new (or old) cd drive doesn't recoginize cd's
I tried to install a replacement cd burner (Liteon LH-20A1P) in my older AMD
Athlon XP 1700+ computer. The installation and auto driver install seemed to
go OK, but it would not recoginize a cd (audio ar data) when it is put in.
If the cd was already in the drive when the computer is re-booted it seems to
read or play just fine. When that cd is ejected and another put in it won't
see it without another shutdown/restart. I re-installed the original drive
and now it has the same problem. I tried: deleting and re-loading drivers;
attaching both drives at the same time (switching between master and slave);
put new drive in another computer(seemed to work OK); went back to a couple
of older system "restore" dates. The "Liteon" tech support dropped me like a
hot potato when the drive worked in another computer. Now I'm looking for

Hard drive error
What signifies this SCANDISK messge ?
(in Phase 1, I think, no later than Phase 2)
"Windows was unable to complete the task"
This is on a Dell-built WinXP(2SP) PC, running
as slow as molasses -- that did not get up to normal
speed when I removed several boot loads, e.g.
Norton and Dell Help Systems -- so I cleared off
junk files with a view to defragging. Then SCANDISK
would not complete.
DOS CHKDSK /F reports
1. Fixed 2 corrupt attribute records.
2. Cannot continue in read-only mode.
What does this mean? Is the OS stuck in what
Win98 would have called DOS compatibility mode?
I should be grateful for advice for
1. diagnosis
2. cure.

My primary IDE is listed under "unknown"

During the boot-up sequence, I receive the error message
Unable to initialize 2000017 (I may not have the exact number of
zeros...)
When I click ok on the message, the boot process continues and
everything appears to work fine.

xp crashes every time I insert a dvd or cd
Every time I insert a DVD or CD my computer srashes to blue screen. I have
recorded the error codes and they vary every time it crashes.
Anyone got any ideas what going on?
This happened out of the blue without any new software installation. Outside

One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned
I just purchased a Magellan 4250 GPS, when I connected it to my
systems I get a "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has
malfunctioned" or something like that. I get this on my Avertec 2370
laptop both when I connect it to one of the USB port on the laptop and
to a powered USB hub. I then went downstairs to my Dell Precision 390
and connect it to the USB port (actually to both) and get the same
error. Both system are running XP Pro. I assumed that I had a
defective GPS. Took it to work where I have a HP Kayak running Windows
2000 where I have installed a USB 2.0 / Firewire PCI card (since
computer only had USB 1.1 support). Plugged the GPS into one of the
USB ports, came up like a champ.
Now I am confused, what should be my next step. I could always do my
custom POI update here at work, It is just unsettling to have two very

Hi,
I've just done a reinstall on a laptop. How can I assign the function keys
for Brightness etc ? Do I need the drivers ? It's a Tiny N18and I might
struggle to get the correct drivers.

How hard to run BOINC?
Are there any guidelines about how hard a CPU can be run and for how
long and/or how to tell if a CPU is overheating?
The other day, I downloaded BOINC to run on an old laptop that I
mostly use for testing shareware. It's an HP Omnibook 6000.
BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is the
software that allows various compute-intensive projects such as SETI
(Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) to ships small pieces of
the computations out to PCs around the world to sop up their idle
cycles. (Probably everyone already knew that.)
BOINC allows me to set various parameters that control how much of my
PCs resources it will use. One parameter controls the percentage of
the processor. I can set it from 10% to 100% in 10% increments.
It looks like BOINC achieves the throttling back by starting and
stopping the calculations. The Task Manager Performence graph is kinda
fun to watch. Each little grid on the graph appears to be about 5
seconds wide. BOINC completes about two cycles each grid.
I have done a little testing at various settings.
At 100%, the fan comes on tight away and runs continuously. The bottom
of the laptop gets fairly hot to the touch -- not so hot that I can't
stand it, but close.
At 90% & 80%, the fan comes on and runs continuously, but the laptop
doesn't feel quire as hot.
At 70%, the fan is on almost all the time. It occasionally shuts off
for a few seconds. I just tested it and it did not shut off at all for
10 minutes.
At 60%, the fan is on about 90% of the time.
At 50%, the fan is on about 65% of the time and the laptop is cooler
to the touch.
At 40%, the fan is on about 30% of the time.
At 30%, the fan comes on occasionally for a few seconds.
At 20% and 10%, the fan never comes on.
Is it safe to run BOINC continuously (24/7) at 100%? If not, what is
the highest level that can I run it continuously without damaging the
processor?
Would it be better to measure the actual processor temperature? If so,
what is the best way to do that? My hand is not a reliable

Hard Drive does not get an assigned letter????
I have noticed that this question has been asked a few times, but I can't
find a solution that works. I had two hard drives in my computer that
functioned properly before my master drive (C:) became corrupted and I needed
to format and reinstall the OS (Win XP Home). I saved everything I needed to
my slave drive (D:).
I have since reinstalled everything onto my master drive (with the slave
still installed, this may have been a no-no) and now 'My Computer', or
'Explorer' will not recognize the drive nor assign it a drive letter. Disk
Manager sees the drive just fine but will not allow me to change the drive
letter (change drive letter is grayed out). Device manager also recognizes
the drive and both utilities say everything is fine.
Now........originally the master drive had Norton Go Back running, and it
probably left some traces of itself on the secondary drive. Problem is I
cannot remove anything from the secondary drive now because I can't see it.
I did not uninstall Go Back before I formatted the master drive because I did
not realize that it was a problem and I have not reinstalled Go Back on my
reformatted master drive. The main drive is a Maxtor PATA 40GB drive and the
slave drive is a Western Digital PATA 40GB drive

Sony DRX-840U DVD/CD rewritable drive problems
When using DLA to write DVDs, the computer crashes when either the "Make
compatible" option is chosen, the "Eject" option is chosen or the eject
button is touched. Any fixes?

The strange thing is that this event (and two similar ones) were generated
overnight while the drive was not used at all. It was plugged in and
switched on and there was an Explorer window open on the root folder but the
disc was not being used for any reading or writing at all.
Neither drive have a windows page file - so it must be ordinaryaccess to the
drives causing the warnings to pop up.
I have looked at the MSKB article relating to this warning and have even
taken the time to decode the error blocks (establishing that both drives
generate the warning for read and write actions a number of times a day, the
situation is resolved with a retry - only one retry seems to be required).
The block above (first byte Ox04) is about writing to the disk - why would
Windows be writing to a disk when none of the files on the disk were in
use - and certainly not for writing?
Could this be to do with the drives automatically going in to powersaving
mode and taking a while to wake up when a request is sent?
Any suggestions gratefully recieved as these warnings are really irritating.

XP Home cannot find cd Drive
I have XP Home Evesham Laptop and i believe a Sony cd drive ( i can no longer
find any reference to it in my laptop). This drive is not being recognised
and thus cannot use any cd/dvd. I used the fix for cd drive when cd burning
is removed as I had recently uninstalled Itunes and although this worked for
2 days it has now disappeared again and the fix is no longer working when i

Right-clicking several songs to play, freezes system
Whe I right-click one song to play it takes about six seconds to start Player
11. On more selected songs right-clicking takes much longer to show dropdown
menu to the point where the command just freezes the system.
But, selecting many songs with the mouse and then pressing ENTER on keyboard
opens Player and plays them right away.
Tried different mice, re-installed drivers but no change. HELP!!!!

Create unallocated space
Hi,
I've reformatted my system and all is fine.
After installing XP Home, applications and drivers I installed Xpress
Recovery 2 from the gigabyte chipset disk. I then tried to back-up my
system using XR2 which notified me of insufficient HD space.
I've since learnt that I must have appx 4gb of unallocated space to use XR2.
How can I release 4gb from my system HD to unallocated space or should have
this been done when creating my C: partition.

Hi all. I'm running into problems with my CD-RW.

I know it's an old system but it's all I got.
The problem I'm having is with the Samsung. Everytime I try to burn a disc
in the middle of writing it reboots the system. Also in the middle of
xfering files from the Samsung to the hard drive it reboots. I don't think
the CD-RW is faulty because I recently reformatted and put Windows 98 (using
EZ CD Creator 4) and it works flawlessly.
Is there a way (updated driver perhaps?) that I can fix this? I really don't
want to use Win98 as it's very flaky for me.
Would appreciate any help anyone can provide as I've been trying to find a

I have a Dell 620 Latitude laptop. It came with Vista Ultimate. Several
work related programs weren't Vista compatible so I pulled the original hard
drive with the Vista install intact and I replaced it with a new hard drive
on to which I installed WinXP Pro.
Recently I've been trying to get Magic Jack to work with the laptop. If I
plug the Vista hard drive back in MJ works fine. With the WinXP
install...no joy. The MJ adapter won't talk nicely to any of the USB ports.
In doing some research I read a post that mentioned the MJ adapter uses the
same driver as the CD/RW drive. I plugged the Vista hard drive back in and
sure enough, with MJ mounted the driver is the very same as the driver for
the Sony DWQ-58A DVD-CD drive.
In my WinXP installation the driver for the CD drive is dated mid 2001. I'm
trying to find an updated version but have so far struck out. Can anyone
point me in the right direction?

What hardware do I need for this network?
Hi,
First of all, if you think this post belongs in another group then please
let me know, I really need help with this!
We will have 10 XP Home PCs and a network printer at work. Currently, we
just have a 6 port switch where 5 PCs connect to one that acts as the gateway
for the internet and the printer. The broadband is BT Business ADSL.
What I want to do is have a wireless router so our 2 laptops can connect as
well. Am I right to assume that if I buy an ADSL Wireless 4 port Router, I
can connect 3 PCs directly to the router and the other port can be connected
to the 6 port switch?
I am a bit of a novice when it comes to switches and routers. If you can
recommend a plan then that would be fantastic. We want to keep costs down as
well which is why we are sticking with XP Home and not getting a server.

Laptop won't boot.
I have a Tiny N18 laptop that won't boot from the hard drive. The bios
messages appear, drive light flickers then black screen and NO activity. The
bios recognizes the drive OK.
I can boot from CD and I've run chkdsk on the drive and it appears to be OK,
also run fixboot and fixmbr with no difference. I then did repair using XP CD
reinstalling windows with no joy.
Booted using Ultimate Boot CD for Windows and everything works fine. Checked
drive and no viruses. It just refuses to boot. Anyone any ideas ?

We have a server with RAID configured in it and is running a XP
Professional version which is
installed in a separate hard drive. The problem which we face now is that
once in 3-4 days its
giving a single line blue screen error message as
System halted due to hardware failure.
and the entire system gets struck. We check out the event log of the OS ,
but there is no clue
from the Operating System. Is it related to RAM failure or some other
hardware failure. In MS
support doc also they don't have mentioned anything regarding this error
message.
If anyone can put some light over this issue will be greatly appreciated.

card fan failure
On boot, I get this warning, and am prompted to hit F1 or F2.
But...the fan has not failed, nor is it blocked or running slowly.
The graphics card fan is after market and runs great also.
I don't see any control for this in BIOS

Game controller doesn't work anymore
Hi,
My friends and I are always playing games on my computer, and two of us have
game controllers that we plug in via USB. They've worked great and all, but
one day my friend's stopped working. Mine still works and is the same brand,
but only a model higher. Whenever I plug his in, I don't get any do-do sound
or anything. The controller works fine on his computer. I tried my other
USB ports, and it didn't work, except for the third one worked once. It
started to install it, then it said "Your new hardware failed to install".
His controller installed on it's own the first time I plugged it in, and it
didn't come with a hardware disc. I've also tried downloading the drivers
again for it and installing them, and nothing changed. One day it randomly
worked for about 5 minutes. I dunno how that happened. I've checked the
Device Manager, and it doesn't appear on the list. When I go to the Game
Controllers option in the control panel and try to add a joystick it says:
"Your Gameport or Gameport drivers are not properly configured. Please
consult the Device Manager." I'm running Windows XP SP2. The dis functional
joystick is a Game Elements GGE900, mine is a GGE910. We'd greatly
appreciate any help.

Modem Driver
I have given my old PC (which i always ran on external cable modem) to my
sister in law and she is trying to get it working on dialup modem
In the device manager XP recognises the modem but no driver installed - i
pulled it out to see if it had any branding so i can get her the driver on
disc - but it looks like some obscure generic modem

FIX: Local Keyboard/Mouse doesn't work after uninstalling IBM
Scenario:
From Add/Remove Programs, IBM Director is uninstalled. Computer
reboots and *KABOOM* no local mouse or keyboard. If you remote into
the machine via RDP, keyboard mouse work fine. (I would also test the
hardware by booting a CD OS and testing there. I personally use
BartPE..)
Problem:
The issue, seems to be the UpperFilters registry entry for the
keyboard and mouse.
Solution:
For keyboard, fire up RegEdit and navigate to the following reg key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Headless\HeadlessKey
\1&1a590e2c&0&01]
In the right pane, double-click the UpperFilters entry and make sure
the ONLY thing listed in the box in "kbdclass" (mine also had usbkbex5
listed before it - i got rid of it)
The same technique for the Mouse: fire up RegEdit and navigate to the
following reg key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96F-
E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
In the right pane, double-click the UpperFilters entry and make sure
the ONLY thing listed in the box in "mouclass"
If you have no luck, try following these instruction that let me to my
solution: The test below is for kbdclass, but you can can use
mouclass just the same. Please POST YOUR FIX if it is different...
1. Go to your Start menu and click “Run…”
2. In the Run box that opens, type “regedit” and press Enter.
3. In the new window that opens, click the “Edit” menu, then “Find.”
4. In the find filed, type “kbdclass” and press enter.
5. The registry editor will no search for any key that has “kbdclass”
in it. What you are looking for is any that have a name of
“UpperFilters” and a data of ” something_random_here kbdclass” You may
need to go to “Edit,” “Find Next” if the search finds something else
first.
7. Once you find the key, double click on it, and edit the text so
that it includes only “kbdclass”. Press OK.
7. Continue searching (using the “Edit” and “Find Next” menu) until
you have found and edited all of the “UpperFilters” keys. Again, all
should have a data filed that includes only “kbdclass”.
8. Close the registry editor.
9. Go to the device manager, find your keyboard in the list (which
should still be reporting a “Code 39″ error), and uninstall it.
10. You should then restart your computer, and with any luck, your

HID Non-User Input Data Filters that have a Yellow ! on the icon.
I have a new Laser Keyboard and mouse 6000 on which the extended keys do not
work.
I notice I have in the Device Manage two HID Non-User Input Data Filters
that have a Yellow ! on the icon.
What does that mean?
Properties show:
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)
I've tried uninstalling and adding hardware but can't fix this.
Tried updating the driver.
The disk that came with the set is an installation disk that when run
probably installs drivers but doesn't appear to have the drivers available
so that I can update the driver directly from it.
I'm at a lost as to what to try next.
Do you have any suggestions as to what might possibly help?

Fan goes turbo the moment I turn on computer
Dell Dimension 8200. Been a nice quiet computer for 6 years. A few days
ago, when I was out, I'm told fan that cools CPU decided to start
blowing furiously. Then I'm told computer shut itself down.
I didn't find any thermal messages in system log. Computer boots and
runs, but fan blows furiously the moment I push the power button to turn
it on.
Ran Dell Diagnostics. It passed all tests. But there wasn't a test for
the fan.
If it was a thermal problem, something getting hot, wouldn't it take at
least a few seconds for something to get hot to trigger the fan? But
this fan blows furiously the moment I turn on the computer.
Could it be a faulty temperature sensor somewhere? I wonder where the

Sata DVD, Sata HDD and Pata DVD
My Sata DVD drive suddenly stopped responding. The control light is
permanently on but the drive can't be opened (neither on the drive itself nor
via driveletter rightclick - eject). No DVD is in the drive.
Before this problem started I noticed that during boot my Sata HDD is only
listed as '1: ' (not as it used to be when I still had IDE where the drive
was listed by it's number, like ST xxxxxxx), listed as '2: ' was the Pioneer
DVR 112 (Pata) but the Asus DVD RW was not listed at all. It did exist in
Device Manager though and worked OK until an hour ago.
Are there things to consider with this configuration that I may not have
considered (being completely new to the wonderful world of SATA - and PATA
for that matter)?

I am considering investing in an external harddisk 160 Gb with an IDE
interface. My only worry is the power supply. Can my desktop handle the
extra power requirement? How do I find our before I spend the money? I
intend to connect the harddisk to a USB hub which has a seperate power

Firewire (1394)-card: "This device cannot start"
It is very strange that so many people has been complaint about the
same problem and VIA has no solution or they do not want to give a
"solution". I have contact them many, many times and always is a run
around that is going nowhere near to a fix. After sending numerous
emails they have gave up and they do not answer my emails any more.
Now days millions of people are using digital recordings, and I am
suspicious that Microsoft has put out a must install 'security update'
blocking out this type of service. for example, in Windows XP SP2...go
to Add or Remove Programs, click on 'Change or remove Programs' "TAB",
from there on the top right make sure 'show updates' is checked and
also 'sort by name' is selected. Now, scroll down and look for
'Windows XP Software Updates', underneath it within that update you
can find 'Windows Imaging Component', click on that one and you will
see more information about it, This is an un-removable update

Cannot connect Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse or Keyboard with SP3
Hello,
Have recently insatlled Windows XP SP3 and shortly after, my Microsoft
Bluetooth keyboard stopped functioning. I uninstalled the software for both
mouse and keyboard and connot get either device to connect again. I have
installed a non bluetooth wireless mouse (Microsoft Wifeless Laser Mouse
6000) sucessfully. Have also sucessfully installed the Bluetooth mouse and
keyboard onto another PC, so the hardware is good. This Microsoft hardware
package consists of a Wireless Transceiver for Bluetooth 2.0, Intellimouse
Explorer for Bluetooth and the Keyboard Elite for Bluetooth.
Don't know if this is related to SP3 or if it is just a coincidence. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.

Can a USB-only Seagate portable drive be turned off when not needed?
I have a USB Seagate portable drive with 120 GB. Can Windows XP SP2
turn it off when it isn't in use? At least when the computer is

Used space on hard drive
Hi,
Vista Home Premium, 1.8g processor with 1g RAM, Packard Bell machine in
England.
If I go 'Computer' I get the usual list of 'C drive', 'DVD drive' etc. If I
right click the C drive, properties, it tells me that I have 75gig used.
If I then open the C drive folder and get the list of what's in it, Program
Files, Users, Temp etc and highlight all of the contents, right click them
and select 'Properties' again it tells me that I have 17.5gig used which I
think is about right. I know for sure that I don't have 75gig used, but the
machine is telling me that I have.
I've put lots of massive video files (45g plus) onto the machine from DV
camcorders and also from ripped DVD's but all these have been deleted. I
usually edit these files as necessary then transfer them to one of three
external hard drives, then delete them from the machine.
I use Webroot Window Washer to 'wash' the hard drive.
I've done everything that I know, defragging, virus checking (Norton),
spyware checking (AVG), washing empty space with Window Washer but it still
tells me I have 75gig used.
Ay ideas?

Problem with my AMD Phenom 9600 and XP
Hello Everyone!
I recently bought myself a Amd Phenom 9600 processor and after i installed
it i reinstalled windows xp but the thing is that when i reinstalled xp it
was hung up on "34 minutes remaining" for about 30 min (when it installs the
HW before you type in your serialnumber and such).
Ok, it tought this was just something with the installer and the phenom
processor but when i rebooted my computer it took around 30 minutes there too
and it does everytime i try to reboot it.
I have installed the proper drivers for the processor and motherboard but it
dosent work anyway, its still a 30 min boot-time.
Anyone knows if this can be solved?

new hardware found after reboot? video/vga controller
I suddenly am getting a found new hardware each time I reboot...windows
doesn't find it..2 big yellow question marks in device manager next to VGA
and video controller..tried rolling back, uninstalling,...problem is my
screen is acting really weird now..when you try to use the scroll bar to the
right to move down a page, it goes real slow and jumps, it does not move
smoothly...anyideas as to what happened and what i can do to correct?
