PC won't go into standby or hibernate by its own....

My PC won't go into standby or hibernate on its own after a preset time.
I still can manually bring the PC into standby/hibernate without any
problem.

Don't know where to start to fix this problem, hopefully someone can help me
out. I am running XP pro. Have all the latest drivers and MS updates
installed

Check your settings in your control panel - "power options".
The hibernate tab has a little check box and if it's grayed
out, there's a BIOS setting that needs to be changed.

Wireless mouse? Software attempting to update in the background? When
did the feature stop working and what happened between when it worked
and when it didn't?

The hibernate tab is there, I can manually put the PC in standby and
hibernate with no problem..thanks.

Thanks Bob..no wireless mouse or any other wireless devices connected. All
the settings are fine and the PC goes in standby and hibernation when done
from Start>shutdown. This is a new built PC and the problem has been there
ever since I got it running.

Tonight, can you disconnect the mouse, keyboard &
internet connection and then see if it .... sleeps?
(Are there any other external devices we should be
aware of?)

The system has to be truly idle, for it to "time out" and go to
sleep/hibernate. Perhaps bring up Task Manager, and watch the
performance tab to see what is is happening with the CPU. If you see
activity switch to processes, and sort on CPU and see what pops to the
top to identify the problem software.

What make / model of mouse / keyboard are you using? Microsoft
"drivers" and Logitech drivers are "known" to cause some problems with
not leyying the PC go into hbernation / standby.

the Microsoft DDK has a "sleeper" tool for debugging such issues.
(unfortunately can't give a direct link )
It logs power management queries issued by the OS and whether somebody
vetoes them.
So you can see if the timed standby is ever attempted.
