    - SATA Western Digital Caviar HD install and set up problems I'm having mega headaches trying to install a SATA HD and get it running. My motherboard is a Gigabyte 915P MB -GA-8195P Duo (Pro), new about 2 ½ years ago - which initially had 2 Hitachi 160 GB SATA HDs set up in a Raid O array. These occupy two of the four SATA slots on the MB. It also had an IDE DVD RW originally and I later added a SATA Pioneer DVD RW in one of the spare slots. This was recognised by windows and worked immediately. I've now acquired a Western Digital 400GB SATA drive to occupy the last remaining SATA slot. WD's web site indicated that a jumper was required to cause this second generation SATA drive to revert to a 150MB?s transfer rate which is the speed quoted in the Gigabyte MB user guide. It reads: "S_ATA0/S_ATA1/S_ATA2/S_ATA3 (Serial ATA Connector) Serial ATA can provide 150MB'stransfer rate. Please refer to the BIOS settings for the Serial ATA and install the proper driver in order to work properly" (My italics - I don't understand the reference to installing a driver). The problem. The WD HD shows up during POST and in CMOS but Windows will not boot. Instead the following message appears: "Boot from CD Boot from CD Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter." I've been into BIOS to try and fix things. In Bios, the standard CMOS features show the following: "IDE Channel 0 Master HL-DTST DVD RAM GSH (The IDE DVD RW?) IDE Channel 0 Slave None IDE Channel 2 Master S_ATA1_ Raid drive IDE Channel 2 Slave S_ATA2_ (the Western's id) IDE Channel 3 Master S_ATA3_ Raid drive IDE Channel 3 Slave S_ATA4_ (the Pioneer's id)" In the Advanced BIOS features the boot priority is: "Hard drive CD Rom Floppy." On entering the Hard Drive Boot Priority, I found at first that the WD HD appeared before Intel Raid - Volume 0 (assumed to be the Hitachi RAID drives. I changed the order and rebooted, hoping that I had solved the problem. But the same "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter." Message appears. What have I missed? The MB user guide reference to "Please refer to the BIOS settings for the Serial ATA and install the proper driver in order to work properly" confuses me. What drivers?     - Windows XP Automatic Updates & 0x800703e7 I have never been more aggravated and frustrated in my entire life! Microsoft Support is about like trying to communicate with one on one. I mean as to HIM actually talking back. You call for tech support & you get some one in India or the Phillipines and you can not understand them because of their accents. I have spent over 12 hours on the phone for the past two days, trying to find out why I can not get my automatic updates to turn on in my Security Center. I have had one technician in my computer trying to resolve this issue for 3 hours and he could not resolve this, but NOT once did he go and try to do an UPDATe and get this Ox800703E7 error. It is very frustrating to be on the phone with some one 3 hours and have them in your computer & all of a sudden get disconnected from you & your computer & they know your phone number and don't bother to call you back, after you have stays up until 530 in the morning. Then they are going to have a SENIOR technician from Microsoft call at a certain time. They did not call me when they said, and waited and called on Sunday when I was at church! Then said that they will call back tonight between 7 and 9. Well I hope that who ever calls me tonight does not have any thing but an American English accent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This problem should be an easy fix for a Microsoft specialist, that is if they exist. I've been transferred and sent all around the world and back and still no help. I'd like to get out my shot gun and give this computer to the junk pile! Windows XP Professional is what I have and a Microsoft Engineer put it on my computer. But he wants to charge me to bring my computer in rather than work with me over the phone! Why can't things ever be simple??? I would think this would be. I did not have this problem until I installed AVG 7.5 on my computer and upgraded to 8.0, and all hell broke loose. I uninstalled the 8.0 and installed McAfee and it seems that is when the problem occurred. I've read that a third party program could cause this problem. SOME BODY WITH A BRAIN PLEASE HELP ME!     - Removing the old CPU fan and heatsink and installing the new one. I want to know how to remove the old fan and heatsink from my motherboard. It turns out the CPU is probably good. Now I installed the fan and heatsink on the PC I built 3 years ago by using a screwdriver and pressing down with a bit of pressure to engage the hook mechanicism. Now there is different release points on different mobos. I can see on the Compaq presario 5000 A stock PC mobo there is a lever that I think you push down on to release the CPU fan and heatsink? On the motherboard I'm trying to fix is a model M7VIG 400 mobo that supports AMD processors. I just want to remove the CPU and put it into another M7VIG 400 mobo. There is an AMD processor in it. I bought it 3 years ago from, not Fries, but the other main PC store that has alot of outlets. Anyways, oh yeah, CompUSA and it was a bundle package. There AMD bundle.     - secondary ide connector issue I have a very puzzling situation. Dell Dimension 4400 Running Windows XP When a CD-Rom drive is connected to the Secondary IDE (either master or cable-select), Windows XP Home Edition will not boot. When it gets to the Widnows XP logo screen, the computer just hangs for hours and hours. The computer will not boot into safe mode either. When I disconnect the CD-Rom drive, everything works fine. I tried connecting several other CD-Rom drives that I know work and I get the same result. I can boot from disk with the drive so I know it's connected, but Windows will not load. I tried a different IDE cable, same result. I tried connecting a Zip Disk 250 and that works just fine. The problem is narrowed down to just the CD-Rom drives. I tried updating the ide controller and that didn't fix it. I also made sure I was using the most current Bios on my PC. ANY SUGGESTIONS? This situation seems odd to me. My OS fails, and I remove existing HD into another PC as a slave drive, D drive [C drive as a primary drive] can be recognited, but E drive [D Drive as a primary drive] cannot be recognited, and request for format.     - SD Card Reader problem I have XP MCE 2005 with SP3, on a DELL Inspiron 6000, with a built in SD Card Reader. On 4/28 I totally reloaded the system with the OEM XP SP2 CD. Applied the downloaded SP3, not WU, then applied IE7,WMP11 and other updates and my software applications and restored data. Hey the PC works great. I have a 4 gig SD chip in the drive that just kinda stays there and I have a batch file I run routinely to backup strategic files. Works great. And to tell you the truth, I don't know when this started as I usually don't take the card out of the machine. When I boot, with or without the card in, it works. Either its there when I boot as a hard drive, or when I insert it, I get the ding dong and the drive appears. All's well so far. If I remove it I again get the ding dong and it disappears. Now the problem. If I re-insert it again or another card, I don't get the ding dong, but a dong dong. And I say it that way as the normal sound is two different tones but the 2nd insert it is the lower pitched sound two (maybe 3) times. And if I look in device manager the SD Memory Card has the yellow ! beside it and the error is: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38) Found the code 38 on MS but it just says run the troubleshooter.. Thanks MS. That's no help. I've uninstalled the sd memory card and then let XP search for hardware, and it finds it, installs it and has me reboot. After the reboot it finishes and asks for one more reboot. But all this solves nothing. I've even tried going into properties and setting the drive to quick disconnect (or whatever that wording is in the properties). I read that it just bypasses the write cache but it should make removing the card easier if not safer. I swear this used to work under SP2, I have a 2 gig chip in my camera and I normally flip these around of course to read the camera chip. Not often but I do every 2 weeks or so when I do a photo shoot. I just thought I'd ask before trying the link for the free SP3 support tomorrow. I've googled and searched MS but don't find a thing. I just installed Windows NT on a NEC Ready 9701SE PC, fresh from the disk, however, there is no sound. I tried to add the driver in Multimeda in the control panel.     - WinXP pro SP3 destroys USB connectivity I've installed SP3 on my Lenovo M55e desktop (WiXP Pro) and experience an elusive problem, a blue screen reporting a hardware problem, sending me to my hardware provider, and described an a memory parity error. Well, the first diagnosis stage was a replacement of the memory cards. The system operated flawlessly until I tried to connect my USB external enclosure equipped with a HD. So, I put the enclosure apart and installed the HD as a second internal HD. All worked, until I tried to connect my USB external DVD drive. Once again, the same hardware related error message. Well, since USB connectivity is constantly disrupted. I reminded myself that all these problems started after the installation of the final version of WinXP Pro SP3. This version was installed by me following a prior installation of a set of SP3 betas. I would have been eager to uninstall SP3, so as to confirm my suspicion, but since SP3 has been installed on my system as a beta for a long time, uninstallation would have wide implications on my system. Is there a way to revive my USB connectivity without uninstalling SP3? Instalation of updated USB drivers, for example? If not, could you suggest a solution?     - lcd vs laptop Hi, recently I had to replace the LCD monitor which is connected to my laptop (Sony VAIO) via a dockingstation. Although cable is connected (confirmed by the monitor status), the VAIO fails to switch over to LCD with Fn+F7.     - Connecting New Canon Camcorder ZR800 I just got this new camera as a replacement for my older ZR70 that was stolen a few months ago. I never had any trouble with the old one so I figured a newer one would work just as well or better. Well, I go to use it today for the first time and I cannot get windows to recognize the camcorder. It sees the firewire card but not the camera. The camera recognizes that its connected to the card by its screen saying "DV-IN" and thats it. I'm not sure what else to try at this point.     - Great multipurpose laptop I am really grateful to Gateway for having come out with the Solo 5300 laptop. This near-8-year-old machine has not only served some of my secondary computing needs but also served as a room heater over the last winter period. With the lid closed and the unit inverted, it also handily served very well as a leftover pizza warmer. And I can honestly say That I never had a warmer entity ever sit on my lap. Besides all those heartwarming capabilities, it also runs (plods along actually) Windows XP Pro SP3 without any complaint. Bless its little heart - a P3 1GHz CPU.     - Can Windows Lose a PATA HDD or is it knackered? Dear All, The other day I did a reset on my pc, it took forever to reset, then I'd lost a drive...... Fearing the worst, I went on the hunt for HDD recovery programs.. The Drive is (when plugged in) showing in device manager, but not Disk managment. When plugged in machine takes forever to start up, the blue bar scrolls and scrolls (which gives me slight doubts the OS is corrupt), using any 3rd party apps won't detect the drive, but Seatools Win32 see's it, but causes problems when 'detecting drives', so I thought, ok, DOS Based ISO Disk to book, which I did, and it see's it, and did an advanced test didn't come up with any errors? When the machine has booted up (after ages) when I'm doing stuff, windows appears to be looking at the (or a) drive, HDD light on for ages, and applications slow or even freeze for a few mins.... I'm wondering if something has mucked my pc up, some how? I did have an issue with my Email Client, which I needed to re-install IE6 to IE7 to get it fixed, I've scanned my pc for spyware, etc, but I'm thinking maybe (or hopefully) there is something I can fix or change whilst the HDD is not connected, so when I reset it re-detects it, and fixes the issues....... I Don't want to have to resort to a re-install if the drive is knackered.... Hope someone can point me in the right direction before I relegate the HDD to the bin and lose all the stuff on it.     - 4GB RAM with XP: What should the Virtual memory setting be? Hi, I have read for years that Virtual Memory should manually be set to 2 times the amount of RAM and not let Windows manage it.     - HID-Compliant Device Troubles. Ok, I have recently build a computer, isntalled Windows XP Pro on it, SP3, all the updates, works great. Only problem is that my Logitech G15 keyboard is having trouble. When I install it everything goes great, installed all the drivers and software off the CD, the found new hardware wizard starts going, installing stuff. Then I get to the HID-Compliant Device. It brings up the wizard and offers the options (auto or choose yourself), I let it search itself, and it can't find anything. This results in a keyboard whose media keys work, the LCD screen and apps work but it won't type. The only time it types in on boot (to get into the BIOS and whatnot). Whats up?     - MS Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000 Problem ???? I have the MS 4000 mouse and all of a sudden it started acting irradicately and doing it's own thing. So I followed MS's info on deinstalling and reinstalling the software. Didn't work ! It seems to scroll both vertically & horizontaly when moving the mouse. Hard to keep track of where I'm at on a page. Orginally it just scrolled vertically. When highlighting a sentence to copy, it won't let me go directly to a right click/copy, it makes me click the mouse before I can go to the right click???     - cannot uninstall USB entries in device manager Having lots of problems with USB ports. They refuse to work. Want to try to uninstall them in safe mode, then re-boot to see if XP (pro, SP2) will install them correctly. This was suggested in a posting about a year ago by MowGreen. When I go to "My Computer" and right click manage, then select device manager, I can expand the icon by USB ports. I thought the way to uninstall everything was to (one by one) right click each entry, then select "uninstall". That is what I tried. The computer just hangs when I do that. In safe mode, in safe mode with networking, in normal mode also. When that happens it takes forever to get out of computer management, also takes way too long to re-boot. What is to be done?     - realtek drivers for sound card and recording my new pc is less than a year old, my old pc is going on 5-6 years old, but the old one allows me to record what I hear, so I can play whatever using WMP and record it using different software. the old pc has a creative sound blaster. Does anybody know of some good drivers for my new onboard realtek sound card that allows the same function as the old pc?     - USB mouse, flash drive fail to install Running XP SP2 on HP dx2000 MT desktop. When I try to use a cordless mouse, or a flash drive (both of which work fine on other computers), I get the "found new hardware balloon" and then the wizard starts. I let it find the software automatically. I think it finds the right software (whatever it is) but it never gets beyond the next window, which sez "there is a problem installing the hardware...the data is invalid. Click finish to exit the wizard." What is to be done? I have tried: disabling USB universal host controllers disabling USB root hubs, then rebooting installing new device drivers (said nothing was newer than what I had) downloading updates for Intel chipset drivers and installing same editing the registry key that tells where XP looks for drivers (%root%inf, etc.) and a few other things, all to no avail.     - Xp sp3 and SoundMax Control panel Just built new system had a few problems with as normal with any build waited for sp3 to be released before i did any major updates had a few problems with getting the system to recognise "soundmax" (ref kb888111) got system to recognise sound max and had no issues. Now after SP3 im back to the same issue it can not recognise the soundmax cp I do have full sound if somewhat limited normal windows controls. Any suggestions ?     - OT: SL9AN or eCoreDuo ..seeing as there are still a few Pentium D 965's around, for a fraction of what they cost, for a long time, and seeing as my motherboard supports this cpu ; would it be best to buy a cheaper CoreDuo, or a D965 (3.73ghz with HT'ing).     - PC Taking Too Long to Boot. Why? Hello, My XP PC is taking too long to boot. I suspect I have a problem with USB stuff, but I do not have to solve the problem.     - code 39 on installing sb sound card to pci slot receiving code 39 " cannot load the device driver for this hardward driver may be corrupted or missing etc" I tried to install an sb audigy sound card the device is seen in device manager but with exclamation mark....and error 39. When i loaded the drivers windows told me they were not digitally signed I said install anyway...but dxdiag and the properties pages in device manager tell me they are digitally signed...another strange bit of info is that system restore has lost all its points up till the installation of this card....when I try update driver etc..windows tells me the existing driver is ok and up to date...any help gratefully received. .p.s I installeda card that I know works on another pc but got the same response.....the card is there and works the drivers are there and are ok eeeeerm ??????????????     - new disk and now ? Hello all together, i have a big problem. Perhaps everybody can help me. On my old disk 60GB i have 5 partitions: 1. partition Windows 2000 prof. 2. partition Windows XP prof <=== production, here is the problem! 3. partition Windows 2000 srv 4. partiion fpr programms 5. partition ... Now, i have change the old disk to a bigger (160GB) disk. I have copied all Data. Partition 1 started very well and i can login and work with them. Partition 3 started very well and i can login and work with them. Parttion 2 (XP) is still standing with a screen of Windows XP. But not a login screen is not comming up. After a long time i found that the file \system32\config\system have everything to do with my problem. The new disk is the reason for my problem. That's fact.     - Disk boot failure Hello I have a problem since this morning, because yesterday my computer was working just fine. After I push the power button the first screen(the screen where my IDE and SATA devices are listed) took about 1-2 minutes to appear. I could see the memory specifications (like the header of the screen), but it took 1-2 minutes to display my HDD and my DVD-ROM. And then, when it was supposed to start loading Windows, I got the message: "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter". I thought it was my hard disk and I had one brand new, unformatted, available, so I replaced the HDD with this new one. The error was still the same, of course, because it had nothing on it, like I said. I inserted a Win XP cd and I managed to install it on my new HDD. At every restart I had to wait 1-2 minutes to see the first screen. After installing was complete I restarted the computer (the CD no longer in, so it had to boot from HDD) and...the same "disk boot failure" error. I have 2 IDE ports on my motherboard, so I tried both of them, I tried with another IDE cable, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas, please ? I don't have another motherboard to test if that is the problem. I hope you can help me.     - XP stuck on the Welcome screen Last month I had a serious problem with XP which I want to share with you all Due to a virus attach everytime when I log on to windows it shows me a msg box displaying *"Virusscan.vb is not found"* , I just press OK button & it went fine. As I am using Bitdefender AV I searched the reports & found a reg entry gets modified by the virus, I deleted the entry but backed up the registry in d drive prior to making changes. The next time when I logged on to windows it get stuck up in the welcome screen displaying *\"LOADING YOUR SETTINGS & THEN SAVING YOUR SETTINGS\"*, finally I have to reinstall XP on my SATA hdd, does anyone have a solution & how can I replace my registry with the backed up registry.     - Repairing Windows HI, My computer will not boot in any mode it gets as far as a file named mup.sys and then reboots. I have a copy of windows xp home which is what is installed on my notebook it just isint the same version.     - BSOD after installing new WD3200AAKS drives -why ? Hi, I just replaced my hard drives with 2 new Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb drives from Newegg. They are installed as a RAID 0 mirror pair using the mobo's nVidia Chipset RAID controller. During XP install I hit f6, stuff my floppy with the raid drivers in etc and the install works fine. Then when I come to boot XP I get a blue screen of death with a STOP 0x0000007B error (about removing any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers etc). Whats the most likely cause ? Is it a h/w incompatibility issue ? Driver issue ? A bad drive ? I've a ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe mobo.     - microphone not working I have recently purchased a web-cam with in-built microphone. My daughter also purchased the exact same one. On her computer the mic is working fine, although on my computer the mic does not work at all. i also purchased a stand alone mic and tried this one, this also does not work.     - Second Video Card Not Detected My first video card is a GeForce 7600 GT with two DVI hookups. I have two dell monitors plugged into it and it works great--I've got myself a super-wide desktop. I recently bought two new dell monitors with another GeForce 7600 GT; however, this second card is different than the first one--it has 512MB memory instead of 256MB memory (which is what my first card has) and instead of having two DVI hookups it has one DVI and one VGA hookup.
