    - Can a USB-only Seagate portable drive be turned off when not needed? I have a USB Seagate portable drive with 120 GB. Can Windows XP SP2 turn it off when it isn't in use? At least when the computer is hibernating would help.     - Used space on hard drive Hi, Vista Home Premium, 1.8g processor with 1g RAM, Packard Bell machine in England. If I go 'Computer' I get the usual list of 'C drive', 'DVD drive' etc. If I right click the C drive, properties, it tells me that I have 75gig used. If I then open the C drive folder and get the list of what's in it, Program Files, Users, Temp etc and highlight all of the contents, right click them and select 'Properties' again it tells me that I have 17.5gig used which I think is about right. I know for sure that I don't have 75gig used, but the machine is telling me that I have. I've put lots of massive video files (45g plus) onto the machine from DV camcorders and also from ripped DVD's but all these have been deleted. I usually edit these files as necessary then transfer them to one of three external hard drives, then delete them from the machine. I use Webroot Window Washer to 'wash' the hard drive. I've done everything that I know, defragging, virus checking (Norton), spyware checking (AVG), washing empty space with Window Washer but it still tells me I have 75gig used. Ay ideas? TIA, Alan.     - HOW TO INSTALLL Hi, I'm pretty much experianced when it comes to formatting and installing systems, I can also install hardware too, but when it comes to installing and setting a wireless connection I'm at a total loss. As I don't know exactly how to ask this question on the microsoft support site, I'm asking here for someone to direct me to an appropriate site and or documentation where I can read and learn how to do what I want to do. What do I want to do? Glad you asked! My main computer (a desktop) is connected to the internet on an adsl line using a standard adsl modem. I want to setup a wireless internet connection for my laptop. Both machines are using XP Home. The only thing I know at this stage is that my standard adsl modem will have to changed.     - Problem with my AMD Phenom 9600 and XP Hello Everyone! I recently bought myself a Amd Phenom 9600 processor and after i installed it i reinstalled windows xp but the thing is that when i reinstalled xp it was hung up on "34 minutes remaining" for about 30 min (when it installs the HW before you type in your serialnumber and such). Ok, it tought this was just something with the installer and the phenom processor but when i rebooted my computer it took around 30 minutes there too and it does everytime i try to reboot it. I have installed the proper drivers for the processor and motherboard but it dosent work anyway, its still a 30 min boot-time. Anyone knows if this can be solved? The Kernel Memory Pages shows 33460 while watching Foxnews Video: http://www.foxnews.com/video2/ The CPU 2.6 Ghz runs up to 75% - 100% most times while watching Video on IE 7.x. How do you determine when you need to add more RAM chips or a Video card? This PRESARIO S5100NX has 512RAM with onboard Video. The taskmgr shows Physical Memory: 515608. When watching VIDEO on IE 7.x the Available memory gets down to 65000. If I buy more hardware, Video Card with 256MB and more RAM; 1024 that should help it. But my main question is by watching TaskMgr how do you know when the Memory is used up so much you need to buy more RAM?     - Keyboard special keys work until new hardware is found Been trying to get my new MS wireless laser keyboard 6000 v2.0 working completely. The old standard keys all work. But the new ones like volume control do not. The latest thing I've found is that if I go into device manager and uninstall the two HID Non-User Input Data Filters and one USB Human Interface Device and the reboot, the volume control key works at first. After a new hardware found message. While it works I hear disk activity. Then I get the message that new hardware has been found and the volume control indicator on the screen fades away and will not return. Does this make any sense to you?     - How to assign drive letter Hi, I recently re-installed windows XP and my internal slave drive does not show up in Explorer. I was told assigning a drive letter should fix this problem. I opened the Disk Management tool and see the drive - shows it is "healthy" and "active", but when I select it the option "change drive letter and assign paths" is not selectable. Also it does not indicate what filesystem it is and the drive size is ~190G compared to the actual size of 320G. Appreciate any help on how to fix this.     - Found New Hardware wizard won't quit i have just purchased a second printer. I need a laser printer because my mutlifunction is causing me to go broke with the cost of cartridges...that's neither here nor there. So i want to install this Samsung Laser Printer. I plug it in, the system sees it and starts the process of instailing it. The Found New Hardware wizard says it found it, but it can not install it this hardware, there is a problem installing the device, the system could not find the file specified. Yet, when i go to the printer list in the c panel, there it is. and to boot it works. I have downloaded the updated drivers from the samsung site, i have tried to install it in safe mode. I've uninstalled, reinstalled and updated the drivers as much as i could. I have even been able to get the wizard to start all over again and directed it to the correct location of the driver file. It sees it, it does its thing and then again i get this message. I can hit finished until i'm blue in the face and the error message keeps popping up. I removed the driver.cab file and reinstalled it from the WIndows XP disc. (something about the updates, may have corrupted something or other according to microsoft knowlege base) and i have been on the phone with tech support at Samsung 3x. (tier 2, i might add). I have unplugged the thing and replugged it into a different port. I have unplugged everything except for the samsung printer and the same messgae keeps popping up. A search of HP sites provided the following = incompatibility message with data modem for HSDPA access (3.5 G) :- "The notebook is not compatible with several types of PCMCIA cards from different vendors.     - More hard drive questions I upgraded my maxtor HD to a 320Gb Deskstar. Bad idea! The deskstar faulted within minutesof installing it and was RMAd. So far so good. the drive they have replaced it with is a refurb. It has installed ok but it's running at 50oC outside the case whilst doing no work. I paid for this program maybe 9 years ago and it has since become freeware so it's not a licensing issue. I sucessfully ripped 3 discs worth of music then all of a sudden the program wouldn't read anymore discs. I uninstalled and reinstalled, I found every last file of the program and did it again and again. I always get the same result. It won't read my music discs anymore. I donwloaded a program called ASPI check. It didn't find any of the ASPI files on my computer so I downloaded yet another program to replace the missing ASPI files that this program needs windows to have. The program still will not work, it recognizes the drives and tells me they are both there, the ASPI drivers are in their correct places but the program still will not read. I can't even get the cd's to play in either drive. I can play a movie and any dvd but I can't get the drives to read the cd's any longer. Has anyone ever had this problem and/or know of a solution? I'm dead in the water with this one. Problem number 2 is that This is my newer computer that has XP Pro and I somehow lost the recovery discs...I have XP HOME recovery discs from my other pc but I have no idea what will happen to my work or my files if I reverted back to HOME.     - DVD Drive Problems My DVD drive has been going on the fritz recently and I can't figure out what's up. First of all, XP (SP2) reports it as a CD Drive instead of a DVD drive. And It won't play any content - I've tried both a DVD movie and a CD game (both of which used to work on this machine).     - Disable sub-pixel hinting? I really like the font smoothing provided in Windows XP, with one exception... Windows does sub-pixel hinting - uses the red or blue pixel to create a "1/3 pixel". While this is OK most of the time, sometimes I will get extreme color artifacting around smoothed fonts. The characters may correct themselves if I select the area, or minize/restore the window, but it's annoying to seel. Also, my monitors rotate. I ended up with the Hauppage HVR-1600-MCE card with the subject line remote and IR receiver. Here is the probelm: The card installs and appears to work fine as does the software. The remote on the other hand appears to have no drivers. Since I have never done it before converting the 32-bit INF into something 64-bit would be quite a challenge, but I am willing to do it if it will work. I am hoping that someone here somewhere knows if there is an MS driver for this remote already in 64bit or can help me make the 32bit one into a 64bit recognizable file so that it will load and see if it works.     - No more trackpad and sound after WinXP re-install Hi, I had to replace the crashed HD on my Dell Inspiron 8200. No technical problem there. Then I reinstalled WinXP (with SP1) from the original CD that came with the laptop. Then (after setting up the network and accounts) I installed SP2 and all Win patches, all applications, and got the documents back from the backup. Well, since this reinstall I have no more trackpad & mini-joystick, and the built-in sound is absent (even with a headphone). Though it will probably work,if you are transferring data you will find that
whatever might
have taken a few minutes with a USB2 connection
will take many hours on USB1.1
So I'd definately put a USB2 card in the desktop machine
