I have the following Video card ATI Technologies Inc. 3D RAGE IIC AGP
and a BlueH H19W (16:9) monitor.

The monitor only displays as a 4:3. There are black vertical lines to
the left and right of the screen.

The driver I have installed is a Microsoft 5.1.2535.0 for the video
card, and the driver that came with the monitor.

I cannot locate a driver for the video card on any web site to see if
that rectifies the problem. I don't know if it would.

Note I can only manage to set the screen resolution to a maximum of
1024 by 768. Anything higher and I get a message saying input signal
out of range Don't know if this is relevant.

Can you provide me with assistance.

Thanks in advance.

Wow this is real a *old* Video Card. (Don't know if they are
still build nowadays.) It could be that it is just too old
to be used with this Monitor of yours. I've got a plain 19"
LCD Monitor, but I can't hook it up to this PC with the same
card as yours. The PC: Acer Pentium II. Does the Monitor
work in combination with a newer Video Card. So it might be
that you need to get a newer AGP Card.

Other then that I can't offer you more advice.

Without the proper driver, this board can never run at its full potential.
Given its age, it probably can't do 16:9 anyway, that's a relatively new
feature.

The overview here, says

http://ati.amd.com/products/rageiic/index.html

"ATI RAGE IIC

200 MHz internal DAC for high refresh rates and resolutions up to 1600x1200 "

so it should be able to do more than 1024x768 hardware-wise.

One option, would be to try Powerstrip, if the driver
won't do it on its own.

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm
http://forums.entechtaiwan.net/viewforum.php?f=7 (FAQ pages)

The free utility here, is useful if you want to see whether
the monitor and the video card are capable of getting the
EDID table from the monitor. This probably won't help with
your current problem, except if you wanted to get enough
info for a mode line.

http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm

The mode line defines some of the numbers you'd pump into
Powerstrip. By taking the difference between adjacent
numbers, you get stuff like the "front porch", "back porch"
and the like. This is the line provided by my monitor.
(And no, I haven't used Powerstrip on a monitor here, so
cannot advise further.)

Modeline................ "1280x1024" 108.000 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync

Good luck,
Paul

It's a very old card and based on the memory and drivers won't support
the new standards.

Are you absolutely sure that your monitor is 16:9? Although monitors
frequently claim to be widescreen, few are actually true 16:9. The most
common aspect ratio is 15:9 and this corresponds with the standard graphic
card resolution of 1280 x 768 or even 1920 x 1152.

Wide screen TV's are 16:9.

Wide screen monitors are 16:10

You can still get drivers from ATI for the Rage IIC, but you didn't say
what operating system you have. Also, the native resolution of the monitor
is 1440x900. Your video card cannot support that, but it will support some
high resolution modes. These will depend on the refresh rate of the monitor.
With your 10 year old video card 1024x768 may be the highest you can get at
the current refresh rate.

Not actually correct. Although most are, I have encountered quite a few
that are 15:9 and at least one that is 14:9. As televisions don't display
all the picture anyway, most viewers are probably unaware of the difference.

> Wide screen monitors are 16:10

Wide screen computer monitors come in all sorts of aspect ratios. 15:9 is
the most common because it does correspond with an available resolution from
most graphic cards. 16:10 is not so different from 15:9, but to use one of
the standard graphic card resolutions, the pixels are not quite 'square' -
but probably close enough that most viewers won't notice - though video will
be slightly elongated vertically.
