Using CHKDSK with XP
I ran chkdsk (from within My Computer) on my system drive. It completed the
first couple of phases but then said that it could not complete chkdsk. I was
expecting it to give me the option to schedule chkdsk when the PC was
re-booted but to no avail. I decided to re-boot anyway but chkdsk did not run.
How do I carry out a full chkdsk on my PC?
I'm running Win XP Pro SP3.

Parallel port driver - language version
Hi ! I'm experiencing the following problem.
I'm using a small program NASM to control windows XP home edition parallel
port.
For that I use Userport.exe and UserPort.sys wich is copyed to
c:\windows\system32\driver. In windows xp home edition portuguese, it works.
When using an english version, it locks NASMIDE but Windows works normally.
Another thing I noticed is that the edit.com (wich I believe is used by
NASMIDE) also hangs...
Any ideas please ? Why does Userport.exe work in the portuguese version ?
Thank you very much.

HP Image Zone - uninstall/reinstall problem
Hi Guys,
Had a HDD go bad on me, and replaced it. Cloned the old HDD to the new
one and did a repair install because some of the windows files got
corrupt.
All good now execpt for one thing: HP Image Zone now comes up running
installer, then gathering information then the weird bit - it bring up
a dialog box with some text saying something to the effect that:
"The rescource you are trying to use is on a CDROM or other media,
please select device" I then have a button "Browse" and a drop down
box simple with "1" in it.
Ordiniarily when you see this type of message it gives you the name of
the file its trying to find, but in this case I get just the "1" and
pointing it at the CDROM via the browse button with the HP cd in
doesnt seem to help.
So i tried a uninstall/reinstall via Add remove programs, that failed,
so I did it via the HP CD, but after reinstalling - same error.
Anybody got any other suggestions? Upgrade MS .Net maybe?
Please help,
Cheers

Trying to recover XP after failed upgrade to SP3
I had my system just the way I wanted it and everything I wanted to do
worked.
Then I upgraded to SP3.
SP3 wouldn't boot and nor would safe mode so I had to "repair" my
installation by reinstalling my original SP1 installation disk and
installing SP2 over the top of it.
Sadly my system is nowhere near the state it was in before. Since SP3
caused this problem and SP3 intransigence in not allowing me to remove
it in the usual way has caused a lot of problems that would take me 20
mins to list here ... however
A brief list
RPC server not working. Now partially fixed
DCHP has to be started manually each time I start the machine.
NVIDIA driver installation program doesn't recognise NVIDIA Geforce
FX5200 card and won't install. I have downloaded 4 different drivers
and have the CD driver which will run but still won't fire up the card
upon a reboot.
Drivers are:

91.31_winxp2kmce_english_whql
169.21_forceware_winxp (US version)
169.21_forceware_winxp (International version)
Some programs won't run from links.
AVG email detection disabled.
Specs:
Pentium 4 2.8GHz.
1.25Gb DDR PC2100 Ram
I also have Windows 2000 Professional on the computer and that has no
trouble booting or recognising the graphics card.
Any suggestions?

Unable to retain multimedia keyboard 1.1 mouse settings
I am using Windows XP with the Microsoft Multimedia Keyboard 1.1 along with
the associated "Standard Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse".
Everything works correctly, except the pointer options are not retained
between system restarts. I need to manually set "Select a pointer speed" and
"Enhance pointer precision" everytime I boot. It works as expected until the
next time I boot the system.
I think the problem started when the original keyboard/mouse failed, and I
replaced it with a new identical keyboard/mouse. During the process I
uninstalled/reinstalled all the software, downloaded new software, etc.
I believe that an old set of software or settings is being loaded after the
initial boot, so that the settings are not retained. I notice that there are
two similar directories as follows:
"c:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliTYpe Pro"
"c:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint"
The Driver hardware details show:
Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard (IntelliType Pro)
Driver Date: 11/7/2006
Driver Version 6.10.155.0
File version: 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
How do I totally get rid of a previous install of the IntelliType
software/settings so that I can do a fresh install??

Dual-boot, 4GB seen under Vista, wish to enable /3GB switch under
Have a dual-boot PC with Vista 64bit and XP Pro 32 bit.
I have enabled the memory remap in the BIOS so I now can see the 4GB (just
added another 2 GB on PC with already 2GB). In XP I only see 2GB (instead of
2.93GB when Memory remap was *disabled* - then Vista was just showing 2.93
GB...)
My understanding is that I should add the /3GB switch in the Boot.ini file
of XP, but I am unsure on how to do since I do not get the same look and
content : Microsoft suggest that the Boot.ini file should look like this then
add the /3GB at the end:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="????" /3GB
But my Boot.ini file looks like this (pls note the *FASTDETECT
/NOEXECUTE=OPTIN* at the end :
;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
Do I simply add another space at the end and type ''/3GB'' (without the
quotes) ? Or shoud I remove anything before ?
Please remember that this is a dual-boot machine - I do not wish to screw
anything (as I am not expert enough to feel at ease to recover from such a
mistake...)

Problem With Large Hard Drive
Hello,
Hardware is Dell Inspiron 9300, Windows XP MCE + SP2. I installed a
250GB WD hard drive in January 2008, and removed the existing 80GB
drive. The new drive is IDE, as this seems to have been the last
Inspiron made without SATA. The following story has happened three
times since January.
I booted the WD Data Lifeguard Tools CD 11.2 and created a partition
of size 250GB. I booted Dell's XP CD and installed XP without
incident. The computer runs fine for a while. After some time, the
computer boots to an empty text screen with a cursor in the upper-left
corner. This is right after POST and before anything Windows-related
happens. So, F8 doesn't work, safe mode doesn't work, and there's no
Windows logo. The only thing that I could think of that worked was to
delete the partition and recreate it.
The first two times that this happened, it was after about 2 months of
using the computer. Everything worked very well in that time. I
can't think of anything that happened out of the ordinary on the days
when the computer stopped booting.
The third time, I did a few things slightly differently. I installed
CentOS (and a swap partition) on two other partitions. I installed
GRUB as well, thinking that this might help diagnose the problem. It
turns out that XP stopped booting after less than a month. GRUB works
fine, and I can boot into CentOS without problem. When I try to boot
into XP, it shows the "rootnoverify" and "chainloader" lines on the
screen, and then nothing more.
Here's a list of things that I've tried, in no particular order:
I ran FIXMBR and FIXBOOT from the XP recovery console. This removed
GRUB, but it didn't boot into Windows. I reinstalled GRUB after this.
I ran chkdsk from XP recovery console.
I checked the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files. They match the files on
the XP install CD.
Interestingly, I can read the files from the XP partition in CentOS.
I've been able to back up my files *after* the boot problems each
time.
Anyone have any ideas? I appreciate the help.

New cloned Hard Drive question
Hi,
The motherboard on my old PC went bad and I had to get a new PC. I installed
a second 200G HD and cloned the HD from my old fried computer to this new
secondary HD. My new PC runs XP Pro and the new cloned drive, I'm attempting
to get XP home to operate. I can get this cloned drive to boot by changing
the BIOS but I can only get XP to load in safe mode. Previous to getting safe
mode there's a blue screen with suggestions and the problem listed there is
STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xBA2F8750, OxBA4E342C, 0xBA4E3128).
I tried copying all the drivers from the XP Pro that shipped with my new PC
into the Drivers folder of the non booting system but it didn't solve the
problem.
I need to get this running since my kids had lots of games and educational
software on the fried PC that can't be easily replaced.

Recently an installation disk created problems with my CD's drives,

The problem is that I hear a clicking sound when they play. I was

solved the problem.
Once again an installation disk (the same one) has created the same
problem. I looked at the IDE's and I now have three primary and three

Question - I would like to do the uninstall thing again. Should I do

Removing the CPU heatsink and fan assembly
Ok, I did it, myself. I used a large straight head screwdriver and some large
needle nose pliers. I first removed the motherboard from the PC, after
labeling or labelling the motherboard connectors with the front panel
connectors with post address labels. I then took a good look at how it was
hooked up and then pushed down with the screwdriver and pulled out with the
needle nose plier the heatsink and fan hook-up and presto! I didi it!
Now, isn't it better when someone isn't jealous and will tell someone with
precise ways of doing things.
Ok, gotta go, but I feel alot better. It took me days of dealing with
morons to finally get this to go. I did this myself without any help, wait I
take that back. There was one person who said to use pliers and a
screwdriver, but he didn't go into detail. I did that, going into detail.
See, I don't need to do PC tech work for a living, at least, not yet.

Intel Extreme Graphics
Wow... all these threads date three years back....
Is there ANY known fix for this... I've noticed all of these threads
about the subject of upgrading the craptacular Intel Extreme Graphics

been researching for a few weeks now and found nothing... absolutely
nothing on getting a permanent fix for this other than reformatting
but forget that, I will not do it.
I also get the same error of "New Hardware Found" when done with the
BIOS... and that's everyone's failed remedy.
Contacting Intel is hopeless... I never got a straight answer on how
to correct it. Nor did I think the support dude know how to fix it...
the best suggestion I got was to reformat... and then I got a refusal
when asking Intel to provide a legit copy of XP so I can, in fact,
reformat.... lol - HYPOCRITES Tag: Original WinXP Pro OEM disc (before any sp releases) Tag: 331842

OT: APC BK650MI ...
Anyone know how to get XP Home to automatically shut-down, when there is a
power outage ?
Years ago I bought an APC Back-UPS 650 (not the "pro" version i.e. it didn't
come with Powerchute CD and serial lead,...there is however a female RS232
port on the back of it.)
...I just bought on ebay, for 90p, an "APC basic signalling lead," which I
understand is an RS 232 with unusual pin-outs and a resistor across two pins
somewhere ! i.e. it's an APC 944-0020C
http://www.apc.com/support/faq.cfm#5
...and it's now plugged in ! I suspect there is some sort of comminication
on the RS2323 lead, because if I go into XP power management | UPS tab and
change COM 1 to COM 5 I get an error message on the UPS tab in XP Power
management. I've selected APC Back-UPS in Power management, and any change
in settings in there, takes a good half minute before the timer bottle goes
away.
...anyhow, cutting the mains power so that the battery kicks in, does not
produce any messages on screen.
I haven't been able to install the APC Powerchute software. i.e. I've
downloaded several versions and tried them, and each one says "unable to
locate an APC battery on a USB port" !! ...so I've tried locating an older
version that hopefully will detect an RS232 port.
...any clues gratefully accepted !

problem in detecting empty DVD's
I have a intel 3.06GHZ processor with 915GML-V MSI mainboard with 1.2 G
of ram and 400GB HDD and a LG 20X DVD RW.
The problem with my computer is when i try to play a movie DVD, i
works fine but if is have a empty DVD disk in there it is no
recognising the disk. I tried various branded disks but no go. Update
the firmware and then deleted the upper filter and the lower filter an
then restarted. Nothing works out. I have no issues with CD's but it i
the DVD's that is causing the problem.. plz hel

4000 ergonomic keyboard DISASTER
I decided to try this keyboard (the USB wired version) and am having problems
I cannot believe. Here's the list:
The scroll wheel on my mouse ONLY zooms text size; it doesn't page up and
down as it did before. (The mouse wheel setting is set to "scroll one
screen." Why does putting on a new keyboard mess with the MOUSE??)
I can't use ALT-TAB to cycle among running programs. All it will do is
cycle among tab sites on the page that's up.
In FireFox (yeah yeah I know) PGUP / PGDOWN cycle among tabs instead of
moving the pages up and down. At least they work in IE7.
I can't click on a program icon on the task bar and bring a running program
to the front. In fact, with this and the loss of ALT-TAB, I can't BRING a
running program to the foreground.
Something is overriding my folder options: when I click on a folder within
Windows Explorer, it pops a new window. My folder options say, open in same
window.
I tried to write up my problems and the ENTER and PGUP / PGDOWN keys didn't
work at all. I hope it isn't because I use OpenOffice instead of Word for
that particular document; a keyboard that only works with Microsoft software
would be useless to me.
I tried uninstalling my old Logitech drivers and it did no good at all.
This can't be the way it's intended to work. Is this a known problem? Do I
need new drivers? Is there some setting I'm missing?? If I can't get some
answers that fix this Real Soon Now, I'm taking the thing back to BestBuy for
a refund, because it is useless in its current state.

CREATIVE ZEN NOT RECOGNIZED
Hi there. About a 2 weeks ago I've bought a Creative Zen 8GB player. It comes
with no driver installation - just synchronizing and exploring software. As
it is an MTP device, it should be found and fully recognized by Windows XP
Pro on which I'm running at.
However at my PC it is NOT recognized!!! I tried to plug it in my friends
computer - it was immediately recognized and he could explore it by windows
explorer, Winamp and WMP (10). I also tried to connect it into my work
computer - also with success...
Not with my own PC.
USB's are working well, have no issues with another devices, and ZEN is also
being charged when connected. But not recognized.
I have searched for hours at creative forums, at creative help base, tried
several things that were advised, but with NO SUCCESS!!!
PLEASE for any help!!! I'm going mad about it... Tag: Original WinXP Pro OEM disc (before any sp releases) Tag: 331771
I want to install a 1 terabite hard-drive and would like to make a
slipstreamed WinXP install disc that has LBA.
Will slipstreaming SP3 accomplish this?
