Computer will not boot
Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion Notebook dv5157eu yesterday it was working fine today
it will not boot up. It will boot to a options screen with the options Safe
Mode, Safe mode with networking, Command Prompt ect but no matter which
option I try and I've tried all of them it will boot as far as loading
drivers but stops at a file called mup.sys then it will just auto reboot
again to the above mentioned options. I do not have recovery disks but can
access the recovery partition using f11 but am told that if I proceed all
data will be lost. I have tried alt+d to access the command prompt from the
recovery partition and can but it says x:\minint\system32> I tried C: but get
the message The volume does not contain a recognized file system. please make
sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is
not corrupted. Please can anyone advise me on what I can do to try to solve
this problem... thankyou Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331386
Processor Bus?
I saw this Dell PC on Tesco Direct, for the price I thought the specs were
very good.
I sent the page to my friend, who said it is good for the price, but the low
processor bus means that the computer wont be as fast as I think.
Processor Bus: 800 MHZ
My friend said that this is low, is that true?

started with "blue screen" ended up with "missing system32\hal.dll
Hi folks...
I'm praying somone can assist me as I've been waiting to hear back from
Microsoft on this as it started (when I noticed - my daughter's computer)
when trying to run updates from Microsoft.
Her system is older, running XP Pro and there isn't much on it believe it or
not. AVG is the anti-virus and I've also tried running some registry scans.
No avail, but cleaned a few things up. Mostly having to run in Safe Mode and
Safe Mode w/Networking, yet will still eventually end up getting that blue
screen and many times re-looping and getting stuck & F8 doesn't always work
either.
Again, this is my daughterâ??s computer, and I believe this started about a
week or so ago. She finally told me a few days ago and when I started taking
a look at her system, this is all new, not past issues Iâ??ve experienced.
1. The first thing I tried to do was to run a scan on her system to see if
there were virus, etc.
2. Then I tried to run a windows update and thatâ??s when I personally
encountered the first blue screen of manyâ?¦
3. I had already attempted many times to Use the â??Last Known Good
Configurationâ?? to no avail, a few times the system couldnâ??t even get to
running Windows without having returned directly to the blue screen.
4. Then I was able to use the Safe Mode with Networking, tried running
Windows Update that way, didnâ??t work. Multiple attempts each ending in Blue
Screen
5. I noticed that a message finally gave me something about a Driver issue,
so went to Device Manager, and updated/reinstalled drivers a display screen
and a multimedia device (neither of which I am familiar), but then the Device
Mgr was clear.
6. Then attempted to run Windows update and it did actually download the
Visualization Tool & Installed, thought I was actually getting somewhereâ?¦
But then after it asked me to continue on with scanning for updates, I was
back to the blue screen and it proceeded to no longer be able to start
Windows again, just re-routing back to Blue Screen.
7. Last Known Good Configuration again, didnâ??t work.
I do have screen shots of the blue screens it gives, but the error codes are
of no help as the four it gives me, always change.
I've finally turned the damn thing off as it was just re-looping to blue
screen and couldn't load windows, so after 3 days of tyring to figure it out,
I've given up....
Lastly, apparently my daughter turned the computer on, and now all it shows
is a black screen with the "missing system32\hal.dll" file.
Now I've seen this when I got a brand new system running both Mac & OS
systems, when I loaded windows. I figured out a work around for it on the
Mac, but this system only runs Windows, so not sure what to do from here with
it...
She has some things on her system that she's hoping I don't have to do a
fresh install so any suggestions are tremendously appreciated.
Please let me know what further info I can provide to be of assistance.
Thanks so much,
Sunny Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331382

Plextor PX- 712A
I have a Plextor PX-712A about 4 years old it plays video OK but the
sound has been getting choppy it does the same thing on audio files that
I have burned on it. I am wondering if any one has any idea about what
is going on. My guess is it is something to do with the Read head but,
I'm not a hardware guy. I have monkeyed around with Plextools to see if
the settings were screwed up but, that does not seem to be the issue.
Thanks for any help--I will try and find my local hardware guru but, I
think he is out of business--bummer.

Bluetooth Problem
My XP Pro laptop comes with a built-in Broadcom BT device and driver.
To be able to synch my Blackberry, I need to use the Windows driver instead.
i have two problems:
1) I cannot remove the Broadcom - it is not listed under add/remove software
and when I try to do it in device manager, only one of the two Broadcom BT
items listed under BT have a remove option AND when I remove the one that I
can remove, the Scand For Hardware Changes option automatically reinstalls
the Broadcom software.

Beginner's Question: Adding a 2nd Monitor to my XP System
Hello
I just got a new 22" monitor, which my Nvidia Quadro FX3000 is able
to drive without problems (I'm not a gamer - just regular office type
applications user).
Instead of eBaying my old 17" monitor, I thought maybe I can use it to
increase my monitor real estates. The FX3000 video card comes with two
DVI ports, so I hooked up the old screen to the second DVI port on the
FX3000, but everything just slowed down to a crawl, obviously the card
can't handle 2 monitors.
Do you think installing a second PCI video card would solve the
problem? I don't have any experience building systems so advice is
appreciated. Also, would I need to buy any special software for the
two video cards to work together?
Thanks. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331362

Hardware conflict causes XP boot screen to hang
I installed a Zonet ZUC2400 PCI card (USB + Firewire) and now Windows

transfer video flawlessly. But when I restarted, Windows XP hangs
(like before).

I believe that I may already know the answer to my question, but for a long

randomly start making unusual noises, which required me to close the game or

i945PM laptop chipset, Dual Channel Mode, and unmatched pairs
Before we start... Technical Data Sheet for i945-based chipsets -->
http://www.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/309219.htm. Specifically
reference section 1.1.2 System Memory support for i945GM chipsets (the
i945PM supports all i945GM features but without the integrated graphics).
I just wanted to let you guys know that this chipset does indeed support
dual channel even with unmatched pairs. I know most boards will only do
dual channel mode if the voltage, speed, and capacities match however
this one will do it even if the capacities don't match. I will assume
that the other factors should still match. I used the following memory
sticks...
Slot 1:
G.Skill
F2-5300CL5D-4GBSA
DDRII2GB PC2-5300
CL5-5-5-15
Slot 2:
G.Skill
F2-5300PHU2-2GBSA
DDRII1GB PC2-5300
CL5-5-5-15
Slot one is a stick of 2GB from a 2x2GB matched set
Slot two is a stick of 1GB from a 2x1GB matched set
Therefore they are not meant to go together. They are spec for spec
compatible however. They both run at 1.8v.
Memtest86+ 2.01 passed and reported Dual Channel (Asynchronous). CpuZ
is reporting Dual Channel mode.
Information below is from a CpuZ register dump file.

So umm... yea. Sometimes the boards do not need matched pairs to do

require matched pairs for Dual Channel mode to work.

Installing bigger SATA hard drive - how?
My existing hard drive is quite small so I've just got a new Western Digital
500GB SATA II hard drive and want to make it my "main" drive. The BIOS
allows a choice of boot device, first one being CD/DVD drive, second floppy
drive, 3rd boot device is my existing SATA hard drive and then it goes on
to list SATA 2, SATA 3 and SATA 4.
I'd obviously like to be able to select my new drive as the first boot
device and have my existing drive active so that I could transfer stuff like
music, photo's etc., etc by drag and drop between my old and new drives.
This of course means that both drives would have a C: drive with Windows XP
on each of them, but, because I can select SATA 2 (my new drive) as the
first boot device in the BIOS, am I right in thinking that it IS possible -
or would they "interfere" with each other and cause major problems?

So we downloaded the Firmware from the Dell website, and it says in the

reboot, let it find the thing and do it's bit and then when it goes to
reboot remove the floppy/stick and hey presto.
How do we get a bootable floppy or memory stick?

what... I'm back with generic driver and in device manager I've got a

Can an ISP disable modem configuration?
Have a Versatek ver170p modem. It works fine. I bought it from my ISP
last year when I signed up with them for high speed internet service.
According to the instructions that came with the modem (and on
Versatek's website) I should be able to configure the modem by entering
http://192.168.1.1 in a browser, but when I do this in Internet Explorer
I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". In Firefox it
shows "The connection has timed out". When I "ping" it, everything is
okay. Have tried this with my firewall off, same thing. I've never
been able to get into the configuration menu of the modem, when I first
got the modem I tried and couldn't but didn't worry about it because the
modem worked. Yesterday thought I'd try again to get to the
configuration menu but got the same thing that I got last year.
I know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and I don't intend to fool
around with any of the configuration settings, but it bugs me that I
can't get to the configuration settings.
I'm presuming that my ISP configured the modem to whatever configuration
it needed to connect to them, but could they also have configured it so
that trying to configure it through a browser and http://192.168.1.1
wouldn't work, to prevent anyone from changing the settings? Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331148
All In Wonder 9600 series Automatic Update....
Microsoft Update and Windows Update for Windows XP Home SP2 are including a
high priority automatic update for the "All In Wonder 9600 series" ATI
Graphics Cards. The AGP model of the card will not work with this update
and may destroy it! A complete system reinstall will not fix this issue.
The update states a release date of October 2007.
If you have one of these cards you will most likely never be able to watch
TV on you PC anymore as a result of this update. It does something
internally to the ATI board making it think its an "ATI All In Wonder 9600
Radon" which is a different display card.
A $189 card destroyed, thanks to a bug in Microsoft's code.
If there is anyone else with this problem?????? post on this thread!
To disable this update and continue to use Automatic Updates, go to the
update site with IE 6 or 7. Select CUSTOM. Find the update and select the
text, de-select the install checkbox and select the Hide option directly
under the description.
The most stable release for the drivers are available from the
http://ati.amd.com Support Team. You need to contact ATI support by
submitting a support request. They will tell you which version to download
since the most recent update from March 2008 fails, only after the
Microsoft/Windows update.
If the ATI update that the support team gives you still fails, you need to
contact Microsoft's support and speak to a 2nd or 3rd tier technician!
Unfortunately the Microsoft support website will try to refer you to the PC
manufacturers website/support. They won't be able to help you and recovery
CD's that they get you to purchase won't fix the destroyed Card. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331144

the Acer site and the SC company site, and have no where else to go. Please
read this completely and help me if you can. Here is the information from

I have used the included system disc for my wife's travelMate2300, been to
both the Acer site and the conxant site to get updates. I have installed
them.I received an answer from a microsoft Vista tech after he read this and
he linked me to the same acer dowload I have already loaded.
Everytime it is the same thing. When I click on the properties it says
"enabled but not started"
The device manager says everything is fine. I have updated, disabled and
enabled.
I have gone to services and started the Widows Audio service
I have even tried removing fast detect in the boot.ini file as one post
suggested
Where do you start it? I have formated and installed hundreds of computers
as a high school computer tech and this is the first time I have ever had
audio problems. Usually it happens automatically.

3COM 3C556 Hurricane Driver?
I installed Windows 2000 (not recovery disk version) on an IBM Thinkpad
A21m. The Thinkpad has a 3COM 3C556 Hurricane mini PCI ethernet/modem
card. Windows can't find a driver for it. I looked on the 3COM web
site, but I can't find a "3COM 3C556 Hurricane" specific driver. Does
anyone know what driver I should download and use? Thanks. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331124
corrupted USB flash drive
Suddenly I got a problem on a iomega mini usb drive, that worked OK
for long time.
Inserted the new drive is immediately seen and assigned a letter "X".
If I click on it, I get an error message "insert a disk in the "X"
unit".
I tryed almost everything as my first thought was that the partition
data has been for some reason, corrupted.
1) Same result got on different PC
2) Same result got if I insert the flash before or after the boot.
3) Of course I cannot reformat as the unit is recognized but the
volume/disk is not.
4) I downloaded several software claiming to recover, format,
partition etc USB devices but : no result.
5) Partition Magic 8 doesnt see the drive, only fixed disks
6) Read everything I could find on MS Support, On Google , on Groups
etc.
7) No possibility to reach the storage for a low level formatting.
This is my last attempt, if someone of you has another idea !
After I will go to buy a new drive !!
:-((
Thanks

num lock not working correctly on laptop with numpad
I had to reinstall XP after some work was done on my laptop. Now, the
numlock key makes the letters on the right of the keyboard send numbers (like
many laptop keyboards are supposed to do). But my laptop has a separate
number key pad. Before I reinstalled XP, num lock worked correctly and
turned the number keypad while still letting me type letters. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331099

USB Power lost.
Hello, I have a CNC control running XP Embedded. It communicates to the host
computer via USB to serial adapter. The communications work until the machine
runs a large program. After that the software give an error. "unable to open
port" I believe something is killing power to the USB. After rebooting the
system everything works fine. The system started doing this after software &
bios update. I would appreciate any ideas as to what the problem may be. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331094

CD-ROM (D:) drive disappears/reappears
I am running XP Pro and sometimes when I try to burn a CD, the D: Drive icon
is gone or disappears while I am looking at it. When I reboot, its there and
I can burn the CD? Sometimes it burns fine, other time it is gone? This has
happened approx. 20-25 times?
I have tried reinstalling windows for missing drivers, changed CD drives,
and recently made sure all connections from motherboard and power supply to
drive is correct and secure?
Any ideas? Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331082
Samsung CDRW/DVD will not write to disc
I have Windows XP Professional SP2 stand alone home computer with a Samsung
CDRW/DVD SM 308-B. It runs & installs software CD's and DVD's ok.
Problem: On my home computer, I cannot copy data or other files from the HD
to the (high speed) CDRW disc; but I have no problems on my computer at work
that also runs XP Pro. I don't know which CD/DVD is installed at work. At
home, the Wizard says the "disc is not useable" and to try another, but I
just bought a new pack of High Speed CDRW's. The only files I tried were MS
Word processing files and a .wav file.
I haven't tried CD-R's because I am transferring data to give to others that
they may want to modify later.
Home computer does not have any third party CD/DVD RW software. The work
computer has Roxio installed but that didn't activate, I had success with the
Windows XP version.
I checked drivers and everything comes back OK, and updates come back as
current. Tried to uninstall - reinstall drivers but it did not change. I
also checked that IMAPI service was turned on - which is OK. Device was also
set to Record.
Any suggestions, or should I just pitch it and get new hardware?
Thank you for your help. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331076
Why does my USB 2.0 ports not perform at 2.0 speeds?
When I connect a device to any of my USB 2.0 ports on my computer, I get a
message that says "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port". What can I do to fix this problem?
In Device Manager, I do see a Standard Enhanced USB host.
I do not have a PCI USB card in the computer.
The USB ports are provided by my motherboard (ECS GeForce6100SM-M).
It doesn't matter whether I connect the device to the front or the back ports. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331068

Hard Disk Cooler for Temps above 55C?
Hello:
I recently installed HardDisk Tune 2.55 [HD Tune]to monitor my Hard Disk:
IC35L080AVVA07-0. I believe this HD was made by IBM
The status readings for that disk are all OK, except for temperature ranges
from 48C---59C. It's generally at about 51C but does go up gradually at
times to 59.
In Farenheit reading this would be: ~120--138 F
The FAQ for HD Tune reads:
"
The temperature of the hard disk should not exceed 55°C/131°F. By default HD
Tune warns you if the hard disk reaches this temperature. In this case it's
recommended to use a hard disk cooler to extend the life of the hard disk"
What exactly is meant by hard disk cooler, and how is this
applied/installed? Can you give me some links for such products? What would
be the simplest way to address this?
Thanks in advance:
-eli

DVD drive disappeared and can't uninstall
My DVD drive has disappeared several times. The first time I resolved it by
deleting Upper and LowerFilter registry keys (per Microsoft support article
314060 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060).
This time the Upper and LowerFilter registry keys are no longer there. I
still cannot see the drive in Device Manager so I can't uninstall the drive.
The drive lights up and I hear the disk spinning, so it doesn't seem to be a
power issue. The last time I had this problem it resolved itself after
several reboots. This time I'm out of luck. I've spent hours trying to
resolve it and I'm desperate - any help much appreciated. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331020
Power Surge On Hub Port - Please Help
Hi,
Please could someone help?
I have an Acer TravelMate 800 laptop which has 4 USB ports.
I have a Western Digital Passport external hard disk (320GB) and
whenever I try to connect this device I see the following error:
"Power Surge on Hub Port. The USB Mass Storage device has exceeded the
power limits of its hub port."
The device never appears in 'My Computer'.
I am prompted to disconnect the device and then click on 'Reset'.
I can connect a USB mouse in to any one of the ports and it works
fine. I can also connect a Kingston Data Traveller pen drive (512MB)
in to any one of the drives and that also works fine. It is only this
Western Digital Passport external hard disk which causes this error.
Can anyone help? Can it be resolved?
Any ideas most gratefully accepted. Tag: reg: hang of hdd or os Tag: 331016
