Passwords
I have just run software which analyses the hardware and software of a
computer. I was surprised to see passwords to ISPs and Outlook Express
accounts which, in use, are hidden by blobs. I already knew that it is very
easy to discover passwords to MS Office files. Access to passwords probably
goes much wider than this.
Let this be a lesson. You may not have a file containing all your passwords
for someone to steal your information. It is already on the computer just
waiting to be harvested, possibly remotely!
This strengthens the argument for removing and destroying the hard disk(s)
of any computer before disposing of unwanted computers.

Raid 1 and Drive Replacement
We currently have (2) 320GB drives set up as Raid 1. The drive is partioned
50GB for the boot partition and the remainder for data. We want to replace
the drives with (2) 500GB ones. We want to replace one and then use the
Intel Raid utility in Windows to rebuild it. When that is complete, we want
to replace the other one and do the same procedure. We would like to end up
with the additional space on the data partition. Will this work?

Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 does not work after hibernation state
Hello!
I have got an Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000. the LifeCam dies not work after the computer was
sent to hibernation and came back from it.
I have got other devices sticking in other usb hubs that function with no problems (usb flash
drive, a keyboard, external hard drive ).
When the cam was up and running prior to hibernation or while hibernation :-), everything will
be fine. Also, what I can do was to un-plug and to re-plug the cam to the same hub. That's but
no clue since I had to un-plug and to re-plug the cam each time. When I run the program after
hibernation with no prior preparation the cams image(s ) will not show up, but a black square
only and the green light on top of the cam does not flash
Was any one used to the problem and can help?
Thank you,

I disabled the internet explorer services. However, everytime I logon to the

Dell Inspirion refuses to charge battery.
The battery on my 2 year old, out-of-warranty, Dell Inspirion E1505 was
almost dead ( about 6 min. charge retention). A new Dell battery was
around 200$ and hence I bought a replacement battery from Kahlon
(guaranteed to be E1505 compatible) for half the price.
After I swapped in my new Kahlon battery my Dell beeped on boot-up and
issued a warning of the sort: "Unrecognized battery type; Will not be
able to charge". Pressing F1 allowed me to ignore this and continue. I
kept the AC charger connected for about 12 hrs to get the battery its
recommended initial charge. Subsequently I disconnected AC power and
proceeded to work on the battery till it drained fully (about 4 hours).
Laptop worked fine. (all the while the battery charging LED blinks
green/orange)
On next recharges same warning recurs. F1 allows me to bypass. Only
difference now the battery does not charge at all. On AC adapter
disconnect the laptop immediately dies. Double clicking on the power bar
gives me all the battery details including Amp-hrs, manufacturer etc.
Charge %age always remains at zero.
I have no clue how to fix this! I suspect its the right battery but some
Dell trick that prevents me from using anything other than their
expensive "official" battery. No proof but a strong suspicion. Unfair.
Debug steps so far:
1. Tried booting from a Knoppix Live Linux CD. Still same warning. Will
work only so long as I have the adapter. /proc/acpi/battery recognizes
all battery details. Charge %age remains zero.
2. Tried BIOS. No battery recalibration options. No user-changeable
battery settings at all there. Probably Dell "sanitized" the BIOS to
some custom-version.
3. Only one BIOS flash upgrade listed on Dell website for this model. Its
only an optional update. Too chicken to try it yet lest I end up with an
"expensive doorstop"
Any help at all is greatly appreciated! If I can help it I do not want
to pay Dell 200$ to inject new life into a laptop that cost $700 2 years
ago!

I have fitted a new hard drive and can access the old hard drive but I

If I simply copy programs across most do not activate. Is there a way

Both DVD drives not recognised
Hi
I have an XP Pro PC with two DVD drives a Sony and a LG DL.
Both were working fine a couple of weeks ago, last night when I tried to
burn a DVD Nero would not see either as a DVD drive, only CD drives, I tried
uninstalling Nero and reinstalling but that did not help.
I noticed that the drive appear correctly in Explorer as DVD/R DVD/RW but as
soon as I put a DVD in either they appear as "CD Drive" only.
Any ideas on what I can do about this?

disconnected, both power and data. Also have DVD drive disconnected.
Checked CMOS battery with multimeter, it's above 3V.
Also tried clearing CMOS with onboard jumper.
Tried reseating RAM.
Graphics and audio are onboard on this.
Almost certainly hardware fault but where to start, CPU, RAM, PSU or m/b

Any advice appreciated.

iTunes 7.6.x: Can't find, delete or Last Played custom genre non-DRM
Since upgrading from iTunes 4.9 to iTunes 7.6, I have been unable to
seach for or delete songs in my Music folder, or in any Playlist,
that
uses a custom genre.
These are non-Digital Rights Management songs (like free podcasts and
CD rips). I can view the songs in their custom smart playlist
folders,
I can play them in iTunes and on my iPod, but I cannot find them in
the iTunes Spotlight search, I cannot delete them in any view, and
they do not show a "Last Played" date even when I know they have been
played and other, non-custom genre files show a Last Played date.
None of these problems existed before upgrading (I didn't want to
upgrade from 4.9, but Apple forced me to do it to regain access to my
purchased songs).
I have an iPod mini and I keep all my songs on my iPod (with the
exception of purchased DRM songs downloaded from iTunes store, which
are in a folder on my computer). Windows XP SP2
Any ideas how I can force iTunes 7.6.x to treat my custom genre songs
like any other non-DRM song and allow search, deletion and play
history?

I used XP Disk Management to format a new 3x Panasonic DVD-RAM disc to

the folders with shortcut icons and the Explorer contents pane gains a

I've been looking for an answer for awhile now & can't seem to find

Windows will reload the drivers automatically. I don't have the disk

yes I've uninstalled the drivers but it didn't help. I also tried a

XP Installation problems- please help!
I have a laptop which was runnning Windows 2000 and I'm trying to
install Windows XP on it. I did manage to get it on but I must have
made some mistake somewhere as on startup it was giving me the option
to boot into either XP or Windows 2000.
Before explaining the current status I should just explain exactly
what I'd like to acheive ideally.
One hard drive (C) with the full amount of storage space (10GB)
running Windows XP. That's it! Nothing more, nothing less.
So I have tried to do a few things- deleting partition, re-installing
XP and now I'm really confused!
When I startup now, I get 3 choices from the boot screen:
Windows XP Home Edition
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows XP Setup
If I select Windows XP Home Edition it says:
Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware
configuration problem. COuld not read from the selected boot
disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the
Windows documemntation about hardware disk configuration and
your hardware reference manuals for additional information.
If I select Windows 2000 Professional it gets me into Windows 2000. If
I go to Computer Management>Disk Management there it reads:
C: 5GB FAT32 - Primary Partition
Unallocated 4.36GB
Right-clicking on either of these doesn't give me an option to either
delete or format.
If I try Windows XP Home Edition Setup it says:
Welcome to Setup
To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
Insert the CD labeled Windows XP Home Edition CD ROM
I then put in the disk and press enter.
I then get the following screen:
The following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned
space on this computer
9586MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MPR]
C: Partition1 (VAIONOTE) [FAT32] 5122MB 979MB free
Unpartioned space 4463MB
If I press 'D' on C, it says: Setup is unable to perform the requested
operation on the slected partition. This partition contains temporary
Setup files that are required to complete the installation.
'D' doesn't work on the unpartitioned space.
If try to set up on C, it says: The partition you have chosen is too
full to contain Windows XP which requires a drive with at least 1033MB
of free disk space.
I also have the following options:
To repair a Windows XP intallation using Recovery Console,
press R
To quite Setup without installing Windows XP press F3

Problem with PaperPort program
Hello everybody,
I have been using the Visioneer One Touch 8700 scaner with the
PaperPort 7.02 Deluxe program for years. Up to now everything was OK.
Suddenly in the Scan Info window located in the lower left hand corner
of the One Touch Visioneer Scan Manager Pro I got a red box with X
and according to the help it appears if the file size exceeds available hard
disk space.
But it is not true - the available space on all my partitions is surely enough.
For example now it is showing: Image Size: 2,83 MByte, Free Space 0kByte.
The image size changes depending on what I scan, the Free Space is equal
to 0 all the time.
At the moment I can scan anything using default parameters only.
When I try to change the parameters I get the following information:
ScanManager Problem
An unknown error has occurred.
The program has encountered an unknown error with the selected settings.
Reset the selected parameters and try again.
Scanning with default parametrs gives very low quality results.
I unstalled the PaperPort program and install it from the beginning but
it didn't help.
Please tell me how to get rid of the problem.

Syskey on USB drive
Hi, i have used Syskey on Floppy for years on customer Laptops. In
january this year a customer wanted to use syskey (on XP) without a
floppy. I have used USBDLM for mounting the USB devices to the drive
letter A.
USBDLM: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html
I configured, that a usb-drive with a specific name should always be
mounted to A, all others from G to J.
So you can make a backup to another usb-stick, change the name to force
the mount to A and use it in case of a broken or lost device.
My concern is:
if a usb-device is attached before a user is logged on to the machine
and this specific device was not plugged in bevore on this machine,
would it mount properly?
This problem occured a few days ago:
We used Pretec iDisk Diamond sticks. They are very small and handy. We
also used the type with 128MB, mainly for preventing to use the device
for other purposes as the logon process.
Now we had following issues:
The customer told me that he cannot log on to his laptop. The displayed
message tells "syskey not found on drive A. Please insert disk"
(Translation from german XP). I told him to use his backup-Stick (which
was created on the same machine a few weeks ago) and he was able to
logon. For investigation purposes i told him to plug in the "primary
stick". When he plugged it windows reacted like it was a
"new-and-never-bevore-plugged-in-device".
Messages with installing drivers and "device can now be used" appeared.
The next reboot, the "primary stick" worked again without problems...so far.
Any ideas what happened here? Tag: ramdisk or eboostr Tag: 330026

connected to the back of the box of the PC.It is to this hub that my
external HD is connected to. It may be added here that even if I connect
the HD direct to the port in the back still I get the same thing, but
insted of 8 ports I see only 4 ports. Tried different port direct in the
back but with the same message.
I do not know where should I connect my external HD in the port that has
the High speed connectivity? I need help to understand all this?
Please guide.

Lite-On CD-RW/DVD drive not burning
No matter which program I choose it doesn't recognize a blank disc and it's
not recognizing that the drive is writable.
Windows seems to, because the recording options are still available and they
are infact enabled.
I had this problem on my old computer, everything worked fine and then
suddenly the drive stopped working. I've had this computer and this drive for
4 years with no problem and suddenly it has a problem.
I'm deeply confused.
It's a Lite-On Combo SOHC-5236V
Driver date is 7/1/2001
Can't roll it back, not sure I should uninstall... Tag: ramdisk or eboostr Tag: 329996
Computer diagnostics other than PCPitstop?
I am looking for an online free computer diagnostics that works with AMD
hardware and windows XP.
I am familiar with PCPitstop but I think it is not up to date since it

Inaccessible hard drive
Have 2 WDC 80GB drives. Normally, I connect only one at time. They are on
removable trays. They connect via Promise 133 TX2 ide card. From this
point on, I'll call the first one IDE1 and the second one IDE2. IDE2, I
only connect to use as a target fro cloning purposes.
IDE1 has system commander circa 2002 as boot manager. System commander is
installed on a Windows ME partition as are its boot files and so forth.
During my usual copy routine from the system commander menu for
partitioning, found that IDE2 was inaccessbile. By that, I mean the LED on
the removable tray for IDE2 lights up and remains that way for eternity.
I've found same results using a Windows 98SE boot diskette, ME boot
diskette, Linux boot diskette (kernel panic), windows 98SE explorer, windows
ME explorer, XP SP2 explorer, WD boot diskette with WD hard drive tools.
What's unusual about it is that from the boot diskettes, the IDE2 is
accessed without me telling it do that. I've tried disabling onboard ide
and SATA via bios. Same results.
The only thing slightly different is when I put IDE2 in a firewire
enclosure. Using disk manager, gives me a message that its accessing the
IDE2. Then another message to please wait. Gave it 20 minutes, no change.
When I right clicked properties of the drive, then indicated to populate,
gave it another 20 minutes, nothing, I cancelled. A message popped up that
indicated that one of the partitions may be of Windows 2000 nature. PC has
never had 2K on it. What about this Windows 2000 thing?

Folder not accessible
Hi everyone,
A coworkers computer quit out of the blue yesterday, no display, no system
beeps, only spinning fans and hard drives. We are going to get the hardware
replaced, however wanted to ensure that we had all files saved. I put the
hard drive in another computer to transfer the files and his user folder
came up saying access denied. I created a new user account with his name on
my computer and still access denied. The main user folder was able to have
its security settings edited to allow entrance into the main folder, but all
below say that I don't have permission to change security settings. What
would be the next step into getting into those folders? We need his pst file
for outlook with all his contacts and e-mails. His files were set to private
as others were using the computer as well and we didn't want others getting
into information that they don't need. Any advice is appreciated!
