    - ZP, Vista and KVM Is anyone using a KVM switch between an XP PC and a Vista PC that actually works and doesn't cost a huge amount? My monitor and both PCs have VGA and DVI connections. The keyboard and mouse are the common Microsoft Wireless Comfort keyboard 1.0A and Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0 which connect via a USB plug on a Microsoft Optical Desktop receiver. The receiver also has a blue PS2 plug which does NOT have to be connected to either of the PCs for the KB and M to work perfectly.     - Switching the Interrupt use in LPT Port Hi all i work in a company that uses 2 main applications - based on win xp pro. the application uses the LPT port in order to communicate between an external pedal and the 2 applications mentioned, but there is a difference in the way they do so. one application uses the lpt option "Never Use An Interrupt" while the other uses it under the option to "Use Any Interrupt assigned to the port" (to see what i'm talking about go to : Device Manager => Ports (COM & LPT) =>ECP Printer Port 'properties' => "Port Settings" Tab. ) now, we want both application to be able to work - based on user logon. meaning, a user logon - or even an earlier choice menu such as "Hardware Profile" menu should "Switch" those option to its wanted form. we tried to implement a registry change upon user logon but there is no change. further more - if we try to implement the registry change After user is logged on (manually) - the system announces that it cannot add those values to registry because the system probably uses those ports. we also tried to create 2 different hardware profile, but it does not change the way the lpt will handle interrupts, it can only determine weather the device is enabled or disabled. any ideas?     - Invereted comma key doesn't work properly, keyboard works fine on other computers Hi, Any assistance with this strange glitch would be greatly appreciated. No matter what keyboard I attach my Windows XP (Home) computer I have to press another key after pressing the inverted comma key to get the inverted comma to show up on the screen. The key works fine while in the BIOS screen or using a start up disk to get to MSDOS, but not in WinXP and nothing changes no matter what I do with keyboard device drivers (mind you, mostly my keyboards don't need any special drivers loaded). I can't get rid of this strange annoying glitch. What I suspect is that some basic keyboard driver is corrupt in my install. I have installed windows several times and the issue remains. This leads me to think that the corrupt file (if this is the problem) must be on the original CD. But I have no idea where to get an "uncorrupted" copy of this file and how to update it.     - Write protected DVD-RAM I have aquired a new laptop recently and have come up against a weird problem. The laptop (HP DV6000) is equipped with an optical drive that is supposed to read and write DVD-RAM discs. I have a few of these so I decided to use one to store my digital photos on. However when I try, I get an error message that the disc is write protected. If I try to reformat the disc, I get a similar message telling me the disc is write protected. What gives?     - changing the fan cooler on my video card I want to change the fan on my model ATI FireGL X2 AGP Pro graphics card, and I want know if it's possible to take off the existing fan cooler and sticking another cooler fan on it? I thinking about buying the Zalman VF900-Cu VGA Cooler, or the VF700-Cu VGA Cooler made by Zalman. If anyone knows what that ATI FireGL X2 is like, it seems a bit hard or impossible to take off the cooler? I'm not sure, I never looked at it in that way to study to take off the cooler. I'm about to soon. I asked this question in a hardware group especially for this question and didn't get a response. I get better replies here, by much more.     - wireless multimedia keyboard 1.1 software won't install Just bought this wireless optical desktop 1000. Intellipoint software installs just fine. The software for the keyboard starts to install, gets about 1/5 of way and stops with an error message "Setup cannot continue because either there is insufficient hard disk space or an unexpected error has occurred. Please free the necessary disk space, and run Setup again. For system requirements refer to product packaging" OK so there's 3GB left on a 70GB disk. I downloaded the latest software from the Microsoft site and tried that with same result. Replaced the hardware - same result. Is this about space or something else. Can anyone help, please?     - Driver Update Fails "Access Denied" Hello I have a Toshiba Satellite M70 FE5 notebook running Windows XP Hom Edition SP3.     - Drive Upgrade with Acronis BIOS Error Using Win XP Pro on an IBM Thinkcentre w/40 gb drive. I backed up the 40gb to a USB drive using Acronis 10 and made a boot CD. I replaced the 40 gb with a new 320 gb and booted to acronis on the CD. Restored the C: partition, rebooted and received a BIOS error about the hard drive change, saved config and rebooted with no errors. Everything seems to be working OK but about every 2nd or third time I reboot, I get the same hard disk error from the bios (1776 I think). Continue to boot works ok and still no sign of a problem once I get into execution. Any suggestions as to why the error pops up erratically? and is there a utility that would verify the upgrade is successful other than running a few programs? I ran the Office 'Detect and Repair' that validates all the office components successfully with no detected problems.     - Memory Pairs I just read a post on a web site by a credible computer guy who says that even though RAM in a Pentium 4 does not have to be installed in pairs, like EDO did, it is still better to install identical pairs. That is, it's better to have 2 1GB memory modules (PC3200 in this case) than 1 2GB module. Is he correct? The reason I ask is that a lot of my computers only have two DIMM slots, such as my wife's notebook computer. It came with one 256MB module. I have NEVER used a bios password and did not this time either. However, when I pressed "DEL" to enter bios it was password-protected.     - Reboot Needed After USB device plugged in I am using Win XP SP3 on a Pentium M based laptop. I have just noticed that all of a sudden plugging in a new USB device requires the computer to reboot before I can use the device. For example, I just bought a new USB flash drive. When I plugged it in for the first time, the driver is found, it is installed and then I get a requester informing that the driver's installed by may not function properly until the computer is rebooted. And indeed: until the reboot, the drive is not visible to windows. Once the reboot is done, the device starts working properly when plugged in. This has happened with three such new devices (presentation controller etc. another flash drive). It would never happen before: in the past I was able to start using a new flash drive immediately.     - Processor temperature problem My MB is Socket 478 for Intel P4 processor, Intel 845GV chipset; Intel Celeron 2.66GHz CPU ( Processor core: Prescott-256 ) The CPU temperature constantly stay near 57 - 59?C that seems abnormally to me. I just asked some tech specs, and they told, that this CPU model usually is heated and noisy (as fan constantly tries to cool the CPU). I am not sure is this correct.     - Linksys Router disconnects constantly I have a Linksys WRTP54G router. I'm running multiple wireless devices from it plus 3 wired PCs. Recently it has started to provide totally unstable wired connections. The PCs are constantly complaining that "A Network Cable is Unplugged". Sometimes it comes right back, other times not. This happens on all the wired PCs, while the wireless connections remain totally stable. I've tried power-cycling the router, re-ordering the connectors, unplugging various PCs, switching out the actual cabling, resetting the computers, resetting the cable modem, etc. I have no idea what precipitated this, either.     - cordless mouse and problems after Service Pack 3 I installed Service Pack 3 yesterday, and now my cordless mouse creates a complete shutdown. After the installation, at startup, I got a blue screen. I started in safe Mode that seemed to work, so starting up again in regular mode gave me blue screen. By accident (or divine intervention) I unplugged the mouse stick and started up and it went through. I plugged the stick back in and immediately got the blue screen. Unplugged it, stated it, put in a memory stick into the same USB port, no problem. plugged the mouse stick back in - blue screen. SO- I removed the mouse driver and am working without it.     - New Hard Drive = simple volume I just purchased a new IDE HD and installed it in my desktop to format it. I want to take it out and put it in my USB enclosure for a larger backup. Normally Windows will see the new hardware and walk me through setting it up. And it did. Since it was an IDE and all of my other drives are SATA it came up as Drive 0. Not Drive 2 (3rd). Anyway XP saw the drive, ask me if I wanted to convert and initialize it (convert was a bit odd, I've never seen it, but I accepted it). I Okay'd that and then it gave me only one option for 'volume'. I clicked on that and it let me determine the size (full size used) and label and NTFS format. I did and its working fine. The question is, the SATA drives are #1) split into 2 partitions, logical and Primary, #2) is just a primary partition. This new one came out as a 'simple volume'. First time I've seen this, what is a simple volume and what is it going to do when put in the USB enclosure? I've looked at google and I see that its a valid format, and it calls it a dynamic disk, simple volume. I still don't see much explanation of the pros and cons of such a format.     - DVD success and query Thanks to people on this newsgroup, I learned that what I thought was only a CD burner (in my 5-year-old Dell desktop computer) is really a DVD burner as well and that it accepts DVD+R disks. Yesterday, I bought some disks, and today I burned one, using Easy CD Creator 5, the free software that came with my computer. The process was slow, but it worked; I'm very grateful for all the help! One question: When I burned CDs with this program, I was able to finalize the CD as well as the session. Now "finalize CD" is grayed out and all I can do is "finalize session; don't finalize CD."     - printer problem We just upgraded to windows xp from windows 98. We have an hp laserjet 4L printer that was functioning with no problems under win98. After upgrading to xp it no longer functions. Also, the lpt1 port is not listed in the Device Manager (it only shows com1).     - operating system I bought a gateway solo 9500 laptop computer with missing harddrive and missing restore disk 1. Installed new harddrive and xp home edition operating system. When I turn the the computer on I get the gateway logo but thats it. Msg states no operating system. However when I put the restore disk 2 in and reboot I have to hit Install windows. Once I get started I get msg error code 2405 invalid drive number specified. I hit ok and windows xp loads. Why can't I get pass the gateway welcome screen and to windows. Its loaded on the computer.     - SM Bus Controller I had to reinstall Windows XP Home on a Dell Dimension 2400 because i was running incredibly slowly. Ended up with Yellow ?!s beside several devices when I checked Devic Manager. Fixed everything (by pointing 'Update Driver' to wha appeared to bethe correct folder under C:\Drivers) However, nothing works for this item (SM Bus Controller). Then, the some drivers have disappeared. When i try to install again from http://support.acer-euro.com/, any is ok. I've intalled all drivers for this model (5610) which give me acer, and I can never intall them. There are (in this moment) 4 drivers to install: the ethernet and the wireless, and the 945 express chipset, and SM bus controller. Can you help me?     - Optical Mouse Sticks I have a Dell cordless optical mouse. Lately it's starting to "stick". That is, the mouse pointer on the screen doesn't always move.     - New Motherboard, New and Old Drivers.. Hi folks, Recently I had to replace my motherboard and its drivers on-disk as well. However I've been having to weed out the old drivers despite having performed Uninstalls as well as reg scans to eliminate the obsolete stubs present. I had several instances where old mobo drivers are still being installed when "removed", and cause some trouble with, for instance, Tabletworks (Calcomp Drawingboard III) firing up at the apparent same time as Realtek audio software (mobo) on the taskbar. Even deleting all devices and letting the automatic Found New Hardware wizard do its thing has not resolved this, and I've noticed some folders containing old drivers under C:\WINDOWS that I don't really want to delete, lest I generate a situation requiring a complete scratch install.     - No sound card in Sounds & Audio Devices I have a Dell Dimension 4600 running XP Pro SP2. In Device Manager | Sound, Video and Game Controllers it shows the built-in SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio sound card. The properties dialog shows that the device is working properly. However, in Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices on the Audio tab I do not see the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device in the playback device drop-down or in the sound recording device drop-down list. The only thing in the playback device drop-down list is Microsoft RDP Audio Driver. The sound recording device drop-down list is empty. I uninstalled the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device in Device Manager then restarted Windows. The device was automatically detected and reinstalled but that did not solve the problem. How can I get the SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio device to appear in the device drop-downs on the Audio tab of the Sounds & Audio Devices dialog? Thanks. -- .Bill.     - Slow Startup after installing new SATA Hard Drive I just installed a new SATA Hard Drive two days ago, after it was installed I always get slow startup. 1-3 minutes at Window XP Screen, then about 5-10 mintues after Welcome screen. For more information: The SATA HD type is Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB. This is the first SATA HD that I installed in my PC. I had other two HD which is IDE (ATA) HD. One of them is which I installed my Windows. The SATA HD shows up as ST316021 5AS SCSI Disk Device. There are SCSI/RAID Host Controller and VIA SATA RAID Controller installed. The SATA HD doesn't appear as Master/Slave in BIOS. (Is this normal?) I don't know this is related or not, after I installed the new SATA HD,my other HD which Windows was installed shows an abnormality in SMART Value. I wonder if the new SATA HD stressed HD especially on startup/bootup so it caused physical damage to my other HD. There still also another possibilities about what caused this too but I want to set these aside first. Could someone tell me how to solve the slow bootup and this problem?     - Raid0 imminent failure During boot, instead of the 2 Raid drives reading 'member disk' in green, one read 'Error Occurred in red. Windows loaded normally but a new icon appeared in the tray reading: RAID volume errors Some data requests to a hard drive in a RAID0 volume failed but a backup may be possible. please try to back up data immediately'. I've spent the last couple of hours backing up everything in sight. But the strange thing to my mind is that both drives are whisper quiet. The only drive I've ever had fail in the past screeched and rattled quite a bit before finally packing in but these two sound fine. Is the message I've had always a warning of imminent drive failure or might it be a failure of the RAID array of some sort? Can arrays ever become corrupted?     - canon scanner Cannon CanoScan LIDE 500F Win XP Home SP2 2gig Ram 2.46ghz Pentium Problem: When viewing a scanned image there is a 25mm wide grey/black line in the middle from one end of the scanned image to the other. After a further 4 scans the unit failed to operate and a prompt appeared {please slide the lock button to the unlock position and disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to restart} With no success, the unit is connected and working ok according to the device manager and when unplugged the device disappears so there is no problem with the cable or software as I've even tried reinstalling it.     - choosing a DVD burner I've decided, with help from people here, that I can install a DVD burner in my 5-year-old Dell desktop computer (with Windows XP SP3 and an IDE internal hard drive) rather than having it done at a local shop. Newegg sells the "Pioneer 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE Model DVR-115DBK - OEM." Is this drive likely to be a good fit with my computer? (I don't need a slim drive, right?) Also, does "OEM" mean it's missing something that a non-OEM drive would have? One of the reviews said the drive doesn't come with software--but the same was said of at least one other burner that was listed as "Retail." With time it became obsolete for the use I wanted to give it and I bought a brand new one but I consider that my old machine is a good equipment and that my nephews could still use it and I wanted to give it to them but without the burden of so many old programs that make its start up to take too long. So I thought of formating it and reinstalling the whole XP but I haven't been able to do it. I changed the boot sequence to start with the CD and I also enabled the Installing OS (or something like that) option but still when I turn on the computer with the cd labeled as "Operating System" and having the Dell logos and stuff, it starts normally and loads the whole Win XP without giving me the option to format. I also tried to format form Windows with the Win Explorer pointing at D: and rightclicking on C and choosing Format, but after it tells me that this action will erase all data and I agree, another message telling me that it can not be formatted for the drive is being used. Can anyone tell me how do I proceed to format this drive? Apparently it is a hardware problem by which the computer doesn't do what i wannted it to do.     - Problem with integrated Smartcard reader I'm hoping I am in the right place for my problem. I recently installed a Dell USB keyboard which has a smartcard reader built in. Running Win XP Pro SP2. As soon as I plugged it in XP recognized the board and reader and installed Windows drivers for both. I have SD0, SD1, and SD2 CardReader Disk Drive entries in my Hardware Manager, and they all show as working properly. I have a smartcard that I know works on an ACR38 reader (which I do not have), but I can't "see" this card on my system. At a minimum, should I be able to see a drive entry of some sort in File Manager for the CardReader "drive"? Even though XP installed its own drivers, do I need to install the Dell-supplied card reader driver? I'm trying to figure out how to see it at XP's level before trying my application software.     - dell e520 usb mouse doesn't work Hi, I have a Dell E520 with a usb mouse and keyboard. It all worked fine. Now Keyboard works, mouse doesn't. Tried to boot into safe mode still no mouse, but keyboard works. Switched mouse and still doesn't work. Switched usb ports, mouse still doesn't work, but keyboard works. Dell doesn't know what to do and says to return it. Before I do that I wanted to ask the "real" experts. You guys are great and have helped me tons in the past.     - NEC 870 Won't Change Protocol IP Address I have a NEC870 printer that was working as a network printer using a Hawking print server and a Linksys wireless router. The router failed and was replaced by an Airport Extreme router. While working with the Linksys, the NEC870 had an IP Address of 192.168.1.102 on my lan. The airport extreme uses a 10.0.x.x numbering system for the IP addresses on my lan. Since the NEC870 has a NIC, I wanted to connect the NEC 870 to the Airport Extreme using one of the Extreme's ethernet ports. The problem is I can't access the NEC870's network administration,which is usually done by using a web browser and the IP address of the printer. The printer won't reset to factory defaults. I have followed the directions in the NEC network user's guide to reset the printer, i.e., turn off the printer, hold down the operator panel button and then turn the power back on. The printer still prints out a network settings page with the IP address from my linksys lan (192.168.1.102). The second method, using network administration is not available because there is no longer a 192.168.x.x lan. I tried turning off the power, disconnecting the NIC, powering up the printer, then turning off the power, reconnecting the NIC and powering up again, but the network settings page still reports the same 192.168.1.102 IP address. Is there some other way to force the printer to return to default settings? If not, the printer is useless as it can not be connected to a pc. It's not the best printer ever, but it still has a useful life and I don't like to discard hardware until it is totally useless.     - Another Computer Shutting Down Randomly I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with this fault on my PC. For anyone who has difficulty getting to sleep at night or who has an afternoon to spare, I've listed all the symptoms and my actions and findings below. In addition to that, I've also tried the very helpful suggestions made by Michael W Ryder, Anna and Paul in response to daviddschool's message "Computer shutting down randomly" on 30/5/08, including running Prime 95, but have found nothing obvious. THE KIT Motherboard MSI MS6743 Processor - Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott) 3.4 GHz with hyper threading enabled. RAM - 4 X 1GB DDR-SDRAM Graphics - Nvidia GeForce 6200 Sound - Soundblaster Live! 24 bit HDD - Samsung 500GB SATA 2 (Replaced a 300GB SATA Maxtor and 200GB IDE Seagate drives which were in use when fault first appeared) OS - Windows Media Centre Age - 3 Years Overclocking - No part of the PC has ever been overclocked THE FAULT PC just falls over at random - can be after a few minutes or hours or can be whilst starting up. CONDITION AFTER FALLING OVER Screen goes blank (Monitor generated message "Entering Sleep Mode" message appears on screen, followed later by "No Video Input") There is NO thud in loudspeakers when system falls over All fans continue to run and all LEDs on MB and LAN remain lit or flashing All voltages (measured with digital voltmeter) are spot on and the same as before falling over Reset button not effective. No amount of key presses or mouse abusing brings the PC back to life. Only way to restart is to press power button for several seconds to turn device off On re-powering up, PC might startup but often falls over between the black Windows screen and the blue Welcome screen which follows it. THINGS I'VE NOTICED If I start in Safe Mode it doesn't fall over. If I run a game (a large game like Silent Hunter - not Solitaire or Freecell, etc) it doesn't fall over, even after several days. This is also the case if I run the game in a window instead of full screen. THINGS I'VE TRIED (System tested after every action and fault still there) Removed SP3 Tried to use System Restore but failed every time, no matter what date I tried to restore to. Have used System Restore a few weeks ago and it worked OK then. Changed PSU Removed top 2GB of RAM Replaced bottom 2GB of RAM with previous top 2GB Replaced CPU fan and sink Disconnected FDD & DVD drives Disconnected each HDD in turn Disabled all startups and services in MSCONFIG Removed sound card Removed graphics card *By this time, the Microsoft piracy protection kicked in and told me that I had 3 days to reactivate Windows. I assumed that when I put everything back this demand would be lifted, but it wasn't. Bought a new SATA HDD and installed a new, clean OS Ensured all unneeded onboard devices disabled. Even swapped the monitor. I'm lost now and don't have a clue what else to do. I suppose it must be a hardware fault as I've completely changed the software, but I don't understand the fact that it doesn't fall over whilst in safe mode or while a game is active. The game doesn't have to be in full flow, just having it sat there ticking over is enough to keep the PC happy. The only H/W I haven't changed are the CPU and the MB. As these are £90-ish each, I want to have a good idea which one is faulty before I break open the piggy bank. It's getting harder to get it started at all now. Can anyone PLEEEEEEEASE help. In trying to install the audio drivers for my motherboard I've gotten XP
totally confused. When I first installed the driver CD that came w/ my
motherboard it showed as Realtek AC97 but there was no sound. I then tried
having XP search the net for a better driver and it now shows as Via. Is
there a way I can remove all of the cached driver info and start having XP
detect the hardware from scratch?

Open device mgr,expand the sound tree,R.click the hardware one at a time,
select "uninstall" do for all listed w/o restarting pc,once
thru,exit,shutdown pc
for 10 sec. or so,start pc.XP will reinstall on restart.
