CD-ROM (D:) drive disappears/reappears
I am running XP Pro and sometimes when I try to burn a CD, the D: Drive icon
is gone or disappears while I am looking at it. When I reboot, its there and
I can burn the CD? Sometimes it burns fine, other time it is gone? This has
happened approx. 20-25 times?
I have tried reinstalling windows for missing drivers, changed CD drives,
and recently made sure all connections from motherboard and power supply to
drive is correct and secure?
Any ideas? Tag: DVD-RW drive Tag: 331082
Samsung CDRW/DVD will not write to disc
I have Windows XP Professional SP2 stand alone home computer with a Samsung
CDRW/DVD SM 308-B. It runs & installs software CD's and DVD's ok.
Problem: On my home computer, I cannot copy data or other files from the HD
to the (high speed) CDRW disc; but I have no problems on my computer at work
that also runs XP Pro. I don't know which CD/DVD is installed at work. At
home, the Wizard says the "disc is not useable" and to try another, but I
just bought a new pack of High Speed CDRW's. The only files I tried were MS
Word processing files and a .wav file.
I haven't tried CD-R's because I am transferring data to give to others that
they may want to modify later.
Home computer does not have any third party CD/DVD RW software. The work
computer has Roxio installed but that didn't activate, I had success with the
Windows XP version.
I checked drivers and everything comes back OK, and updates come back as
current. Tried to uninstall - reinstall drivers but it did not change. I
also checked that IMAPI service was turned on - which is OK. Device was also
set to Record.
Any suggestions, or should I just pitch it and get new hardware?

Why does my USB 2.0 ports not perform at 2.0 speeds?
When I connect a device to any of my USB 2.0 ports on my computer, I get a
message that says "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a
Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port". What can I do to fix this problem?
In Device Manager, I do see a Standard Enhanced USB host.
I do not have a PCI USB card in the computer.
The USB ports are provided by my motherboard (ECS GeForce6100SM-M).
It doesn't matter whether I connect the device to the front or the back ports. Tag: DVD-RW drive Tag: 331068

Hard Disk Cooler for Temps above 55C?
Hello:
I recently installed HardDisk Tune 2.55 [HD Tune]to monitor my Hard Disk:
IC35L080AVVA07-0. I believe this HD was made by IBM
The status readings for that disk are all OK, except for temperature ranges
from 48C---59C. It's generally at about 51C but does go up gradually at
times to 59.
In Farenheit reading this would be: ~120--138 F
The FAQ for HD Tune reads:
"
The temperature of the hard disk should not exceed 55°C/131°F. By default HD
Tune warns you if the hard disk reaches this temperature. In this case it's
recommended to use a hard disk cooler to extend the life of the hard disk"
What exactly is meant by hard disk cooler, and how is this
applied/installed? Can you give me some links for such products? What would
be the simplest way to address this?
Thanks in advance:

DVD drive disappeared and can't uninstall
My DVD drive has disappeared several times. The first time I resolved it by
deleting Upper and LowerFilter registry keys (per Microsoft support article
314060 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060).
This time the Upper and LowerFilter registry keys are no longer there. I
still cannot see the drive in Device Manager so I can't uninstall the drive.
The drive lights up and I hear the disk spinning, so it doesn't seem to be a
power issue. The last time I had this problem it resolved itself after
several reboots. This time I'm out of luck. I've spent hours trying to
resolve it and I'm desperate - any help much appreciated. Tag: DVD-RW drive Tag: 331020
Power Surge On Hub Port - Please Help
Hi,
Please could someone help?
I have an Acer TravelMate 800 laptop which has 4 USB ports.
I have a Western Digital Passport external hard disk (320GB) and
whenever I try to connect this device I see the following error:
"Power Surge on Hub Port. The USB Mass Storage device has exceeded the
power limits of its hub port."
The device never appears in 'My Computer'.
I am prompted to disconnect the device and then click on 'Reset'.
I can connect a USB mouse in to any one of the ports and it works
fine. I can also connect a Kingston Data Traveller pen drive (512MB)
in to any one of the drives and that also works fine. It is only this
Western Digital Passport external hard disk which causes this error.
Can anyone help? Can it be resolved?
Any ideas most gratefully accepted. Tag: DVD-RW drive Tag: 331016

Possessed pointer
My pointer has suddenly become possessed. When I click in a Word document,
instead of placing the cursor there, it highlights the nearest word. When I
click again, it won't unhighlight the word. And when I move the pointer, it
drags the word around the document. Same thing happens in Outlook with
e-mail, i.e., any message I click on it grabs and tries to drag. Also happens
on the Web. And things I normally click on once to activate, I must now click
on twice. Draglock is turned off. Pointer was working fine a few days ago. I

USB Problem
My Windows XP Home edition no longer can read my USB stick(s).
Yet the stick(s) work on other computers.
Trouble shooter says the device is working ok but looking at properties it
says the file format is "RAW" and wants to reformat the stick. Even if I say
OK it comes back and says it cannot format it.
I Have tried the stick in another USB port that IS working a Ext. hard drive
but it still does not work.
I also tried a MMcard in card slot and it cannot be read either.
I have tried deleting the USB drivers and rebooting. When I do this it sees
New Hardware and loads the drivers but the same problem exists
Does this mean I have a problem with my USB driver software (USB Hub
controller?)
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Zotac 8600 GT
I have a problem with a video card I bought. I emailed Zotac and here is the
message I sent:
Dear Zotac,
I bought a Zotac Geforce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 128-Bit HDCP PCI-Express
graphics card on April 26 for $149.99 at Best Buy. I removed the drivers for
my other video card. I shut off the computer and unplugged everything. I took
out my graphic card and put in the 8600GT. I turned on the computer and it
made eight beeps before loading windows. The screen was also blank. I did
some research and found out that eight beeps can mean a bad video card or
memory. I considered the card to be defected. I exchanged the card for
another one. I tried it out today and it still had the same outcome. I
couldn't believe that I would of possible got two defected cards. I'm just
now wondering what the problem is. For you to clearly know, I will provide my
specifications of my computer.
Computer:
Gateway GM5067H Desktop
Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
1 GB RAM
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.20 GHz
300W Power Supply
PCI-Express slot
Video Card bought:
Zotac Geforce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 128-Bit HDCP PCI-Express
ZT-86TEH2P-FSL
Requires 300W power supply
I am not sure why it does not work. I also did more research and found out
my BIOS is Phoenix. It was hard to tell how to beeps go but there was a total
of eight beeps. I can still use my other video card with no problem. I am
certain it has something to do with the video card. My only question is what
is the requirements for the amps? There are no details on this on your site
nor Best Buy. I do not want to exchange my video card again without knowing
the problem. I have wasted countless hours on the video card. Your help is
greatly appreciated.
---------------------------------------
They responded with this message:
Dear Sir,
For 8600GT stand-alone, the card spends 43W. The +12V requires around 3.6A.
Some versions of 8600GT provided 2x3 pin power header at the front. You must
connect the power header with +12V.
Also, the original desktop system may be not compatible with all standard
VGA card. You may inquire the desktop maker for the compatibility issue.
-------------------------------------------
If anybody has any idea it would be great.
****NO power plugs for the video card I bought just so you know. My computer
has no problems running. It's only that video card when the issue occurs.
***I will contact Gateway.

WinXPpro sp2 and proliant server with raid??

I've never used or setup a Raid system so I don't know what to expect. I do

DVD-ROM Driver damaged and cannot reinstall
My Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2302 driver is corrupted or missing. I can uninstall
the driver ok. The Add New Hardware wizard finds the Toshiba DVD and trys

The Toshiba web site says there is no unique device driver for the C2302,
and that Windows XP supports it natively. I can use Driver Details to see
the driver files in C:\Windows\system32\drivers. The files are AFS2k.sys,

the driver files over the network from the Windows XP CD? Is there some
other way to fix this driver? Thanks!

Sony VAIO PCV-RX670 Desktop Freezes
My Sony VAIO PCV-RX670 desktop started freezes the other day. I put a

Spent a ton of time trying to fix the problem. Swapped in a backup OS

battery out to reset CMOS. Tested the RAM. None of this helped or
revealed any problem.
The one thing that helps is removing the CD-ROM drives. This lets me
use my computer for some time before a lockup, but it still happens.
With the CD-ROM's connected, I was having some trouble even POSTing.

different cpu / hd image...
I know it would of course have been best to have upgraded cpu first but, the
replacement cpu has not arrived yet.
...Packard Bell iXtreme 6052 / XP Home ed. fully MS updated.
Have just added 256mb pc2700 as it was partially strangled by its' factory
fitted 256mb pc2700.
...tidied it up ...lots !, pruned XP services and startup items etc,
...the remaining partially "strangled" effect is of course thanks to the the
Celeron 2.6's / lowly 128kb L2 on-die cache.
...and seeing as I'd reached that heavenly point where all hardware and
software is behaving in a robust and well-behaved fashion, I Norton Ghosted
its' hd onto my external USB hd in 1gb chunks, and burnt those out onto 6 x
dvd r's.
Now, when it arrives I will swap out the Celeron for a Pentium IV SL6GT
2.5ghz / 512bm L2 cache,
( couldn't find a skt 478 2.6ghz BX80532PC2600D / RK80532PC064512 SL6GU
SL6HB, SL6PP, SL6QR, SL6SB / QMT0ES, QWB5, SL6GU, SL6PP, SL6SB for a
sensible price ! )
My question is simply, if one were to restore the aforementioned hd image,
and XP discovers a different cpu, am I right in thinking that this should
not cause problems ?
btw this machine has never yet had any "significant" changes to hardware
that MS would have noted :-)

Frequent Crash of Windows XP
Hi,
I am facing the problem very often especially at one specific
location...
As mentioned in various posts.. we also suspected the hardware and we
have changed the hardware (infact did it quite a few times). We have
now replaced the complete machine of different brand etc.
The same hardware is running in my office perfectly fine. I have put
the machine on the raw power and left it running for few days. It
works even when the machine is abnormally switch off (due to power
loss) multiple time in a day.
Where as when the same machine with same configuration is running in
the field it carshes very offten with the error messages similar to "C:
\Windows\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt".
At times I am able to recover the disk from the crash.
I am basically looking for the answer that why does this machine
crashes, where as we do abnormal swtich off (without proper shutdown)
of the PCs in office / home, they don't crash. They why this machine.
Two configurations of the machine which we have tried are -
1. Via C7 Mother board with 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB Disk On
Module
2. Intel Borad with 1GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 4 GB InnoDisk Disk On
Module (HDD), multiple serial ports (4 in number).
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP2 without any hot fixes/
updates (earlier we were using Windows XP Embedded SP 2 with Feature
Pack 2007, we switched to XP Professional thinking we are missing
something in XP Embedded configuration)
We have tried different make of DOMs, suspecting something to do with
the quality of DOM. We have also tried switching of the "Write Cache
on Disk" option of Windows.
The application that we are running is basically polling multiple
devices on the periodic basis, every few milliseconds. It then writes
the data to SQL Express Database. Application is developed using MFC.
Any answer / tips are welcomed.
Thanks

of this computer) The device mangaer and troubleshoot do not recognize a

best memory config for xp
My system is running XP on an Athalon 64 processor with a DFI mobo. It is
still running fine, but currently only has one gig of RAM. I want to upgrade

Here are my choices:
1. 2GB using 400mhz DDR (2 modules)
2. 3GB using 333mhz DDR (3 modules)
I'm assuming that 3GB beats 2GB regardless of speed, but I am not that
familiar with how XP manages memory. I know that Vista (32-bit) will run up
to 4GB but I'm not sure about XP.

New Disk - Initialize, Partition, and Format
I've encountered a confusing set of messages when I boot my machine
with a new SATA HDD installed. I find that XP Pro wants to send it
through a wizard to initialize it and set it up as a dynamic disk.
Here is some relevant basic info on my machine from a Belarc Advisor
Audit
System Model
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EP35-DS3P
Main Circuit Board
Board: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. EP35-DS3P
Bus Clock: 266 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. F2 01/02/2008
I snapped some digital photos during the boot sequence. I find that I
am told that at:
Port-04: Hard Disk, WBC WD5000AAKS 00A7B0
(Drive is controlled by the RAID BIOS)
As the screen scrolls, I find the following report:
4 WD5000AAKS-0 WD-WMASY0568494 465.8GB Non-RAID Disk
I find this mixed message very confusing.
When I open Computer Management (Local)>Storage>Disk Management, I
find that XP Pro opens the "Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard to help
me set up this disk as a dynamic disk. I gather that the "Drive is
controlled by the RAID BIOS" message is driving this behavior.
Ports 0 and 1 are a pair of 70 GB disks configured in a RAID 1 array.
These contain my OS, programs, and documents.
I do not want to mess this up. I do want to format the disk on Port 4
as a simple data storage disk (no RAID.)
Can anyone explain? I am stymied.

monitor problems
Has anyone experienced this fault on a CRT monitor - a 4 yr old LG
Studioworks.
Once or twice a session the display momentarily has a fit! The image dulls,
appears to zoom out of the screen and then contracts back to normal size and
brightness. This happens in a split second and there is also a 'crackle'.
It started happening once every several hours but the freqency is
increasing.
If this is a known but cheaply fixed fault fine. Otherwise I'm loathe to lay
out $X only to be told that it'll cost $Y to fix which might be a good part
of the cost of a new monitor.

invisible SATA hard drive
A recently fitted SATA HD isn't showing up.
I have 4 SATA slots on my Gigabyte Duo GA-8I915P Duo Pro motherboard. 2
have a matching pair of Hitachi SATA HDs in a RAID configuration.
A few months ago I fitted a Panasonic DVD RW into one of the remaining
slots. It showed up and worked faultlessly immediately.
Recently I bought a Western Digital 400GB SATA HD, fitted it into a spare
bay and hooked it up. But it's not there.
During POST (which in spite of every attempt to pause it, flashes along at
the speed of light) no trace of it seems to appear. I think the DVD RW is
there and the 2 RAID drives do appear but not the WD drive. There's no sign
of it in BIOS either even after using the auto detect option.
What do I need to do to get this new drive up and running? If this isn't
the right group does anyone know of another or maybe a forum?

Nvidia 9600GT Problem
I've posted my problem to a couple of support groups and so far I
haven't been able to solve my problem, at least not completely.
Recently, meaning a couple days ago I upgraded my PC's video card to a
Nvidia 9600GT series card from an ATI X1600. I am running a fully up to
date version of Windows XP Professional. I uninstalled the ATI drivers
and other related software before I switched cards. I then installed
the Nvidia Forceware software. I also reinstalled the Viewsonic driver
for my VP2330 flat panel display. Viewsonic recommends for best results
to run the monitor at a resolution of 1920 by 1200. I did just that
when using the ATI video card although it wouldn't work in DVI-D mode.
Now when I set the resolution to 1920 by 1200 the font rendering has
problems. Rather than having black text, the text displays in a
multitude of colors. This is also true for text displayed in white, or
any other color that I've tried for that matter. Activating cleartext
has helped somewhat making text more legible, but I haven't been able to
fix the text color problem. If I run the monitor at 1600 by 1200
everything works as it should. Has anyone come across this sort of
problem before? And can it be fixed? Or is this a compatibility issue?

How can I tell if my computer will work with this? The computer is a
Dell Dimension 4700C bought in December 2004, and currently has 1GB of
RAM. I would prefer not to take my computer apart to check this. Tag: DVD-RW drive Tag: 330859
Strange Keyboard Problem:
I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2
The problem I have is this: sometimes like on Yahoo or MSN when I
click on something and then click backspace it doesn't do it. I see it
cycling but then it just sits. I've noticed it does this on other
sites as well but not all. In most cases when I click the backspace
button or key it does so but in these other instances I have to click
it twice and sometime 3 times. I shouldn't have to do this. When I
click on the backspace key or button it should immediately backspace
without me having to repeat it. Does anyone know why its doing this or
can offer any suggestions?
Thanks,

Task Manager
Does anyone know how task manager monitors CPU
performance?
In the CPU usage area, what does a second "red" line
graph indicate? Whenever the red line ascends, the
green line of the same CPU descends correspondingly.
(The red line only appears on an E8400 chip - 45nm)

MS Installer Cleanup utility
I'm trying to uninstall some software (Palm Desktop), which gave an msi
error and failed to install. Palm's advice to me was to install the
Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and use this to erase leftover
registry entries from a previously deleted version of their software. I
obtained the CleanUp Utility from the MS site and tried to run it. My
problem is that this utility fails to install or run and gives an error
message:
Error: "ActiveX component cant create object: 'scripting.fileSystemObject"

display driver problem
Hi all,
I am using a hitachi LCD-Flat display, intel- PXA255 processor with WINCE 5.0 running on it. I am getting a side effect in the display i.e a very light projection of red color towards the right side of the icon till the end of screen. I had changed the RGB settings but no effect. If please any one can tell me any functions relating to this effect, or is this a total HARDWARE issue.

AutoRun May Not Work After First Insert a "usb flash drive like a CD ROM"
Hi
We want to develope a usb flash drive, just like a CD ROM,which contains
some software can autorun when being plugged. But we find a strange
phenomena:
After insert our usb flash drive into a computer with a fresh
installation of Windows 2000/Windows XP/Windows Vista for the first time,
the AutoRun functionality of our computer may not work. However, after
unplugging and plugging the device into the computer, the AutoRun
functionality may start to work again. After that this phenomena does not
occur again.
I hope someone can explain it, Thanks for answering.
Sincerely,

Bluetooth icon missing from control panel
I have a Dell Latitude D610 with a built in bluetooth adapter. When I
do a fresh OS install on other similar machines, I am able to see the
Bluetooth icon in the control panel. I believe this machine used to
have the Toshiba Bluetooth stack on it. However it has since been
removed. I can confirm that there are no unknown devices or devices
with error in the device manager. I tried running
C:\windows\system32\bthprops.cpl and nothing happens. I can also
confirm that c:\windows\inf\bth.inf exists and is the original (SP2)
version. There is also a string value in
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run called
"BluetoothAuthenticationAgent" that has the value "rundll32.exe
bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent".
Given all of the above, does anyone have any idea how to force the
bluetooth icon in the control panel to show up? Tag: DVD-RW drive Tag: 330824

Help with 6000 Wireless Keyboard
Hello,
I'm struggling with a problem I have seen online elsewhere, but no
solutions.... I have this wonderful keyboard and mouse, mouse works,
kbd doesn't. I have already tried:
Changing channel on receiver
Hitting the connect button on the keyboard
Replacing the batteries
Moving the reciever around.
I have downloaded the lastest driver. The strange thing is, the dialog
box in Intellipoint Pro shows full signal strength and battery power,
even when I unplug the batteries!!!
HELP!
Many thanks,

Configuration problem or defect drive?
I already tried to get help on this but wasn't successful - so this is my
second shot. My first attempt was a month ago and I did a lot of reading
since - equally unsuccessful.
The Problem: My Asus DRW2014L1T won't open it's door for me. It also doesn't
recognize any CD's I 'force' into it (emergency open). So far this sounds
like a hardware problem. There are some aspects though that make me doubt
that: during boot my other DVD drive is correctly displayed as PATA (Pioneer
DVR 112) but no mention of the Asus (no mention of the SATA HDD either by the
way - so maybe that's normal?). In 'My Computer' the drive is listed as
'CD-Rom' drive. In 'Device Manager' it is listed under the correct name and
as properly working. In 'Computer Management/Disk Management' it's the same
as in 'Device Manager' - the Pioneer is recognized as DVD, the Asus is listed
as CD-Rom drive. Under 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' I have 9 listings (is that
normal - I thought I only had 3 drives in total and although there was one
step during installation of my broadband modem installing a 'CD-Rom device'
that only makes 4???):
Intel ICH9 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 2 - 2926
Intel ICH9 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 1 - 2920

If I disconnect the Asus the boot process is a lot faster, with the Asus
attached boot goes through a couple of 'please hold or call back later'
phases, particularly when the drives are being 'detected' (or not).
Any clue what's going on? Is it just the drive itself (I hope not - the
dealer is 800 miles away and I won't get there again before July)?
System Info: Windows XP Pro 2, Intel DX38BT board, Intel Core2 2,66, NVidia
XT6800, plenty of free space on the harddrive, DDR3 1333 1GH RAM, no viruses.

The Creative Service for CDROM Access service failed to start due to the

If I right-click one the Event 7000 in the event viewer I get the above

How can I find out where it is looking for the file?
also I have a few events that produce the following:

attempt to contact a source will be made for 15 minutes. NtpClient has no

How to diagnose QueryDosDevice Failed error
I've started to get the "QueryDosDevice Failed. Insufficient system
resources exist to complete the requested service" pop-up rather
consistantly.
Is there a way to find out which requested service is causing the problem?
The last time i had this problem my Profile became corrupted. Windows
somehow fixed the Profile, and i stopped getting the error message.
This time however the Profile is acting strangly, some programs wont run,
for example iTunes complains about not being able to verify my Audio
drivers, and stops working.
Something else i've notice is that Task Manager is "dimmed" and unavailable
for use. Also when i type CTRL-Alt-Del only the Cancel button is available.
The HD i am using is fairly new, about 6 months. I migrated from a smaller
ATA drive to a Segate 250 SATA drive. I use the migration tool provided with
the new drive and it worked perfectly i didn't lose any data. I am
mentioning this because i don't know if this is related to my
"QueryDosDevice Failed" problem.
I setup a new account and profile, and noticed that as soon as i tried to
use iTunes i got the Audio errors, and the "QueryDosDevice Failed" pop-up
started.
So, is there a way for me to diagnose and fix this problem?
Thanks all

When i put a blank cd in the drive the computer crashes every time but its
ok with audio and data disks.
Could be a compatibility issue. Try a different brand.

Tried +'s and -'s? If so, try Googling, esp. for pertinent MS problems
