Hello,

I have a user that requires changes to the Com Port Advanced Properties
(Device Mgr>>Ports>>Com1>>Properties>>Port Settings>>Advanced). The next
thing I see is the message "You must have write privileges in the registry
for this device in order to modify the devices advanced settings". This is
being attempted from an admin-level local user account, so it is unclear
where these privileges would originate other than Administrator-level
permissions. This appears to be a default setting as it is the same on every
one of several PCs I have looked at in researching this up to this point. I
have also looked at the registry for any clues, but hate to rummage through
there more than necessary. Has anyone had occasion to modify these settings
and how did you do it?

TIA

SavoirFaire

I also have the exact same problem. I am replying to your post in the hope
someone will see 2 people with same issue and help us out.

I have no problem accessing the settings. Do you have a serial device
plugged into the port when you power up? Maybe it needs to be active
before you can change the settings.

I have a serial device plugged in to com 1. It is a Texas Instruments Impact
printer. I have several deployed in the building, and this is the only
computer that exhibits this behavior. Printer does work, but errors out at
times due to port setting speeds too high. On the other pc's in the building
resetting the advanced port settings cures the problem by slowing down the
data flow to something these old dinosaur printers can handle. The only
difference I know of between my main line pc's is that this one is a Compaq
Evo SFF d-510s The other machines are Dells of various models. The Compaq
suffered a hard drive failure. I replaced the hard drive and ordered restore
discs for the machine based on original configuration. I wonder if the
restore discs had a tailor made business limited version of windows not
allowing users to get too deep in to the system. Thoughts?

Have you checked the basic port settings to see if changing the Flow
control makes a difference? The default seems to be none, try Hardware
or X-On/X-Off.
