 - "The data is invalid" (An error occurred during installation...) Hello George, I have basically the same problem. I am one of the many users having a problem that says "THE DATA IS INVALID" after installing or reinstalling driver for a device. This refers to add-on cards such as video card, sound card, capture card, usb card, etc. Specifically mine is video capture card (hauppage wintv-hvr 1250). This is what I have done so far: 1) Downloaded the latest driver from the vendor and reinstalled unsuccessfully. They even have the solution for the exact problem I have which is changing permission in the registry - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE.......ENUM\PCI. This is useful to some but not to me and to others. 2) I have tried a different motherboard with same hard drive (luckily, it booted fine) and showed same problem. Driver won't finish installing. 3) I tried another video capture card of a different brand and showed the same problem. Also tried on different PCI slot with no luck. 4) Updated chipsets and BIOS, and retried again what I have done, unsuccessfully. 5) I tried resetting the permissions to default state in the entire registry and tried reintalling driver again without success. 6) Finally, I tried the resolution in the 2 articles http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810882 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841567 you mentioned, and problem still persists.  - Hot hard drive Running Win XP pro SP2 I installed a Maxtor SATA 500 GB hard drive in my 7 year old computer, using an IDE/SATA controller. Its running fine. However, it runs quite a bit warmer (hotter) than my 80 GB IDE hard drive. I cannot touch it for more than 5 seconds, without letting go. Is this high temp normal for a big hard drive?  - capacity limiation of using external RAID5? If so, any solution? Dear All, I just bough a new CFI Sil3726 Port-Multiplier Box (that is, an external hard disk tower), which comes with a Sil3132R5 PCI-Express lX HBA card (that is, a controller), and I put five WD 640Gbit hard disks into it. I wanted to combine all five disks, total 3200Gbit to run Raid 5. However, when I went to Disk Management under Computer Management, my computer didn't recognize any new hard disk connected, so I couldn't initialize and format. Then if I only combined three hard disks together, (that is, 1920Gbit only), the Disk Management could recognize it and asked me to initialize. In fact, this unit is my second one. My first one is identical with the same box and card, except that the disk capacity is only 500Gbit, so with 5 disks together, the total is 2500Gbit, and it has been running perfectly with my computer for many months already. So, I wonder if Windows XP or any components of this configuration has any limitation for the capacity of using external Raid. Maybe, I am thinking something I didn't set correctly in BIOS? My computer is: motherboard: P5K-E series, Interl P35Chipset Support CPU: Core2Duo CPU E6550@2.33Ghz RAM: 2.34Ghz, 3.00 GB OS: Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3 Controller: Cilicon Image ATA Controller, SST 39VF010 Chip, BIOS info 7.3.13 Can anyone help?  - stop error 0x7F I recently installed a dual booting system with ubuntu and xp sp2.... but after I installed Rising Antivirus xp give me a stop 0x7F (0x0D) error... I don't know why....safe mode works for me and i installed the latest video card driver...  - DVD / DVD+R /DVD-R / DVDRW. Are they all really distinct media formats? I'm always confused by DVD terminology when buying media to write on. There's DVD / DVD+R / DVD-R / DVDRW and I'm not even sure which more! Are these all really distinct technologies and formats? Or are some subsets / supersets of others? Or maybe its only backward compatibility issues? What's the best way to figure out what format my Laptop supports? Do they have varied sizes? Does it matter whether I'm writing data or movies etc.? I faintly remember there being lead-in / lead-out issues.... I've never faced the problem that I bought some commercial movie etc. on a DVD and my Dell Laptop ( Inspirion E1505)'s inbuilt DVD reader /writer couldn't read it. Its a dual boot so are there any Linux-vs-Win issues too? Are these distinctions only relevant when writing disks at home as opposed to commercially stamped disks?  - "Windows could not load the installer for volume" connecting USB D When I connect a USB drive I get "Windows could not load the installer for volume" and the installation fails. I have one drive installed fine, this is a second. I tried a few things I found online and it didn't help so I sent the drive back and ordered a different kind (Vox 250GB USB 2.0 and Sata).  - Quiting mskey keyboard tool? I am having a problem with my Microsoft Wireless Laser Keyboard 6000 v2.0, when I click on any key it does not show up on my computer, Microsoft's solution is to quit the mskey keyboard tool but they don't explain how to do that.  - Can data be completely wiped off a hard drive using an external device such as a strong magnet or a degaussing coil? Hello all, I'm new to this group but old to computers - 30 years of experience in hardware repair. I've been on the Internet since '93 and Usenet since '95 or so, but just never came across this group. After lurking here for about a week, I like what I see and think I'll stay awhile. Hope you don't mind... I do have a question and would like your opinion(s). In Dec. of '07, I purchased a WD 'My Book Essential' 500GB external USB drive. It worked fine until last month and then abruptly died - I heard the bong you hear when a USB device is unplugged and the drive simply disappeared from 'My Computer', never to be heard from again. I opened up the WD case without destroying it, a monumental task in itself, and removed the drive (a standard WD SATA 500GB) thinking that it might be a bad power supply or USB interface causing the problem. I hooked the drive up directly to an SATA port on a different machine and when powered on, it immediately started making the 'click of death'. In addition, to verify that the WD case/PSU/USB I/F was good, I installed a different drive (Seagate 320GB) into the WD case and it's been working fine for the past month. Anyway, at this point I knew the WD drive was toast but that it was (is) still protected under the 3-year WD warranty. The problem: I used the drive mainly for temporary storage of data from my customer's computers - customers who include attorneys, doctors, insurance agencies and regular people. I can't return the drive to WD for repair knowing that all of that personal data still exists on the drive - I take pride in protecting my customer's data and have never had a mishap in 16 years of servicing PC's. However, I would still like to have this drive replaced. To do that, I have to be 100% sure that the data on the platters has been completely wiped clean before shipping it to WD, and since the drive won't initialize, I can't use software to accomplish that. I'm thinking that a strong magnetic field, such as that from an old degaussing coil or a strong (rare earth) external magnet might do the trick. I've even thought of experimenting with some old, still functioning drives to observe the effects of exposing them to external sources of magnetism. Although, before doing that, I came across this group and thought it would be a good idea to ask around here.  - Blue Screen 0x0000007A I own a laptop now for just under three years, just recently I got a spate of BSOD errors, referring to atapi.sys. Following this error, I got an HDD error saying the device was not found. I went on to do a System Restore, and for awhile the BSOD errors stopped! But now they're back... I was hoping that by doing a System Restore, this would have replaced the atapi.sys driver, thus solving the problems if the driver was corrupt...now I'm not sure if the hard drive or RAM could be going, seeing as the BSOD errors have started again.  - chkdsk log had bsod yesterday and their was a error reported in event viewer for 1003. i posted mindump at site and they said to do a defrag and chksck frag went find but when doing the chkdsk i had message come up that their where the disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters detected in file 129592 of name and it said this for about 15 minutes all other tests where fine. i went into event viewer but could find nothing for winlogon. wanted to know how bad the drive is. any idea why there is no log and is there another way to check without it taking 3 hours.  - dynamic disk is not accessible after replacing a motherboard hi, a few days ago my comp started to spontaneously restart. the technician replaced the motherboard and the power supply, and had to reinstall windows because of the new board. i have two hard drives in the box, both hitachi IDE 80GB, one as the system disk (C: drive) and one for data files (D: drive). according to what he said, he disconnected the D: drive before doing anything. the D: drive was dynamic. now, after connecting it, i cannot access it. it is not showing in My Computer, and in Disk Management i see it as Unknown and Not Initialized. he tried to run Initialize Disk on it, but it didn't help. i believe he also checked the disk in the "disks to convert" step in the Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard, i hope he didn't destroy it with that. when i try to run Initialize Disk from it's context menu, the hourglass shows for a second and nothing happens. so now the disk is in Unknown, Not Initialized state, and i cannot access it. interestingly, SpeedFan reports all the S.M.A.R.T parameters of the disk are ok. is there a way to gain access again to the disk? tsahi Tag: CD/DVD Drive not responding Tag: 333701

 - Hard disk crash please help Hi: Something sent a power surge through our house today and the main circuit breaker flipped, cutting off power to my computer. Catastrophe. The drive won't boot. Windows just doesn't see it. Even the "dir" command DOS (which I accessed through the repair recovery console) gives me an error that says the "directory cannot be enumerated." Running the Windows XP CD, I'm told that there's no system there and the drive needs to be reformatted to install it anew. I know the data is still there. I downloaded a program called "getdataback" and as far as I can tell, I did not lose a single user file. The preview function works and every file I looked at seems to be fine. All I have to do is send in $79 and the program will copy the data over, hopefully in usable form. But it's a holiday weekend, and if I cannot ressurect the system itself, I will lose days reconfiguring a new system. I cannot afford this. The preview system won't read the "identity" files from Outlook Express, so I cannot access critical emails. I'm in pretty deep trouble. Please please ... is there anyway to revive this drive?  - left handed mouse keeps switching back to right handed Hi All, I have lots of left handed customers running their mice as left handers. They have no problem with it. One particular customer with XP-Pro-SP2 can not seem to keep it in left handed operation. He is using the stock mouse drivers. I switch it over to left handed operation. Two weeks later, he is complaining it is back to right handed operation. (He is not smart enough to do it himself.) Is there something I can put in start up that will automatically program it back?  - Replacing hard drive Hello, I need to replace an ageing 180 gig (boot) drive, and I found a great deal on a 160 gig drive. If I only using 100 gigs of the 180, can I just transfer the what's on 180 to the 160 without any problems? I'm assuming that I will use whatever software comes with the drive to do the transfer.  - Energy Star Enabled OK? I'm about to buy a Dell notebook computer with the downgrade to Windows XP Pro. One option (you can take it or leave it) is Energy Star Enabled. According to Dell, it uses "Energy Star power management features, which allow the computer to enter a very low power mode when not in use for a specified period of time." Can this option cause any problems with the computer? Given that Dell isn't making it standard, I worry about such things as the screen saver keeping the screen blank even when you want it back.  - zx-6000 & vx-1000 freezing system Hello, I have both the headset and the webcam, they work fine separatly. I connect them both, then go into MSN to set my audio video preferences I can select and test the sound settings for input & output for the ZX-6000 When I select the VX-1000 for the camera the system freezes... till I unplug the webcam. Also when I have both the headset and the webcam connected the webcam outputs a totally black image. I use lifecam 1.4 and lifechat 1.0, system windows XP with latests updates.  - problem with xp and large drive i have a strange problem with xp and my additional drive i recently bought. i was running vista for a while and just couldn't deal with it anymore so decided to go back to xp. i have the original 250gb drive and added a 1tb drive. when i installed xp it saw the 1tb drive as D and worked fine. i started to install my drivers, first with the latest nvidia drivers for my video. it installed fine, but after the reboot i nearly freaked out when D was gone. it didn't see the drive at all. subsequent reboots did not show the drive in device manager at all. i started over again with fresh xp install and after it finished D was there again. i installed sp3 and after the reboot, D was again gone. i installed xp a third time and D was there. this time i did nothing except a reboot and again D was gone. one thing that's interesting, every time the system would boot after the initial install finished and D wouldn't appear, the boot process took excessively long (nearly 5 min). i can't make sense of it. if it was a matter of xp never seeing the drive, i can see the possibility of a driver isse, 48 bit lba support etc. but when the drive can't be seen after the second boot following initial install, that doesn't make too much sense to me (bios always sees the drive). i ended up going back to vista (for now) and no issues accessing the 1tb drive. system is hp pavilion a1630n purchased end of 2006. any ideas why this could be happening?  - PC start by itself I know there are a lot of Google postings regarding PC's starting and shutting down on their own, but I have not been able to find one that has a conclusive result. Here is my "hair pulling" dilemma. 1- WinXP pro sp3 (or at least was sp3 when the problem started). 2- Dell E510, about 2 years old. Dell BIOS, Dell MOBO. Dell PSU (305 W continuous) 3- Worked fine until about a week ago. Then as I was doing some accounting on line, started closing open programs one at a time & shut the unit down. Without any warning or error message of any kind. Just as if I initiated the shutdown. 4- I restarted the unit, it worked for about 10-15 minutes, then started the shutdown sequence. 5- I started most obvious troubleshooting sequence: a) May be overheating. Opened the side, used a bigger/better fan & constantly checked heat sink temperature with an external thermometer & my finger tips. Didn't think it was running hot, thermometer showed around 110-115 F (so CPU could be no more than 125 to 130, and still OK). b) Removed every item that I did not need. Sound card, ATI Radeon, all USB devices except mouse & KB. Enabled onboard video. The same thing. c) Disconnected from LAN & Internet, and then uninstalled virus scanner & firewall. No change. d) Removed primary SATA drive, using XP CD made a partition on secondary and installed a fresh copy of XP pro. The same thing. Start & shutdown randomly. e) Changed CMOS battery. Reset the BIOS to factory and adjusted there after. Checked all the screen saver, start on power restore, power on lan activity, etc, etc. f) Reseated all connections. No change. g) Removed front power ribbon cable to eliminate possibility of bad switch. Same thing. h) Removed CD/DVD & burner & disconnected floppy. Same thing. Like this AM around 5 AM, when the PC has been off for at least 5 hours & cold turned on by itself, and started making noise shutting down & starting up. I had to yank the power cable off and go to work. 6- I am at my wits. The only thing left is start spending hard earned cash & first buy a PSU. If that does not fix it, then I guess next is MOBO, and then possibly CPU. But my concern is that XP CD may not work because it is from an OEM company with Dell MOBO or at least I may have licensing issues. Sorry looks too long, but I am dying!  - xp won't recognise third SATA drive Have been using XP Pro with an AsRock ConroeXFire-eSata2 mobo and two sata HDDs and it' s been nice and stable. Now trying to add a third SATA drive but although the BIOS sees the third drive it doesn't show in XP (neither an icon in my computer nor in Disk Management.) I formatted this third drive by disconnecting the second one temporarily so windows would recognise it and then format and make active in Disk Management. But reconnecting back all 3 disks I can only see two again, except in the BIOS. Bios is AMI P1.40 09/06/2006.  - 2 or 4GB memory? I'm about to buy a notebook computer with the Vista downgrade to Windows XP Pro. A friend whose judgment I normally trust says I'll never need more than the 2.0GB memory that comes with the computer. I can upgrade to 4.0GB, however, for an extra $150. I do a lot of net surfing, emailing, and word-processing now. I will probably want to watch DVDs on the computer. And I want to be able to use this computer for a long time, including adding software periodically. (I have 512MB memory on my 5-year-old Dell desktop computer. I think it was the maximum I could get at the time. That computer is still chugging along, but it may be nearing the end of its lifespan.) I don't mind splurging if it'll keep the computer up-to-date for a longer time. So...should I follow my friend's recommendation, or should I go for the maximum amount of memory? Thank you! Games site review states that "Fortunately, any USB guitar controller made for the consoles will also work with the PC game." Googling it seems that there are both wired and wireless versions. Suddenly I've started getting the "HI-SPEED USB Device Attached To non-HI-SPEED Hub" error again after about a half-year or so of absence. Nothing on my system has changed with the possible exception of the recent WinXP updates. What to do?  - Microsoft Natural Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard 7000 Hi - I purchased the above a while back (3 months or so) and it's been working great but now it appears to have an issue on boot up. It has the 2.4Ghz receiver that plugs into a USB port. I have Vista and XP as a dual boot and ofter need to run XP. To do this I need to scroll down in the boot screen and select it. Up to now this hasn't been a problem. The problem I am seeing is (as of yesterday evening) is that when I boot for some reason when it hits the boot selection screen (standard Microsoft Vista/XP one) the keyboard doesn't operate. I try pressing up/down, function keys and nothigs registers. Before if I hit DEL and go into the BIOS all is well and I can navigate around using the cursor keys and once I get into Vista the keyboard appears to work correctly. It's only on the boot selection screen when I want to select XP that it appears to stop working (perhaps it's a ploy to stop me using XP)! I'm going to get some new batteries for the mouse and keyboard but I don't see how that is going to solve this particular problem (the battery meter for both mouse and k/b are fully green). I've tried re-syncing the k/b (and mouse) all to no avail. I've even sat the keyboard in front of the receiver, again no joy. I've tried out USB ports for the receiver. There are other wireless devices around (router, other MS keyboards). Perhaps I'll try and see if they will let me navigate (or take their batteries out to take them out of the equation). Interested to know if anyone else has had a similar problem or ideas on how to fix it (as I'm fast running out)? At present I've another wireless k/b that I also have connected which I use to make the selection. Once made and in XP/Vista the problem k/b works perfectly!!!  - Usb port stopped working A friend just reported that the USB port stopped working after she had transferred some files from a memory stick. She used the 'safely remove hardware' routine on Xp. Its a relatively new machine, still under warranty. Her husband had brought files from his machine to her for transfer which was done but afterwards the port would not respond. I suggested she uninstall the usb listings in the device manager, reboot and let Windows reinstall those drivers. She reported there were no Orange/Yellow ! marks beside the devices and the various Services were not disabled.  - Mouse driver is blocking standby Logitech MX518 mouse WinXP Pro SP3 I uninstalled Logitech SetPoint 4.24 and installed SetPoint 4.60. Since then, I get an error whenever I try entering Standby mode. The error says that the Logitech mouse is preventing the system from entering Standby. When I look at the mouse in Device Manager, the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option is greyed out. I uninstalled and reinstalled SetPoint but the problem remains. I have not tried reverting to SetPoint 4.24, since the whole reason I updated was to try fixing a whole separate issue I'm having. Other ideas are welcome.  - lost data from USB drive while copying files Hi, I was trying to COPY files from a windows XP PC to my (windows XP) notebook using a USB (thumb) drive and that XP PC overwrote my FAT index on my USB drive.  - BIOS Setup Ok, I have everything installed and I'm about to fire up the system. I'm going to have to go into BIOS and choose SATA, right? The operating system is Windows XP Pro, bought from a PC vendor 2 years ago. Ok, I'm on a section from BIOS setup. It's talking about advanced features on BIOS. It says something about BIOS upgrade. To upgrade the BIOS, use either the GIGABYTE Q-Flash or @BIOS ultility. Is this necessary to do? Do I need to upgrade the BIOS? Can't I just go into BIOS during setup and choose SATA drive? Have you visited the manufacturer website, to download a
new driver? Other then that I can't be of much help as my
last owned copy of MS was the 98'er version. Can you also
check if the CD works? Like putting in a recovery-CD and let
the sucker boot from CD? Then you will know for certain that
the drive is not failing. You know those things can just
bite the dust...

When you open MyComputer do you see the cd drive icon? If not, try
Doug Knox's fix.
