Question about hard drives whose file table is corrupted

I have a hard drive that shows files there, but when I try to copy them to
another location I get the message, file not found. Can fixing the file
table fix this problem, or is the drive fried? There was a spike to my
computer before this problem started happening.

Have you done a check disk on that HD? or performed any kind of scans?
check with the manufactors web site they usually offer some utilities for
testing the drive.

No, I have not done any tests on it as it is the primary drive for an HP PC
and the CPU was fried due to a spike. I am in the process of purchasing an
enclosure that will allow me to attach the drive via USB 2.0 cable to my
primary system. I am hoping I can correct the mistakes using Hiran's Boot
CD, or some other program. I am a bit skittish about taking the chance to
connect it directly to my systems motherboard via IDE cable.

as long as it's not set as master and you don't try to boot to it, you should
be able to attach an IDE cable to it just fine, and attempt to read data.

I have since then attached the drive to an external USB enclosure and
retrieved all the pertinent data.
