Thank you for that. I got none of the errors or problems listed in that
article. SP3 installed fine but it was only at reboot that the system
would not start and neither would safe mode.
But that is now immaterial. I have no further desire to upgrade to SP3
for the time being. I reinstalled my XP with SP1 and then put SP2 over
the top of it. This was how it was before I installed SP3 and since I
wasn't running Ghost (a mistake I intend to rectify) I couldn't restore
the previous "good" system.
Now I have an SP2 system that behaves in a way it never used to.
Several services don't start at boot-up. DHCP, Print Spooler and AVG
Email scanner all need to be started manually even when they are set to
automatic. After that I have a working system the way it used to work.
It would be nice if there was a hotfix to get these services to turn on
automatically.
I have been checking out the SP2 literature. That offers more hope of a
solution than documents concerning SP3.
