so it should be able to do more than 1024x768 hardware-wise.
One option, would be to try Powerstrip, if the driver
won't do it on its own.

The free utility here, is useful if you want to see whether
the monitor and the video card are capable of getting the
EDID table from the monitor. This probably won't help with
your current problem, except if you wanted to get enough
info for a mode line.

The mode line defines some of the numbers you'd pump into
Powerstrip. By taking the difference between adjacent
numbers, you get stuff like the "front porch", "back porch"
and the like. This is the line provided by my monitor.
(And no, I haven't used Powerstrip on a monitor here, so
cannot advise further.)
