    - Recover 500Gb of files I want to recover files from a full external HD that are not available to Windows XP any more.     - Nvidia 9600GT Problem I've posted my problem to a couple of support groups and so far I haven't been able to solve my problem, at least not completely. Recently, meaning a couple days ago I upgraded my PC's video card to a Nvidia 9600GT series card from an ATI X1600. I am running a fully up to date version of Windows XP Professional. I uninstalled the ATI drivers and other related software before I switched cards. I then installed the Nvidia Forceware software. I also reinstalled the Viewsonic driver for my VP2330 flat panel display. Viewsonic recommends for best results to run the monitor at a resolution of 1920 by 1200. I did just that when using the ATI video card although it wouldn't work in DVI-D mode. Now when I set the resolution to 1920 by 1200 the font rendering has problems. Rather than having black text, the text displays in a multitude of colors. This is also true for text displayed in white, or any other color that I've tried for that matter. Activating cleartext has helped somewhat making text more legible, but I haven't been able to fix the text color problem. If I run the monitor at 1600 by 1200 everything works as it should. Has anyone come across this sort of problem before? And can it be fixed? Or is this a compatibility issue? Thanks Tag: Lifecam VX 3000 Tag: 330862

    - No sound Tried to play music on my computer (Win XP SP2) but cannot seem to hear any sound through my Microphone even though the Windows Media Player is playing the music.     - How can I tell if my computer's motherboard is DDR2 compatible?     - Strange Keyboard Problem: I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2 The problem I have is this: sometimes like on Yahoo or MSN when I click on something and then click backspace it doesn't do it. I see it cycling but then it just sits. I've noticed it does this on other sites as well but not all. In most cases when I click the backspace button or key it does so but in these other instances I have to click it twice and sometime 3 times. I shouldn't have to do this. When I click on the backspace key or button it should immediately backspace without me having to repeat it. Does anyone know why its doing this or can offer any suggestions?     - MS Installer Cleanup utility I'm trying to uninstall some software (Palm Desktop), which gave an msi error and failed to install. Palm's advice to me was to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and use this to erase leftover registry entries from a previously deleted version of their software. I obtained the CleanUp Utility from the MS site and tried to run it.     - display driver problem Hi all, I am using a hitachi LCD-Flat display, intel- PXA255 processor with WINCE 5.0 running on it. I am getting a side effect in the display i.e a very light projection of red color towards the right side of the icon till the end of screen. I had changed the RGB settings but no effect.     - Bluetooth icon missing from control panel I have a Dell Latitude D610 with a built in bluetooth adapter. When I do a fresh OS install on other similar machines, I am able to see the Bluetooth icon in the control panel. I believe this machine used to have the Toshiba Bluetooth stack on it. However it has since been removed. I can confirm that there are no unknown devices or devices with error in the device manager. I tried running C:\windows\system32\bthprops.cpl and nothing happens. I can also confirm that c:\windows\inf\bth.inf exists and is the original (SP2) version. There is also a string value in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run called "BluetoothAuthenticationAgent" that has the value "rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent".     - Help with 6000 Wireless Keyboard Hello, I'm struggling with a problem I have seen online elsewhere, but no solutions.... I have this wonderful keyboard and mouse, mouse works, kbd doesn't. I have already tried: Changing channel on receiver Hitting the connect button on the keyboard Replacing the batteries Moving the reciever around. I have downloaded the lastest driver.     - Configuration problem or defect drive? I already tried to get help on this but wasn't successful - so this is my second shot. My first attempt was a month ago and I did a lot of reading since - equally unsuccessful. The Problem: My Asus DRW2014L1T won't open it's door for me. It also doesn't recognize any CD's I 'force' into it (emergency open). So far this sounds like a hardware problem. There are some aspects though that make me doubt that: during boot my other DVD drive is correctly displayed as PATA (Pioneer DVR 112) but no mention of the Asus (no mention of the SATA HDD either by the way - so maybe that's normal?). In 'My Computer' the drive is listed as 'CD-Rom' drive. In 'Device Manager' it is listed under the correct name and as properly working. In 'Computer Management/Disk Management' it's the same as in 'Device Manager' - the Pioneer is recognized as DVD, the Asus is listed as CD-Rom drive.     - How to diagnose QueryDosDevice Failed error I've started to get the "QueryDosDevice Failed. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service" pop-up rather consistantly. Is there a way to find out which requested service is causing the problem? The last time i had this problem my Profile became corrupted. Windows somehow fixed the Profile, and i stopped getting the error message. This time however the Profile is acting strangly, some programs wont run, for example iTunes complains about not being able to verify my Audio drivers, and stops working. Something else i've notice is that Task Manager is "dimmed" and unavailable for use. Also when i type CTRL-Alt-Del only the Cancel button is available. The HD i am using is fairly new, about 6 months. I migrated from a smaller ATA drive to a Segate 250 SATA drive. I use the migration tool provided with the new drive and it worked perfectly i didn't lose any data. I am mentioning this because i don't know if this is related to my "QueryDosDevice Failed" problem. I setup a new account and profile, and noticed that as soon as i tried to use iTunes i got the Audio errors, and the "QueryDosDevice Failed" pop-up started.     - Lines on print? Win XP/SP2, HP Deskjet 840C, newest drivers. When I print say a picture there are thin horizontal white lines about 1/4" apart the whole way down. This is even after changing the colour cartridge to an original HP and properly aligning it via HP Toolbox. Is this serviceable or is it a sign of wear in the rollers or moving parts? We are looking for equipments that might aid the disabled (mainly those who are not that good in movement), and one of the things we are planning to get them is trackball.     - "USB Sound Device" The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) I'm trying to attach a McLelland USB Preamp to my desktop PC. The desktop PC is running fully patched Windows XP Pro SP2. This device is supposed to come up as "USB Sound Device" which it does in Add Hardware Wizard. It is also supposed to use the defauilt USB drivers included with Windows, but the Add Hardware Wizard can't find drivers for it.     - is this a bad hard-drive? HD is a Seagate 40GB ATA internal drive (model # ST340014A). I'm replacing a failed Seagate (same model). Put it in a working PC, saw it in Disk Manager and formatted it in NTFS. Once that was complete, the word "Healthy" was seen in DM. Plugged it into the old PC so I could boot to CD and reinstall the OS, but I see no messages on the monitor. The video on/off light just slowly blinks on and off like it's not getting a signal. Checked all the cables and they seem to be firmly seated. The HD spins up, but it's not as loud/active as I expect it to be. Plus, when I try a Ctrl-Alt-Delete after awhile, I hear two sharp noises/beeps from the HD. I'm not a HW guy at all, so don't know what the significance of this is, if any.     - bad hard drive? - WinXP Pro SP2 HD is a Seagate 40GB ATA internal drive (model # ST340014A). I'm replacing a failed Seagate (same model). Put it in a working PC, saw it in Disk Manager and formatted it in NTFS. Once that was complete, the word "Healthy" was seen in DM. Plugged it into the old PC so I could boot to CD and reinstall the OS, but I see no messages on the monitor. The video on/off light just slowly blinks on and off like it's not getting a signal. Checked all the cables and they seem to be firmly seated. The HD spins up, but it's not as loud/active as I expect it to be. Plus, when I try a Ctrl-Alt-Delete after awhile, I hear two sharp noises/beeps from the HD. I'm not a HW guy at all, so don't know what the significance of this is, if any.     - XP sees MiniDV camcorder via firewire but capture software cannot I recently got a new mobo and system (see specs below). I added my old Pinnacle Systems GmbH DV 1394 (PCI firewire card, circa 2001). I connected my Sony TRV17 MiniDV camcorder into the firewire port. Windows XP sees the new device and correctly identifies it as a Sony DV camcorder. This is confirmed in the Device Manager, where the DV camcorder is listed in the in the Imaging Devices section underneath my Logitech webcam. So far so good. When I run AMCap or WinDV to capture the video (I tried both), it identifies the device in the list of possible capture devices (that is, it sees my webcam and my MiniDV camcorder). However, when I change the active device from the drop-down menu from webcam to camcorder, the status message says "Initializing..." and the software freezes. When I play the video on my camcorder, no corresponding image ever appears on the screen. (FWIW, I cannot even shut down WinDV in the task manager until I turn off the camcorder.) So, in conclusion, XP says the hardware is ready to use. It correctly identifies it. But the capture software is having a problem communicating with the camera. (Btw, I tried connecting the camcorder into each of the two firewire ports, I restarted the PC between attempts, I refreshed the hardware device list. I haven't yet tested the camcorder on another computer yet.) 1. Is there any other capture software you recommend? 2. Could the webcam be messing things up? 3. Is the mobo somehow messing things up? 4. Is there a new MiniDV driver I need to install? I remember years ago there was something about the MS driver versus the Texas Instruments driver? Is this somehow related?     - Copying DVD contents to HD painfully slow... Hi, I've got relatively current gear (Seagate & WD drives, and a Plextor DVDR drive) but I'm finding the 90 minutes it takes to dump the content of a DVD onto my HD unnecessarily excessive. Is it supposed to take that long to copy 3-4 gigs worth of raw data to a HD? The target drive isn't even the one Windows is installed on, which is supposed to help speed-wise.     - Windows XP Pro SP2 - 4GB RAM but Windows only shows 3 GB Hi, I have 2 Dell laptops with same hardawre configuration, 4 GB RAM and Windows XP Pro SP2. They have been bought in an interval of one month so BIOS is not exactly at the same version. On the oldest one, Windows correctly displays 4GB, for instance in task manager when the most recent one only displays 3GB. I precise hat winmsd displays that my RAM is 4 GB in both laptops.     - DVD driver not reading/recognizing discs Hi, I have a NEC ND-3550A DVD driver that has recently being "on strike" for certain DVDs I tried to play on it. The DVDs were actually created using the driver itself, which worries me a bit as I have quite a few... You pop the DVD into the driver, it tries to read it for a while and then just changes the driver icon and when you double-click it, it's as if the DVD had no contents.     - Lost wireless keyboard + mouse Yesterday after doing an uninstall of iTunes browser I lost my HP wireless keyboard / mouse. I can use the PC if I plug in a cabled keyboard / mouse, but the wireless kb / mouse do not work. When I reboot and then plug in the USB receiver (for the kb / mouse) the Found New Hardware Wizard pops up. If I tell it to install it doesn't find a driver and fails. I don't know where to tell it to find a driver, and I don't have an install CD for it. I've swapped it to other USB ports, and have used other items in the USB port. Device Manager says it is not configured properly and has the option of selecting to install a driver. All other references to USB in Device Manager are functioning properly. There is not a driver on the HP web site, and HP chat was not helpful; they were grasping at straws toward the end. The did reference chipset files, but poorly. Restore to earlier dates does not help. I've not been able to locate any generic drivers. It seemed that the iTunes browser install was tangled up with the .NetFrame install some how.     - DVD drive not seeing disks Our "Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-107D" is consistently refusing to see certain types of disk, that it used to be able to read and write. 156MB CD-RWs and DVD-Rs do not show up - the drive appears to be empty.     - XP slowdown + best 5 1/4" bay HD caddy please :-) Sorry for possibly OT:'ing again but, it takes sooooo long trawling around for hardware on websites and reviews, and there's bound to be kind soul in here who knows all about hard-disk caddy's / removable hard-disk bays. ...little bit of background... I just know that I'm going to flatten this system soon ! It was like greased lightening after its' fresh install, with new motherboard and cpu and SATA hd's early last year. I've never pinned down what's slowing it down - I've been looking for that, on and off, ever since. I repair installed my XP Home ed. a few weeks ago, and dragged it back up to scratch - still no sign of that breathtaking responsiveness that was only there for its' first few weeks - last year. That's not to say it's slow - it's pretty responsive, ...and quite useable, ...and reliable, ...and it is VERY robust. ....but, ...I keep thinking I would like to rearrange the innards of my old Lian-Li PC-60 slightly so that my boot hd is in a hd caddy, which I can yank it out, and install from scratch onto a new hd, in a much more gradual and methodical fashion, at my leisure, over a period of days, and a few weeks maybe, whilst retaining "this" XP Home ed. installation for "normal" use, until I can permanently move, to my more "methodically built" XP Home ed. paltform. I really would like to pin-down, where the "slow-down" occurs. (PleeeeeeZ no EULA lectures...:-) I've spent considerable time, in bits, looking into this for several months. I keep an eye on running processes, hd bus mastering is working lovely i.e. hd transfer speed is excellent, I've looked, in detail, into every bios option, KB869256 didn't solve it, I've pruned out Windows services several times, rather I've "preened" my windows ....I digress.... Lian-Li removeable IDE hd-bay/hd caddies are quite expensive when I last spotted them on a site somewhere, a long time ago, and I don't know if they make SATA ones nowadays, ...I guess they do. ...and I don't want the cheaper plastic ones for obvious reasons, so does anyone know for half-decent quality hd bays and caddies ? Desktop A XP Professional SP2 PC has got two printers (HP and Samsung) connected directly (USB cable), and Printer sharing is turned on .     - Gameport doesn't work on XP Recently I bought a new computer. It doesn't have a gameport, so I installed my old sound card (Creative SB) in it. Windows (XP Professional) identified the card and gameport, and installed their drivers. The soundcard really works now (although I have an audio device included in the motherboard - it's Intel DG31PR, if it makes any difference). But the gameport doesn't work - it claims the joystick is "not connected". I tried every solution I found in the Knowledge Base, but none helped. Strangely, the soundcard was installed at I/O port 0xD000 instead of 220H. Windows doesn't let me change it. I checked with Intel, and the motherboard doesn't assign any I/O ports, so it must be windows (they hinted that it may be a registery issue). I don't know if it is related to the gameport issue, as the soundcard itself works fine. I'll alos comment that these very soundcard and joystick worked on the old computer. I'd thank any help.     - Modifying Advanced Com Port Properties Hello, I have a user that requires changes to the Com Port Advanced Properties (Device Mgr>>Ports>>Com1>>Properties>>Port Settings>>Advanced). The next thing I see is the message "You must have write privileges in the registry for this device in order to modify the devices advanced settings". This is being attempted from an admin-level local user account, so it is unclear where these privileges would originate other than Administrator-level permissions. This appears to be a default setting as it is the same on every one of several PCs I have looked at in researching this up to this point. I have also looked at the registry for any clues, but hate to rummage through there more than necessary. Has anyone had occasion to modify these settings and how did you do it? I have a Lifecam VX 3000 that used to work with Windows XP but has stopped
working now. As soon as I try to make a video call, the camera freezes. I
have uninstalled and re-installed a number of times but it's always the same.
Can anyone come up with a solution. (I have even tried a Logitek camera, but
the same thing happens)
