Win XP/SP2, HP Deskjet 840C, newest drivers.
When I print say a picture there are thin horizontal white lines about 1/4"
apart the whole way down.
This is even after changing the colour cartridge to an original HP and
properly aligning it via HP Toolbox.
Is this serviceable or is it a sign of wear in the rollers or moving parts?
Would like to get it going for another while especially since I've just paid
£21.99 for a new cartridge.
Replies appreciated.

With the printer power off, open the cover and you should see a clear
plastic strip (ribbon) near the back.
Take a clean dry cloth and gentle wipe the strip to remove excess dried ink.

The printer is likely worn out, so it isn't indexing the paper properly=20
anymore.

Thanks for the reply, will try that.
Should have added that it prints plain black text OK which is why I changed
the colour cartridge.

Found this on HP support site here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/fastFaqLiteDocument?lc=en&cc=uk&dlc=fr&docname=bpd07098#
HP Deskjet 810c, 825c, 830c, 840c, 845c, 880c, and 895c series printers
Running a sample page
NOTE: This test does not work with the HP Deskjet 6830v and 6840
series printers.

1.. Turn the printer on.
2.. Press and hold the RESUME button until the printer starts printing.
3.. Release the RESUME button.
Running a diagnostic test
1.. Turn the printer on.
2.. Press and hold the POWER button.
3.. Press the RESUME button four times.
4.. Release the POWER button.
NOTE: There is no internal clean test for the HP Deskjet 810c, 830c,
880c, and 895c series printers.

Also cleaned that strip and ink off the rollers. It appears to be
working OK now.
