power up the Mobo
I removed the cover of the PC casing to observe these:
When I switch on the wall socket power, the motherboard's yellow color LED
come on, the CPU fan spin a while then stop (2 times).
Note that I have not press the power button on the casing.
If I have not even press the power button on the casing, should I see these
activities on the motherboard?
The other problem is when I press the power button on the casing, the system
power up but it dies down. I need to press the button a 2nd time in order to
power up the system.
Could the experts give some insight to these problems? Thank you. Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 333154
Master or Slave
It turns out I only have one IDE connector on this motherboard and a bunch of
sata connectors. Right now I want to get this PC up and running so I'm gonig
to use the old hard drive that I was using on my Dell 8300. This drive is a
Seagate Baracuda 7200.7 80 GB hard drive.
Hell with trying to push it. I'm using 2 optical drives. One as the master
and the other as a slave. The master will be the burner and the slave to play
games.
The hard drive is going to be a sata. I've never used one before. I better
follow the motherboard manual and learn it now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

no internet connection
I reloaded Win XP on a new hard drive after my old one died. I have two
problems now.
1. I am unable to get an internet connection either by wire or WIFI. This
is in a house with both wire and WIFI in which other computers work fine.
When I check the drivers I find that there is a yellow question mark on all
my "other " hardware including VGA driver, ethernet, PCI sound and
multimedia. I am unable to find drivers on the installation WinXP ser2

2. My video resolution was incredibly low and when I go to display settings
I am unable to move the slider bar to a higher setting.

CPU chip stuck to the Heat Sink
I just took off my heat sink and the CPU chip is stuck to the heatsink and
it came off without pulling up the level that holds the CPU chip in place.
You know when you place a CPU chip into the socket you have to lift the
socket arm up 90 degrees and then place the chip in and snap the lever down.
Well this came out and the lever, of course was still in the locked position.
Is this a problem too? How do I separate the CPU chip from the heatsink? Take
a razor blade and pry it off?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recreate Missing MBR & MFT
A software that I was looking at somehow managed to replace or erase or
corrupt the MBR and the MFT on a Seagate 500 GB drive. This drive was
formatted as NTFS. My operating system is on another drive. My Windows XP
sees the drive but is calling it Healthy(Active) and unformatted with no
file system. However, a data recovery program sees what looks like all the
original NTFS files still in existence on the drive. I used this recovery
software to successfully copy a 17 GB file to another drive. This software
can only recover files by copying them to a different drive.
I don't have enough free space to copy approximately 400 GB from the 500 GB
drive. Is there a way to recreate the MBR and the MFT based on the existing
files on the drive so that I can use the files where they are rather than
having to add another drive to copy to?

NTFS Checking for Consistency
It doesn't happen every time I turn my computer on, but I get a blue screen

something like there is an NTFS error and the computer needs to check the

NIC stays active even when unplugged
I have a Dell 300m laptop with a built in GB nic. Users have been
complaining that when they are on the road starting up can take quite a
while. They sit a varios stages of the boot an login.
I have used some utils like BOOTVIS that analzes the boot process and see
that there are long delays where XP is waiting for some reponse from the
network - either checking for domain or whatever.
One thing I noticed is that the NIC still appears active even when nothing
is plugged in. It has the 169.x.x.x IP address bound to it as if it were
connecting to a DHCP-less network. I believe this is what may be causing
the long delays because the services that rely on finding some server or
controller on the network see an active connection then need to wait for a
time out.
I cannot seem to find a way to turn off the NIC when nothing is plugged in.
Is there a way?
I also suspect that this is also causing a problem for when I try to put the
computer into Hibernate mode. I usually get a BSOD complaining about a
hardware failure (Stop 0x0000000a). Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 333065
Re: reformatting external USB drive
Addendum:
On further thought, why even bother with XXCOPY, when you can get various
windows-based programs to do it. It's a LOT more convenient that way, and
you'll never have to worry about the possibility (or at least potential) of
breaking the long filenames (as is often the case with the older DOS based
programs; but XXCOPY may not have that limitation - I can't recall now)

How do I check if power supply for my PC is working? Heeeeeeeeelp!!!
Hello, I am trying to build a new PC. After connecting all the parts,
I turned the switch on and... nothing.
I suspect that the power supply is not working, or the circuit on the
motherboard that switches the power supply on is not working.
When I flip the switch on the back of the power supply on, the
keyboard LED turns on for a second. However, when I press the major
switch, nothing happens. No fans move, and there are no noises. I
checked the major switch with an ohmmeter, and the switch seems like
it works.
I'm not sure if the power supply or the motherboard circuit that
starts the power supply isn't working.
So my question is, how can I check if the power supply is working?
Thank you very much

Restore XP to a previous date
Hi,
Ive XP Pro SP2 on my computer. On Monday morning (16th June 08) I accidently
deleted some update folders in the C:/Windows/ directory. So when I try to do
some internet updates, it cannot because these folders were deleted.
Realizing my mistake, I used the XP installation CD to repair windows that
same day but those folders are still missing.
Then I realised that the easiest way I could have done was to restore using
windows restore utility to a restore point before the mentioned date which I
did the deletion of the folders.
My problem now is I try to restore to an earlier restore point but earlier
dates are greyed out. Only Tuesday (17th June 08) & later dates till now are
enabled & that i guess was because of the repair I did.
Is there a way to re-enabled the restore point dates before I did the repair
so I can restore from one of those dates in which the deleted folders were
still there???
Pls advice if there is a way.
Thanks

XP Forgets CD/DVD drive
I have had this problem for a while now. I have tried a bunch of fixes, like
the upper and lower filters registry fix. The uninstal and reinstal (both
phisical and software wise). Uninstall and reinstally (from device manager)
my IDE controllers, all to no avail. Every time I reboot my computer, the
cd/dvd drive goes missing. If I go to device manager and search for hardware
changes twice, it auto detects and installs. But on reboot, it will
dissapear again.
This started happening after I installed a free version of farstone's game
drive, that came with my NVIDIA video card. I uninstalled the game drive
after it started freezing my computer on startup. I found out it was the
culprit because I started doing selective startup. I uninstalled it, and
after that my current problems started. I contacted game drive, but since
its a free copy, they wont support it, and have given no answer, except to
say that they wont help me, because it was a free copy. So I am basically
stumped. I have concluded that it has to be some kind of registry problem,
but have no clue as to what it might be. I have searced for and looked for
all instances of farstone related entries in the registry and have eliminated
them. But still no sucess. I am practically stumped about how to proceed,
so any new information would be appreciated. Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 333022
[OT] Unidentified USB device on all USB Ports after reboot,...
Hi,
this question is rather OT here but its hardware stuff, so
maybe someone can help me out in solving this because
i have a serious problem on my Windows XP System:
After rebooting the system, all my USB devices are
rejected from the System after plugging them into a
USB slot with the Popup "Unidentified USB device".
I removed any USB device entry, even roothub and
all usb stuff from the Device Managers Treenodes,
rebootet, reinstalled all hardware drivers (installed
automatically from system itelsf), rebooted again,
plugged my WLAN stick on and got the same
message after saying that it was successflly installed
and is ready to use. Message was again"Unidentified USB device",
after telling me, that the deivice is ready,...nocthing is/was ready!
Any ideas how to fiy this,...?
I really changed nothing on the System!

best protocol for carging a Laptop Battery
I just bought a new LiIon Laptop battery for my Dell Inspirion E1505 (dual
boot WinXP and Fedora).
I gave it my initial 10 hour charge. Now what? I started using it but
should I continue using it till the battery is drained and then recharge?
Or should I only drain it partially? If it is not drained fully how will
the Laptop learn (callibrate) itself to what the new capacity is?
Or is it recommended that I only partially discharge it? What's best for
the battery life?
Another point: How many times should I cycle it this way? In the long term
should I always wait for a full discharge; or can I charge it up from a
partially-discharged state or does it not matter?
I've gogled this but recieve conflicting advice.

Camera connected to PC but can't copy pics
I've got 3 cameras. All 3 plug into the usb and create a drive and
then via explorer I can just drag and drop files from the camera chip to
my PC. Just like any usb device.
A friend got a new camera, a Canon Powershot A590, and we plugged it in
just like the others. And rather than a generic USB drive, I get a
specific Canon Powershot drive. It opens just like a drive, and has
photos. I can change to thumbnail and see the pics. I can click on
them and view them in fax viewer too. I can delete them. I can even
right click and drag them to my desktop. Except when I release the
mouse and it says copy or move, and I pick, it don't do a thing. End
of job. Nothing moves or copies.
I have XP SP2 on this PC. He's left with the camera but I still thought
I'd ask to see if we can figure this out one day. It holds 1700+ pics
on the 4gig chip so we can wait for a while.
The manual says I have to load their software to copy the pictures. I
just can't understand that. Like I've said, I've done this with other
cameras, and know others that have done the same drag and drop without
and special tools. Really befuddles me.

These are the things I have rules out:
Hard drive has 44 Gb left on it
Internet Security shows no sign of viruses
I have run a registry cleaner
I also ran CCleaner.

Installing Driver? Hardware?
I've had a Sony DVD-RW (external) for about three weeks now and it worked
like it should up until this past weekend. I wrote to Sony and we were able
to trace the problem down to the Windows Driver. They had me click on the
Hardware Manager to see if the device was connected and I got the yellow
question mark with a Code 1. It prompted me to install the new hardware and
when I click on it, it brings up the model # of my Sony product and just
keeps searching and searching but nothing happens. Before I go any further,
let me tell you that although I'm a whiz at using a computer (and most times
even fixing it), my knowledge of technical terms is very limited so be easy
on me if you can help. Prior to this, I tried everything I knew how to do
before I realized that if the DVD burner isn't connected anyway, nothing is
going to work.
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how I go about doing this? If it
is even possible? I don't have a clue as to how I would install a driver. I
read through the support pages and even clicked on some of the options under
Properties but it's like reading another language. Thanks in advance for any

OT: Memory expert please :-)
I just bought 2x512 ddr400/pc2300 Corsair XMS 3200LL modules, and after

I am no further forward in determing the "best" settings in bios, and
indeed, my bios has slightly ambiguous labels which are hard to match up
with,
tRCD, tRP and tRAS etc.
http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/64
i.e Which one is which ?
If I set bios to use SPD, Lavalys Everest "motherboard" ICH5 reports :-
Memory Timings:
CAS Latency (CL) 2T
RAS To CAS Delay (tRCD) 2T
RAS Precharge (tRP) 2T
RAS Active Time (tRAS) 5T
???
I've just set manually in bios:- (Below is how the bios memory setting
options appear on screen btw),
DRAM CAS# Latency 2.5
DRAM RAS# Precharge 3
DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay 3
DRAM Precharge Delay 5
DRAM Burst Length 4
...and CPUZ reflects these settings accurately, ...(dunno what Lavalys
Everest is doing ?!)
anyhooo...
...completely confused, after reading lots about setting CAS to 2 can not be
as "good" as setting it to 2.5 ???
...any advice much appreciated,

re-enabling RAID1 on existing XP install =?ISO-8859-1?Q?=28Intel?=
Hi group,
Firsttimer in here: if this group is inapropriate for my question,

I have 2 SATA HDs in my machine that were working as RAID1 earlier.
I remember installing them as RAID1 Array during XP installation by
pressing F6 (Load Thrid Part SCSI/RAID drivers).
During normal boot-up I always got: Intel® Matrix Storage screen (which
I could enter by pressing ctrl-i to configure it).
My RAID1 functioned normal.
How I screwed up:
My machine never booted the first time, it always needed a second try to
get past POST message and into windows boot.
So I fiddled around in the BIOS, and decided, in my endless wisdom, to
change my SATA from IDE to RAID. --> WRONG!
No more booting at all. :-(
No problem, I thought, let's put it back to IDE.
Now my machine boots again, but my drivers for RAID (Intel® Matrix
Storage) are totally gone.
I have now, of course, an extra HD, since my RAID1 is gone, which is
indeed a mirror of the C-drive I boot from now. (Better maybe: it WAS a
mirror, since I have no more mirroring going on now. )
The Intel® Matrix Storage Manager (a windows application) fails to start
and says it misses the required plug-ins.
How do I reenable RAID1 on my XP?
I DO have a floppy with the right drivers, the ones I used with the
first time install.
Any advise?
I don't feel like reinstalling my whole XP and all the apps on it.
I read through the manual of intell, but they adress only loading the
RAID drivers during XP setup.
Thanks.

messed up audio drivers
In trying to install the audio drivers for my motherboard I've gotten XP
totally confused. When I first installed the driver CD that came w/ my
motherboard it showed as Realtek AC97 but there was no sound. I then tried
having XP search the net for a better driver and it now shows as Via. Is
there a way I can remove all of the cached driver info and start having XP
detect the hardware from scratch? Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 332890
ZP, Vista and KVM
Is anyone using a KVM switch between an XP PC and a Vista PC that actually
works and doesn't cost a huge amount?
My monitor and both PCs have VGA and DVI connections. The keyboard and
mouse are the common Microsoft Wireless Comfort keyboard 1.0A and Wireless
Optical Mouse 2.0 which connect via a USB plug on a Microsoft Optical
Desktop receiver. The receiver also has a blue PS2 plug which does NOT have
to be connected to either of the PCs for the KB and M to work perfectly.
Is a KVM switch likely to cause problems if I set up a network of any sort?

Switching the Interrupt use in LPT Port
Hi all
i work in a company that uses 2 main applications - based on win xp pro.
the application uses the LPT port in order to communicate between an
external pedal and the 2 applications mentioned, but there is a difference in
the way they do so.
one application uses the lpt option "Never Use An Interrupt"
while the other uses it under the option to "Use Any Interrupt assigned to
the port"
(to see what i'm talking about go to :
Device Manager => Ports (COM & LPT) =>ECP Printer Port 'properties' => "Port
Settings" Tab. )
now, we want both application to be able to work - based on user logon.
meaning, a user logon - or even an earlier choice menu such as "Hardware
Profile" menu should "Switch" those option to its wanted form.
we tried to implement a registry change upon user logon but there is no
change. further more - if we try to implement the registry change After user
is logged on (manually) - the system announces that it cannot add those
values to registry because the system probably uses those ports.
we also tried to create 2 different hardware profile, but it does not change
the way the lpt will handle interrupts, it can only determine weather the
device is enabled or disabled.
any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Invereted comma key doesn't work properly, keyboard works fine on other computers
Hi,
Any assistance with this strange glitch would be greatly appreciated. No
matter what keyboard I attach my Windows XP (Home) computer I have to press
another key after pressing the inverted comma key to get the inverted comma
to show up on the screen. The key works fine while in the BIOS screen or
using a start up disk to get to MSDOS, but not in WinXP and nothing changes
no matter what I do with keyboard device drivers (mind you, mostly my
keyboards don't need any special drivers loaded). I can't get rid of this
strange annoying glitch.
What I suspect is that some basic keyboard driver is corrupt in my install.
I have installed windows several times and the issue remains. This leads me
to think that the corrupt file (if this is the problem) must be on the
original CD. But I have no idea where to get an "uncorrupted" copy of this
file and how to update it. Any suggestions regarding this glitch?
Thanks

Write protected DVD-RAM
I have aquired a new laptop recently and have come up against a weird
problem.
The laptop (HP DV6000) is equipped with an optical drive that is supposed to
read and write DVD-RAM discs. I have a few of these so I decided to use
one to store my digital photos on. However when I try, I get an error
message that the disc is write protected. If I try to reformat the disc, I
get a similar message telling me the disc is write protected.
What gives? How do I remove the write protection from the disc? Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 332859
changing the fan cooler on my video card
I want to change the fan on my model ATI FireGL X2 AGP Pro graphics card,
and I want know if it's possible to take off the existing fan cooler and
sticking another cooler fan on it? I thinking about buying the Zalman
VF900-Cu VGA Cooler, or the VF700-Cu VGA Cooler made by Zalman.
If anyone knows what that ATI FireGL X2 is like, it seems a bit hard or
impossible to take off the cooler? I'm not sure, I never looked at it in that
way to study to take off the cooler.
I'm about to soon.
I asked this question in a hardware group especially for this question and
didn't get a response. I get better replies here, by much more.

How can I go to the help files???
If I want to read the help documentation on my own, where is it?

wireless multimedia keyboard 1.1 software won't install
Just bought this wireless optical desktop 1000. Intellipoint software
installs just fine. The software for the keyboard starts to install, gets
about 1/5 of way and stops with an error message "Setup cannot continue
because either there is insufficient hard disk space or an unexpected error
has occurred. Please free the necessary disk space, and run Setup again. For
system requirements refer to product packaging" OK so there's 3GB left on a
70GB disk. I downloaded the latest software from the Microsoft site and
tried that with same result. Replaced the hardware - same result. Is this
about space or something else.

Driver Update Fails "Access Denied"
Hello
I have a Toshiba Satellite M70 FE5 notebook running Windows XP Hom
Edition SP3. My part number is PSM71C-FE500E
I had wanted to update my display adapter video driver, which is an AT
Mobility Radeon X700, I've downloaded the driver from Toshib
themselves
The update fails over and over, I did try everything such as safe-mode
removing the old driver, cleaning the registry, downloading the drive
from a few other places, all leading to the exact same problem, "Acces
Denied"
I've tried installing the driver two ways, running it's setup file an
by going to the device manage and choosing to update the driver
I am gathering this is a registry issue and the file it needs to delet
in order to update the driver is not allowing itself to be deleted, th
computer thinks it's in use
I am logged in with the Adminstrator account
This is my setupapi.log, if someone can review it and try to help me
I've been at this 3 days. Originally installing the driver update caus
it to remove the original files, I don't have them and can no longe
restore my system either

Drive Upgrade with Acronis BIOS Error
Using Win XP Pro on an IBM Thinkcentre w/40 gb drive.
I backed up the 40gb to a USB drive using Acronis 10 and made a boot CD.
I replaced the 40 gb with a new 320 gb and booted to acronis on the CD.
Restored the C: partition, rebooted and received a BIOS error about the hard
drive change, saved config and rebooted with no errors.
Everything seems to be working OK but about every 2nd or third time I
reboot, I get the same hard disk error from the bios (1776 I think).
Continue to boot works ok and still no sign of a problem once I get into
execution.
Any suggestions as to why the error pops up erratically? and is there a
utility that would verify the upgrade is successful other than running a few
programs? I ran the Office 'Detect and Repair' that validates all the
office components successfully with no detected problems.
I would just like some confidence that when I button this system all back up
it is as good as new.

Memory Pairs
I just read a post on a web site by a credible computer guy who says
that even though RAM in a Pentium 4 does not have to be installed in
pairs, like EDO did, it is still better to install identical pairs. That
is, it's better to have 2 1GB memory modules (PC3200 in this case) than
1 2GB module. Is he correct?
The reason I ask is that a lot of my computers only have two DIMM slots,
such as my wife's notebook computer. It came with one 256MB module. When
I upgraded it, I added one 2GB SO-DIMM and left the original module in
place. Should I have gotten two 1GB modules instead? Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 332829
Mobo sets bios-password by itself

Reboot Needed After USB device plugged in
I am using Win XP SP3 on a Pentium M based laptop.
I have just noticed that all of a sudden plugging in a new USB device
requires the computer to reboot before I can use the device.
For example, I just bought a new USB flash drive. When I plugged it in for
the first time, the driver is found, it is installed and then I get a
requester informing that the driver's installed by may not function
properly until the computer is rebooted. And indeed: until the reboot, the
drive is not visible to windows.
Once the reboot is done, the device starts working properly when plugged
in.
This has happened with three such new devices (presentation controller etc.
another flash drive). It would never happen before: in the past I was able
to start using a new flash drive immediately.
The only difference is that I have installed SP3 in the last few weeks. Is
anyone else seeing the same behaviour, and is there a way of fixing it?
Thanks. Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 332813
Unlocking Keyboard
When I start up my Windows XP computer, my keyboard will not work. If, after
the computer boots, I hold down the right shift key, I will - after about 30
seconds - hear a sound. After that sound, the keyboard will then function
until the next time I shut down the computer. Tag: flash drive freezes computer in middle of file transfer Tag: 332801
Windows XP Gateway PC
My Gateway PC about 3 yrs old continuously has the fan running whenever I
wake it up. The minute i move the mouse and get the pc up and running the fan
runs and will not shut down unless i put it to sleep or reboot.
Anyone out there have any ideas what may be wrong and how to fix it, without
dragging it to a service dept.????
Thanks ahead of time

Can't access external hard disk
hi
I had external HD connected USB to XP machine
While copying files it lost connection
Now when I connect to any computer, not only that one, I see the
device added on device manager as USB mass storage
I see it is added to the list of devices I can safely remove, but it
say location 0 and no letter is assigned to it
On the manage section of my omputer I do not see the device
As I said same behaviour on several computers so the issue is the HD
Any clue someone?
