My daughters laptop HDD seems to have suffered impact shock and partition
has become damaged.
I connected it to my desktop and after a time it shows in My computer but I
cannot access the drive.
Partition magic refuses to open when drive is connected to the desktop. She
has some project work on this
drive that is not backed up eleswhere.I know there are a myriad of software
tools for recovering files etc
but can someone recommend one that really works.
Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to locate a disk recovery system so as to try to "recover" as
much files / documents as possible. The partition is not the only
thing damage since the laptop fell, the hard drive is physically
damage.

Once you hae finished the file / document recovery, you will need to
replace the hard drive.

Did you install the laptops HD in the PC as a Slave drive? If not, change it
to a Slave via the jumper/pins on the drive. You may also have to set the
present Master drive in the PC as a Master w/Slave depending on the drive and
setup.

Laptop 2.5 inch drives may not have jumpers on them like the regular
3.5 inch hard drives. One other possible method is to buy an 2.5 inch
external hard drive case (USB) and connect the drive with this. No
jumbers need to be changed.

I've got a Toshiba Laptop drive, (and since the OP said in
another post that his is a Toshiba) and on it I could
change it to master/slave, I have a US-Enclosure with the
instruction if the chip on it doesn't recognize the Drive,
one should try to change it to slave. So yes on some make
this is possible.

As I use mostly Linux (win98 on my older PC) I wouldn't know
any software for Windows, but if this happened to me, I'd use
a Linux Live-CD and salvage the files.... "System-rescue
CD-ROM" comes to my mind here. :-) Even on a Windows-box.

Most "better" recovery systems all use Linux type of operating system
in order to remove Windows operatiing system "overhead."

Interesting :-) I didn't know this..

I saw one anti-virus (can't remember which it was) on a CD-ROM and
it was running knoppix :-)

I'll leave this, before someone comes along and complains that this
is OT here.... Hope that the OP got his problem solved (salvaging
the files from the drive).

I was thinking about using something like knoppix on a disk.I am running
data doctor(bought it online) at present and detailed analysis is very
slow-it will take about 24 hours.
I ran the basic check and it found all the folders but nothing contained
within.
Drive is connected to my desktop using an external case.
Thnks so far
