I want to recover files from a full external HD that are not available to
Windows XP any more. The only software I have tried (Recover my files) will
take 5 days, and the PC won't stay running that long. I would appreciate
any suggestions.

Anything on a hd can be accessed & files moved by xp,even if xp could'nt read
the data...Either way, download windows server 2003 or 2008,open the hd thru
my computer, move a few files around in groups (100GB,or so),R.click the
folders
send to compress, once thru, move to pc then to cdrw or dvdrw....

I can't remember any more exactly what happened it was some time ago. I was
using some software to recover the files when I ended up renaming the hard
drive and windows didn't show the files any more.

I would first want to copy the disk, sector by sector, to another disk.
At least, before using *any* software that makes changes to the source disk.

Then, you could have a look around with this. You don't have to change
anything, until you feel confident you understand what happened.

This looks a massive programme. What does it actually do and how do I use
it?

Trevor:
Are you working with a desktop PC?

Is there any chance you can remove the HDD from its USB(?) external
enclosure and install it as a secondary HDD in your system to see if you can
access its data that way? (I'm assuming that your system boots & functions
just fine notwithstanding the external HDD problem, right?)

Here's a sampling of some of the available data recovery programs. (No doubt
there are scores more available on the net). Many, if not most, of these
programs have "demo" versions available. If a demo version is available, in
virtually every case it will merely indicate if the data is recoverable
through the program; it will not actually recover the data. And that's not
an *absolute* guarantee that the data will, in effect, be recoverable when
using the program.

Finally, (depending upon how valuable the data on the disk is to you) your
only recourse would be to use a data recovery service. This, of course, can
be quite expensive - four-figure costs are not unusual.
