    - dell e520 usb mouse doesn't work Hi, I have a Dell E520 with a usb mouse and keyboard. It all worked fine. Now Keyboard works, mouse doesn't. Tried to boot into safe mode still no mouse, but keyboard works. Switched mouse and still doesn't work. Switched usb ports, mouse still doesn't work, but keyboard works. Dell doesn't know what to do and says to return it. Before I do that I wanted to ask the "real" experts. You guys are great and have helped me tons in the past. Thanks for all the help and let me know what you think. In summary I tried a different mouse, different usb ports. Keyboard works fine on all ports.     - NEC 870 Won't Change Protocol IP Address I have a NEC870 printer that was working as a network printer using a Hawking print server and a Linksys wireless router. The router failed and was replaced by an Airport Extreme router. While working with the Linksys, the NEC870 had an IP Address of 192.168.1.102 on my lan. The airport extreme uses a 10.0.x.x numbering system for the IP addresses on my lan. Since the NEC870 has a NIC, I wanted to connect the NEC 870 to the Airport Extreme using one of the Extreme's ethernet ports. The problem is I can't access the NEC870's network administration,which is usually done by using a web browser and the IP address of the printer. The printer won't reset to factory defaults. I have followed the directions in the NEC network user's guide to reset the printer, i.e., turn off the printer, hold down the operator panel button and then turn the power back on. The printer still prints out a network settings page with the IP address from my linksys lan (192.168.1.102). The second method, using network administration is not available because there is no longer a 192.168.x.x lan. I tried turning off the power, disconnecting the NIC, powering up the printer, then turning off the power, reconnecting the NIC and powering up again, but the network settings page still reports the same 192.168.1.102 IP address. Is there some other way to force the printer to return to default settings? If not, the printer is useless as it can not be connected to a pc. It's not the best printer ever, but it still has a useful life and I don't like to discard hardware until it is totally useless.     - Another Computer Shutting Down Randomly I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with this fault on my PC. For anyone who has difficulty getting to sleep at night or who has an afternoon to spare, I've listed all the symptoms and my actions and findings below. In addition to that, I've also tried the very helpful suggestions made by Michael W Ryder, Anna and Paul in response to daviddschool's message "Computer shutting down randomly" on 30/5/08, including running Prime 95, but have found nothing obvious. THE KIT Motherboard MSI MS6743 Processor - Intel Pentium 4 (Prescott) 3.4 GHz with hyper threading enabled. RAM - 4 X 1GB DDR-SDRAM Graphics - Nvidia GeForce 6200 Sound - Soundblaster Live! 24 bit HDD - Samsung 500GB SATA 2 (Replaced a 300GB SATA Maxtor and 200GB IDE Seagate drives which were in use when fault first appeared) OS - Windows Media Centre Age - 3 Years Overclocking - No part of the PC has ever been overclocked THE FAULT PC just falls over at random - can be after a few minutes or hours or can be whilst starting up. CONDITION AFTER FALLING OVER Screen goes blank (Monitor generated message "Entering Sleep Mode" message appears on screen, followed later by "No Video Input") There is NO thud in loudspeakers when system falls over All fans continue to run and all LEDs on MB and LAN remain lit or flashing All voltages (measured with digital voltmeter) are spot on and the same as before falling over Reset button not effective. No amount of key presses or mouse abusing brings the PC back to life. Only way to restart is to press power button for several seconds to turn device off On re-powering up, PC might startup but often falls over between the black Windows screen and the blue Welcome screen which follows it. THINGS I'VE NOTICED If I start in Safe Mode it doesn't fall over. If I run a game (a large game like Silent Hunter - not Solitaire or Freecell, etc) it doesn't fall over, even after several days. This is also the case if I run the game in a window instead of full screen. THINGS I'VE TRIED (System tested after every action and fault still there) Removed SP3 Tried to use System Restore but failed every time, no matter what date I tried to restore to. Have used System Restore a few weeks ago and it worked OK then. Changed PSU Removed top 2GB of RAM Replaced bottom 2GB of RAM with previous top 2GB Replaced CPU fan and sink Disconnected FDD & DVD drives Disconnected each HDD in turn Disabled all startups and services in MSCONFIG Removed sound card Removed graphics card *By this time, the Microsoft piracy protection kicked in and told me that I had 3 days to reactivate Windows. I assumed that when I put everything back this demand would be lifted, but it wasn't. Bought a new SATA HDD and installed a new, clean OS Ensured all unneeded onboard devices disabled. Even swapped the monitor. I'm lost now and don't have a clue what else to do. I suppose it must be a hardware fault as I've completely changed the software, but I don't understand the fact that it doesn't fall over whilst in safe mode or while a game is active. The game doesn't have to be in full flow, just having it sat there ticking over is enough to keep the PC happy. The only H/W I haven't changed are the CPU and the MB. As these are £90-ish each, I want to have a good idea which one is faulty before I break open the piggy bank. It's getting harder to get it started at all now. Can anyone PLEEEEEEEASE help.     - "Other Devices" While checking the integrity of my System Devices I noticed that two items were reported as problem devices. Both are under the category of "Other Devices". These are (1) Other PCI Bridge Devices and (2) SM Bus Controller. In both cases the properties button shows that drivers are not installed. When I try to update drivers and allow an automatic internet search I come up with the result that the drivers cannot be installed automatically. My questions are (1) What are these devices? (2) Are they necessary for the proper functioning of my PC? I have not so far noticed any problems. However, I presume that these devices must serve some purpose otherwise Windows will not report them as Problem Devices under Hardware Components in System Information. (3) Where can I get the drivers for these specific devices? My PC is an X86 based PC and I am running Windows XP-Pro with SP3.     - No hard drive? I have windows xp, with two sata2 hard drives installed, one contains recovery and operating sytem and the other for backup/data storage. until recently both these worked fine. however now when i boot my pc it sees the backup hdd in BIOS, but when it boots it takes about 10minutes to clear the windows logo screen and the drive is not seen by explorer or any other program . ran SMARTcheck from BIOS but was ok. i tried safe mode and the drives showed up and worked fine, tried restore but it was blank. i think i made a booboo by downloading some awful program tweakxp i think it was. however this also roughly coincided with an upgrade from avg 7.5-to avg8. please help me get them back surely it's something simple.     - DVD drive installation I've decided to replace my nonwritable DVD drive with a writable one in my 5-year-old Dell Dimension 8250 desktop computer (running Windows XP Home and SP3). Is this something a complete novice can tackle, or should it be done in a shop? My local shop says it would cost $49 for the drive and $75 to install it--and it would come with software for burning discs. (I didn't know burning discs required extra software. I have a Intel Socket 775. I want to know if I need to remove the motherboard to put the backplate on. Anotherwords, do I need to install anything on the underside of the motherboard? Also I want to know which bolts I put the pressure on when I'm screwing them in.     - HP NX9000 - Synaptics touchpad, mouse and keyboard problems I have a problem with my HP nx9000, mouse and keyboard are not working correct. Mouse pointer stops (get stuck) for 0,5-1 sec on the screen during normal movements, then go on. It comes every 5-6 seconds continuously. Also keyboard - some "blank" typing, it miss some symbols, with no reaction. It seems like some operation is always on, hard drive i/o operation indications every 5-6 secs.     - external drive queries I'm using Windows XP, SP3 on my 5-year-old Dell desktop computer, which has a 60GB internal hard drive and USB2. I want to be able to clone my internal hard drive to an external USB drive (or more than one, for security). I've been getting great information and advice here about these drives. After reading through everything, I have a few more questions: 1. If I clone my internal hard drive to an external USB drive and the internal drive crashes, how difficult would it be to install the external drive in my computer in place of the dead drive? I've been told here that all you need to do is take the external drive out of its USB enclosure and put it into the computer in place of the drive that's there. Would I need adapters or anything else that I might not have on hand? As far as I know, my computer can handle a large (>137GB) internal drive--although I'll make sure before I buy one. 2. I believe external drives are generally FAT32 format whereas internal drives are NTFS (mine is NTFS for sure). a. Would that be an issue in connecting the external drive internally? b. Would it be wise to reformat the external drive? c. Would cloning the internal drive onto the external drive reformat the external drive? 3. Originally I planned to get a very large external drive. However, given that my internal drive is only 60GB and I haven't used even half of it, would it make more sense to get, say, a 160GB external drive if it would be used only as a clone for the internal drive? (Someone suggested that I simply get a large internal drive, clone the smaller drive to it, and switch the larger one to become the main drive. I may decide to do that as well, but I like the idea of being able to store the external drive away from the computer.) 4. I've gotten conflicting opinions on whether to get a desktop external drive or a portable: a. Is either type more reliable generally? b. Are there particular drives whose housing allows better airflow than others--or that even have a fan? I've been told I could just put together my own drive, using a good enclosure, but I'm not sure I'm up to that. Sorry to keep coming up with more questions!     - nvidia / momentary black screen / refresh ! ...just unnecessarily fought for an hour or more to fix a momentary "black screen" or "refresh" if you prefer, every time something is mouse clicked in nvidia control panel, .....after uninstalling and installing newer nvidia drivers. !!!! To cut a long story short, after a hunt on the web, spotted a couple of people who were told it was the "fault" of the monitor - I prodded the power off button on the monitor, (older Xiod / Samsung CRT), then after a few seconds turned it back on - "PROBLEM GONE !" ...so there you are, if you upgrade Nvidia drivers, and get a momentary balck screen, every time you click on something in nVidia control panel, or the sytem tray icon for nvidia, and if you happen to be using an old, but newish !!     - Hard Disk Problem Since two weeks ago, I had a hard disk problem. It said: "\Device\Harddisk1\D, has a bad blocks" I want to ask some questions, I think it is really long because I want to know the most reliable answer/opinions so I'm write clearly about my condition: 1.What should I do now? Now I'm in the middle of backing up my data by copying them, but event viewer sometimes gave me in the middle of copying: a.An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation. b.The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within timeout period. c.A CRC error (Someone tell me it is because the data that was copied is in Bad Blocks. Someone tell me that these event are caused by the Bad Blocks because these event start appearing as my HD get Bad Blocks, but I want to be sure that I don't have any other hardware problems. Also, someone tell me, another hardware error doesn't cause bad blocks. Is it true? Could someone clarify this? 2.I wonder what caused the bad blocks? Because, there is 3 HD in my Computer. The first one is where I installed my Windows. It is 6 years old and never had any Bad Blocks problem. Now it still doesn't. (I hope it doesn't/won't appear because I make two partition on it C:/ and D:/ and many important files especially in D:/, C:/ is where I installed Windows and many other programs.). The second one is the HD with Bad Blocks.It was bought 1 years and 3 month ago. Some people said it was because overheating but this HD has lower temperature in SMART Test (41 C while the other two is 43-45 C) and sudden movement, I still don't think this is the cause because if it it true, the other two could also have Bad Blocks but it doesn't happen. The third one is my Brother HD that has same type and was bought on same day with my HD that has Bad Blocks. His still doesn't any problem with Bad Blocks. Using Speedfan, The fitness of my HD that has Bad Block is only 57% while my 6 years old HD is 98% and my brother 95%. So, I wonder what caused the differences, I used all the HD with same working time ,obviously (all the HD is powered up as my PC is powered up). A Comupter technician tell because there is too much data in my HD, I think that not really correct, my 6 years old HD in D:/ partition has only 1% free space from 20GB (about 110MB), while this HD with Bad Blocks still has about 16-20% free space from 160GB (about 35GB). 4.Some people say that Bad Blocks could be cause by Logical or/and Physical problem on the HD and if it was Logical, it could fixed with some program/software, it is true? 5.I've brought my PC with all the HD to a Computer Technician and he told me that the HD (that with Bad Blocks) is fine and he told me to format it to fix this problem. Should I do as he says or get a new HD? 6a.If I should/must get a new HD, should I run a HD Check Utility as precaution there is not Bad Blocks in the new HD? 6b.If I copied backup data from my External HD, will the new HD get Bad Blocks problem? 7.In my brother HD there is a weak sector when I'm verify his HD using HDDScan, there is a folder that took about 15-30 seconds to access, it is about 15GB and has about 30.000+ files.This folder was always like that since several months ago when it was created, it holds several games for PC.     - WinXP won't open downloaded EXE files. I've a friend with WindowsXP Home. She just installed a new modem and got dial-up service. (Lives in the boonies.) She downloaded the Skype and ZoneAlarm setup executable, but when she tries to run them she gets an error that Windows can't open them, not a valid executable. I made sure EXE and LNK are in the file types associated with Application and Shortcut. Also, she can run cmd.exe, so, it's not an association problem...it must be those files. Had had her look at the properties, and both say foo.exe as opposed to foo.ex_ or some other indication that they weren't fully downloaded files. Any ideas what I can check or do? Thanks!     - startup I started my computer but it gets as far as splash screen then hangs up for 2 hours before loading. I took out the cmos battery for 20 seconds then when i put it back in the computer booted normally. When i closed the computer down and tried to open up again the same problem occured.     - The battery on the motherboard If the battery is not working anymore will that cause the PC to stop working? I checked the 3 volt 2032 battery and it was dead. The PC one day didn't start up.     - geheugen probleem Compaq Presario 6000 series Doordat de Compaq Presario van mijn dochter nogal traag was geworden, leek het mij zinvol om het register eens onderhanden te nemen met Registry Mechanic. Er werden heel wat fouten gevonden en hersteld. Bij de systeeminfo ontdekte ik echter dat het RAM-geheugen van deze PC 224 MB zou zijn in plaats van 256 MB. Het BIOS geeft echter nog steeds 256 MB aan. Bij de Windows systeemeigenschappen staat ook 224 MB. Ik heb met een aparte opstart cd-rom van Windiag het geheugen langdurig getest. Daarbij werden geen fouten gevonden. Hoe kan het dat er geen fouten worden gevonden terwijl ik wel 32 MB geheugen mis? Heeft het ontbreken van die 32 MB consequenties voor de goede werking van de PC en is het noodzakelijk om de DIMM te vervangen, of kan ik er gewoon een extra DIMM van 256MB of 512MB bijplaatsen?     - DVD writer drive not accessible? I have a DVD Combo with CD writer (D drive in my PC) and I have also a Dual Layer DVD writer (E drive). Both are SONY make. Kept a DVD in D drive and copied it to E Drive using Nero, Jolly Well. E drive is working properly as per the properties. When I make a DVD using Nero Express 6 (this came with the DVD burner), the DVD plays well in Drive D and when I hit Explore Drive/Device D, it displays all the contents in the DVD. But when the same DVD is kept in Drive E, hitting Explore shows nothing in it. Clicking on E drive in windows Explorer says E:\ is not accessible--Incorrect function.     - Green Gauze Monitor and Slowdown at Windows Loading Screen Hey all, recently when I start my computer I get a green rolling screen which after 20 seconds flicks to the black bios startup. During the bios check the screen flashes green as if it's degauzing several times...then after 5 minutes of the windows loading screen windows starts up in a really slow manner, the deskop appears, then goes blank, then the icons and tool bars appear. My computer has always started really quickly and I've never had the green gauzing effect...even when the monitor powers down it fades to a bright green dot in the middle of the screen. Once the tedius loading it out of the way windows actually works fine, and even high spec games like CoD4 run without error (but the screen does flash green whilst changing resolution to play them) I assumed that it was the monitor itself, but that doesnt explain why windows is taking ages to load...is it a problem with the graphics card? do you think it's hardware or software based?     - large external drive OK? I have a 5-year-old Dell desktop computer running Windows XP SP3. I want to buy my first external hard drive and have my eye on an Iomega 500 GB drive. One of the reviewers of this drive at Amazon said that it wouldn't work with her older computer, which is about the same age as mine. The reviewer asked at a local computer store and was told that in general the large external drives don't work with older computers. (My internal drive is only 50 GB, as I recall.)     - pioneer dvr can't install anything Hello...........This is my first post. I have been using a Pioneer dvr-610 (device manager says Pioneer dvd-rw dvr-110d) with win XP and I have never been able to install anything from it. For some reason I get messages basically saying it's unable to complete setup.exe and autorun. To setup the computer I had to use an A-Open dvd rom. The Pioneer will play music cd's. I dual boot XP with win 98 se and the Pioneer works perfectly when I'm in win 98. I've looked through many of the posts here but nothing quite like my problem seems to exist.     - Another USB Quandary I'm playing with two things, an Intel DG965SS mobo and Microsoft's UVCView.exe USB tool. UVCView shows that there are seven root hubs, two of which contain the magic word: Enhanced, which means they are Hi-Speed USB. The board has ten physical ports. When I inventory the physical ports....plug in a device and see which root hub/port is connected to each physical port, none of the physical ports match up to the two Enhanced Root hubs shown in UVCView. At first glance that would mean I don't have any hi-speed USB ports, right? But, the Intel product specs claim hi-speed on all ten physical ports. So, is it possible that UVCView isn't showing me the entire story, and that the mere presence of an Enhanced root hub (anywhere) means I've got hi-speed everywhere?     - Computer shutting down randomly I am fixing a computer for a friend. It seems to shut down without any reason and then reboot (no BSOD). I reformatted the hard drive, put in new memory, new video card and new soundcard to bypass the onboard audio/video. It seemed to work ok, but after about 45 minutes, it shut down. I clean the CPU fan, checked all the connections and cannot find the source of the problem. I have upgraded to SP2 as well, but again - I thought at first it might have been a virus or software problem, but now I am not so sure. I am going to run the ASUS probe software and see if the temperature is fluctuation, but it seemed quite cool. Any ideas? Does this sound like a motherboard issue or a power supply?     - No Audio for DVI-D input When I connect my ViewSonic LCD monitor by the DVI-D cable the sound is gone.     - unable to install Realtek High Definition Audio drivers 5423 I am unable to install Realtek High Definition Audio drivers. The install fails irrespective if I attempt to install from CD included with motherboard or downloaded file from web site. InstallShield starts then halts and advises Realtek High Definition Audio driver install has failed. InstallShield then closes. I'm hoping I am in the right place for my problem.

I recently installed a Dell USB keyboard which has a smartcard reader built
in. Running Win XP Pro SP2. As soon as I plugged it in XP recognized the
board and reader and installed Windows drivers for both. I have SD0, SD1,
and SD2 CardReader Disk Drive entries in my Hardware Manager, and they all
show as working properly.

I have a smartcard that I know works on an ACR38 reader (which I do not
have), but I can't "see" this card on my system. At a minimum, should I be
able to see a drive entry of some sort in File Manager for the CardReader
"drive"? Even though XP installed its own drivers, do I need to install the
Dell-supplied card reader driver? I'm trying to figure out how to see it at
XP's level before trying my application software.

Always install the hardware drivers from the manufacturer... Microsoft
usually had nothing to do with your hardware - so my advice is not to depend
on Microsoft for the drivers (no matter in what way they offer them.) ;-)
