My CD rom is MITSU&MI CR-48XCTE and it does not read a disc when inserted.
The device manager and troubleshoot do not recognize a problem. (Drive F)

My DVD is IDE DVD-ROM16X This does read the disc, but I can not download
anything to the disc. It says I do not have permission to download and to
see the administrator - which I do not know what that means or how to gain
access to change so I can download to the disc. (I am the owner and sole user
of this computer) The device mangaer and troubleshoot do not recognize a
problem with this either. The drivers are updated on both and they have
worked in the past without any new additions being installed. (Drive E)

Have both disc drives just gone bad and I need new ones or is there
something I have accidently clicked on that the drives do not work

Thanks for your help.

For your CD Drive I would try a lense cleaner. It's just a CD with
two tiny brushes and you add a drop of lense cleaner
and run it a few times.

The Dvd drive is a different story. If you mean choosing the Dvd
drive as a destination for your downloads, I would first
download to a folder then from there try to burn the data to the Dvd. I
use XP CDBurner Pro which is free. Do a google
for it.
You can only use your Dvd drive as a floppy if you have a program
such as Nero InCD or Ahead DirectCD.
