    - SATA host adapter or PATA-to-SATA converter? Recently, I bought a DVD drive that was SATA oriented. However, m system's motherboard is PATA oriented, and the PATA connectors can' connect to the SATA slots on the back of my new DVD drive. I need help deciding if I should buy a SATA host adapter for one of m empty PCI slots, or instead if I should buy PATA-to-SATA cabl converters (which would connect to my empty PATA power connectors an IDE slots and run SATA cables from them). If I buy the host adapter, would it be able to work in coexistence wit the rest of my motherboard, which is completely PATA oriented? And woul my DVD drive even work if it was hooked up to a host adapter? Or, could I just buy the PATA-to-SATA cable converters? This seems t be the most sensible option, but I'm unsure if the converters would eve work without a host adapter present.     - DVD-RW drive problems XP SP3 Just installed my first DVD +/- RW drive (Philips SPD6005BD) and am encountering what I think are fairly standard DVD issues but I don't know the answers. 1 - Many DVD's refuse to play because of "copy protecton" issues and tell me to update my video hardware drivers 2 - Those that do play, (non commercial ones) play without sound. Audio CD's play fine so the hardware is obviously connected to my onboard sound okay. I can install software provided on a DVD disc. The device shows in Device Manager as Philips SPD6005T and the driver is shown as Microsoft, 1/7/2001, 5.1.2535.0, signed by Microsoft Digital Publisher I can't make much sense of the DVD troubleshooter and am wary about updating a video card driver via Windows update site. All advice welcome please.     - USB port issue The beginner's guide to a backup program for my Windows XP SP3 desktop computer says to always connect the backup USB device directly to a port on the back of the computer. It emphasizes "Do not use 2-4 port connectors." I have a 7-port hub connected to one of the USB ports on the back of the computer. It seems to work OK, in that when I connect the USB drives to the hub, they show up in Windows Explorer and in the taskbar. Is there any reason not to use the hub for backing up to the USB drives?     - Disk error press any key to restart. hi friends, Some few months before i got an error message "A DISK READ ERROR OCCURRED " press any key to restart. I thought my hard disk gone so i bought an new Seagate 250 GB SATA hard disk and installed Windows XP SP2 with preinstalled SATA driver in it. Installation went smoothly and XP worked well. While using my system got freeze sometime and the mouse point do not move smoothly. Then i restarted my system now in boot screen it showed an new error message "Disk error press any key to restart" Then i didn't switch on my system for more than two hours then i started my system now my XP starts up without any error message. when i press ctrl+alt del the CPU usage was around 90 - 95% and in that SVCHOST process is about 99 and system idle process is always 99. when i try to open some windows application my system got freeze and once again i got the same "DISK ERROR " message. i have noticed that when my system freezes this error occurs. is there any program which automatically get rid of this error please suggest me. please help me out to solve this problem.     - resolution changes and KVM switch use This is follow on from a post of 16 June about KVM switches, XP and Vista. I've set up a KVM switch (Aten) between a PC running XP and one with Vista pre-installed. There are no keyboard or mouse problems and both displays appear on the one monitor. But I cannot retain the desired display resolution of 1920 x 1200 which both PCs can deliver and which they retain (along with icon positioning) when separately connected to the monitor. What happens is that I set up the displays on both PCs, arrange and set the icons. But if I close one or both PCs down or switch from one to the other, the chances are on resuming that the resolution has changed and the icons have self re-arranged. Some icons are where they were set, others randomly scattered across the desktop. On the XP PC I have to go, not into 'Settings', but into the graphics card Nvidia 6600GT settings window to reassign the resolution. That's easily done but the icons end up all over the place. I have a fairly cluttered desktop and the positioning of the groups of icons is important With the Vista PC, which has a graphics chip on the MoBo, it's really a matter of luck. Going into 'Settings' sometimes shows the resolution I want is available, sometimes it's just not there. How and when 1920 x 1200 is available seems to be purely a matter of luck and is something I haven't yet figured out. Switching off/coming out of and then returning to Settings sometimes allows the desired resolution to be chosen and applied. But the icons end up in a vertical line on the L/H edge of the monitor. Losing their position is the greater of the problems. Is this likely to be a KVM switch issue, a conflict between the XP and Vista OS's, a bug in both XP and Vista, an Nvidia and MoBo graphics issue or what? Most important is there a fix? That is one way there could be a difference between the two systems. I appreciate this is more of a hardware question but do wide screen monitor software have this facility? This now looks as though it may be a hardware issue rather than an IE7 / web design issue. I wonder if anyone on this NG may have an insight as to reason for and resolution of this irritating issue.     - SATA Drive installation Well, I'm almost forced into using this SATA drive, it's a SAMSUNG Spinpoint SP1614C with a SATA connector. I found out later that it didn't have IDE connectors, so I put it into a box and stacked it with other devices in the closet. Well, I'm finally using it. The reason I'm forced into using this drive is because this new mobo GIGABYTE S-Series GA-EP35C-DS3R has one IDE connector and 4 SATA connectors, or 6 SATA connectors and 2 GSATA connectors or 3 yellow boxes and 1 purple box connector. I figure the yellow connectors each can take 2 cords. So, we have it 6 regular and 2 extra-regular SATA mobo connectors. I"m loading up, or building a brand new DIY PC. It wasn't supposed to be that way, just a Dell 8300 upgrade, but the only thing I'm using from the Dell 8300 PC is a couple of expansion card, and maybe an optical drive. My question is; do I have to configure anything while the Windows XP Pro edition OS is loading up during the initial installation? A brand new drive with a operating system that I bought from a PC store for about $150 bucks a year and a half ago. So the OS isn't Dell's or HP's or wtf's. The OS is bought from Microsoft, I guess.     - Installing the Zalman CNPS9700 LED Cooler I have another chance now to do it right. Newegg.com just sent me back my mobo, I returned it and I hope now this mobo works right. I'm not sure if this is a new mobo, but it's not wrapped in plastic, so I figure it's the same one that they fixed. Or the mobo wasn't the problem, we will find out soon. Now getting to the cooler, I want to install it so the hot air goes upward towards the power supply and top exhaust fan, right? Now the plug wires that come out from the device to the fan controller are on the side of the cooler that doesn't have the Zalman emblem. Anyone who's bought one of these knows what I'm takling about. This can save me some trouble. I installed it so the outgoing wires to the fan controller were pointing upwards toward the power supply, and the Zalman emblem was pointing downward towards the video card and RAM sticks. I don't think that was the right installation? Does anyone agree with that or did I have it installed right, and the hot air blows out towards the controller wires?     - Found an old computer Dell Optiplex GX100 - has a password for bios? I found a dell Opitex GX100 computer. It seems to work, but it has a password for the bios...I am trying to format the harddrive as well to put XP on it, but I would like to change the boot sequence. Should I try and flash the bios to erase the password? Also, I am not sure of how much RAM is installed because it is a DELL and it doesn't tell me at start up. I am hoping that getting into the bios will help me with that. Lastly, is there a good FORMAT software for the floppy drive so I can format and then run XP from the CD rom drive to install?     - Did I just brick my laptop? So I wanted to install more RAM in my vintage Compaq Presario 915, which came with 256 Mb. I bought two chips of 512 MB each and happily installed them. The laptop booted, but instead of about 1Gb, it only recognised 496 MB (or thereabouts). I shrewdly deduced that one of the chips might have been faulty, and switched them around to see which one it could be. At the last try to boot, the laptop didn't boot at all. The fans comes on and stays on, the power light is on and stays on, the harddisk light comes on for a second, then goes dark, and I can hear the drive switching off. I interpret this to mean that the harddrive searches for RAM, finds none, then switches off. This is with a Gb of RAM in place. Is there hope, or did I brick it? Any insights appreciated.     - adding more ram to puter MoBo: MS-6330 v5.X based on VIA KT133A. The motherboard provides 3 sockets for 168 pin SDRAM DIMMS and supports a maximum memory size of 1.5 GB.     - changing disk volume name I'm slowly working my way through the manual for a new backup/imaging program to be used on my Windows XP SP3 computer. One recommendation is to change the disk volume names to unique descriptive names because restoring from backups might otherwise be confusing. In one example, Local Disk partitions were changed to SATA P1_C (C:), SATA P2_D (D:), etc. Since I'm nervous about making changes, I just want to make sure I won't be causing a problem by doing it.     - Cannot install hardware - new USB devices Hello George/Anyone who can help! As requested, here is a new post describing my problem. I cannot use ANY new USB devices since a few months ago (not sure when exactly?), and I always get the message "There was a problem installing this hardware..the data is invalid." USB devices which I have used previously are still working ok. I have tried many suggestions on the internet to resolve this, including the following from Microsoft, without success: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810882 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841567 I am running an older laptop (Toshiba Satellite 3005-S307/2002, Windows XP Home SP2) with 3 USB1.1 ports, but that doesn't seem to have affected other USB 2.0 items which have worked fine in the past (and still do - only new devices are affected. Makes me wonder if this problem was triggered by a recent Windows update?) To answer your question George, yes I have already tried replacing the driver.cab file. However, I copied the file from another XP laptop which I use for work. This is because my laptop only came with recovery CDs - I have never used these before and was afraid that I wouldn't be able to extract the original driver.cab file off the CD without starting a complete re-install? If this is not the case please let me know and I will try this option again. I am resigned to having to completely reinstall XP, because it seems that this is the only thing that's worked for others with the same problem. However, I would really appreciate any final suggestions before I have to take this drastic action.     - Magnetic screwdriver to use on mobo I want to know if it is a problem to use a screwdriver that has been run throught a magnet and now it's a magnetic screwdriver. An 8" #1 phillips head, which is hard to find anywhere. My favorite screw driver is now like a magnet.     - Microsoft Natural Egonomic Keyboard 4000 This is a USB keyboard. I've had this keyboard for about 9 months now. A few days ago, I noticed that some F keys were malfunctioning. For example, F2 in Windows Explorer or Excel no longer allows me to edit a file name or Excel entry. And F5 does not refresh but instead presents a file open window. I searched out installed the latest driver but this did not help the problems. I tried having the keyboard controlled by the BIOS and by the OS (BIOS setting). Didn't matter which setting I chose and made no difference. I have plugged in a PS2 keyboard for testing. It does not have any problems and the F2/F5 keys perform normally. Any ideas?     - Debugging sleep problems I have from time to time machines that just won't sleep on their own. They can be put to sleep manually, or set to sleep /w Sleeper.exe in the XP DDK tools. Tracing what is resetting the idle state & thus causing the machine not to go to sleep on it's own can in some cases be nearly impossible once many of the common variables are eliminated. It comes down to a "hunt and peck" looking for the culprit. I have done some research and came across the tool mentioned above from the Windows XP DDK v2600.1106 in the dir: "..\tools\acpi\sleeper\x86" is the tool: "sleeper.exe". Pretty nifty, but It doesn't seem to show any types of failures other than status messages on sleep states, as to whether it entered said state, or resumed from it. I have read the documentation included, what little is there, and it mentions attaching and breaking into a debugger. I don't know if this is necessary, or even how to do it if it is necessary. Will this tool do what I want? If no, please specify, if yes, how to go about it would be awesome. I did find the Windows Server '08 DDK v6001.18001. In it is a tool that replaces "sleeper.exe" in XP, however despite what the MS site leads you to believe it won't run on XP, only Vista/Server '08.     - Wireless Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Since I have upgraded to SP3, everytime I re-start a computer with a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and Mouse, the system hangs on startup. I can reboot into safe mode and the device manager shows two HID driver errors.     - Arctic silver or Thermal paste I just unstuck the CPU chip from the bottom of the heatsink. I had to use a hair dryer.     - My mouse pointer becomes 8 dots -- here's the video Once or twice a week, my mouse pointer turns into a half-inch vertical line consisting of 8 dots, and then within a minute either: (a) the pointer returns to being an arrow or (b) Windows crashes, requiring a reboot. I searched Google but didn't find any mention of this parti- cular problem. I'm prepared to reinstall Windows to solve the problem, but I'd rather not. Has any of you seen this particular problem? Do you have any suggestions? Can you recommend any newsgroups or websites for me to seek help from?     - power up the Mobo I removed the cover of the PC casing to observe these: When I switch on the wall socket power, the motherboard's yellow color LED come on, the CPU fan spin a while then stop (2 times). Note that I have not press the power button on the casing. If I have not even press the power button on the casing, should I see these activities on the motherboard? The other problem is when I press the power button on the casing, the system power up but it dies down. I need to press the button a 2nd time in order to power up the system. Right now I want to get this PC up and running so I'm gonig to use the old hard drive that I was using on my Dell 8300. This drive is a Seagate Baracuda 7200.7 80 GB hard drive. Hell with trying to push it. I'm using 2 optical drives. One as the master and the other as a slave. The master will be the burner and the slave to play games. The hard drive is going to be a sata.     - no internet connection I reloaded Win XP on a new hard drive after my old one died. I have two problems now. 1. I am unable to get an internet connection either by wire or WIFI. This is in a house with both wire and WIFI in which other computers work fine. When I check the drivers I find that there is a yellow question mark on all my "other " hardware including VGA driver, ethernet, PCI sound and multimedia. I am unable to find drivers on the installation WinXP ser2 disc. 2. My video resolution was incredibly low and when I go to display settings I am unable to move the slider bar to a higher setting.     - CPU chip stuck to the Heat Sink I just took off my heat sink and the CPU chip is stuck to the heatsink and it came off without pulling up the level that holds the CPU chip in place. You know when you place a CPU chip into the socket you have to lift the socket arm up 90 degrees and then place the chip in and snap the lever down. Well this came out and the lever, of course was still in the locked position. Is this a problem too? How do I separate the CPU chip from the heatsink? Take a razor blade and pry it off?     - Recreate Missing MBR & MFT A software that I was looking at somehow managed to replace or erase or corrupt the MBR and the MFT on a Seagate 500 GB drive. This drive was formatted as NTFS. My operating system is on another drive. My Windows XP sees the drive but is calling it Healthy(Active) and unformatted with no file system. However, a data recovery program sees what looks like all the original NTFS files still in existence on the drive. I used this recovery software to successfully copy a 17 GB file to another drive. This software can only recover files by copying them to a different drive. I don't have enough free space to copy approximately 400 GB from the 500 GB drive. Is there a way to recreate the MBR and the MFT based on the existing files on the drive so that I can use the files where they are rather than having to add another drive to copy to?     - NTFS Checking for Consistency It doesn't happen every time I turn my computer on, but I get a blue screen like the computer is running a scan disk before Windows boots up and it says something like there is an NTFS error and the computer needs to check the system for consistency.     - wireless mouse causes some apps to blink? It happened on two different microsoft wireless mouse: natural wireless laser mouse 6000, and a smaller one I forgot the name. Some applications "blinks" (I think it erases its content and repaints it). E.g. outlook express, and an old backgammon game called jellyfish.     - NIC stays active even when unplugged I have a Dell 300m laptop with a built in GB nic. Users have been complaining that when they are on the road starting up can take quite a while. They sit a varios stages of the boot an login. I have used some utils like BOOTVIS that analzes the boot process and see that there are long delays where XP is waiting for some reponse from the network - either checking for domain or whatever. One thing I noticed is that the NIC still appears active even when nothing is plugged in. It has the 169.x.x.x IP address bound to it as if it were connecting to a DHCP-less network. I believe this is what may be causing the long delays because the services that rely on finding some server or controller on the network see an active connection then need to wait for a time out. I cannot seem to find a way to turn off the NIC when nothing is plugged in. Is there a way? I also suspect that this is also causing a problem for when I try to put the computer into Hibernate mode. space for Express Recovery2. It says; make sure to leave unallocated space,
about 10 GB, in advance. When I partiton the hard drive, I'm supposed to
leave 10GB of space for this feature.
I partition a hard drive, and set all the GBs to C drive.
If someone could give me a rundown on how to install and leave a 10GB
allocation of space, then I would be happy. A step by step instruction would
be nice.
Please don't say to look at this teaching tool. I want someone to straight
out, step by step, run me thru this.
Otherwise, maybe I shouldn't allocate anything drive space and just do it
the way I've been doing it for years.
Usually, things are user-friendly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see a reason to be using it.

Just do it the way you always have, and leave the toy features
for another day.
