inspiron 1501 laptop with XPSP2, all current updates, no dodgey software, no viruses. I have always had a problem when I change the MSCONFIG startup items. I change them and it says i need to log on with administerative privaleges for the settings to be changed! even though the changes DO take affect and it seems to be not a problem its starting to get on my....s . does anyone know whats wrong with it? the only account on the computer is mine which is an administrator. thank you.     - IFMember problem Hello, Could anybody give me any ideas why when I run IFMEMBER /LIST I get results which are incorrect? When a user logs into a workstation, a script runs which gives the user access to programs that they are given permission too in Active Directory. This has been working great until recently when it has given the user an icon for something that they are not added to in the security group. IFMEMBER /LIST claims that they are but on double checking the security group, although its present, there is actually no members added. Can any please shed any light into this for me please?     - User accounts disappearing - how? We run about 25 XP workstations in a W2k3 AD-integrated domain, protected by Cisco firewall, Microsoft Update (including Malware Remover), and McAfee anti-virus (workstations updated every 48 hours). So that anyone can work effectively at any workstation, an AD security group should be designated as a Power User on each workstation. I have a suspicion that this account, and maybe others, have been disappearing from workstations. Just this morning, one of my colleagues had to log in an employee as a Domain Admin so he could finish an urgent job. When he finished, I checked the PC - the only authorised account on the machine was Local Administrator (to which Domain Administrator can log in)! What can be removing these accounts? What should I check apart from: 1) Malware 2) Dis-functional Group Policy Are there any batch commands or tools which can list user accounts?     - Rootkit findings I have sysinternals "Rootkit Revealer" v 1.7 so I ran it on my XP MCE system that I keep clean with frequent use of Ad-Aware SE personal, Spybot, and Avast plus ZoneAlarm. So I was surprised when it showed 6 discrepancies. I'm even more unhappy because I cannot make sense of these 6 discrepancies. Can someone tell me what to do with these results?     - Make Changes to Mandatory Roaming Profiles? I am one of the system/domain administrators and we currently have mandatory roaming profiles setup for a portion of our domain. The profiles are stored on a server and a not propagating to the server via Group Poilicy. How do I make changes to a user's profile without disabling the Prevent Profile changes from propagating to the server, making the changes while the user is logged on locally at the machine, logging off, and then re-enabling the policy.     - DigitalPersona locks my computer I am using Ver1 of DigitalPersona fingerprint reader with a Ms model 1032 keyboard with Finger print reader built in. I have had this computer/keyboard for over two years. I have had no problems with the fingerprint reader during that time. Today I cannot get the reader to read my fingerprints. when I try I get a "Logon message" that says : the system could not log you on. There may be a mismatch between the DigitalPersona password Manager and SAM databases. If your windows password has been changed by your system adminstrator and youknow the new password, try using it to log onto windows. For more infomation , contact your adminstrator. When I try my windows password it dosen't work. I cannot log onto the computer. I have tried using "Safe Mode" but I still have to get past the fingerprint reader. All of the help that I have been able to find pertains to after you are signed on. I cannot get past the log on splash screen.     - Please help to block pop-up windows Hi all, I am running Window XP SP2. I have recently experienced with some pop-up windows that occur when I was viewing some of the websites. This have never happened before. I have done almost everything, but the problem is never resolved. Here are what I have tried to do: - installing google toolbar and enabling pop-up blocker - having my pop-up blocker turn ON and setting Filter Level to HIGH - trying to use SpyBot SD, Norton Antivirus 2007, SpywareDoctor 2007, Ad-Aware Pro 2007 to scan my laptop to kill spyware, adware or any virus But, all of that did not help me much. The pop-up windows still come up back then. I do not know what else should I do to resolve it. Can anyone gives me any suggestion?     - system password expired = Web passwords gone Hi, I work on an XP Pro system that belongs to a domain but my user account is a local one. I got a message that my password is about to expire so I changed it. After I logged in, the system forgot all my identification credentials, not just passwords, but login identifiers as well!     - Secedit.sdb corruption I am creating Remote Install images. I can configure a PC, suck the image up to the server and then apply it to a PC, however.....when a domain user logs onto a newly imaged PC the secedit.sdb gets corrupted and group policy processing doesn't happen. There is supposedly a fix for this (MSKB 884018).....I have tried applying this fix to an image before it gets sucked up to the server, but when the image is applied to a PC, secedit.sdb gets corrupted again. I have now spent nearly a month on this, and if I wan't already bald I would be by now!! What have I done wrong with this image to cause the constant secedit.sdb corruption? By the way, I know secedit.sdb isn't corrupted BEFORE I suck the image up to the RIS server because there are no extra files in the %windir%\security database. Once secedit.sdb starts showing signs of curruption it seems that a bunch of *.log and edb.chk files appear in the security directory....and this only happens once a domain user logs onto the PC.     - Adding Security Group to Windows XP administrators I have just installed a new Windows 2003 Small Business Server and set up a domain on it. I have added two XP machines as domain members, however I want to add a domain security group to the local administrators group. When I go to Manage, Local Users & Group, Administrators and click on add, all I see for a location is the local machine name. What have I done wrong. I can browse the network for all devices, remove and readd machines to the domain, and still I can't see the domain as a valid location on the XP machines. Any ideas.     - Print Spooler keeps failing We switched our print server (migrated the printers off one server to another one...) from a Windows 2000 Server to a Windows 2003 Server. Now periodically we are getting users (they are all on the XP Pro OS) that are having spooler issues on their LOCAL computers.     - windows xp promt for activation, but already activated Hi, My company have a few hundreds of Kiosk with operating system windows xp sp2. The Automatic Update is on. All the Kiosk cannot access internet, only LAN. So effectively cannot automaticly update itself. All the XP have been activated before. Running for a few months without problem.     - OneCare breaking iTunes internet access I've installed OneCare 90 day evaluation. Since doing so iTunes is unable to access the internet. I've manually added iTunes.exe to the list of Firewall allowed programs and the dialog correctly identifies the iTunes version (7.3.1.3) however it still fails to connect to the Internet when trying to update podcasts or browsing the iTunes store. Turning off the firewall fixes the problem but it's obviously not a workable long term solution. Never had this issue with the old Windows XP SP2 firewall. Any thoughts anyone?     - gpedit.msc Hello experts, In a box with WinXP SP2 with 2 users (single user & admin) im the admin, the other user is only allow to make a telnet connection to a server, so i used gpedit.msc to make all the necessary blocks and settings and only allow user to run this only shorcut in desktop. When using gpedit.msc i blocked all access to HD, to LAN, to all menus in explorer, desktop, anyway, i did a very hard-to-bypass settings (user can not do ANYTHING), i forgot to make a shorcut for gpedit.msc in my admin user just in case i need to make settings again, and now i can't even access or display menus or anything in my admin user, so the question is......How can I make my way to run my gpedit.msc in order to make the settings im missing??? i don't want to reinstall windows just because i messed up??     - "Installer has insufficient privileges" message I am trying to install the BBC iPlayer and encounter the following message ; "The Installer has insufficient privileges to access the directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Deliveries.     - Strange screen rotate problem Hi Sorry for posting to so many NGs. This is just so strange that I don't know what to do and am looking for any help I can get. A client has reported a strange problem. According to her, she leaned on her Dell win xp desktop keyboard by mistake and some keys were pressed which caused the screen image to rotate 90 degrees. She does not know which keys were pressed. To compensate for rotated image, she has rotated her monitor 90 degrees in the other direction and is working like this at the moment.     - HELP: sorts out & cleans up NTFS security permissions I used SysInternal's AccessEnum and found it quite useful for Windows 2003 Server admin work, but laborious. I have 2 HDs, C:\ & D:\. What if another admin played about with the NTFS security permissions of C:\? Is there a "revert back to system defaults" option? Currently the only way I see is to install Windows 2003 Server on another PC and compare NTFS security permissions on all files/folders in C:\. As for D:\ I have been trying to setup NTFS security permissions. But I like to revert back to defaults. Is it safe to select all root folders and in Advanced Security Settings tick both the "Inherit from parent..." & "Replace permission entries...". I notice generally that normal (non-system) folders inherit the root drive (C:\, D:\) permissions.     - CD DVD drives disabled I searched and found what should be a solution in a similar post by Moses on 5/14/2007 titled, "Prohibited access to CD?DVD ROM drives". However, it is not working in my case. I got the same message as that user did, ""Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD ROM drives." However, The MS-MVP Wesley Vogel initially pointed to this web site: http://www.boyce.us/gp/gpcontent.asp?ID=549. I looked and I don't have any registry key of HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer!NoViewOnDrive and neither did Moses. Then Vogel suggested using gpedit.msc, but I'm not sure if that worked for Moses because he didn't post again. However, I've tried it and it has not fixed my problem. I cannot access my CD/DVD drives. It started when I was working with Visual Studio and the MODI class, drawing class, graphics class, and bitmap class to select portions of images and save them as tiff files and performing OCR. During debugging (there is a seperate Debugger Administrative account by the way which may be part of this issue) I encountered protected memory access violations and had to reboot. I got the message saying the Administrator disabled the CD/DVD drives when Windows XP restarted. At first I could see the drives in My Computer, but when I opened them there was nothing there, and when I launch a game which requires the DVD that is in my drive it says it's not there. The MVP in the .net.framework.drawing newsgroup suggested that I remove and reinstall the drivers. Well, now I don't even see the drives listed in My Computer!     - Does Windows Firewall Actualy Do Anything? I recently noticed that when I clicked on default settings for W.F. and unchecked the only box left (remote computing), all my internet programs still work great, if not better! I had years worth of ports open and I think they may have been causing memory conflicts. A lot of programs like AVG and Windows Live Messenger ask for three ports each, which I denied and noticed they both still work fine. In fact the only program I allow a port is Bit Torrent, but they claim their program will work even with out a port open.     - Router stopped working My second computer, which has been successfully wirelessly hooked up for 3 years stopped working. A friend has determined that it is my router that is not working correctly. I went to Best Buy to purchase a new one and the Geeks told me that it is most likely NOT the router.     - Runas and Ctrl-C Hi, I have been looking for a long time and searched many forums and web sites to figure out why when you press the Ctrl-C or Ctrl-Break combination in a "cmd.exe" session created using the "runas.exe" command it doesn't "break" out of the session the same as when you run a "cmd.exe" session without the "runas.exe" command. Using the "break" on/off function in cmd doesn't have any effect. ie. 1. create a "cmd.exe" session with the "runas.exe" command. (runas.exe /user:<domain>\<username> cmd) 2. ping <server> -t 3.     - Pictures, Shortcuts, Favorites, etc. missing after password error My wife used our home computer yesterday morning. We have a password to get into Windows XP Home edition as an administrator, and we have no other accounts. I used the computer an hour before her and it worked fine. She doesn't remember exactly what happened, but when she went to log on, she thinks it gave her an error message and then loaded the desktop. The desktop did not have all of our icons on it, and the picture we used for the wallpaper was gone, and replaced by the generic one it had when we bought the computer. She rebooted the computer to try to get our settings back. The windows password worked fine (and still does), but our icons our still missing, we cannot find our pictures we had saved, our word documents are gone, our downloaded music is gone, and our favorites and default home page on internet explorer are all gone. The default home page is also the one we had when we bought our computer. When we go to Start, then all programs, we still have all of the programs we had before the problem occurred.     - Error trying to validate certificate - OCSP Server Error Hello All, recevied a root certifacte update yesterday and seemde to be wroking, but this morning I couldn't connect with any sites due to an error message during URL set up: "Error trying to vlaidate certificate from (web site name) using OCSP - Server error" Didn't know I was using OCSP, but that comes with being semi-tech and not a techno-geek I guess. Is this error mine, or does it belong to the site that I ws trying to access? Is it a synchronization problem perhaps with Windows Updates, PC users and the rest of the world, OR?     - Recomended Remote Management Suite Wondering if anyone can comment on what products they use to perform remote management of XP workstations. I've seen Dameware utilities and seems to be a very strong product (everything from remote control, remote registry control, remote service control, remote shell...), however having read about some of the more advanced features of Fractalia's Iriscene Remote Manager it appears to be a more evolved solution...     - www2.secureie.com - McAfee virus I could not find a reference to this in any google groups, so I'm doing my civic duty. This gets good, so read on. I got a message from my McAfee software(the little "M" in the task bar) that an update was available. I've had McAfee for 3 years now and thought nothing of it. I would then begin to notice that the fan on my laptop would roar to life and stay that way. The fan was doing its job, as it should. It was cooling the CPU, which was pegged at 100%. The laptop became a stove top sitting on my lap. I noticed in task manager that certain processes were hoggin memory, but none of them had an "mc" on the front of thier name, so I had no reason to suspect McAfee. The file that was hogging most of the memory was svchost.exe, which is a valid Microsoft system file called Servicehost.exe. I shut down all windows, rebooted several times and watched my pc and the processes in the TaskManager. Thats when I noticed that the moment McAfee came to life and put its little "M" in my task bar, my CPU would peg at 100%. I clicked the little "M" which takes you to the Security manager. I disabled everything I could. Rebooted. Problem solved. CPU was back at 4% or lower and the fan was nice and quite. Went back into Security manager which now had a "Fix All" button at the top. I clicked it, and the CPU pegged at 100% and the fan roared to life. I also got a new little icon in the task bar...a little red circle with an "X". I knew I'd found my problem, which pissed me off. But it gets better. I right clicked the little "M" and there was an option for customer support. When I did that...it took me to this bullshit, bogus page: ~http://www2.secureie.com/c/102/mcafee/lp4/0304_siepie_lp_02.asp? s=468_2137~ If you're curious and visit the web address above, dont click any of the links on it. Its not a trustworthy page. Its an adware page for products called Secure IE and Private IE. The page had very cheezy animations on it(animated .GIF) and I knew this was obviously not the McAfee Support web site. I went to the real McAfee support site and searched their online forums. I found many entries regarding my very issue. Each a bit different, but all the same; CPU pegged at 100 percent and the machine's fan roaring to life. Lots of the folks posted that they had tried getting support and some even had some fixes that they say worked. The McAfee programmers were in the posts as well, so they did indeed respond to the posts. One person person couldn't get fixed up no matter what he tried. The others seemed to be able to get fixed by un-installing McAfee and then running a small program that the McAfee support gave to them. Then they'd reinstall McAfee and it would work for them. The problem is....this is an anti-virus program that couldn't detect a virus on itself. I would think that at the very least, it should know when IT was being eaten alive. Luckily, my online renew is up in August,2007(next month) and I got online with an Account rep, thur their chat, and unsubscribed.     - How to suppress a password recovery disk Good afternoon. I have created a Password Recovery Disk for my WinXPHome (SP2) account. Now I would like to delete it, ie. to remove the possibility of resetting my account's password with this disk (without physically or logically damaging my disk, of course!). I have searched for this procedure both in Windows Help and on the Internet, but I have not managed to find any valuable information. Can anyone help me?     - Changing Membership Type Hi, I recentlyt tried to change a user account to Standard User (Power Users Group) when I clicked o.k it came up with an error message saying that the group name was unavailable then when I tried to logon as that user their name wasn't on the welcome screen and when I pressed ctrl+alt+del twice and tried to logon I was logged on as that user but their membership was Guest. The account only shows up in command prompt with the net user command. It doesn't show up in User Accounts or the user accounts control panel accesed by typing control userpasswords2 in Run. Without these I have no idea how to change the group membership of someone. Windows Xp Home Service Pack 2. No Network just a single computer. Please help! Thanks, Jake.     - Security Center Service disabled 1801 Event log I discovered the Security Center service was disabled when I wanted to "Change the way Security Center alerts me?". I went into Services, set the Security Center Service to Automatic, and started it. It was disabled again after a restart. Cleared the Event logs and went through the same steps above. Same result and the relevant Event log entries were: 5:48:54PM The Windows Security Center Service has started: Event ID: 1800 5:49:10PM The Windows Security Center Service has stopped: Event ID: 1801 Clicking on the link in the log window got me a "WE'RE SORRY" message (No information available at the current time).     - MS Updates failure Errors 0xf200 and 0xf201 Earlier today I had to repair my OS using the installation/repair CD. After that was completed I went to the MS Update website to see about downloading and installing the updates that were loss during the OS repair. The download and install of the MS installation tool was successful and I restarted my computer. After that I tried to download and install the 77 updates. About midway through the download I mistakenly cancelled the download (yes, I am an idiot). Then I went back to the MS Update website to start again. The download appeared to be working, but the installation failed. Only the successful installation of the MS Update Installer appears on the history page. None of the failed updates appear on the history page. I tried again, unsuccessfully. I checked the computer's log for one of the updates and found error messages 0xf200 and 0xf201.     - Password Protect Folders Hi ladies and gents! I am interested in password protecting my folders, as I have a laptop and will shortly be going to university so security will become a more prominent issue. I have thus far trialed several commerical third party password protect programs for my folders, as my file system is FAT32 so I cannot use the protect option under properties>sharing. However, these really are not what I had in mind, in the sense that you password protect a folder, then when you want to open it, you double click it, and enter the password, and the folder opens. Ok so far? Sure, apart from the fact that once you have done this, the folder remains unlocked and you must then right click it, select password protect and reset it. What I was looking for was something more along the lines of how you are able to password protect a word document. By this I mean, once you enter a password for the document, it remains a permanent feature until you deactivate it. The password prompt appears every time you try and open the file, it does not disappear after one use so you have to reset it. I know you think I am probably just lazy, but I am often in a rush and have been known to forget things on occasion, so I really do not want to run the risk of having to relock a folder every time I open, as it is the ones I use often that I most want to protect. If you guys could recommened a reliable third party software that allows me to put a permanent password on my folders that brings up a simple prompt whenever I want to open it without having to load up the entire third party software program, much in the same way as when you password protect a word document, that would be fantastic. I am at my wits end with trying and searching myself, and am frankly fed up with the third party software I have tried so far that I constantly have to keep re-entering the password for when I have finished viewing my folder and closed it.     - a registry problem will not let me install office 2003 or office 2 please can someone help? i am running xp sp2. When i try to install office 2003 or office 2000 i get the following error message HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\.pps\PersistentHandler. This stops the installation & reverves the process back to nothing. i have been using eusing regisrty cleaner for 4 months & have avg anti-virus installed. Also recently started using cyber defender internet security to remove spyware.both eusing & cyber defender have files in quaratine but nothing relating to the above mentioned error. Maybe. Then again, they might see each other as suspicious activity. Only
way to really know is try it, and if anything finds something, rerun the
test by itself to see if it's still found. Ymmv for sure.
Or, you may just get error messages.
