Something like this happens around here every 18 months or so on average. (I
just replaced a DVD burner that was creating DVDs that couldn't be read
reliably on other units.)
These gadgets have rather close "best-before dates". If yours is still in
warranty you might try having it replaced. I've found that it's not worth
the effort. I've also found that because of their relatively short usable
lifetimes, it doesn't really pay to shell out extra money for "premium"
units, which just about as long (on average) as the "economy" ones under
heavy use.
