ATI 256mb cards prevent hibernation in XP

I have a DELL Vostro and an ATI 256Mb card (WIN XP PRO SP2). I can put the
PC into hibernate but when it comes out of hibernation it freezes up with a
BLUE screen saying there is a problem with the ATI2DVAG driver. I have
searched the NET for updates but this is the current driver.

I have noticed in a number of other computers with these 256Mb cards and
they always play havoc with hibernation. I don;t think you can hibernate a
PC with these cards in place. Worse still even if you remove the card the
problem persists as remnants of the driver are hard to remove.

is there a fix for this?

I have emailed DELL but I can guaratee they won't have a fix for this.

i am sure others have this problem but it appears that if you want
hibernation then you need to get rid of these cards..

My only suggestion would be to try a older version of the driver or to try a
beta version of the driver. If you wish to remove the card goggle for Driver
Cleaner Pro. There is a free download of it at Guru3D which will remove all
the driver information from your system.

Please note that Drive Cleaner Pro is now a "paid" program for get the
"updates" definitions. Guru3D seems have located a replacement
utility.

Are suggesting that I also remove the CARD? Or just remove the DRIVER and
let some generic driver take over? I am hoping there is a VGA graphics
system on board.

Thier is no ATI issue with 256mb cards.However,a hibernation fix for xp does
exist,its kb909095 Also,kb914028 Also,even though ati likes the "catalyst"
xp does not.You can & should install the control-panel v8.18.0.0 then
install
drivers only from thier list.As ati tech put it "the catalyst &
control-panel" are
one in the same.....

Where did you get the latest driver from. You should have obtained from the
ATI website. If you have Automatic Updates enabled then it's quite possible
that you have installed a Microsoft supplied driver, in which case, I'm not
surprised that you have problems.

I would not remove the driver of your graphics card just so you can
hibernate. That is a massive compromise, as your card will not perform
anywhere near its maximum capability without a proper driver. And, just so
you know, Windows will run any VGA card with its generic driver, so yes you
can remove the driver if you REALLY want to. However, have you tried going
into the device's properties from Control Panel > System > Device manager
and selecting the option 'Allow the computer to switch off this device to
save power'? It may not work, but you never know. Good luck, mate.
