Well, if you use a tool, it could slip and scrape a component right off
the motherboard. And surface mount components can be hard to find once
removed. (I know, because I've been on the lab floor on my hands and
knees looking for them :-) )
I would try a finger first, as you're less likely to damage something
in the process. Take your time...
